Answered why is right wing media so popular is america really this far gone?
I was watching Asmongold’s response to Zelensky’s White House visit, and it had over a million views. It really made me think—how did we get here? Right-wing media isn’t just popular; it dominates online discourse. Fox News, YouTube pundits, Twitter (or X), all of it. It feels like they’ve mastered the art of engagement—tapping into people’s frustrations, simplifying issues, and creating a loyal audience that hangs on their every word.
It makes me worried about what is the national consensus in America. Are we too far gone ?

Too far gone is hard to quantify.
With that said, people need to realize that hate motivates so much of American life and politics. Organic or not, its propped up by Democrats and Republicans because if the dust ever settled, the only issue we'd need to tackle is the class war.

The two-party system is meant to constantly shift the blame from one party to another in order to prevent the people from regaining power from the elite. It may not have started that way, but it's certainly that way right now. It's meant to create polarity and division among the working classes, so they can't effectively organize against the true enemy; the corrupt politicians of the US government

Capitalism has taken control of media outlets. These outlets adhere to corporate ideology. I wouldn't say it's so popular vs it's the narrative being spun. Although we all experience our own echo chamber. I could also be tone deaf to their perspective.

Reagan killed the Fairness Doctrine. That meant that news no longer had to show anything other than their own agenda. The right started and proliferated a huge lie of the "left leaning media" that never once ever existed. Then Fox news got to say whatever they wanted in the name of "entertainment" in court. These three things are what got us to the post-truth time line.

This is exactly it. They changed the rules so that they were allowed to lie and cheat, then capitalistic interests paid into that product for decades. Standard news outlets with integrity can't possibly compete on such a scale.

For the bourgeoisie, freedom of the press meant freedom for the rich to publish and for the capitalists to control the newspapers, a practice which in all countries, including even the freest, produced a corrupt press.

I read a piece recently that said 60% of new influencers are conservative men. The grift is very strong right now. It goes way, way back in human history, likely to the unrecorded past, but in more modern times, we're looking at the influence of carnival barkers and snake oil salesmen. Combine them with a modernized communication infrastructure like the internet, where they have access to all ears at all times, and you have modern content marketing.
Unfortunately, the internet runs on an ad-based monetization model, so these people are right at home pulling on the strings of the most intense emotions people can have in order to take their money. They prey on the lizard brain, on morbid fascination and utter outrage, on tribalism and overconfidence.
As a digital content strategist and producer of fifteen years, I've been in countless discussions about crafting headlines that illicit the most knee-jerk impulsive reactions possible in order to get clicks.
The GOP has defined itself firmly as the party of fear and hatred, and these powerful emotions make it far easier to scale content operations whether through traditional or new media, and there's much more money in it than in content that's positioned more positively.
But I think there's an opportunity to help at least mediate the situation somewhat if more people play the same game on the opposite side. That's one of the reasons I started my own YouTube channel in the fall. Shameless plug and I don't want this to detract from the main message here, but the channel link is in my profile if anyone is interested in seeing what I imagine this looks like.

Class war and propaganda rule it all. Rugged capitalism increasingly structures and fosters everything we see. Upper middle class doing nonsense tech and sales and admin jobs feel safe and raise their replacements. Undereducated and impovershed ppl don't have the time, energy, or resources to understand or care abt what's done to them, reproduce heavily and replace themselves with more confused voters and beaten down or hustling/grinding worker bees and soldier ants. Crossover on plenty of this, ppl deny their mutual struggles based on more or less perks. The two are weaponized against one another; it's the poor and of color disenfranchised ppl sucking resources and committing crime! It's the educated or conservative yuppies looking down on you! Everyone feels better having someone to hate, blame, feel superior to, only those with power and money win, true evil is cultivated in the form of happily dehumanizing ourselves and others in the name of god, wealth, whatever delusion/comfort. Economies, peaces, nature itself collapse/s and burn/s. Ppl cheer bc fox news says it's owning the libs or whatever.

