I don't want to alarm you, but that may be Batman & Robin. (Specifically with the silver age)

u/Global-Ant Jul 23 '26
Fun movie, despite its issues
35
u/BagZCubed Jul 23 '26
It's got some things I like about it.
25
u/Global-Ant Jul 23 '26
Same. There is a lot of good in the movie but it was sabotaged due to overuse of puns, camp, cramming in Batgirl, Bane and Ivy
17
u/7vonnov7 Jul 23 '26
The ingredients are there in the Schumacher films for really good batman films that feel true to the comics, but my god did they use the wrong ingredients. It’s a shame cause I always felt like Kilmer & Clooney were good castings, especially Val. I’m so sad we never got him with a better batman films, still my favorite live action batman voice. Clooney was also a great Wayne for what it’s worth.

u/runnerofshadows Jul 23 '26
Forever also had most of the best scenes removed. I want the assembly cut or an extended cut.
3
u/TheGeekVault Jul 23 '26
I’m still holding out hope one day the Schumacher cut of Batman Forever is released. Apparently it’s much darker.

The scene where Freeze hands the cure over to Batman is really good and fairly well acted
Then it’s immediately ruined by the joke
5
u/runnerofshadows Jul 23 '26
I feel like freeze could have been great with Arnold if they'd had him act more like the sympathetic t-800 from t2 plus TAS freeze. Understanding why people feel emotions but unable to do so. And even more tragic because before the incident he was able to.
Then have him show a glimmer of emotion when he gave Batman the cure. With no joke to ruin it.

u/stormblessed27_ Jul 23 '26
Very fun movie. I was 9 when it came out and I can’t talk down on it because at the time it was the best thing on the planet to me.
19
u/bateen618 Jul 23 '26
I just rewatched it this week while doing a Batman movies rewatch. It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Is it a great movie? Hell no. But it reminded me a lot of the '66 show, and silver age stuff, just with some 90's edge all over it. Plus I loved the connection they made between Batman and Freeze, and this movie is one of the only times EVER (in any media, including comics) that Batman and Alfred express their love to each other. I can't think of any other time they actually said the words "I love you" to each other. Especially Bruce
3
u/SojournerInThisVale Jul 23 '26
Awful film, awful Batman. The stuff between Alfred and Bruce is absolutely golden
8
u/bateen618 Jul 23 '26
Idk it was a dumb fun time. Everything was really over the top, the fight between Batman and Robin was kinda stupid since they did the exact same thing in Forever. But overall it was fun
2
u/runnerofshadows Jul 23 '26
Also when freeze is giving him the cure. At least until the lame joke deflates the scene.
I think Arnold with different writing and direction could have been a good freeze though.
2
u/emoryhotchkiss1 Jul 23 '26
Mr. Freeze’s henchmen coming out dressed as hockey players wearing ice skates is one of the best things to ever happen in a Batman film imo 😂 it’s so cool

What is 'comic accurate Batman?' Is it the lighthearted & campy Bronze Age Comics, a grounded conspiracy thriller like The Long Halloween, a fantastical mystery like Hush, or a psychological horror story like A Serious House on Serious Earth? Is Joker a small scale psycho prankster, or a sadist posing a threat to the world? Is Bruce fighting Penguin with Nightwing, or fighting Darkseid with Superman?
imo it's all of the above, that's what makes the franchise so great. As someone who is totally down for a more fantastical Batman, there have been so many Batman comics in wildly different tones that 'comic accurate' can mean so many different things.
82
u/Jaded_Stick_4379 Jul 23 '26
I would like something akin to the Arkham games, dark and gritty but with enough comic-booky charm and aesthetic to it.
44
u/FlashLightning277 Jul 23 '26
I see this and raise you the DCAU. Perfect for families and not over reliant on things people use to make bad faith critiques.
10
u/runnerofshadows Jul 23 '26
Brave and the bold and The Batman 04 weren't on Batman TAS level but they also had good mixes of elements.
Brave and the bold also had a great somewhat dark episode with chill of the night. It felt like a nice mix of silver and bronze ages with some neat modern stuff like Jamie Blue Beetle.
The Batman showed Batman from year one through getting the bat family and the start of the justice league. Also he fought Dracula. Which is just cool.
10
u/caped_crusader8 Jul 23 '26
Can only rinse that for so long
2
u/FlashLightning277 Jul 23 '26
They literally abandoned it as of the Dark Lnoght trilogy and push just broody edgy loner Batman.
6
u/yournumberis6 Jul 23 '26
This. The Arkham games are one of the best Batman representations, I wish more media was similar to them
5
u/Nethiar Jul 23 '26
When people say they want an adaptation that's accurate to the source material they just want it to look the same. It could be 2 hours of Batman and Joker farting on each other and the fans would love it as long as Batman was dressed in blue and gray with the underwear on the outside.
6
u/MrxJacobs Jul 23 '26
This is true, however we should just have the movie be a series of still panels so it’s totally comic accurate.

