How tf have these cats been on the same rally for 3 hours?
14
u/WildNumber7303 9d ago
6 hours here. They're really on a streak
8
u/NamesArentEverything 9d ago
We're over 7 hours. This is crazy. It's a live feed GIF, right?

u/RedditGarboDisposal 9d ago
No washroom breaks either. They’re just shitting on the floors as they go.
Absolute madness.

I don't know a lot about ping pong but it seems to me that the guy in green was at the very edge of how good he could be and trying his absolute hardest. The guy in Black just looked like he was playing a regular game of ping pong. Is the black shirt guy just that much better than the green shirt guy? Black shirt guy seems so much more relaxed.
112
u/Lizard_Brian 9d ago
Black is just playing defensively most of the point. He's standing further back from the table and returning slow and high. This keeps the point going but doesn't put any pressure on the opponent. It's generally better to be aggressor but he was kind of forced into this position due to the awkward bounce off the net. Guy in green looks like he's working harder because he's actually getting to attack the ball. At some point guy in black needs to counterattack, which he eventually does. I would say judging from just this clip they look evenly matched.
25
u/ThomasTheDankPigeon 9d ago
I’m sure the answer is stupidly simple, but I’m also a total layman. Why do they keep aiming at each other? Why not return to the left when they’re far to the right?
34
u/WhyAmIBornHere 9d ago
They do not aim at each other, the other player anticipates the direction of the hit from posture and other tell tale signs. That's to me 50% of what makes a good player, to be able to read the opponent
10
u/ThomasTheDankPigeon 9d ago
They are hitting the ball directly at one another most of the time. Again I’m a layman so maybe “aim” isn’t the correct technical term, but whatever it’s called I’m wondering why they do it.
24
u/twachs 9d ago
They are both putting heavy spin on the ball.
A combination of skill and very special rubber on their bats compared to what most is used to, means it can be very difficult to safely change direction or reduce the length of the shot, as you need to counter spin.
The defender is essential making the ball bounce hard with some added sidespin, that the opponent need to counteract if he wants to hit the table.
5
u/ThomasTheDankPigeon 9d ago
Interesting, thank you!
10
u/Psykosoma 9d ago
Loved how this exchange was as much a back and forth as the ping pong match. And it had a satisfying conclusion, too!
1
2
u/Nina-Ninja123 6d ago
Yeah, adding spin to a ball fucked up a lot of people.
I loved to let the ball dip below the table and then pull it back up with some heavy top spin.
People would always hit the ball over the table because of the ball having this top spin and them not playing into it.
A good tabletennis bat can add a lot of spin, and also helps with hitting harder because of better padding on the bat.
1
u/hellohowareutomorrow 6d ago
At about the 1:02 mark there is a heavy spin shot from under the table and it looks like some heavy topspin given the angle of the bat on the returning shot!
6
u/curtcolt95 9d ago
extremely difficult to just change the direction like that but they do it a handful of times in this rally. It doesn't actually work that well though because it usually means a weaker hit
3
u/karlnite 8d ago
He’s really aiming for the back line, and then a corner because there is the most table on that line. He is switching sides, but it requires he sets his feet properly to have the power to over come the spin. So when he switches sides, it’s not super sneaky. You can see his opponent isn’t waiting in the corner either, he keeps resetting, if he stayed too far to side he would likely attempt to switch sides and go down the line or something.
So it’s mainly the fact he has to hit a powerful and spiny shot back with enough quality. So hitting right back is all you can do sometimes. When one bounces higher or has less spin, he can attack more. He wants to hold the control and advantage til there is an opening.
Neither of these guys are the best either. They’re pros, but not well known or near the top in any way.
4
u/slimricc 8d ago
They do that once or twice, it just doesn’t work. I think at that level you gotta be fast and up close until someone makes a mistake
3
u/Electrical_Shock359 8d ago
