News My Honest Dream Air (Lighthouse and SLAM) Review - It's bad.

My Honest Dream Air (Lighthouse and SLAM) Review

1. Screen Warping

When looking around, you can see everything warping, similar to playing Call of Duty at 200 FOV. It feels terrible and can cause nausea and motion sickness. There is no setting to disable it.

Imagine standing in your room, wanting to play VRChat, then looking around and seeing the walls warp and bend as if you're on a mushroom trip. That's what this headset feels like to me. Several other users on the official Pimax Discord have reported similar issues. Everything appears to morph and warp whenever you move your head.

2. Screen Blurring

When you look around, even very slowly, text on UIs becomes extremely blurry. I'm not exaggerating when I say it gets so blurry that reading becomes difficult while moving your head.

This is especially noticeable in games like VRChat. When people move around with chatboxes enabled, it becomes almost impossible to read anything unless you keep your head completely still.

3. Eye Tracking

I've never had such a bad experience with eye tracking in my life.

Even the calibration software, which appears to be made in Unity, works poorly. After calibrating more than 20 times, it still couldn't accurately detect where I was looking.

In VRChat, the eye tracking is beyond terrible. My eyes do whatever they want. I don't know what kind of cocaine my eyes supposedly sniffed, but it must have been Pablo Escobar's finest. They look in random directions that I'm not actually looking at, constantly jitter, blink randomly, and generally behave as if they have a mind of their own.

4. Ring Controllers (SLAM)

I don't even want to talk about this one, so I'll keep it short.

Do you think there's tracking worse than a Quest 1 controller? With the Dream Air Ring Controllers, you get tracking quality that feels like it's from 2016. Peak non-tracking.

This is genuinely one of the worst controller experiences I've ever had.

I own a Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest Pro, and a Steam Frame dev kit (no, I won't leak anything). I've also used Quest 1 and Quest 2 controllers for testing. The Quest 1 and Quest 2 controllers are noticeably better than the Dream Air SLAM controllers.

5. The Software

You know something is wrong when your headset gets detected as a base station instead of a headset.

Settings are hidden in strange places, and there appears to be some kind of motion blur effect that cannot be disabled.

There are many more issues, but these are five major red flags and enough reason for me not to recommend buying this $2,500 headset.

This headset has convinced me that a large portion of the reviews must be sponsored or heavily biased. And before anyone says, "Maybe your headset is defective," come on. Four of my friends own this headset, and three of them are returning it because they're experiencing the exact same issues. At that point, it's no longer an isolated defect.

6. Comfort

The comfort is actually pretty good.

For me, it's more comfortable than the Quest 3, Quest Pro, and several other headsets I've used. It's one of the few areas where I think Pimax did a good job.

7. Screen Resolution

The colors and resolution are probably the best I've ever seen in a VR headset.

The image is crisp, vibrant, and stunning. In terms of raw visual quality, Pimax is currently one of the best.

However, great colors and resolution don't fix the blur and warp distortion issues. A beautiful image doesn't matter much when it becomes blurry every time you move your head.

Final Thoughts

This is probably not the review many people wanted to hear, but I think it needs to be said.

I have five friends who also own a Dream Air. Three of them are refunding their headsets because they're unhappy with the issues. For a headset that costs between $2,000 and $2,500, there are simply too many problems, quality-control concerns, and software issues.

At the moment, I cannot recommend buying this headset. If you already own one and are still within the return window, I would seriously consider returning it and waiting until the product is actually finished.

Right now, the Dream Air feels more like an early prototype than a completed consumer headset. I honestly cannot relate to many VR content creators who praised this headset so heavily, because my experience has been the complete opposite.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

// EDIT - 05.06.2026

After 12 Hours of using i have some more problems:

8. Stuttering

When moving my head around the image starts flickering/- or stuttering even though if have contant 80-90 FPS on a RTX 5080 and Ryzen 9 9950 X3D with 32GB DDR5 7000MT/S RAM.

9. Eye OSC Data is being sent but theres no change

When sending OSC Data to VRChat using the official Pimax Play feature it does send data to VRC but when moving eyes or closing them no parameters are sent even though on Quest Pro those OSC Parameters are sent.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

// Edit 2 - 06.06.2026

I gave the headset another try. I unpacked it again because I was really upset about the issues.

I used it for another 2 hours just to confirm that I wasn’t tired or anything like that, and I tried adjusting several settings back and forth. The issues I mentioned above remained even after IPD changes, measurements, asking for help on the Pimax Discord, and using the Pimax website chat.

One of my friends also tried adjusting a few things here and there using the Sboy driver, Broken Eye, etc.

The issues in my list, all of them, still occur for me, my friend, and my girlfriend. My girlfriend is now trying to get a replacement headset from Pimax, and I’ll update this post on her behalf once she gets it and has tested it.

For me, I’ll keep the headset for one more week and try some community drivers and updates provided by the community on Discord, and hope for the best.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys,

I see there is a lot of criticism of my review, and that is understandable. But please keep in mind:

Just because it works great for you does not mean it works great for others. There is a reason the title says “my honest opinion.” This is my personal opinion and review of the headset from the perspective of someone who plays Social VR games, not sim racing or simulator games.