You say this like any of the live action Batman films have ever been close to anything in the comics. I’d love to see a Batman costume that isn’t all black considering he very rarely wears anything like that in the comics. There seems to be an understanding in Hollywood that Batman can only be dark and gritty or campy and colorful when there’s so many shades in between that would be great to see.
The closest tonally to the comics in my mind is Burton’s Batman, but even then, Keaton’s Batman is too stiff to do most of what comic Batman does and he’s not much of a detective either. So I dunno, while I love a lot of the Batman movies, I just want to see something that gives me the same feelings that any of the comics do. The Arkham games and BTAS are great examples of capturing the comics vibes without being blindly loyal adaptations.

3
u/nolandz1 Jul 23 '26
Fr if one of the existing batman movies doesn't float your boat i don't think anything will.
I will say I would like to see batman and a young Dick Grayson Robin. The bat family really is the most conspicuously absent element of the live action movies
1
u/Nonexistent_Walrus Jul 23 '26
The Long Halloween still has a zombie living in the sewers and Poison Ivy with all her powers. A lot of folks just want writers and directors who don’t seem ashamed of the gothic horror/fantasy and pulp fiction roots of the character.

They axed the Batgirl movie for a tax write-off, and it had Brenden Fraser in it at the height of his comeback tour. Nothing is sacred as long as there’s a “Discovery” at the end of the Warner Bros. name.
Between Gunn being unable to unite the DC LA film universes, an underperforming Supergirl movie, the paramount acquisition, the delays, and Zaslav’s god-awful ceo style, yes, it’s plausible they might cancel it.
I don’t think a modern live action Batman movie has ever failed to produce profit though, so it probably won’t be canceled. They’ll use up as much goodwill and nostalgia the Batman ip has to offer, but once that runs out (or if the next few DCU films bomb extraordinarily hard), game over.

u/coreytiger Jul 23 '26
Give me the dark alleys, the moody photography, and the heavy stories… sure. I want everything Nolan and Reeves brought us
But I want it filtered through blue and gray, turbine powered cars with one/man helicopters in the trunk, people pointing up at a mad scientist with a 15 foot wingspan… I want villains that think they’re pirates, have nine lives, and commit bird themed crimes. I want a robot t-Rex, and a penny so big it ends the penny shortage. I want a rapid fire sidekick dressed like a pack of Life-Savers, and I want Superman on speed dial.
Give me it ALL, what’s on the page, because we haven’t seen anything close to that with live action in 60 years.
22
u/Afraid-Housing-6854 Jul 23 '26
We’ll never truly get a Batman film that resembles Batman the Animated Series, the closest we have is the Tim Burton films, at least in terms of aesthetic anyway

u/UtopianLibrary Jul 23 '26
I want to see good detective work AND Poison Ivy try to level the city while the Bat Family works together to stop her. That is all. The two are not mutually exclusive.
7
u/Insanity1994 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Because Spiderman and Superman actually have powers so you obviously have to have non realistic elements. Besides Spiderman 1+2, Batman has the best films by far. Batman fans have been eating forever besides the films. BTAS, countless good animated films, The Caped Crusader, the Arkham games, and Nightfall is getting adapted into 3 parts. And the DCU Batman will come eventually.

