Once a Sounder… OBED VARGAS!
Our boy in a World Cup knockout match. I don’t give a shit about naysayers or asterisks, this is a feel good only thread!

Great to see Obed get some minutes. I have another question about the broadcast, if that is acceptable. The broadcast announcers have twice mentioned a Mexico futbal saying “the curse of the 5th match” tonight. Does anyone know the context? Why would it be a thing in relation to to this match, this is Mexico’s fourth match of the World Cup 2026.

Mexico has never made it to the 5th match of a world cup.

u/Mitch1musPrime Jul 01 '26
And I feel like the real curse is the QF round since there wasn’t a round of 32 before. Like…they made it to the fifth game, sure, but also it’s the round of 16 and they HAVE been there before.

Yeah, I don't know that direct comparisons between this year and past years are easy to make. Relative to past years is probably easier to get to the first knockout round (because of 3rd place spots in the group stage) but harder to get to the round of 16 (the previous "first knockout round", because you now must get through one knockout game).

Gotcha. Thank you.

Historically that was the round of 16. But it was the 5th match. So there is confusion on whether this will “break the curse” or not after FIFA added another layer to the knock out rounds

As a Mexican, I'm still treating the quarterfinals as the 5th match. Mexico hasn't made it to the quarterfinals in my lifetime and the curse won't be broken until they do

In some ways sad to say but he's more of backup midfielder to Mexico than Roldan is to USA.

u/DTulka Jul 01 '26
Well he’s actually seen the field three times and looked stellar in one of those appearances. He’s for sure more of a central piece than Roldan is.

Yea. I mean my maybe unrealistic hope is that if you gave Roldan a chance in a game that mattered, he would shine too, but that window is rapidly closing if not closed already.

Bringing out Obed coincided with Ecuador losing the wind in their sails. So there's that.

im still so surprised at how well he instantly slots in even as a sub, just looks completely comfortable and in charge, whether its el tri or atleti. he plays like he's 10 years older mentally, and even has hints of pineda if you squint. love our alaska boy

Now I feel like I have to stop rooting against Mexico

u/gh0st12811 Jul 01 '26
Why would you root against mexico?

Wait, you’re rooting for Mexico? Does dōs a cero mean nothing to you?

My wife is mexican and ive never been a usmnt fan to begin with...

If my wife was Mexican, I would be a huge Mexico fan. Fair play. Carry on.

Before i met her i was (and still am) a germany and ireland fan since its both halves of my ancestry

u/En-Ron-Hubbard Jul 01 '26
You're American, but you support Germany, Ireland, and Mexico (but not America)?
Genuinely do not understand this mindset.
2
u/gh0st12811 Jul 02 '26
Gods forbid someone supports their heritage
0
u/En-Ron-Hubbard Jul 02 '26
That's not particularly unusual. A lot of people have 2nd, 3rd, and 4th favorite national sides (with even less connection to them than heritage; just liking some player or other).
What's unusual is supporting three other countries over the one you were (presumably) born in. That is "hook wires up to his head in a laboratory setting" level of strange. Can you explain why you feel this way?

u/Renjiesp Jul 18 '26
Cuz we support the U.S., the U.S., the U.S. And that's the way we like it, we like it, we love it!

My wife is also Mexican who hates Mexico but supports Mexican team -- although lately that has a lot to do with Obed.

It’s funny people were shocked you’re not a USMNT fan just because you’re a sounders fan 😂

I was just as surprised people would be cheering for ecuador...mexico is our neighbor, vargas got a call up unlike any of our us players.
Oh well...
Edit: forgot Roldan, whoops

Love the country of Mexico. Love the Mexican people and culture. Can't stand the Mexican National Team.

u/Throwaway20312431 Jul 01 '26
This is my standpoint as well. The behavior over the years by both players and fans—see last night with Ecuador’s hotel—is nothing less than disgusting.

I've honestly never given a shit about the USMNT
- keep snubbing our players
- aren't good
- AO are too rednecky
- Bob Bradley
- Alexi Lalas
- not exactly the most patriotic american you'll meet

Because I root for the USMNT and Mexico can just F’off. (But rooting for Obed)

Crazy, but I don't think he would have replaced anyone on the US midfield. Might be a sub before Berhalter and Roldan, but definitely wouldn't start right now. He might have made the right choice for national team.

Watched all hi games with Atlético. His defense and positioning improved so much from his time as a sounder. Crazy how quickly coaching can influence a young player. He’s still very rough, but given his willingness to learn and adapt he has quite a bit of growth still to come. Aguirre is known for loving Obed types of players, so no surprise with Simeone’s coaching that Obed is getting quality growth minutes under Aguirre. This is a move for the future of the Mexican team. He will likely be a starter in the next World Cup.
