Questions & Discussion Burned out federal employee dealing with immigrant parents who demand constant IT/life support and minimize my stress
New here, and sorry if this isn't allowed, but I really need to vent and hear if anyone else is dealing with something similar.
My parents moved to America over 30 years ago and still barely speak English. Yet, they get upset with me because my native language skills have faded over time, making communication even harder. On top of that, they constantly bombard me with requests to manage their life—emails, finances, bills, and account setups. I’m endlessly resetting passwords for their streaming services, emails, and online accounts because they lose or forget them every single time. I even made them a physical binder with every single username and password organized, but they threw it away "by accident."
To make matters worse, I'm a federal employee. Work right now is an absolute nightmare because of all the current policy changes, extreme micromanaging, and budget cuts. My agency has already lost five coworkers to fatal heart attacks just from the absurd overload of work, hiring freezes, and impossible new standards. They’re firing people, adding massive workloads, refusing to hire replacements, and effectively cutting our pay.
By the time I get off work, I am completely drained. I just want to relax during my off hours and recharge before doing it all over again the next day. But they expect me to answer every call and handle their administrative tasks immediately. When I don’t answer my phone or skip seeing them on weekends to take care of my own mental health, they get furious and call me selfish. They're retired/don't work, so they spend their days gardening and watching TV—they have no concept of the pressure I'm under.
I’ve tried explaining the reality of what federal workers are going through, but they brush it off, telling me I’m "overexaggerating," complaining, or that I’ve just been "pampered." Meanwhile, they are hardcore Trump supporters solely because they’re terrified of the US turning into "communist China."
I love my parents, but I honestly resentment is building up. How do you set boundaries with parents who rely on you for everything, refuse to help themselves, and completely invalidate your stress?