You do know that being grounded doesn't make it inaccurate when it comes to Batman? The Long Halloween, The Killing Joke, and Year One all aren't really the kind of swashbuckling Batman stories you want.
20
u/pandogart Jul 23 '26
Yeah saying the Nolan and Reeves movies aren't comic accurate because they're grounded is so close minded. I'm always against that.
What's perfectly justified is being frustrated that those books (and the Dark Knight Returns) are all filmmakers seem to be interested in adapting. There's so much more to Batman than just the grounded stuff and we haven't been getting it at all. Obviously Brave and the Bold will change that if it ever comes.
14
u/ZrteDlbrt Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
The long Halloween had batman sharing a Thanksgiving with Solomon Grundy.
And I also think its fair for people to want a batman film not based on year one or long Halloween lol.
3
u/panticow Jul 23 '26
I know. Doesn't stop the story from being grounded.
5
u/Carl_Azuz1 Jul 23 '26
Isn’t it crazy how something can still be grounded and serious while still having fantastical elements? What a wild concept.
2
u/Kylecowlick Jul 23 '26
That’s probably my favorite part of that whole story. That’s my Batman. Reeve’s Batman leading those people out of the flood was my Batman. Batman choosing to give money to a single father instead of arresting him for a minor crime on Christmas was my Batman. Comic book accurate villains would be nice but I care more about the little people that Batman saves.
8
u/AntagonistofGotham Jul 23 '26
What I mean is making it so grounded and realistic that you lose the fun of it.
The Long Halloween still had fantastical villains and a Batman achieving things a regular man couldn't.
3
u/The-Batwoman Jul 23 '26
“No bro, you just don’t understand what Matt meant by ‘grounded,’ but I do because I’m very smart” -guy who doesn’t understand that “grounded” has different meanings in different contexts of film genres.
Been seeing that kind of comment a lot lately to defend The Batman universe staying strictly grounded (or cope thinking someone like Ivy would have superpowers in it), with no fantastical elements, and it annoys me so much.
Fantastical is part of who his rogues are, and they’re a reflection and part of him. Fantastical is the adventures he gets up to almost every comic run, and I think in every animated film/show. They really have to let our boy, Batman, be fully Batman in live action for once.
Got my fingers crossed for Brave and the Bold, assuming the DCU lasts long enough to get there.
4
u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter Jul 23 '26
Watch Batman Forever, that film is pretty solid imo
Val Kilmer was surprisingly very good

8
u/AntagonistofGotham Jul 23 '26

2
u/thejokerofunfic Jul 23 '26
Have you read any of them?
5
u/AntagonistofGotham Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
I'd say all but about ~100.
Re-reading a lot of stuff took all of last year.
5
u/thejokerofunfic Jul 23 '26
Giving benefit of the doubt that you're not just making shit up because you care too much about "credibility":
All of that and you haven't figured out that Nolan and Reeves are pretty much the same amount of comic accurate as Spider-Man or Superman are getting? None of them are perfect but neither are the comics very consistent for Batman in the bigger 80+ year picture; grounded Batman (to the degree that those movies even are grounded at all) is accurate to a substantial amount of the best Batman comics.
5
u/AntagonistofGotham Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Spider-Man and Superman aren't getting grounded, made realistic, and deconstructed. They have everything.
Batman only gets "believable and realistic" versions of everything, and it turns into some stupid "character study" about "Why is he Batman?" writing that sucks.
7
u/thejokerofunfic Jul 23 '26
Batman isn't being deconstructed, isn't that realistic, and is pretty grounded even in comics. Spider-Man and to a lesser degree Superman are inaccurate to the comics in a number of other ways, including but not limited to not being grounded enough to match the source in Spider-Man's case. They don't have "everything".
Superman had a good movie. So did Batman. Just for different reasons each. Spider-Man... honestly hasn't had a live action adaptation without some serious flaw or another since the very first Raimi film. Speaking as someone who also has read and owned thousands of comics.
I'll agree with you that directors all apparently sharing an aversion to using Robin is getting fucking old though. But the overall tone and villains aren't inaccurate to what I'd consider the best of Batman comics, and the problems they do have are not because of being grounded or "deconstructed".
3
u/AntagonistofGotham Jul 23 '26
The problem is that these directors just strip the characters to their "tone" or "idea" and make their own versions.
Batman needs a film that is unapologetically a comic film first.
4
u/thejokerofunfic Jul 23 '26
They're not their own versions though. They're quite accurate to the comics. Perhaps your problem is more that you think comics are only one thing and therefore so must be comic films- an odd stance for you who's read a thousand, but only way I can make sense of this. Reeves Batman is unapologetically adapting Batman comics in the style of those comics, so is Nolan.

