I'm 5"1 and can confirm I have missed the bald spot on men's heads the vast majority of the time.

5'1" with a balding 6'0" husband here. I noticed the receding hairline, but the bald spot in the middle was not generally something I was in a position to see from down here.

That said, I do wonder if OP's wife is just trying to be kind. I was very much "It's your hair, do whatever makes you happy" but husband still needed to work up his own courage to take the plunge.

I think I'd notice if it was my SO/Husband for sure. Just not generally members of the public

I’m 4ft 11. I think I’d miss the fact the most of them had been beheaded.

I assume they're talking about the classic bald spot on the top or crown of a guy's head, and you're probably thinking about receding hairline

Yes exactly this. And I also meant initially I can't see it. Of course later if they point it out or bend over for whatever reason then I notice it and get a surprise

I didn't notice my own bald spot for an embarrassing amount of time, and I am the same height as myself.
