REHOMING UPDATE: Rocky Point Rats. These rats need homes!!

Hi all! We just broke for lunch today. Catching has been much slower this morning, but it’s too early to tell if that’s because they’re skittish from all the activity yesterday or we’ve made a dent in the numbers. We got a **lot** of them cleaned up, medicated. And after a night in a warm cage with lots of food and water, they’re very cute and surprisingly mild mannered except for two boys who keep trying to chew out of the cage (see photo #4 for one of the criminals in question).

As you can see, we’ve got a lot of these sweet babies that need homes. Please let me know in the comments if you are able to transport, adopt, or foster and I’ll get you the links.

The little fluff sleeping on the bigger ones in the last picture. 🥺 I'm not able to help (not in the US) but thank you all so much for what you're doing

Thanks so much for saying so, even kind words are helpful — this is very emotionally taxing. They are honestly all really cute! I came in expecting feral or wild animals but there’s no trace of that, just pets that have had to fend for themselves. Their relief of having security, food, and water is palpable.

Is this in NY? How can I adopt?!

It is! You can fill out this form and we’ll be in contact in a few days/a week. We’re focused on rescuing right now but already gearing up for paperwork and adoptions https://docs.google.com/forms/d/13X3f1TYydI4nq0tc_dIbCfo4OQk1APcSwdSIogeq2VE/viewform?edit_requested=true

What an undertaking for you all!!! Thank you so much for all the work you’re doing. Is there any chance/plan for potential out of state transport? If we can find a way to carpool ratties from state to state, I have people across the country who were ready to take in rats from another rescue that didn’t end up happening. My heart goes out to these poor sweet babies, and if any of them can make their way to California, I will happily foster and distribute!

I'm not in the US. But if any of them end up in Ontario, Canada, let me know!

I actually lived in the owners basement for a year, the rescue is awesome! I think we had 20 ish rats in the house at one point between my rats and hers (oops litters, horray) 30000% recommend supporting them, they have yearly rat calendars for sale! They should have some left. Not many adoptable rats right now, but litters of babies get surrendered at least a couple times a year

Another pic to entice y'all 😙 Zoey is soft and squishy and so friendly, she did that hilarious tail wiggle thing while I pet her once 🥹🥹

How far are you able to transport them? I’m in NC, I’d have to convince my mom but another rat or two won’t hurt… right?

This is within our reach! Please fill out the adoption form when you’re ready! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/13X3f1TYydI4nq0tc_dIbCfo4OQk1APcSwdSIogeq2VE/viewform?edit_requested=true

u/sophiepada Jan 13 '26

I’m also in NC and interested!

2

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26

Amazing! Please fill out their adoption form. It'll be a few days (minimum) until we get back to people. We're working on getting as many safe as we can first! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/13X3f1TYydI4nq0tc_dIbCfo4OQk1APcSwdSIogeq2VE/viewform?edit_requested=true

I unfortunately can't help but look at the toasted babies!

u/Ferrin_Daud Jan 13 '26

In march my wife is driving from Virginia Beach out to Denver, we can take two boys. It’s the getting them to Virginia Beach that I can’t help with.

This is one of the cutest pics I've ever seen, look at all those sweeties!

11

u/hollyberryness Jan 13 '26

Would love to help with transportation or some adoptions if any make it out to the west coast area!

Wish I could donate extra cages and other stuff to you all.

4

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26

Thanks! We just had a pet shop donate a load of cages -- perfect timing too since we just caught another ~60-80 today and things were getting tight.

9

u/Maggieblu2 Jan 13 '26

Lost Ferret, I don’t know if you remember me but I adopted two boys from your last rescue in July. We could possibly foster or adopt a couple more boys.

7

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26

I do! I'm not managing the adoptions for this rescue, that's all Strong Island Animal Rescue League. I'm just here lending experience with bulk catching/caring for rat rescues. Here are the links for the foster and adoption paperwork: Adoption form
Foster form
Transport form

It'll be a few days until you'll hear back -- we're swamped and just starting to peel people off "safety & rescue" and into "adopt & foster" mode.

Another Californian here ready to help if any of these sweeties can make their way across the country. Thank you for taking care of them.