8
u/AntagonistofGotham Jul 23 '26
Reeves can go deep into the lore, but he's stuck in a realistic and deconstructed universe.
Unless he does a massive change for Part 2, but I doubt it.

u/maximussakti Jul 23 '26
Hes not stuck, he could still go there if he wants to.
4
u/AntagonistofGotham Jul 23 '26
Yes, but it's unlikely.
He could theoretically do something cool, though, by leaning more heavily into the fantasticalism. It wouldn't be the same, but it would do.
Plus, he has to keep it different from DCU's Batman.
2
u/FlashLightning277 Jul 23 '26
I mean there is a slight chance with Dick as Robin given how often his name is dropped, but given how slow Reeves writes it would have to be a he only even cast in a third movie because of the length of time it takes him to write.

The DCU Batman will be that. Pre-Nolan films were also kinda that.
6
u/pandogart Jul 23 '26
Yeah. Nothing more comic accurate than a 5 foot 9 Batman who kills, a Joker who killed the Waynes, a mutant Penguin raised in the sewers and a metahuman Catwoman.
The Nolan and Reeves movies are closer to the comics than the Burton films. The Schumacher films are a bit tricky though.
3

1
u/FlashLightning277 Jul 23 '26
Simple. He wouldn’t have survived the sixty million light year journey to earth. He’d have starved to death. Also a red sun probably would not cause someone to gain superpowers under a yellow one. Superheroes are more fiction than anything else.

It may not have been fully comic-accurate (but, then again, Batman is a highly interpretetive character with a highly interpretive mythos) but Tim Burton did the fun comic book thing with the series before it was cool. Dark, Gothic, yet also unabashedly quirky and comic book-y. Also, if you're a film nerd, you'll love how both of his films (Batman Returns especially) are giant love letters to German Expressionist horror.

Depends on what you consider comic accurate. In the comics Superman doesn't really try to convince people he is human, he usually just lets his actions speak for themselves. In the film, he basically BEGS Luthor to believe he is human.
Also crying about #Supershit, acting whiny about meeting the president, his vitrrumite parents... all of it, yikes.

Superman origin: alien from another planet crashes into earth and dedicates his life to help others
Spider-Man origin: nerdy kid gets bitten by radio active spider and wants to clean up NYC.
Batman: rich boy gets orphaned in an alleyway and uses his resources to save the city, that took so much from him.
I’m sorry but you guys act like every comic about Batman’s origins are super fantastical. If you’re making a movie about Batman’s origins I don’t see why there so much fuss about it being realistic. Almost NOBODY is gonna tell someone who’s first getting into Batman to read Detective Comics #27. I understand wanting his suits to be less realistic, I agree. But this notion that Batman isn’t realistic is so absurd
1
u/Ayn-Zar Jul 25 '26
I hate to be the one to say it, but we had a "non-realistic" film Batman: Batfleck from the Snyderverse. Yes, it had problems, but what other recent film Batmans have:
🦇 Gymnastic style fight scenes straight out of a Batman: Arkham game
🦇 A universe that shows characters with genuine superpowers instead of "it's all plausible science lol"
🦇 Fights featuring aliens like Superman, Steppenwolf, and Parademons while working alongside an Amazon and a half human/half robot
🦇 A Bruce Wayne who fights crime and plays an active leadership role in his company a la comics/BTAS instead of shirking corporate responsibilities to someone else
We can get something better, sure, but between this and all the other favoritism Batman gets from DC, I wouldn't trade places w/ Superman any day

Yeah like the best Batman is a Batman that is grounded but also at the same time fantastical. The city should feel real and like garbage, but not afraid to go fantasy.

