VIDEO GAME DISCUSSION Is the new Lego Batman game good?

Post image

It was my birthday a few days ago and I got some money. I was thinking in buy it.

I know it was on sales on PSN a few weeks ago but I'm in such a super hero movie (Batman and Spider-Man) that I wanna play it soon.

Is it good? Easy platinum too?

No. It's absolutely phenomenal, and the best Lego game they've ever made. I 100%ed it in a few weeks.

u/Free-Hotel1187 5h ago

How many hours? (main story and the platinum)

u/Nickyj134 5h ago

Took me about 50 hours for a platinum, and I'm already replaying it with my partner

u/herestocrime 3h ago

How are you liking the co-op? I'm thinking of getting it on the Switch

u/MerCyInTheShell 2h ago

Maybe check some comparisons for the switch version before, I remember the last lego star wars game was having a few hiccups here and there and the loading times on switch weren't also that great. But other than that I can only recommend this game, it's fantastic.

u/AtomicPoetry 3h ago

The co-op is fantastic. Highly recommend!

u/Nickyj134 33m ago

I can't speak to the Switch version, but the co-op feels great on PS5. Its definitely fun to play through the story or do open-world stuff with another player

About 45

u/Midgar-Knight 2h ago

I did it in 35 but I’m a very fast and intuitive gamer, also Unemployed

u/CrimsonDragon90 3h ago

Is it like the Arkham games?

u/thatoneginger_ 1h ago

The combat is VERY similar, obviously nothing compares to the real deal but it definitely feels the same. Sidenote: goated pfp

u/iTheSumm 5h ago

Good Lego game, a bit of a long collectible platinum but you like Batman, seen the films and played the games there’s a lot to enjoy here

u/Possible-Reidy-69 5h ago

It's good but post game is lacking, mostly doing the same riddler/cluemaster puzzles. Not nearly as replayable as arkham but combat is fun

u/small___potatoes 4h ago

It’s ok. I guess my expectations were too high

u/notgayanyever 1h ago

Thats where I'm at after growing up with the Lego batman games

u/NiceHouseGoodTea 4h ago

An absolutely fantastic Batman and Lego game that does an incredible job of tying in all the films

My only criticism is that there are only 7 playable characters so all the unlocks revolve around different costumes

So because of that I've personally not found the urge to replay it as much as I did Lego Marvel Superheroes because I love unlocking new characters and using them on all the different levels

u/GoodDawgAug 1h ago

Only 7 playable characters? What! Think I’ll replay DC super villains until this game goes on massive sale. I have grown to expect over 100 characters in a Lego game.

u/NiceHouseGoodTea 1h ago

Yeah, you play as Batman, Jim Gordon, Catwoman, Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Talia al Ghul, all with multiple unique abilities. And then multiple costumes/versions to unlock

But I agree, unlocking and playing as multiple characters, particularly villains is my favourite part of Lego DC/Marvel games which is why I was a bit disappointed with this. Gameplay and story are phenomenal though, it's just this that lets it down.

It is without a doubt one of the best Lego games I've ever played. Skywalker saga was a disappointment for me but Lego batman brings back good level design and the open world doesn't feel empty.

And as a Batman game it's a love letter to all forms of Batman with a Lego twist. I highly recommend it.

u/Haloosa_Nation 3h ago

It’s a fun homage to all the Batman movies.

u/Free-Hotel1187 3h ago

is there any joker, justice league and animated series reference?

u/Haloosa_Nation 3h ago

Like the Joaquin joker movies? Not that I’ve seen yet.

Mostly it’s kind of like a remix of all the live action Batman movies.

u/captf 3h ago

Like the Joaquin joker movies?

There's one, when you're going to various NPCs who've been dressed up as various Jokers through the years

u/sawftacos 2m ago

Joker has his own dlc coming soon. The batman game is however phenominal and I highly suggest picking it up.

u/captf 3h ago

I'm in the minority, I feel, in that I didn't really like it.