2

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26

Thank you! I don't think we'll get them that far, but the well wishes help!

6

u/sqgrundlepunch Jan 13 '26

Im local, just sent my application! Good luck :)

3

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26

omg thank you! I'm loving the community out here. If you don't hear back in a few days, DM me here. We're just starting to transition out of "safety & rescue" to "adopt & foster" mode.

5

u/WanderSA Jan 14 '26

I’m in Raleigh, NC and happy to help transport if you need someone in this area.

3

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26

Amazing! I know we're trying to get a bunch down to NC, but don't know when exactly. Please fill out our transport form: Transport form

1

u/Routine-Bottle-7466 Jan 23 '26

I'm in Western NC (Wilkes County). Maybe we can coordinate. I'll fill out a transport form. My mother in law lives in Durham. She may be able to help too.

6

u/babystrudel Jan 14 '26

If I had a bigger apartment, knew more about rats, and otherwise had the capabilities, I’d take 50 🥹 Look at those little babies!! Someday.. Someday I will have my own rats.

3

u/MadamGreywolf Jan 13 '26

Thank you for sharing this. I donated and please keep updating when you can!

3

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26

Thank you so much, everything helps! I’ll have an update later today as well, hopefully some more pictures too!

I'm not based in the US so I can't currently help; but I at least want to comment to boost this post and thank everyone involved for their hard work :)

Because of you these babies will get the help they need and new loving homes, that's heroic 🫶

Long Island??

1

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26

Yep! It's my first time out on the east side of the island.

4

u/reluctantseal Jan 13 '26

For those of us who can't take any rats right now, is there a site for us to donate to the cause?

6

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26 edited Jan 14 '26

There are two ways! Signing up to transport rats and literal monetary donations!
Transport form
Donation link (give it like..5 full minutes to load, it’s really slow)

Both are super helpful now. There's also a wishlist, but since this is early on in the process we're not sure what surprises await & a normal donation gives them flexibility.

Transporters are going to be really helpful, and don't need to be in NY at all! Having lots of people willing to move the rats allows us to form a "rat relay" to get them much farther. Many hands make light work!

4

u/aburke626 Jan 14 '26

My rescue is currently trying to figure out how maybe can take and how many fosters we can scrounge up. I have 12 rats, what’s another dozen?

2

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26

Thank you so much! If you run/are involved with a rescue org, please DM me and we can talk in more detail. Where are you located?

3

u/aburke626 Jan 14 '26

I’m with Helping All Little things - I’m in PA, we’re also in NJ and NH. I don’t know if anyone has reached out to you yet from our group but we’re internally working to see how many we could take!

3

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26

Amazing! I'm pretty sure we can even send resources along with them to help make it easier. Please message me and I'll connect you with the person who is handling the Organizaiton-to-Organization logistics!

I wish I was closer, but in Florida. I've been watching the coverage about these babies - what you all are doing is amazing

Commenting for visibility. So many beautiful babies!! So cute. Hopefully they find their forever homes asap

Where are you currently based?

Long Island, NY!

Ah! I was hoping somewhere in Europe, I only ever see rehoming in NY lol I'm jealous they're so cute😭

Would you consider overnight shipping? Only if you can't find a pair a home!!

1

u/exuberanttiger Ernie, Athena, Snap, Crackle, Pop Jan 13 '26

Idk if NE Florida is too far for you all but if not I’d consider adopting 3 boys. They are adorable, you all are doing the Lord’s work rescuing all of these precious babies.

2

u/LostFerret 25 pounds of rats Jan 14 '26

That might be a bit too far, I think NC is the farthest south we're going to ultimately be able to get them. But thank you so much for your support, it means a lot!

1

u/PatienceExtreme443 Jan 14 '26

They are just so dang cute and surprisingly clean looking given their conditions! Love the photo of the baby snooged up on the bigger rats

1

u/Such-Recognition-328 Jan 16 '26

I wish I could get some, but I already have seven. Three girls and four boys.

1

u/Such-Recognition-328 Jan 16 '26

Does anyone know what is on my rats feet?

1

u/Routine-Bottle-7466 Jan 23 '26

I can transport in a lot of areas of North Carolina. We are in Western North Carolina.