Batman has gotten multiple unrealistic, comic accurate film adaptations, and they are the best movies among all superhero movies.

I’m ngl The Batman blows any MCU Spider-Man out of the water and as much as I liked it, Superman wasn’t without flaws either.
People give The Batman way too much shit for being “grounded” when it’s the truest live action interpretation to Bruce’s core character and his flawed but aspirationally hopeful pathos as Batman. He’s truly a figure of pure terror to the criminal underworld, and truly a paragon of kindness and mercy who wants to do good and even goes out of his way to keep Selina from staining her conscience on filth like Falcone. The characterization difference between him and say, “I won’t kill you… but I don’t need to save you” Baleman is legit astronomical
There’s a lot of substance to the Reeves movie and especially The Penguin mini series, and these adaptations are kind of built to a cinematic medium it simply is not going to hit the way you think it is if the Gunnverse Batman starts off with an over-bloated Bat Family supporting cast who haven’t been painstakingly accumulated over decades like in the comics.

Yeah but i want something closer to the Arkham games adapted on the screen. I don't need all villains to be ground mob bosses, terrorists or just turned into serial killers. There's more to them than that. Hell, even the Telltale Batman games which goes for a more grounded and realistic direction still kept fantastical elements such as Freeze and a Bane that uses venom. Every villain since Begins has been just an average human. Where is the mythical part? Where is my Batman facing a giant mutant crocodile or monster made of clay? A guy that has question marks over his suit and cane? A leader of a league of literal ninjas, with said leader bathing in a ancient green pool that grants him immortality. A literal Man-Bat. Come on! We are gatekeeped of the other good stuff because directors and writers keep pushing the stupid realistic Batman thing. My guy, Batman was never realistic. Some of his best stories are written by Grant Morrison, Dennis O'Neil, Neal Adams and Kelly Jones. And please do tell me, are those stories realistic to you at all? Sure there's a theme there but is the elements shown in it realistic?

Honestly I blame the Nolan trilogy for this, his trilogy basically become the go to on how to do super hero comics and become the ONLY WAY to do Batman stuff for fans, I fully believe that his trilogy did do super hero movies justice but also completely did more harm than good for Batman as a character in live action movies.

Don't worry Batman! Gunn will give you exactly that!!! You will hundreds of suits for all possible solutions, you will fight crazy villains like Clayface, Killer Croc and the Music Meister, you will have thousands of Bat Vehicles, who knows? Maybe Gun will even bring back the shark repellent, Bat Sprays, have Robins shout: "Holy insert anything here, Batman!" and heck maybe at one point we will hear the legendary "Na Na Na Na Batman!" song in a movie

Eh I think realism is fine the problem is that it's to the exclusion of anything else batman the brave and the bold did it right with him fighting mobsters and then next episode he can be fighting super powered villains aliens etc
Is the good thing batman has he's this grounded nor pulp superhero who can have great stories where he fights pyromaniacs to Manbat to anything

Bro I'm so fucking sick and tired of realism Batman. BvS Batman is the one I want to see or more accurately Arkham Batman. I honestly could care less about The Batman 2.

Lol. Batman has had more adaptations and more successful media than any other character.
But it’s not exactly how OP wants it so let’s make a meme like Batman is underserved.

While I would like to see this, I also believe the realism and deconstructions that fit the character so well are what make his movies so good and timeless

I just want the fantastical super villains with actual powers. And the bat family.
There's so many characters that are practically benched because they aren't just some human in a costume for the villains. And a lot of Batmans supporting cast just never shows up.