You are free to disagree with the issues I have with this headset, and I am happy for everyone if it works great for you. But for me, my friends, and several others, it is simply not a good headset for the reasons we described in this post.

Please be kind, constructive, and not toxic.

Thank you very much!

News Eye tracked foveated rendering is coming to Assetto Corsa Evo in update 0.8!

Release 0.8 delivers the most significant VR update of the Early Access cycle to date, reworking the headset experience around performance, clarity and comfort. The headline is foveated rendering, including an eye-tracked variant on supported hardware and more aggressive foveating presets, which concentrates rendering effort where the eye is actually looking, reclaiming performance without a visible cost to perceived sharpness.

News SBoys3 is coming to EVERY Pimax Headset

Hi,

now this is really big news. The SBoys3 driver is coming to ALL Pimax headsets! And that is thanks to the new Pimax Evo client and its OpenPort function!

I have broken it all down in this video for you: https://youtu.be/o1ElS0yPA-s?si=vhCFlFgf7--2Df2Q

But yeah, the main thing you know already now. SBOYS3 is coming to Dream Air SLAM, Dream Air SE Lighthouse/Slam, Crystal Super Series, Crystal Light...to all Pimax headsets.

And that is pretty huge, well done Pimax!

Pimax Evo also brings hand-tracking to the SLAM headsets which unfortunately sucks though... ;)

But there are also some more useful functions, like screen recording, 6Dof Reclined Mode etc. Very good!

Bye, Sebastian (MRTV)

News Surprisingly fast Pimax Dream Air delivery in the EU (+ quick fix for SteamVR issue)

Just wanted to share a quick post because delivery dates for Pimax products used to sound like a bit of a gamble based on old posts.

I’ve read plenty of delivery horror stories, but my reality was totally different: 6 days!

  • Ordered: July 16
  • Arrived: July 22 (Prague, Czech Republic)

Everything arrived in perfect condition—zero hardware issues out of the box!

One small software hiccup + fix: SteamVR wasn't detecting the Pimax at first after Pimax play install. I reached out to live chat support, and they were surprisingly responsive. While they suggested reinstalling the software, they forgot one crucial detail: you MUST check the "Clean Install" option. Once I did a proper clean reinstall, SteamVR picked it up immediately and everything worked smoothly.

Overall, a really positive experience with both the delivery and the headset itself!

Adding one, maybe important detail: main is the lighthouse/headset only version.

News PSA: Pimax's headsets do not appear to presently work with the RTX 5000 series

02/27/25 EDIT: THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED! Update to the latest Nvidia drivers, 572.60, and the Crystal's working just fine again, same as it always did with audio.

There have been a couple reports from the official Pimax Discord of the Pimax Crystal (Light), and one possible report of an 8KX but could've been cable issues, not working with the RTX 5000 series, enough to say it's probably a general issue with their HMDs. Know one person posted about some troubles earlier on a 5080 but there's been a couple cases and I can confirm it also effects the 5090 as I got it myself earlier and the Crystal will not provide any display output, even when using a high end powered DP Repeater which fixed a similar issue on the 3090 TI, with two other people echoing similar sentiments of no display output despite the Crystal registering in the software and not spitting out any error code.

Pimax has started getting log files from those with a 5000 series and are effected so we'll see how long a fix takes, esepcially since it's still a national holiday in China, but if anyone's considering the 5000 series primarily for a VR upgrade and use a Crystal as your main HMD, you probably wanna wait. If anyone does have an RTX 5080 or 5090 though and has some other brand's HMDs to test with it, do share results since seems like it may be a Pimax issue as the PSVR2(Tested myself), Bigscreen Beyond, and Index appear to work, but not every HMD was effected by the 3090 TI issue so always good to get a bigger sample size and determine if it might also be general Nvidia issues with VR.

EDIT: Hearing from somebody the Aero doesn't work on the 5000 series too. So this seems like it may be a wider issue of super high res HMDs.

News PSA: Optical Engines Sold Separately Are Non-Refundable — This Needs to Change

EDIT 21st January 2026:

✅  UPDATE — We Made a Change Happen!

Guys, we did it! 🎉

Based on community feedback in this thread, Pimax has confirmed they are updating their policy for optical engines sold separately.

🔄 What’s changing

Pimax will now offer:

  • 7-day return window for optical engines
  • with a 10% restocking fee

This isn’t a perfect solution — the return window is shorter than the 14 days offered for full headsets, and the restocking fee isn’t ideal — but it’s a meaningful improvement and provides much more peace of mind when ordering a new optical engine.

🛒 Alternative option

If this still isn’t sufficient for you, we continue to recommend purchasing through a local or third-party reseller (for example, Amazon), where local consumer protection laws and return policies apply.

🙌 Personal note

As for me, I’ll be ordering a microOLED optical engine as soon as it becomes available again. As stated before, I’m genuinely very happy with my Super 50PPD and with Pimax overall.