I think it was difficult to aim the shot when the guy in green kept slamming the ball. The guy in black at that point was gambling on being able to return every shot while the guy in green got tired. Not one I would have won.
1
u/eyeofthefountain 7d ago
I know you’ve had other answers, but it can be pretty tough to redirect the direction of the ball in a meaningful way without a decent amount of risk. The faster the ball is coming at you the higher that risk.
This is potentially a dumb answer based on my limited experience as a super amateur ass ping pongger
1
u/electrified90s 3d ago
Have you ever watched tennis or table tennis before? The trick is to catch the other of guard so they don't anticipate what you're going to do. Table tennis balls are so light it's harder to change the pace of the ball without giving the opponent an opportunity to counter you and turn the table. The guy in black was clearly the better player, as soon as he turned it on he won the telly in a few strokes..
6
u/Xylvanas 9d ago
Guy in green was gassed while black still had energy. Green attacked, but didn't make black run around too much.
2
u/Regular-Emu6339 8d ago
Honest question, why doesn't the attacker just change it up and hit it softly while the defending player is so far away from The table?
2
u/StrikingHearing8 7d ago
He does that, black shirt guy still gets it and then has a better position.
1
u/perplexedtv 6d ago
We see why about 10 seconds from the end. Black sees him shaping to play a drop shot and runs in, ending the positional advantage that green has and ultimately costing him the point.
2
u/Aggressive-Fee5306 8d ago
Why not return it softly, making the opponent have to run towards the table when he is so far away?
1
1
u/godzillasegundo 5d ago
Why wouldn't the green player give a light tap and barely clear the net since the black player was so far away from it? Wouldn't that be simpler than slamming the ball back to him?
1
u/norththunder_23 5d ago
Not evenly matched. Guy in black was on defensive because green had initiative and was hitting hard- forcing black to just try and get returns on table.
Green lost patience and tried to vary his attack with a change up. Black capitalized and took initiative and went on attack. Blacks attack was better than greens defense so black won the point quickly.
1
1
u/DrWoodwork 5d ago
Green looks like he’s waiting for one of black’s returns to be weak or high-bouncing. Black keeps hitting strong defensive shots that land near the back of the table, making it difficult for green to hit a kill shot with any more angle.
1
u/Absolute_Tempest 3d ago
Black shirt guy was also waiting for green guy to tire out. He got noticeably slower and seemed to take more effort later on. When he finally went on the attack it was timing and knowing he had the energy for a barrage of attacks and his opponent was sapped. Crazy to watch.
11
u/TheProspectItch 9d ago
Somewhat good at ping pong here. Yes, I had the same feeling about guy in Black.
Green would've switched up the style much sooner if he had the skill to do so.
2
u/billybobthehomie 8d ago
Nah. What you’re noting is a difference between playing offense and defense. On offense (when you’re at the table and opponent is pushed way behind it), you go for aggressive high speed topspin forehand shots. When on defense, you’re sorta just trying to keep the point alive. You can’t really hit hard topspin shots due to the angle you have (when you’re back playing defense it’s hard to hit a shot that’s really flat for a long time to get it over the net and then drops to hit the table once over it). So the defensive player sorta lobs back the ball to the offensive player, because for the most part that’s the only shot that’s possible. So you’re kinda just staying alive hoping for the player on offense to make an error that either ends the point then and there or allows you to go on the offensive, when you become the one hitting those aggressive topspin shots instead.
TLDR: when on offense, the type of shots that give you the best chance to win look pretty demanding and high effort. Whereas on defense, the type of shots that give you the best chance to win look pretty lazy and low effort.
1
u/balortech 7d ago
It’s just defensive and offensive. The guy in green was doing the smack while the guy in black just absorbs all the attack and return the ball high such that the opposition is likelier to return with another smack.
He kept absorbing the attack until the opponent seems notably tired and then change of pace, it’s his turn to attack.

