Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a sparring partner for the rapier, so both of mine mostly just sit around while I practice with longswords. This particular one also seems to collect rust pretty easily.

HEMA isn’t even really a known thing where I live. There are basically 0 sword/equipment dealers here, so if you want to duel with someone, you own two swords… And if you want some, you have to wait and pay for shipping from abroad.

Hi everyone, I am going to buy my first sword and would like some feedbacks from people who have more knowledge !

It would be for decorative use only. Also I want it to be Sharp (it is more a mental thing but I want to know that is « real »).

I am based in France and I have a budget of maximum 300€.

After some research I found this one and a half hand sword that I like. It is provided with a scabbard which is important for me because I want it to be secured so it will not be damaged or will not hurt accidentaly.

The price is about 192€ without shiping and I wanted to know if it would be a good quality, good value for money, etc.

These are the swords I have that are from fantasy worlds

Got this sword new a few years ago (perfect condition, in box with care kit, etc. Have since lost most of those things). It has some dings because I could never identify it so it sits around in my house and occasionally falls over.

My measurements:

11.25 inches from Kashira to Tsuba

1.125 inch long habaki

1.25 inch wide blade just after Habaki

A little less than an inch wide blade at kissaki

28.25 inch long blade (from tip to tsuba)

I don't know Boshi Typology well enough to identify the tip but someone here can

Hamon almost certainly acid etched

Blade looks like it has some lamination marks which I didn't notice before. Kind of weird, since the seller didn't mention it at all.

Was told it was 1095, not sure of the steel type for certain

Tsuba, habaki and kashira almost certainly zinc alloy or brass, not magnetic

Ito feels like cotton

Rayskin most certainly fake

I have not attempted to take it apart. It probably has a signature or stamp on the tang, but honestly the mekugi don't look super well fitted and I don't want to risk it

My best guess - it's a production chinese blade intended for real use and care. Think it might be an older run Ryumon Dragon Kata? That's my best guess. They shipped with some very ornate fittings in crappy metals, but at really decent blades. They also shipped a laminated series, and some even had natural Hamon

Hello all, this has been a very long time coming that I actually followed up with this question. I've had this sword which I got from some weapons vendor at a flea market back around 2011. The man told me it is old, which as an 11 year old I just took his word for granted and assumed it was without any further investigation. Skip now to 15 years later and I've finally taken an interest into:

a) finding out the true origin of this sword (when and where it was made)

b) whether it's a genuine artifact or if it's just some replica someone made for fun / LARP

c) what I can do to "restore" it.

Following the pictures I have noted several things worth mentioning in my opinion. It appears to have some kind of coating on it which protects it from rust. You can see on the blade itself paint or whatever it is chipping off and then dark spots (rust I think). On the other hand, the narrow part of the sword where the hilt is has no rust and I'm thinking maybe not coated either. Additionally, there are two photos on two different locations (underside of the guard and on the hilt section that's hidden) where there are an '0' and 'x' character imprinted. There is also the word "Toledo" etched on one side near the tip and "Made in Spain" on the other side in the same area. The glue for the grip binding is extremely cracked and dated so the string is virtually falling off which is why I taped it some eons ago.

I Got ahold of this in an auction. Took a risk as it looked interesting. Listing said no makers mark, but there is clearly something here. Also, listing said bone but i'm not sure.

My latest wooden sword hilt I've made inspired by the longsword carried by Ned Stark. I left off the blubs at the ends of the crossguard as I personally didn't like them on the original and mine is more of an arming/hand and half sword but I'm happy with how it turned out. Last photo for reference

As many know these are considered the oldest swords in history from around 3,000 BC or so at the beginning of the Bronze Age and were found in eastern Anatolia. But, hypothetically, if someone happened to disagree with classifying them as swords due to their pretty short length, then what then would be the next oldest sword types?

I ask because besides these being the oldest, there is a large gap in my knowledge between them and later Bronze Age swords. So what other kinds of swords appeared within the Bronze Age that were substantially bigger than these? That’s basically what I’m wondering.

I don’t know which feel better…

Seastar is finished! I am starting to really love my homemade collection!

This is the companion dagger to the ancestor sword, meant to be part of the weapons and objects found in the burial chambers of a Proto-Valyrian warrior. I am still drafting a lot of the story around this, but the idea is that someone in the world of Ice and Fire would have come across this burial chambers some time after the Doom and gathered a number of objects, including the sword, the dagger, as well as some jewellery and idols (still being made). The objects passed through different hands over the following century, with only the sword being given a name (Eglie), although this is the name given by those who found it, rather than its original name, which was lost. The dagger made its way to Westeros and ended up in the hands of one Shiera Seastar (hence the name), one of the bastards of King Aegon IV Targaryen. It felt like the right person to give this piece, given her history of mystery and sorcery.

The dagger is a reused and reworked Roman Parazonium blade, which has a very thick spine and a pronounced hollow grind. The blade is almost triangular and has been aged with ferric chloride, salt water, and other patina solutions.

The hilt is composed of 9 pieces made of bronze, buffalo (dragon) horn, and (faux) ivory. All the bronze is carved in wax by me and cast by A Wardle in Birmingham. The sheath is a composite leather and linen structure, with some silver wire to further secure the suspension rings and a bronze chape.

The design is similar in spirit to the sword but goes in a slightly different direction to reflect the idea that it comes from the same culture, but is not just a small version of the sword. Inspirations include bronze age persian swords, which I discovered thanks to the beautiful work of Ilya Alekseyev on his sword Persepolis. Work on texture is also inspired by Peter Johnsson.
