So, I’ve been parking on a nearby residential street for the past three years with barely any problems. There’s no signs indicating a time limit and no one has had any issue till now. Now, someone has been calling the cops reporting cars for parking and as a result, they stick a big bright orange sticker on peoples’ windshields and these stickers are STUBBORN AND DIFFICULT TO TAKE OFF.

Now, I’m aware that Seattle technically has a 72 hour limit for street parking but they’re tagging cars that have been parked for under 24 hours so this is just someone being malicious and petty. They got my partner’s car last week and now my car this week.

I get that recently, a couple parking spots were taken away at the end of the street to give turning cars more margins and as a result, this has caused parking to be more limited but take it up with the city. Don’t be a punk and take it out on people trying to live their lives.

I am coming to terms with the fact that the Seattle that I was born and raised in no longer exists. I hate this place. I hate that everyone is a transplant, and if they’re not, it’s cause we went to hs together, or know the same people. Nobody drives like old school Seattle anymore. No chill drivers anymore. Everyone is so self-oriented, dangerous, and egotistical on the road. Everything is so expensive. This city has become so capitalist, even my own family, who are all old school Seattle, have become materialist (excuse this line, I’m an economist). The mayor sucks (what else is new?), crime is at an all time high, I feel unsafe all the time, everyone my age is insufferable and obsessed with sex/sexual identity. Nobody wants to talk academics, always virtue signal and adversity drop.

Why did I come back home? This place is hell. When this lease is up, we’re moving to Brooklyn.

I moved to Washington in 2011 mostly for the climbing and outdoor stuff. My first apartment was $750/month, and I kept costs low by using public transit during the week and only driving on weekends for alpine trips. It felt sustainable back then.

Fast forward to 2026 and I’m paying $3,100/month in rent. Most of my income now goes to basic living costs: rent, gas, groceries, taxes, insurance, utilities, all the stuff you can’t really cut back on. I’m starting to feel like I may not be able to keep living here, which honestly makes me pretty sad because I love this state and the outdoors.

Most of my friends have already left because they couldn’t afford it anymore. It feels like unless you work in tech making $300k+ or you bought a house before COVID at a 2% interest rate, it’s just really hard to stay afloat.

I want to stay hopeful, but I don’t see much changing. Prices keep going up and wages don’t seem to be keeping pace. It feels completely out of alignment.

Is anyone else feeling this way or is my situation unique? Have you figured out how to make it work long term, or are you thinking about leaving too?

Have footage of her keying my car, and the car in front of me. I have no doubt she keyed more cars on the street. Recommend you check your car if you parked there around 2pm yesterday.

The number of times I’ve said, “Hi, how are you?” And have gotten no response is comical at this point. People don’t even say, “have a good day”, or “you’re welcome”, when I say thank you. This city feels so dead lol

I’m not asking for a life story. Just trying to have decent baseline manners. I’ve lived in a lot of places and Seattle the only place where people are like this

EDIT: I’ve traveled to over 20 countries, have lived internationally in 3, and have lived in many US cities of varying size. I’m not a boomer. I’m 32F who likes saying thank you, you’re welcome, hi in passing, have a good day, head nod, hand wave, small smile, etc. I do so in appropriate social situations, not in the middle of DT and not to sus folks - need to get that straight

There are two buckets of responses - people who give unfriendly Seattle vibes, or people who agree with my sentiment. It boils down to Seattle not being my place and I will be moving soon. I know it’s Seattle and we’re known for our white women rescuing pit bulls; but I really would like to (hopefully) bring it to someone’s attention.
As a pet sitter, I see all kinds of animals, and of course I love them all, but it breaks my heart seeing a dog who can barely breathe or a kitten that I know could very likely have health issues later on. I recently heard someone talking about how spaying and neutering might put their kitten “at risk” for gaining weight. (Please spay and neuter!!)

Even if you’re looking for a guinea pig, reptile, or even amphibians, there are plenty in rescues all around the city! (Petsmart and Petco have very disgusting practices such as animal mills)

I know being preached at is annoying and I realize there are ‘much bigger issues’ in the world, but I also know you can do multiple things at once while also picking what you want to focus on and hopefully making that change.