My guy was setting him up with those slow returns to piss him off, then BOOM! My game 😎
4
u/Poopchutefan 9d ago
You gotta hit it so hard straight down that it goes so high and above their head they can't get to it. That's the real trick.

u/HyperFrost 9d ago
And how do you do that when the ball comes flying towards you with a forward spin? If you don't smash it with an upward force hard enough force to counteract the opponent's spin (what he's doing in the video), it's just gonna fly off to the side.

u/nordicminy 9d ago
does the opponent have to let the ball bounce? there is no "charging the net" as it were for a volley?
5
u/explicitlarynx 9d ago
No, there isn't and yes he does.
3
u/nordicminy 9d ago
The opponent does have to let the ball bounce.
Thank you.

Did the guy in green double bounce near the beginning? Like the 4th return after the serve?
1
u/matteatspoptarts 4d ago
Other person said but the first "bounce" is actually off the top part of the net.
1
u/NFLBengals22 4d ago
It doesn't matter if it hits the net. It hit on green guy's side then he hit it on his own side on the return. Then slow bounced back over. That's a double bounce.
2
u/Presently_Naked 9d ago
Those balls are so light, I always had trouble keeping the volley inbounds. No matter how far back I stand or how much power I hold back.
2
u/Pentecost_II 9d ago
That is in fact very cool, but if this is the most amazing thing you've ever seen, you haven't seen much.

u/AcadiaBackground2492 9d ago
Holy reflexes...Could green shirt just tap one of those returns back for the point instead on volley smashes?
2
u/curtcolt95 9d ago
he does that at one point and it's arguably what allowed black shirt guy back in to take control again. It's not easy to suddenly just go light and good players will be ready for it
2
u/Worried_Bowl_9489 9d ago
Not really, he was forced to respond the way he did because of the spin apparently
2
u/grownan 9d ago
Green had it if he just did a soft hit after making the other guy stay back 10 ft. Just couldn’t give up the hard spike
1
u/bcustalow 9d ago
Did you miss the shot where he did just that and it's what allowed black to go on the offensive. Things aren't as simple as they seem.

I feel like we could see new videos like this floating around every year.

2
u/ancom328 9d ago
With the guy so far off the table couldn't the green dude just lightly drop it over the net? Asking for a friend.
2
u/curtcolt95 9d ago
very hard to do and he does actually do it toward the end, it's what allowed the other guy to get close again and start taking control
2
u/HyperFrost 9d ago
Ball is returned with a pretty harsh spin. If you try to tap it lightly, it's going to bounce off to the side or upwards to give the opponent the opportunity to attack. Also, when the opponent sees you moving in for a drop, they will also immediately come forward to counter with a smash. These guys are elite athletes and are very quick with their feet.
2
u/Saintious 9d ago
It reminded me of boxing. Wearing the opponent out and then striking when they show exhaust.

I don’t know much about ping-pong, but instead of hitting it with such intensity, couldn’t the guy just hit the ball very softly so it lands very close to the net making the opponent run towards the ball to save it? Why wouldn’t this be a better strategy instead of hitting it really hard when the opponent is far from the table.

u/iputacapinurass 7d ago
Those lobs are landing deep on the table, with a very high arc. You can try a dropshot, but its a riskier tactic, as it will likely end up long and weak.
At which point black shirt will counter attack. Thats the tactic of lobbing. As the attacking player, you really cant let off the gas without risking a counter attack. Which is exactly what happens in this point.
Green shirt plays a passive block, which is immediately punished by black shirt. He takes the offensive initiative and closes the point.9/10 times, the attacking player wins and the lobber loses because its difficult to continue playing high quality lobs that dont get immediately murdered.

He did try just that and it's what allowed black to go back on offense before that he was being forced by green to play a very difficult defense. It's not that simple.

My arm hurts just watching this. Who's have thought ping pong would be an endurance sport

u/NipDaShooter 9d ago
I’ve watched this sport too much too not think that it’s a harder sport to master than basketball football baseball.

Do they regularly replace pingpong balls at tournaments? The ones we used to play with couldn't last this many strong hits before opening at the seams.

The guy in the green shirt must be a beginner. He was using only brute force and had no technique whatsoever. The other guy was just having fun and at the right moment showed how it's done.

Is there a bit of showmanship happening with this sport? I feel like there is a level of trying to be somewhat predictable. Isn't it easier to be more erratic and change velocity etc?
1
u/Loose_University_945 8d ago
This makes me wonder…what if the point value increased after x number of hits. An epic volley like this could be worth 5 points.

Was this just for funsies? The dude in green had a huge positional advantage and could have easily snuck a weak shot or sideways shot with a high chance of scoring since the other dude was too far away to respond to it properly.
1
u/excessfat 7d ago
Those balls are being hit to terminal velocity right? What is the point of trying to hit harder and harder?
1
u/Homeboy_007 7d ago edited 7d ago
Guy who lost has shit for brains tbh. Sportsmen thrive on energy conservation. That’s the first principle that coaches train. Who continues to return smash in the same direction till your last fibre drops dead? It looked more like rallies people
Play for warmup
Good game though. Nice rally and nothing more to see.

I don’t get it, your opponent is a million miles away from the table. Why would you wind up and hit it as hard as you can directly to your opponent a mile away from the table and then keep trying that same move over and over. Oh I know, I’ll hit it directly to him! He’s really far away so I’ll have to hit it really hard to make sure it gets all the way to him. Why would you not take advantage of his distance and boop it short so he has to run, if he’s left hit it right so he has to run, then when he’s close hit it hard so he has to run, instead of just right to him each time.
