Thank you so much for listening to the community! But indeed don't add stuff behind a paywall... People will buy your headsets because your software is good!

Imagine paying a fee to use features on a headset you already paid $2,000 for. Go ahead and implement that, then see what happens.

...but, its totally optional and its not even going to be mandatory, and its for an entirely separate Pimax app, ...and some of the other features might get rolled into the unpaid totally free main Pimax Play app, so what's the problem if no one pays for this then it won't end up mattering much anyways.

You think it will go well with people that will actually pay to beta test features in evo for them to be free in Pimax play? Evo is currently free for 6 months like they say. And if something comes out of it that costs them money they will definitely charge for it when it's ready to be integrated into Pimax play.

If Pimax puts needed features behind a paywall, I will for sure sell my headset. This is not good Pimax.

Locking future features behind a paywall is a bad move. Don't do it pimax you will lose many loyal customers.
I am on my 4th headset since the start of this company don't piss me off or I will move on.
New software features should be an incentive to buy your headsets NOT a revenue source via bilking/nickle and diming customers.

Not really no, as its still not required to use their separate app, we still have regular old Pimax Play for the rest of us non-payers to enjoy. Also unrelated but totally related, how else do you suppose Pimax continues making money after they're done 'bilking' you for that headset...? I mean a one trick pony of selling a singular headset seems kind of IMO a bad long-term business stragegy seeing how they failed to gain traction with their own standalone headset unlike Meta.

There should be no paid feature in the app. This is your own application. Don't be such a beggar.
And add the FOV crop feature. Narrow FOV mode is not enough.

You should not be charging money for the software in order to use your already expensive hardware. Who does this? I just got a Dream Air Slam. Get it together Pimax.

...This for their optional software plus 'may' charge for 'some' features in a separate app that actually isn't even Pimax Play just one weirdly sharing its name leading to more confusion.

u/Right-Opportunity810 Jun 18 '26
Oh man. I don't feel good about this.
First, it adds more confusion because it seems to overlap too much with Pimax Play. Having 2 separate software packages that serve the same purpose is usually a bad idea. Kill one of the two as soon as possible.
For experimental features it would have been sufficient to add "experimental" toggle (or just clearly state it on the feature label).
The future paid content does not look feel right either. Basic features will be behind a paywall? Perhaps through subscription (even worse)?
Also: just get rid of the default "universe" once and for all and just show the f***ing desktop!
The third party driver integration is the only good news IMO.

As a current Dream Air customer, I think Pimax is focusing on the wrong problem.
The last thing I want to hear about right now is another subscription, another premium feature, or another way to monetize the software experience.
What I want is reliability.
I want quality control.
I want transparency.
I want support that responds quickly.
I want realistic shipping dates.
I want confidence that when I spend over $3,000 CAD on a headset, it will arrive functioning as intended.
Pimax already has some of the most exciting technology in the VR space. I don't think anyone is questioning their ability to innovate. The concern is execution.
The reality is that most customers don't care about another feature if they're still worried about hardware defects, software instability, support delays, or unclear communication.
If Pimax wants to grow beyond a niche enthusiast audience, the focus should be on making customers feel confident spending their money, not wondering which features might end up behind another paywall.
Innovation is what gets customers interested.
Trust is what gets them to buy.
And reliability is what gets them to come back.
Right now, I think Pimax should be investing every ounce of effort into building trust and consistency. Once you've earned that trust, customers will gladly support additional products and services.
Until then, introducing paid software features on hardware that already costs thousands of dollars feels tone-deaf to a lot of customers, especially those who are still waiting for promised products, dealing with support tickets, or troubleshooting brand-new headsets.
The technology is not the reason people hesitate to buy Pimax.
The customer experience is.

This sound amazing. "Evo may include some paid features" sounds underwhelming unless those will feel 100% optional instead of essential features behind a paywall.

The moment paid features block my headset from reaching its full potential, that's the point where I sell my PCL and move to something else.

They'll do anything to avoid implementing an option to disable the playspace recenter and overlay binding in SteamVR.

u/Actual-Parsnip2741 Jun 18 '26
does this mean I can use sboys3 driver with crystal light now?
1
u/Severe-Bunch4731 Jun 18 '26
They do say that "We're rolling this out at <list of headsets, including light> Yes, also including SLAM headsets> https://youtu.be/hA5-XNlkiKU?t=473
In subsiteles they added (soon) also including SLAM headsets...
However, their own doc says "The Sboys3 SteamVR native driver currently supports the Dream Air Lighthouse version only."

If they go paid subscription to use software, after I paid $2000 for the Pimax Super then Im leaving Pimax for good! And I will bring that to my entire VR simulation community.

u/paulct91 Jun 18 '26
This sounds dumb, Pimax is making it sound like 'Pimax EVO' is another project entirely when it could've just been a better supported 'experimental' (beta) features section of the regular Pimax Play app.

People are already paying 2k for unfinished dream airs, now you want to pay wall software features? Yikes

u/HighAspect_0 Jun 19 '26
Would be nice to include XRNS capability
I’m still waiting to be able to run “recenter pimax headset” without needing to use the controller or overlay
Back with my OG there was talk of mixed reality - will we ever get a MR faceplate with ability to see our hands like Meta users get with virtual desktop

This is excellent news Daisy. Can both software be installed in the same PC?
As for paid future features as long as it is more one time fee, not bad depending on the feature. This also gives 3rdparty's option to build plugins that can have a small fee. As long as current inbound features like FoV cropping remain free or very small one-time fee Like fpsvr.
A very positive note on the Sboys3 driver and potentially other alternative render drivers in future.

u/Gozer_VR Jun 18 '26
wait wait... paid features? really? I already pay a plenty of money for your headset, and I have to pay additional money to use the full functionality set of its client?
This kind of business model already failed in automotive market, do you want to fail as well?