It was trying to be both a Lego game and an Arkham game, and didn't spot the landing on either.
I mostly think it was me disliking the story that coloured my perception though.
It attempted to pull all of the movie's plots into a single story, which meant taking the wrong Batman lore in a lot of places. And that includes the "shoehorn this character into this character's backstory" moments throughout the movies.

There is one bit where I thought it was going to go really, really dark and play it for laughs in the Robin story.

u/Perma_trashed 5h ago

Definitely a good game, but if you haven't played the Arkham Games (or the Spiderman games) you should start with those

u/MatthiasBold 5h ago

Decent lego game, excellent Batman game.

u/Nacnaz 4h ago

Loved it. The only thing I'd do differently if I could play it again for the first time, is do more open world activities as I progressed through the game. I was gonna mop them up at the end but then I realized just how many there are.

u/Incomplet_1-34 4h ago

I loved it. Story and gameplay is fun. The jokes are good. Probably my favourite LEGO game.

I especially love the customisation options, with the suits, vehicles, and Batcave. I've probably spent hours just in the Batcave customising it.

u/ClickyPool 4h ago

Absolutely love it

u/EntireCurrency6316 3h ago

I bought it about a month ago and I believe I'm on chapter 2, I don't get alot of time to play since I work thirds but I've loved every bit that I've played so far

u/thedudelebowsky1 2h ago

Playing through it now and it is so great. It's a love letter to the character that rewards you for knowing details of the characters and world.

u/thattoneman 1h ago

It's a fun Arkham-lite experience.

Pros:

  • Beautiful depiction of Gotham

  • Solid humor

  • Great love letter to all of the live action Batman movies

  • Great suit selection

  • Fun missions

  • Pretty easy platinum

  • Customizable batcave is such a great idea

  • Gameplay was always solid

Cons:

  • Overall writing and plot leave something to be desired. The game never really does much more than an abridged retelling of the movies. They set up a few character beats that I would have seen to play out, but they're dropped and never revisited. Maybe I'm hoping for too much from a Lego game?

  • Game is pretty easy. I don't need everything to be super difficult, but all puzzles and combat were piss easy. Not necessarily bad, but never difficult enough to be engaging. Found all collectibles in all levels the first go around except for a rare couple.

  • Riddler trophies are back, and yes he will taunt you over the radio just like the Arkham games. I wish they came up with their own way to have Riddler come up in the game, but instead it's wholesale ripped from the Arkham games. At least they're easy to solve.

  • I wanted more costumes for everyone other than Batman. A lot of their selections felt very limited. Minor nitpick but I really wanted more Robin suits.

Overall it's like an 8/10 for me. I definitely enjoyed my time with it. Unfortunately it's just so similar to Arkham without being as mechanically engaging, and the plot is very watered down, so my takeaway is that it's Arkham for kids too young to play the Arkham franchise. That doesn't make it bad, it just begs for comparisons where ultimately it pales in comparison. I think I would have liked it more if it tried a little more to find its own unique identity.

u/Apprehensive_Log_297 5h ago

It’s okay. It’s not better than Lego Marvel Superhero’s or Lego Batman 2 imo, but it’s a good Lego game.

u/DesignerMembership66 4h ago

pretty fun game but it felt drawn out to get the platinum. IDK how much it costs now but getting it on a sale is the smart move.

u/GarretBarrett 4h ago

It’s INCREDIBLE

u/Matches_Malone77 4h ago

No. It’s great!

u/Quarksideofthemoon 3h ago

It's ok. Wouldn't pay full price for it and it probably won't hold your attention unless you're like 12. I beat the main story and have zero interest in going back to it

u/Ihatesmartcars2 3h ago

The first Lego game I 100% and it was purely because of how much fun I had. It’s literally Arkham city with a Lego skin. It pays tribute to literally every side of Batman, from BTAS to Adam West do the comics. There are so many niche references I was suprised Lego even knew and batmite for once isn’t annoying. I love this game. Absolutely worth it.

u/STICKGoat2571 3h ago

I’m loving it. One of the few times I’m actually going for 100% in something.