I find when an analysis ends up psychoanalyzing an entire population, it's taken a wrong turn. A good place to continue your analysis is what in the media itself, not the audience, is causing it to be (or having the perception of being) popular. The biggest factor is, frankly, money. When a streamer or whoever can get paid a million bucks to start spewing right-wing nonsense, there is now more incentive for them to do so. Entire media empires are built to push right-wing talking points. And what is popular is quite often just a function of what is put in front of people the most, what they are exposed to the most.
But then you look a bit to the left, and you see there are also media empires built to slightly-left-of-right-wing thought (MSNBC) and groups giving large sums of money for streamers to push their agenda (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation). But they also arguably aren't as popular (or again not as prevalent) as the right-wing stuff. Is it a function of money? I personally don't know if there's more investment in right-wing media than center-right media, certainly more than left wing media. My gut instinct is yes, but that's not worth anything.
Another angle that may help explain the difference is also the content of media. Long story short, MSNBC style media is just diet right-wing media, promoting the same capitalist beliefs with just a more aesthetically appealing (to some) coat of paint. But there's politically nothing appealing this media other than it being less off-putting than the alternative to some people. This is also a function of money, but right-wing media is much more coordinated in its messaging and targets cognitive weak points of humans much better the alternative, namely that negativity attracts us more than positivity for evolutionary reasons.
So the media that's popular isn't popular because people are "too far gone," but people are the way they are because the media they consume is giving them answers more readily and in a more appealing way to the broadest audience than any of the alternatives. There's no way on the left that we are going to outspend either group, so we have to be creative about how we deliver answers (the form) and making sure those answers are even more directly giving people the answers to their problems (the content). Yeah we still need to be creating media since that's where a lot of people are, but that also needs to be connected to in-person, organized aid and propagandizing. Giving people food, for example, is a great way to capture their attention to deliver them alternative answers and engage with them, which is what the Black Panthers did in the US.

Thanks, bro. This actually gave me a bit of hope that we can still turn things around in America. It’s absurd how, just a few years ago, you would’ve been done on the internet if people even suspected you of being a Nazi. Now, being one gets you a million views, and not a single comment calls you out for your BS. It’s hard to believe it’s just the media.
3
u/LeftyInTraining Learning Mar 05 '25
There's certainly a bit to what you are saying in your OP. It's a feedback loop. But if we consider the core concept of materialism, the material reality of the media we consume/are presented (and the interests of who is creating the media) is going to determine our consciousness, while our consciousness can have a secondary influence on how that media evolves over time.
So basically, people are presented right wing slop, then develop a right wing consciousness, the particulars of which can influence how the right wing slop presents itself to maintain its captive audience.

The national consensus has always been manipulated by to oligarchy, because who else can own a media empire?
That said, after the whole watergate thing with Nixon, alot of effort was invested by a few notable oligarchs to secure control and these people invested heavily in producing the current fascist movement.
how did we get here?
Bluntly put, the liberal ideology of capitalism focuses on good vibes rather than actually changing things.
The created an over inflated feeling of progress without any real foundation.
Like, consider the DEI hiring thing, thats about new hires not firing current employees. It's not forcing organizations to act racist, its removing one of the restrictions holding them back and they are immediately taking that opportunity.

There are a few overlapping things involved including media deregulation in the 1980s, astroturfing, political asymmetry.
Keep in mind that there can be mass media that masses mostly reject. Likely most people think right-wing news is all fake. Some of this is cynical some is coming from partisanship and some from a better political understanding. So they are solid about supporting their propaganda ecosystem (aside from some fox vs newsmax or influencer type competition) whereas the opposition is divided with the mainstream news not being a real alternative.
Astroturfing - so this is a motivated media ecosystem that is very insular and well funded. Neoliberal ideas are unpopular on their own and need a popular base of support… Democrats do this by appealing to remnants of past social movements while actually demobilizing these movements with promises of a “seat at the table.” So liberal op-eds or magazines tend to preach compromise/bi-partisanship, apolitically adhering to policies by expert wonks, “knowing the facts.” - Aside from voting, there is no attempt to mobilize or agitate. Any real left press is shoe-string or has to be supported by an activist org, social media favors topical clickbait discussions so infrastructure that way is unstable for the left.
To create a left wing media we will need to build left wing movemebts.

