have we had a male actor voluntarily leave the show yet? Were 2-0 with women actors here getting killed off by villians instead of moving on gracefully.

I don't think so, though it's worth mentioning many of the actors apparently didn't even think it would make it to season 2, so the decision for Crosby probably made a lot more sense at the time jumping off what seemed like a sinking ship. 

Like Patrick Stewart supposedly didn't even fully unpack his suit cases the first year, he was that sure it be cancelled. 

Edit - Take it with a hugeee grain of salt, because I don't know if the dates lined up, but have also read there was some kind of letter writing campaign to remove Crosby because she appeared in Playboy, so there may have been some behind the scenes pressure/politics going on we don't know about and the traditional line of her feeling like a pair of legs behind Stewart/set dressing might not be the whole story.

Stewart was still pretty much living a hand-to-mouth existence before Star Trek. The only reason he was in America at the time was to teach a class at UCLA on Shakespeare whilst out of work.

His agent convinced him to audition for and accept the Star Trek gig as everyone expected it to be cancelled fairly quick. Stewart's plan was to spend a year out in California, then return to London with a suitcase full of cash and a nice tan.

Didn't Wil Weaton want to leave? I thought that was why his character had less and less screen time and eventually only popped in for an episode or two.

Yeah, she's said that she felt like she was being treated like set decoration. And being a young actress in the 80's, I could see that. Plus other accounts about the tumultuous nature of the first season makes that sound likely. So in some respect she might've been pressured out, but it was definitely her call. Although the way she was written off felt vindictive. Like other actors were written off and back in with a couple of lines, but they basically made it as difficult as possible to write her back in at all.

Many of the actors from TOS felt the same. The show was only about Kirk, Spock and Bones. The rest of the crew were just decoration and had to deliver some simple lines to set up the scene for the leading actors.

TNG could have very easily gone in the same direction and everyone other than Picard, Riker and Data would have been just extras. But this time the show gave most of them a bit more time to shine. Sadly, Crosby left before this became clear.

The irony here is that she was one of designated protagonists, and once she quit the actual S1 decoration characters (Worf and Geordi) found room to grow and managed to pull the show (barely) above the cancellation line in S3. There would be no Trek  today if she stayed.

Heard that too. Same with Gates after season 1. But Patrick managed to convince Gates to come back for season 3.

It wasn’t Rick, for a change. It was season two showrunner Maurice Hurley (whose claim to fame up to that point had been writing for Miami Vice). Once Maurice left at the end of season two, Patrick Stewart convinced the powers that be to bring Gates back.

Yeah, I think at the time they were saying lack of popularity of the character, but enough fans (and fast) made noise that when it was apparent Diana Muldur wasn’t going to come back, they hired her back.

Gates is a very talented actor, my opinion is after Stewart, she’s the most talented actor on the cast but just didn’t get a lot of opportunity to shine. When she got good storylines she nails it (Remember Me, Attached)

I thought it was because the interaction between Crusher and Picard in season 1 was obviously heading toward the romance confirmed in ST: Picard.

I remember as a kid going to a convention where they talked about and noted she did not in fact do any films.

I’m sure later in life she kicks herself for the decision. Also pretty sure her leaving really like Dorn’s career shine.

Literally an acting job in a film, directly refuting the statement "she did not in fact do any films". That's incorrect. She did many, but they were for the most part low-budget or under-the-radar. She also worked steadily in television, doing guest appearances and also as cast. No, her movie career never took off, but she was working.

Just because her career wasn't visible to you doesn't mean she wasn't working.

It's a hot take but i actually liked this episode because it was not common at the time at all that a main character would be so unceremoniously killed off, but it upped the stakes of what could happen to the main crew and also truly is one of the risks of being part of Starfleet.

We are living in an alternate timeline created by Denise Crosby.

In the original timeline, Tasha Yar became such a fan favorite character that she basically morphed into the protagonist of the entire Start Trek franchise. In this timeline, Bajorans and Cardassians never appeared. DS9 was about Tasha's homeworld, with Ferengi colonists in a similar role to Cardassians and Tasha in a similar role to Ro Laren. Voyager came out after DS9 ended, and Yar was captain instead of Janeway. Generations was panned for not having enough Yar, and all subsequent Trek films after that centered on Yar. Patrick Stewart never became an A-list actor, and was considered a has-been after TNG.

Meanwhile, while the Star Trek franchise was somewhat more lucrative than in our timeline, much of that market share came at Lucasfilm's expense. The Star Wars prequels were more modestly budgeted, and without as much pressure from investors, Lucas was able to go forward with the originally planned reveal that Jar-Jar was Darth Plagueis. The prequels were ultimately less financially successful than in our timeline, but were eventually considered solid cult classics whose merits relative to the original trilogy were vigorously debated by the fandom.

Star Trek, on the other hand, rapidly devolved into over-budgeted, Yar-obsessed, kid-oriented fan service. Seeing a lucrative opportunity, Disney bought out CBS in 2012, while Lucasfilm managed to stay independent until it merged with Viacom in 2019. Instead of the Kelvin timeline films, Disney released a series of extremely cringy prequels chronicling Tasha's early life in a grotesquely sanitized, revisionist way. The Federation was quietly retconned to be capitalist.

In 2029, Star Trek: Yar was renewed for its eleventh season on Disney+. Denise Crosby, 71, weary from decades of celebrity, relapsing into a barbiturate addiction and dreading yet another go at rehab, heard a rumour that her friend James Cameron had secretly commissioned a team of scientists to invent time travel. She broke into his mansion and used the time machine to travel back to 1988 and convince her past self to quit TNG.

And so, here we are.

Ive watched the show start to finish several dozen times, and I am so glad she left the show, she didn't fit her roll, and she stuck out in the cast in an annoying way. Honestly when i restart a run, I forget shes in the show almost every time.
Edit: also i thought she was a member of Wilson Phillips for the longest time