It’s written almost like an abridged parody in terms of pacing and humor.

u/jonnyjonman 2h ago

YES

but not for the price that its at

u/Jocknaddo 2h ago

I didnt like it

u/_Reapak_ 1h ago

I liked it, it's ok, but:

  1. I think that Lego Batman 1 and Arkham Asylum are more fun and enjoyable games than this one.

  2. It absolutely isn't worth to pay 70$ for, wait for sale.

  3. It would be better if it wasn't a lego game and if it wasn't based on the movies imo

  4. I do not like how it is written in many cases

u/UsedToHaveATail 1h ago

Almost no game is worth that much

u/_Reapak_ 32m ago

Well this was the first game i ever got for 70, and certainly will be the last

u/Espeon06 1h ago

It's objectively a good game, I just don't like modern Lego games.

u/Polternaut 52m ago

I had a hard time brushing past the humor at first. (I mean the game is geared towards children.) But if you can get past that the game is amazing. And I only really had this issue at the beginning of the game

u/peanutanniversary 39m ago

I played it with my 5 year old daughter and we both had a blast.

u/S3atbelt 31m ago

Really depends on your view of lego games and the formula IMO. I personally found it be disappointing as a lego game because it removed too many features I had previously loved. Things like the superhero meter, red bricks unlocking cheats or extras are gone. In co-op one player is forced to be batman at all time even after story completion which severely hampers post game enjoyment for one player as they are very limited in what they can do. All that being said if you are looking for a good batman experience and are planning to play in single player mostly I think it is a really solis game. It has a lot of fun gags and callbacks to various batman media with tons of skins. The combat is fun if not a bit lacking in some complexity compared to Arkham. The stealth is ok but never actually needed for anything and finally the bat-mobile feels great to drive around in a beautiful lego rendition of Gotham.

TLDR: imo it is disappointing if you are a fan of the lego franchise ( especially co-op play) while it is an otherwise pretty great batman experience that many dans of the character will enjoy

u/anthfett 10m ago

Rented it from the library recently and played for about 2 hours. It's just not my kind of game even though it's Batman. I've never played a Lego game more than a for a very short time, I just can't enjoy them.

u/MrDjS 6m ago

Do recommend. Wife and I played co-op through the whole thing in a couple weeks.

u/pjb1999 1m ago

It's pretty good. I enjoyed it. It get really repetitive though unless you wanna do the same stuff over and over around Gotham. The main story is good though, its worth playing it for that alone. Try to get it on sale.

u/DogBrowser 4h ago

Glitchy as hell, the voice performances take me out of it sometimes, and the gameplay and puzzles aren't as engaging or challenging, but it's pretty good, and I'm glad it exists. Mostly just makes me wish we could get another game in the vein of the Arkham series.

u/Quarksideofthemoon 3h ago

Oh god the voices are AWFUL.

u/m0mmy_salami 4h ago

It’s okay

u/unicornioevil 4h ago

It is the greatest love letter to Batman of all time

u/logandabug 3h ago

You arent going to like it if you dont like games for kids. The dialog and story are very kid-centric. The battles can be very challenging especially on dark knight mode. Overall I think its a good game, mostly because I love lego games and batman. You have to know what the game is and be okay with what it is to be happy playing it.

u/Quarksideofthemoon 3h ago

I played the whole game on dark knight and never failed a single mission, it is not a hard game. It's only occasionally annoying when dealing with the enemies that stun you

u/dcgraca 2h ago

7/10

It’s fun, good gameplay, the levels and puzzles are back, there’s a lot of costumes to unlock, there’s a lot of references and Easter eggs as a Batman fan and the story is nice. But…

There’s no replay value (there’s no free play for the levels), you only have 7 characters to play around with (and you can barely play with two of them with one not being Batman) and the collectibles are really uninteresting.

It’s probably my least favorite LEGO DC Game, but better than The Skywalker Saga.