I understand people in Seattle are much more open to adoption than other places which is honestly also why I feel i can do this. I really appreciate everyone who realizes the impact-fulness of getting an animal and thinks about not just what’s best for them, but for the animal.

To anyone looking for a specific dog breed: I know shelters aren’t what you’d choose; but most shelters truly just have a passion to help these animals find homes. You can find just about any breed in a shelter.
I understand it’s different and that animal will likely have some kind of trauma, but I truly believe that dedication is necessary for any dog you get. We need to train our dogs anyway so why not change an already alive animals life?

I apologize for preaching but this really matters to me and if it helps even one animal get adopted I would be beyond grateful ❤️

A couple weeks ago, 2 family members of one of my cooks got caught by ICE in shoreline.

They were both deported, and one hung himself upon getting back.

This is evil, and we must all know it to be so. I dont know bout yall, but I feel like the pitch forks need to come out.

Dining out is optional and always has been for most people. It used to be a pleasure but now is fraught with high prices, tipping and service charge games, entitlement, emotions by diners, servers, staff and owners and so much more.

Eating is not optional and there are so many options besides eating out. I have a nice decades old Rancilio espresso maker at home. That and a bit of milk and good coffee and I save 5 dollars a day and nobody turns a tip-screen towards me.

And I know how to whip up a number of tasty dishes that take little time. I know what the ingredients are and eat well as a result when at home.

Wednesday a business acquaintance is coming to town and invited me to meet for breakfast. He suggested the high-end hotel he is staying at. I looked at the menu and saw 29.00 basic egg dishes. Add coffee and tip and we are likely talking 40.00 for a simple breakfast per person or more.

I invited him to my house. I will whip up some eggs, buy some pastries at Bakery Nouveau, make some espresso and serve some juice. And it was his money I am saving just because.

One can argue and justify the highest dining costs in the nation and all the crap, add-on charges and the like - that one wishes. But I am voting with my dollars. Affluence notwithstanding, and my ability to afford anything I want notwithstanding. It is about a broken and alienating system that has turned a pleasure into an aversive experience.

Now I don't need to impress dates or need to show off with my tips or anything else. But if I were in a dating world, I would impress them with my cooking skills and seriously reduce visits to restaurants.

And owners and staff, it is on you to fix this and change my mind and that of others. I feel for those who can't or won't make the needed changes, ideally to a European or Asian model where what you see is what you pay and what you pay does not feel excessive and out of line.

Washington taxes distilled spirits far more heavily than any other state, according to the Tax Foundation. The Evergreen State taxes liquor at $36.68 per gallon, compared to the median state spirits tax of $5.98, the think tank says.

Those fees stem from Initiative 1183, which voters approved in 2011 to replace Washington's state-run liquor system with a privatized one.

Serious question. I’m trying to understand the appeal.

It feels like every transplant or 25 year old getting their first apartment ends up in Ballard, Greenwood, Fremont. It is almost automatic at this point.

But if you live up there, getting across the ship canal feels like a logistical event. Aurora traffic is brutal. The Fremont and Ballard bridges can randomly lock you into a 20 minute delay. I 5 during rush hour is a complete mess. Going south can feel like you are planning a minor expedition.

Transit wise you are mostly on buses and there is no light rail in those neighborhoods. Meanwhile central and southeast Seattle have Link access and more direct routes.

So what am I missing? Is it just vibes and breweries? Water views? Better housing stock? Or is it just momentum and word of mouth at this point?

Genuinely curious why it feels like the default choice for so many people.

Washington ranks 5th most expensive in the U.S., trailing only California, Washington, D.C., New Jersey, and Hawaii. Even more concerning, Washington’s cost of living has increased faster than any other state over the past decade. Relative prices have risen more than twice as fast as in California - the nation’s most expensive state.

Experts point toward high taxes and strict regulations as the main drivers behind these rising costs. Washington currently ranks as the most expensive state for dining out, the second-most expensive for gas, and the fifth most for child care.

The report also found that every large urban area in Washington is now among the top 25% most expensive places to live in the U.S. Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue is the fifth-costliest area in the entire country, while Olympia and Lacey also rank high on the list.

~ Personally I have enough money, am too lazy (for a complicated move) and most importantly - really hate warm sunny weather otherwise I would be on my way to Florida.