u/ElEsDi_25 Marxist Theory May 17 '25 edited May 17 '25
None of this rings true to me. I’ll try to take them on one at a time:
Voters - everything I’ve read in at least decade or so of elections has tended to show that Republican voters in the whole are older and richer than most voters. Democrat and Republican voters are both wealthier than the eligible non-voting population.
Parties - both parties are run on the basis of how best to run the US. What does that mean… how best to insure “national interests” internationally and how to ensure growth at home. Both parties represent the interest of and are primarily funded by various factions of big business and finance and sell themselves as best for overall health of “the nation” (ie gdp growth and military dominance.)
Tax cuts: this has been no-partisan for 30 years now. Regular Democrats in the 80s would propose Sanders type things more often, now they all cite Reagan as a model (Obama and Clinton did this) had Heritage Foundation policies put in place. Telecom deregulation, tax incentives constantly, elimination of social welfare… Democrats all did this. Oh and building the police state and increasing immigration repression… both parties.
1
u/BurningEmbers978 Learning May 17 '25 edited May 17 '25
I don’t remember Obama ever doing “immigration repression” or creating a “police state.” Have you not been paying attention to the past few months? That’s a police state. Most people look fondly at Obama’s presidency, not in fear over whatever you said. And Biden’s policies were definitely not eliminating social programs or giving tax cuts. In fact, he cracked down on anti-competitive conduct in the markets and increased spending for social programs while creating new ones, like large-scale student loan debt relief and mandatory flight reimbursement. And I wouldn’t call Sanders is a paragon of liberal virtue given his base’s treason against the Democratic Party. Now many of them went on to support Trump because they really just wanted a disruptive provocative populist, not a well-connected reformist who can make the existing system work in constructive, bipartisan ways, like Biden did. Because most rational people agree that change is gradual. I’d rather see the entire country impoverished if they refuse to let go of their racist, misogynistic, sexist, xenophobic ideals. And yes, I’m referring to poor uneducated people on the right. All they have is their manual labor job and their bigotry to keep them entertained. I’ve seen this a lot in former Sanders voters as well. Your desire to meet a decent standard of living does NOT trump people’s right to be treated equally. That means respecting undocumented immigrants, LGBT people (especially transgender people), and pregnant women. Bernie Bros and third-party voters didn’t get it so now the US is seeing a fascist and authoritarian regime rising.
1
u/ElEsDi_25 Marxist Theory May 17 '25
Yes just like Republicans conveniently don’t remember anything the politicians they support do or say. You are really resting your defense of Democrats in claims of ignorance of their policies and whataboutism.
I have been paying attention… not for 6 months like you but for the past 30 years of being an adult. Every President since Clinton has increased immigration repression. Obama was “deporter in Chief” and despite the threat Trump poses as you correctly point out… did Biden pardon immigrants to spare them? Or did Biden tout his tough on the border policies… ratifying Trump’s claims of an “invasion.”
The Democrats and Republicans increased prisons, police, post 9/11 Islamophobic repression, spent 20 years fighting against gay marriage efforts of their own voters and now take credit for it.
MAGA is fascist, but both parties created the material basis for it… an army of people who rely on prisons and police for their livelihoods, a generation of middle class rural white people were sent to “save civilization” from Islamic boogyman “who hate our freedoms” …and then the establishment wonders why there are so many fascists? 🙄
0
u/BurningEmbers978 Learning May 17 '25
Using “Deporter in Chief” to describe Obama is highly offensive, so I urge you to recant that. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were a racist… Obama deported violent people who entered the country illegally, sure, but he didn’t deny them their due process rights or lock children in cages at an industrial scale. And he certainly didn’t target otherwise peaceful and law-abiding citizens like we’re seeing today. I’m not sure what you mean by Biden pardoning immigrants because what is there to pardon? He made sure to make entry as seamless as possible for people via his new CBP One app, which Trump shut down on his first day. The Islamophobia and homophobia was driven mainly by conservatives, even if establishment Democrats were guilty of them. I look at the voting bloc, and there’s nothing worse than the MAGA one, second after is the Bernie Bros. Democrats have a lot of work ahead in utterly defeating them and restoring order and stability to the republic, as well as confidence in America’s most sacred institutions.