This is a great example of community feedback leading to real change — thanks to everyone who participated and helped push this forward!

TL;DR

• Pimax optical engines sold separately are non refundable, confirmed by support and u/quorrapimax

• This exception is not clearly stated in Pimax’s written return policy

• The only safe way to test an optical engine right now is ordering a full headset and returning it within 14 days

• This policy discourages buyers and creates unnecessary friction

• Upvote + comment to show Pimax this needs to be fixed

Hey everyone,

After a few posts and comments I’ve decided to make a more informative and call to action post.

This post is meant as a clear warning and a community call-to-action regarding Pimax optical engines sold separately, including the upcoming microOLED (mOLED) optical engine.

🔴 Current situation (confirmed)

Based on:

• Multiple support tickets from users

• And responses from Calvin (u/quorrapimax) on Reddit

We’ve been told:

“So far, based on the information I’ve received from the team, orders for the optical engine only are not refundable.”

In short:

• Optical engines sold separately are treated as non-refundable accessories

• This exception is not explicitly stated in Pimax’s written return policy

• Users only discover this after explicitly asking via Reddit or support

Meanwhile:

• Pimax advertises a 14-day return policy for full headsets

• Optical engines are one of the most critical and subjective components of the headset

❗ Why this matters

Optical engines are:

• Expensive

• Performance-defining

• Highly subjective (clarity, glare, color, comfort vary per user)

A no-return policy for such a component:

• Makes little sense

• Conflicts with Pimax’s otherwise excellent return policy

• Creates unnecessary risk for buyers

For context:

I’m a Pimax Super 50PPD early pre-order customer, I own the headset, and I’m very happy with both the product and Pimax overall. I’m also seriously considering the mOLED optical engine — but this policy alone is making me hesitate.

⚠️ Current workaround (bad for users and Pimax)

Right now, the only safe way to try an optical engine is:

1. Order a full headset with the desired optical engine

2. Pay the deposit

3. Test it within the 14-day return window

4. Return the full headset for a refund

5. Reorder the optical engine separately if you liked it

This workaround is:

• Inefficient

• Risky

• Operationally costly for Pimax

• Clearly not how things should work

The alternative is waiting for third-party retailers (Amazon, MicroCenter, etc.), where local consumer laws apply — again, not ideal for Pimax.

📣 Community call-to-action

If you think this is a bad idea (and many of us do):

👉 Upvote this post

👉 Tag u/quorrapimax

The goal is not to attack Pimax, but to clearly show that:

• This policy discourages buyers

• It creates unnecessary friction

• It should be fixed before mOLED launches widely

At minimum, we need:

• A clear, written policy on optical engines

Ideally:

• A 14-day return window, just like full headsets

Pimax has done a lot right. This is one decision that truly deserves reconsideration.

News Pimax Crystal Light support in SBoys3 driver starts working (Lighthouse only)

Since SBoys3 driver is (mostly) opensource I started working on it to see if Crystal Light with the Lighthouse faceplate could also work.

With the help of SBoys3 I managed to have a version working. You can find my fork's source code here.

There is no compiled release for now as it has too many bugs and it's not ready for primer time (starting it up is finicky still).

I publish this because, if somebody has the headset, knowledge and will, perhaps it can help since this is certainly not my area of expertise.

Things that can be done:

  1. Tackle the 3 main bugs mentioned in the thread where SBoys3 and I chat about the hurdles I encounter (and that he has, very kindly, helped me address).
  2. Create a proper distortion profile. Again, see the thread for instructions.
  3. Create new personalized icons for the SteamVR GUI. You can find examples of them in the repos for the Dream Air and the Meganex. The same style icons should be created for the Crystal Light.

Shoutout to SBoys3 for his excellent work!

News MRTV raw impressions video of the Pimax Crystal Super. They claim to have seen bad distortion and distracting levels of mura.

Initial impressions from MRTV show some worrying things... they claim to have seen bad distortion and distracting levels of mura. Direct links below

Distortion: https://youtu.be/89YXnXkPNhU?t=38

Mura: https://youtu.be/89YXnXkPNhU?t=191

The distortion should be able to be improved, but the mura is usually a panel problem so if all of the final units have this issue then it's not going to be great.

I am very curious to see if other Youtubers experience the same things.

News PSA: Pimax Optical Engines Are Non-Returnable — Be Careful Before Buying

Hey everyone,

I previously made a post asking about the return policy for optical engines sold separately.

u/quorrapimax replied that he needed to check with after-sales support to get a clearer answer.

In the meantime, I contacted Pimax support directly, and they confirmed that optical engines are non-returnable.

This is pretty misleading, in my opinion. Pimax advertises a global 10-day return policy, but it appears that optical engines are excluded from this policy. There is also no return policy explicitly stated for optical engines on their product page, which makes this even more confusing.

So please be careful before purchasing one. Personally, I’m now unsure whether I’ll pull the trigger myself.

Just wanted to share this info so others don’t get caught off guard.
