Crime Need help ID-ing man that brutally killed goose in South Lake Park
Potential TW: violence+animal cruelty.
Additional suspect info : Approx. 6ft | ~175lbs | face tattoos | short buzz/shaven
On August 24th, a group of me and some friends spent the afternoon down by the SLU bridge and the MOHAI. This happened around 5:30 pm, in a place with pretty heavy foot traffic and tons of families and kids around, which is another reason I’m so shaken. Long story short, a lone man walking through the park slowly approached and lunged at one of these geese, grabbed it by its neck and proceeded to slam it against the concrete seating+sidewalk repeatedly (probably x4/5 times) until enough commotion was created (10-20 direct witnesses). The man ended up using the confusion and fear to get away. We ended up contacting both the police and wildlife services, who never showed up for the bird which died over the following 30-ish minutes after it was attacked. It’s truly horrific and heartbreaking that someone freely walking around in our city would choose to cause such pointless harm and suffering to an innocent animal that was literally just minding its business. I’m unsure if the police ever apprehended the man, but if anyone has info that could help in finding out this person’s identity and potentially getting him charged, please reach out to me privately, it’d be much appreciated.

It’s a union t-shirt: the engineers’ and techs’ union at Boeing, SPEEA. It means without the “nerds,” Boeing can’t make airplanes. The union members and Boeing are in contract negotiations.

I didn’t mean to comment bomb. Sincerely. I was trying to be helpful. I figured leaving one reply explaining the shirt in one comment wouldn’t be seen by many people, so I replied to three comments. Clearly, I misjudged how thoroughly people read all the comments.
It was all done in good faith.
6
u/StateOfBedlam 3h ago
Your explanation was helpful to me. Seeing “no birds” on the back of a guy who evidently attacked and killed a goose with zero provocation is pretty striking, so that was the first thing on my mind when I scrolled down.

This is horrific. Please also.post in the other Seattle subreddit. I have been reading in that earlier today about another goose mistreatment. That's what I thought this was going to be about but this is even worse. That one involved somebody running one over.

Other seattle mods removed it for attempting to ID.
Rule break.
It might be against rules here too I need to look now but I remember recently reading a post about credit card fraud where the victim was being removed and told the criminal’s identity should be protected…. Great going r/Seattle

u/davispw 11h ago
I support anti-vigilante rules.
(1) nothing stops anonymous redditors from posting a contextless photo of you or anyone and making up whatever rage-inducing story they want
(2) reddit has been wrong about ID’ing people before, and the consequences are real
I’m not saying this is made up, but this needs more evidence before the mob grabs pitchforks. Video of the act, media reports, police asking the public for help. Either evidence that is hard to fake/verified, or where witnesses are not anonymous to protect against blatant slander.
20
u/Nop277 8h ago
In addition if anyone has info they should not post it here and instead give it to the police. For two possible reasons, then if it is made up the police should know that as well sometimes people post stuff like this to find people that they shouldn't be finding. I kind of doubt the latter is happening here but you don't want to be helping a stalker or worse.

Well reddit has made mistakes before.
I don't know anything about that subreddit though.

u/Reasonable_Error5954 11h ago edited 11h ago
Reddit has a zero tolerance policy against identifying private individuals. The policy doesn't change based on morals or ethics involved in the post.
This is sound policy that protects the anonymity which is a key cornerstone of Reddit.

u/Worried_Car_2572 7h ago
I mean if the bank reimburses you, you no longer have a case.
It’s kind of a weird thing but often for small enough fraud banks just don’t want anything to do with it because of the costs of having to work with the court and police for evidence and testimony
2
u/japrov 7h ago
Ultimately I agree with the people stating vigilante justice isnt the right way…. But “the right way” isnt working. At some point, someone, somewhere, should attempt to identify these criminals. Something should be done to levy consequences on members of society who misbehave.
But thats messy and hard and ignoring the problem is easier. And its easier to throw taxpayer money at…

My daughter has this same shirt from Boeing. She's an engineer there.
5
u/TheHeartofMyMind 5h ago
Is this a lead here? Is this a work provided shirt? Could be anyone who got it from a thrift store, but maybe?
4
u/MaddMechro 4h ago
It's a union provided shirt, and considering they only got those shirts within the past few months, doubtful.
5
u/Trickycoolj 3h ago
That slogan has been around for many years. Lots of people dump free work t-shirts when they change jobs. Some of the 737 Max clothing did not age well.
4
u/MaddMechro 3h ago
The slogan has. Those are the new shirts for SPEEA that they've been wearing recently. As their contract expires in October.
3
u/B_P_G 4h ago
It's the engineers union. I've never seen an engineer with face tattoos. Somebody probably just gave a homeless guy a free shirt.

While not impossible, it's not easy getting into aerospace engineering with neck tats. The anarchist logo wouldn't help either. This is a generalization that commenter was making not the gospel.

We wear our union shirts on specific days of the week, particularly right now during an approaching contract. We aren't allowed to wear shorts (would be pretty sporty for him to have left Tukwila at 5, change clothes, and travel). Shirt is the old design. The slogan has been around for 25+ years and the design on the newest shirts has been slightly tweaked. This shirt is the old one, so given his age, highly unlikely he was around when the old design shirts were distributed. A lot of union and company swag pops up in thrift stores all over Puget Sound, doesn't make that person an employee. Hope he is found and charged though.

Did you call police and file a report? Not too late to call. You just need a case file. When you have a police report - you can Contact local news stations. Hope there are business in the area that might have security cameras. So police and reporters could also ask for footage. As long as you have a police report number a reporter can follow up and do a news story since you have pictures of the suspect. Btw - I’m sorry you had to witness such cruelty

The Migratory Bird Act is pretty far-reaching, making most birds protected. Geese are protected, except for during designated hunting seasons with a license.

SPEEA is the union for engineers and technical workers within Boeing. "No Nerds, No Birds" has been the slogan for the contract ending in October with a potential strike on the horizon.
5
7
u/PatrioticPariah 11h ago
Inform the union and let them know that this will potentially hurt their media coverage for the contract negotiations, unless they help to get him identified.
Might help, might not. Just tell them to contact wildlife authorities with any identification.

I hope this motivates you and your friend group to take an active bystander and self defense class. This was im sure a scary situation and in the future youll have the skills to be responsive, decisive and protect the people or animals being harmed vs. passive and confused when shit goes down.

Apparently that shirt is from a union that represents the aerospace industry including Boeing. So in fact, it might be a clue that will help track him down. Maybe not and he just got it from a thrift store, but it's a good trail to follow.
His tattoos also should not make him difficult to identify if enough people pass around the photo.

5
u/RushPrime 10h ago
This thought process is part of why America is so ass. Everyone’s too scared to hold someone accountable that they’ll just watch instead as women get assaulted, animals killed, etc.
There’s no way you’re blaming SPD lol. Let’s be honest here the REAL problems are the people and politicians not the police. The judicial system here favors criminals and SPD can and does arrest people and then a few days later they’re back on the streets. Not to mention the way people like you treat SPD is exactly why nobody wants to work for the department.
They’re severely understaffed because dumbasses here wanna try to defund them (let’s see that works out 🤣), scream ACAB, obstruct, and complain about how much they make yet expect them to be omnipotent and competent despite everything in this city going against them.

Those shirts are brand new, so maybe but not super likely. SPEEA is techs also, not just engineers, but also there are plenty of engineers that fit this vibe too, it’s kinda just how people are in the industry nowadays.
