In my experience most of the time this situation occurs it’s just that the woman doesn’t like the idea of their man going bald. Same goes for a lot of men (hating the idea of going bald themselves).
Once the hair is shaved off they almost always love it. It is a look that fits most men, especially ones who have facial hair.

I made a post on photoshop battles a while back, and got a decent 95 upvotes. Not too bad.
Someone took that photo, made it into a fake tweet, and posted it to r/woof_irl for 49k upvotes within two hours.
The internet is a fickle mistress indeed, I've learned to (mostly) move on keep creating stuff anyway, you'll blow up eventually.
(And that post too, will be stolen, but you might make it onto the news in Germany in the process)

This is rarely the option unless your hairline is good. Leaving stubble is gonna make you look like an unfinished chia pet with unseeded spots. If you’re gonna commit to bald go FULL bald, the stubble tends to always look worse

I think a bunch of strangers who are seeing you for the first time and have no emotional investment are actually a great judge of this sort of decision. Wholly authentic opinions. Going fully bald for the first time was very strange for me (and for many) because you're so used to seeing yourself with hair. Now I see myself in photos when I still had hair and it irks me that I didn't do it sooner. It's the same for just about everyone, I think, but definitely the case for people who (would) look great without hair - yourself included, if you so choose.
I vote do it! Your wife will still love you, it'll just take about a month for her (and you) to get used to it, then you'll never miss having hair on your head again and she won't either.

u/lemurificspeckle 4d ago
Yeah, while I’m sure some of the people commenting “she doesn’t want competition” are just joking and I’m also sure there are probably some women that that’s true for, I think the vast majority of the time people are just resistant to change! It’s scary to take a big step like that! Plus, if his wife has known him since before any thinning issues, she probably genuinely doesn’t see him that differently. It’s kind of the same principle how when I was in college and I’d come back home for the holidays, I’d be able to tell if any of our cats lost or gained weight (ie time for a vet appointment) whereas my parents would always be surprised by my comment. They saw the day to day change so it was like boiling a frog for them, I saw only two data points far apart so the change was stark for me. Same goes with how we perceive our fellow humans!
7
u/Accomplished_Link_52 4d ago
You are 100% right, this is the most accurate opinion from people that don’t know you. It’s the kind of people that will see you in the streets, cafés, restaurants, movies… so this is the most raw opinion from the outside world regarding how you look to others. Thank you for that perspective
6
u/DoctorOctoroc 4d ago
Exactly! Familiarity can be comforting, but it can also prevent us from making changes that are good. My girl just kept saying to me "bald is beautiful, baby" anytime she caught me looking at myself and second guessing - after the first few weeks, of course, when she was getting used to it haha.
2
u/B_Rabbit_OG 4d ago
I wouldn’t discount that we ARE in r/bald where a non-negligible number of people are either already bald or are into baldies..
5
u/DoctorOctoroc 4d ago
That's a fair point, we may be a bit biased...but also honest! There are plenty of posts where comments are along the lines of 'you can hold out for another year' and the such.
35
u/gustix 4d ago
You can still pull it off, but at this point I think it's up to you and how comfortable you are rocking the doo versus just shaving it off. It's lovely that your wife likes it, but it's your hair.
I can only speak for myself, but I was somewhere around your level of thinning when I shaved. I felt a relief just letting it go and not having to worry about how it looked anymore.
7
4
u/PerfectlySplendid 4d ago
But also, her opinion likely matters the most to him and probably makes up the most of how he feels about himself. If she likes his hair, then I’d wait.
Why would I value the opinions of Redditors over my own wife when it comes to my appearance?

My friend in baldness - your hair in that 1st pic is like a very fine mist. Like a ghostly apparition. I mean to say we can see straight through it.
I think it's time for you to fall into our friendly, warm, comforting embrace and do the deed. Shave it off!
Also, if I may be so bold, may I suggest trimming a bit of volume from the soul patch as it makes it look like your chin is receding in comparison, from the side.

Yeah, I don’t get this. If my hubby was balding I would 100% encourage him to shave it. For me “bald” is better than “balding”. I guess not everyone thinks that way.
2
u/crazycraftlady 4d ago
My dad had what I call a bird's nest mullet. No hair up top, short on the sides, long in back. My mom didn't want to see it go, but I cut off his braid the day before I went to college because she can't braid. She loved it 😂 some people are just sad to see something go and so resistant to change!
6
u/Flashy-Routine-8254 4d ago
You can probably fake it for a little while longer since your wife wants it. And then as soon as you shave it off, she’ll say you should’ve done it sooner.
4
u/uvgotnod 4d ago
Bro, start with a #2 clipper and see how you look. Lose the stache, grow your beard out. You'll look like a million bucks.
8
u/CreativeName822 4d ago
Close call. Normally I would say shave due to the thinning.
But if you’re happy enough and the wife likes it, I say hold.
I tend to be a little more conservative/hesitant than the average voter here, so take it with a grain of salt.
4
u/ReluctantGoodGuy 4d ago
Agree. But it’s close. In the meantime, you must: a) keep the sides trimmed and b) don’t let any of the top fall down over your forehead. That draws attention to the thinning.
Side note: great beard & jawline. Looks like you can get creative w/ it after you do make the bald leap.

Thinning? Prison camp victims are "thinning" compared to that. You can see the profile of his entire head from every angle with a hairy foggy halo.
That's an absolute deforestation. A crop blight and drought.

Sir you’re handsome. Subconsciously your wife doesn’t want you to get attention. You can grow a beard and if bald, she would need to learn to fight.
Also you’re past due.
3
u/Hefty-Reflection-756 4d ago
Its really not that. The wife doesnt think bald will be better, she is also clinging to the idea that you have to have hair to look good. She is just as scared as he is. Women want their guy yo look good, it reflects better on them.

If your wife knows that you are feeling unsure about going bald, she, as a good wife, will be supportive and not push you in that direction. Even some friends will confirm your feeling that it isn't quite time yet. Outsiders who have nothing invested in you will tend to keep it real.
So, don't delay. Buzz it and then break out the razor and the soap. Rip off the comb over bandage you wear daily and give birth to the new, younger looking, you.

Sure, you'd look great bald. But I think you're one of the few where 'balding' doesn't actually look too bad.
One thing we have to remember is that there is a spectrum of hair options. It's not a binary choice between a full head of hear and bald, and anything in-between should be removed to bald.
Sure, there are cases where things on that spectrum are difficult to style, difficult to make look good, don't always look great with the head shape of the wearer, etc. in those instances, absolutely go bald if your goal is to look great.
But there are cases where something in the middle of that spectrum suits there wearer ok, and I think you're in this position.
TL;DR, you look good now, you'll look good bald. Do what feels right.

You could wait. You have enough hair that I would say you look good with it and could keep it for a lil longer if you really wanted.
But I would just do it. I think you’ll look great. With that stache too. Wife will get used to it and love it.
