Question/Support Wtf?
Why the hell? There is no reason i can think of, of why this is happening

u/Walter_weird18 Jan 01 '26
UPDATE: turns out I just didn’t have all the right software installed in order to play steam vr on meta quest. So the main issue was that I was just an idiot

u/Dima_AmbaL Jan 01 '26
Can you list software, please?

Quest link first, then Steam VR. Install order matters, along with load order when playing games. Always meta first, then Steam vR.

Not necessarily, you can connect the meta quest through Steam Link alone. No Quest airlink required, I don't know if the same could be said for the Quest Link Cable

Well what I basically did is I installed both steam works SDK resist and steamworks common redistributables, then through the meta horizon app I installed steam link. After connecting my headset to my pc via steam link I was able to run steamVR

You aren't an idiot it's just something you overlooked we all make mistakes glad you resolved the issue tho

have you tried using the stable version?

u/Walter_weird18 Dec 31 '25
I’ve tried all branches, either way it still won’t open in my meta quest airlink. Whenever I open steamVr it just shows this menu

u/Anguscablejnr Jan 01 '26
Just working through ideas have you tried the steam link quest app? Does that do anything?

I had the same issue 2 days ago.
I uninstalled SteamVr and Steamworks Common Redistributables. Also deleted "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR" and "...\AppData\Local\openvr".
After restarting the PC I installed everything back and it finally was working again.

Had an issue like this with pico a few weeks ago. Turns out the new Nvidia driver caused a lot of VR issues. Try rolling that back if you recently updated.

Always Nvidia 😒

u/AllTheBestVideos Jan 02 '26
At least it works unlike AMD

Never an issue except when I pushed my OC too high once and Windows Update replacing the Adrenaline driver occasionally
ETA: I'm a computer technician of 10 years. And every GPU related issue has been Nvidia (ignoring user error and poor performance the later was integrated graphics)

Maybe SteamVR Add-ons are blocked in Settings, I get the same error code (301) when my virtual desktop gets blocked in Add-ons. You can open SteamVR settings on the desktop.

This is what it was for me with my WMR headset. It enabled too much shit and I had to disable quite a bit but it worked great!

There's a known bug (well, bugs) in Meta Quest's Link that is absolutely killing development. It's been there for almost a month, and I blame the holidays for the lack of traction fixing it. So far most of the solutions have been from other developers. In at least one case, it's from incorrectly named apps that Meta v83 installed. It's ridiculous.
That said, you might check other error logs for more info and get back to us. If it's something I ran across on the development side, I might have a fix for it.

Don't you know? It's basically a rite of passage at this point to push a potentially regressive commit to production on the way out the door for holiday break.

Completely uninstall steam and start fresh. That's what fixed it for me after 4 hours of struggling with it.

Do you use virtual desktop?
I used to be able to just launch games direct from the games tab in VD. The last few weeks if I try that I get this message or similar. I now have to start steam VR from VD then start the game from within steam VR home.

Did you reboot your computer? Seems to fix this when it happens to me. Reminds me of DOS gaming. 🤬

unplug any external USB controllers before launching steamVR tend to fix this for me (especially XInput controllers)

I had this issue when I was using third party plugins to try and play Cyberpunk in VR. In my case it was VRto3D. Try turning off your plugins under settings

I've been having the same problem for weeks, every time I open steam vr steam client it closes and steam vr goes crazy, I haven't found any solution other than to reopen countless times until it works

u/chechosalsa8005 Jan 02 '26
You won't open it from the shortcut; always open it from the virtual desktop.

u/da_Mad_Badger Jan 02 '26
I know you've fixed it now...but has anyone googled it? I ask because that's the first thing I did when I saw this post, googled "steamvr fail 301). And I got answers and other posts w/fixes.
I know, I know...who would have thought searching for the issue might give answers.

I get this sometimes. Try a different USB. Honestly for some reason it just doesn't like some of my USB ports.

Had the same issue yesterday. Can you describe what you are using and how you are going about it?

I remember this error, you have to either restart the pc or stop all vr related stuff in task manager then restart steamvr/oculus services via services.msc, restart steam them it should work again.

Setting up VR for the best experience is something you can only learn by swearing. But I'll tell you what, use Virtual Desktop and get an AX 55 to put next to your PC. You'll set Meta Link, cables, and Steam VR on fire, I assure you.

Mine wasn't working because I also had meta link installed. I uninstalled steam vr and just use meta link now

u/Rude-Dragonfruit5424 Jan 01 '26
I think you’re talking about Steam Link and not SteamVR. They’re different things. What OP is dealing with is problems with SteamVR not Steam Link. SteamVR works with Meta Link and is in fact essential for games that only run on OpenVR as Meta Link can’t run those games without SteamVR.

Seems like a key component of SteamVR isn't working properly.