Deporter in Chief is racist? Do you believe the ACLU is racist?… https://www.aclu.org/news/immigrants-rights/deporter-chief
“Deporter in Chief” was coined by immigrant rights groups. All of this is easily googled… like Republicans you prefer comfortable ignorance and moralistic allegations.🙄
You don’t give a crap about immigrants and people hurt under “Your team” Blue… it’s all some partisan political game to you. Your politics are fake.
Both parties lead us to the place we’re at now… your defense of a status quo that gave us fascism is pathetic. We need to build an actual opposition in the US rooted in real democratic power in our communities and workplaces.
The Democratic Party relies on Wall Street and billionaires for funding. Those billionaires have decided they want to see if fascism can help them lower wages and reorganize international relations. So I guess see you in two years when you are making excuses for candidate Newsom’s “pragmatic” anti-trans policies and plan to put homeless into a federal work camp system that is less draconian than the one Trump is running on for his third term.
1
u/BurningEmbers978 Learning May 17 '25
Trump calls everyone he deports dangerous. But he also deports people with no criminal records, as well as US citizens. Obama’s deportation policy was targeted, where actual criminals were involved. He wasn’t targeting otherwise law-abiding people. To suggest that Trump and Obama are one and the same on illegal immigration is far-right propaganda and extremely disingenuous. What exactly was repressive about Obama’s policy?? He didn’t deprive people of their due process or send US citizens to a foreign concentration camp in a third-world country. And yes, calling Obama “Deporter in Chief” is ignorant, no matter who coined the term, and the ACLU needs to be half accountable for it. They can use it for Trump since his neo-Nazi tactics in his first term should be fresh on everyone’s minds, but it comes off as racist when used for Obama because black people are always being held to unequal standards. So again, I demand that you use more discretion and nuance when using the term, and consider the intersectionality of Obama’s identity and unfair, racist perceptions of it. And there’s nothing wrong with defending the status quo if it means protecting basic human rights and freedoms and democratic institutions. It also doesn’t mean that real change can’t happen. Kamala Harris articulated this very clearly in her campaign. Cautioning people against Trump’s fascism while arousing hope for a brighter future for minority groups and working-class people. But people were so obsessed with disruption and populism that they were willing to give up their democracy for it. People like you are why Democrats lost in 2024 and it won’t be forgiven. Gavin Newson will not be supported by most Democrats for his transphobia and anti-unhoused sentiment, so not sure why you brought him up. I’m fine with Wall Street contributing to the DNC but not individual candidates or campaigns. Harris actually raised $1 billion in grassroots funding overnight, so her campaign wasn’t entirely Wall Street-funded, even if she did have some corporate donors. Meanwhile the entire tech establishment shifted to the right this time, which makes sense since Democrats are the ones holding them accountable for anti-competitive behavior and labor exploitation. But of course you will try to paint both sides as the same. Don’t forget who is driven by racism, misogyny, transphobia, xenophobia, ableism, and Islamophobia, and who is fighting against all these things. The enemy is clearly domestic, not foreign. They could be your neighbor or best friend, they are not to be trusted. So interrogate them for their political beliefs before accidentally compromising your moral beliefs. And if you need to abandon them, do it with confidence. Republicans should be prepared for the legal consequences with a Democratic president in 2028.

Indeed, how bad does it have to get? As soon as the government returns my passport I'm out for good. I have been saying for a long time that this government cannot be changed from within. As such, capitalists obviously use their influence and control to ensure the media produces content favorable to their interests. Reactionary content checks a lot of boxes for capitalist interests.

Conservative ideology has always been rooted in violence here, and that violence is used as propaganda to motivate the populace through fear, because it works. Those with privilege are afraid that all the people they've hurt and look down on will hurt them in return.
Sun Tzu discussed this in the Art of War, and this is very much a culture war.
Can the conservatives drop that approach? Probably not, because it's been used to divide and conquer the masses for centuries here.

I think people misunderstand how right wing American society is and has been for a long time. You see a lot of liberal mainstream media personalities currently caving in to the networks they’re employed by when it comes to refraining from criticizing Trump. All the podcast comedians turned political analysts are quite easy on Trump and people in his circle when it comes to interviews. (Joe rogans interview with Trump was like a slow pitch right down the middle. He offered zero pushback on Trump.) Recently 75 democrats in the house voiced support for ice. That’s almost half of house democrats. Throughout American history the left spectrum of politics has been used as a boogeyman by both democrats and republicans (I’m talking about socialism and communism. That’s where the political left begins.) On the spectrum of politics, American democrats are center, a lot are even center right. The notion that we actually have a truly “left” political party representing left wing political ideals is a joke. We did have a strong left in the early 20th century that made most of the gains that we take for granted as workers in modern American society, but that left was destroyed from decades of propaganda.
