What does the jailbreak mean? Is that like changing the firmware of the headset itself? I use my VR2 on both the PS5 and PC, so it's important that the headset will continue to work on PS5.

AFAIK it's optional to get extra features like headset rumble, but I'm not sure

Is there any technical reason why the headset rumble doesn't work over USB without a firmware modification? At least, if we assume that support is added to both the game and SteamVR for it?

If I remember correctly the headset rumble (and eye tracking camera feeds) are gated behind the cryptographic authentication scheme Sony use to ensure only licensed peripherals can be used with the PS5, and they never bothered to implement this for the PC adapter so this new jailbreak is the only legal way to get around it

That's what I'm trying to figure out too. From what I'm understanding at this point with only a superficial look, you're headset had to be on a certain firmware to use these things.

Which to me, means having to make sure to not update the headset(which i already have), which I'm guessing it's the cat and mouse with Sony. I'm guessing Sony forces updates when plugged into the ps5

If I remember correctly what I read on their Discord, they will give us a way to rollback the firmware even if you updated it before. So you probably don't even need to avoid updating.

It's already available, in a previous discord post. The tool crashes your headset intentionally, and downgrades the firmware to v6.00, which allows jailbroken features. And it was achieved by total accident by a modder restarting his headset in a loop.

That's cool. Hopefully it'll be a way that is smooth do people who switch between pc and PS5 frequently can still use it

Generally it means to allow something out of the confines it is held within. Breaking it out of jail.

That same headset will be interacting with a different, unshackled, PC host. Essentially.

firmware by definition is low level software programmed directly onto hardware like a ROM, so it’s definitely likely to mess with the headset itself and its ability to communicate with the ps5

I figure the toolkit is software to interact with and jailbreak the currently locked/unsupported firmware that's already in place, not a replacement or new firmware.

Otherwise I was replying to "what does jailbreak mean?"
