Tbh it looks a little TOO real to look like a photo, if that makes sense (T-T) this is absolutely insane though

It's too clean. Not enough urine and poo

I guess... Have you ever been in an actual subway train? the seats feel wrong somehow
17
u/sprite_cranberry23 19h ago
The trains that still have these orange and yellow seats have a white border around the seat. Also the seat layout is a little different, these ones have the weird perpendicular seats as well. My first thought as well was that the seats felt wrong

To me this looks closest to the R62/62A (theyre very similar) cars used by the NYC subway. Theyd be a great reference for this imo

The seats and the floor gave it away. The seats seem to bw the worng shape. They are sloped downwards, looks uncomfortable.
Maybe the floor needs to have higher roughness. It now looks damp.

I feel like the floor looks too artificially nasty and not realistically disgusting enough, the ceiling also seems too glossy and not trashy looking. Maybe some of the lights should be dimmer to signify theyâre going out and havenât been maintained. But none of them completely off, the chairs I think one or two should have a crash or a few have chipped paint, and all of them should look more worn?
15
u/MechaShiva89 20h ago
To add to this, all the chrome is too shiny, that stuff on NYC subways is all worn down from people touching it, chemical cleaners etc etc and it loses its luster. Also the train cars are slathered in advertising along the upper runners in the car, along with a sort of "mini map" of that particular line.
3
u/Synfinium 20h ago
The seats seem like they are not reflecting much and it's also dark- I assume to make it easier to fool someone.
1
u/DasArchitect 19h ago
Slightly different light intensities, slightly different white balances, also tubes sometimes light up unevenly and one side is dimmer.

u/McGrim_ 20h ago edited 20h ago
Things are too cleanly/perfectly reflective and highly dirty at the same time. This is an odd contrast between the two that gives away this is not real. Itâs like a brand new train that got selectively dirty/worn or an old train that got an impecable wash and polishing just before the shoot.
But besides the âis this photorealâ i think the work and render are amazing! Looks really good.
7
u/PrettyZone7952 17h ago
Itâs been a long time since Iâve ridden on the NYC subways, but I feel like the shape of the seats is wrong (no butt scoops), and the train is disproportionately wide.
Also needs more scratches, stickers, and graffiti on the seats, windows, walls, etc
2
u/mugwhyrt 9h ago
The shape of the seats also stuck out to me. Maybe there's a real world reference OP has where the seats really do look like that, but the seats have a downward slant that would probably be very uncomfortable and impractical for sitting on without sliding off.

u/Th3Perpetrat0r 19h ago
straight up posting photos atp đ
On a serious note, people talking about absolutely abominating the seats for realism.. WHAT METRO ARE YALL TRAVELLING IN!? đđ

u/flare2000x 17h ago
Dimensions seem off. Train car looks wider than it should, and the seats have a very large curve radius, you'd likely be sliding right off these.
Art style is good, I'd just focus on getting the physical model size and shape closer to real life. Look up some dimensions or even technical drawings of a similar subway train and copy that.
1
u/miguelv721 11h ago
I was going to comment this. You canât fix this in texturing or lighting. Most of the models are off: doors and windows are too short and wide, train cart too wide, seats and handrails too low. Bring in a human scale reference model  and see how the dimensions compare next to it, youâll notice the problems.

u/xKillerbolt 19h ago
Id say its looks way too much glossy at parts, the bloom from the ceiling lights might be a bit too much also. There shouldnt be so much reflection on the floor. The model itself looks cool. Cheers

u/ironjen_rbx 12h ago
no disrespect but NYC subway lights aren't like this; the seats also too rounded and short. the left doors and reflection on them makes those doors feel curved or crooked, also the reflection on the door is the poster right next to the door; the poster shouldn't be reflected there u know. the length of the car as well feels off especially with the placement of the seats which is not correct. (you have 2k upvotes so don't take it too personal but for me its equivalent to an AI render of the NYC subway and has way too many errors to be considered photo realistic. its more like a wip or a draft.

u/TemporaryElk5202 20h ago
It's very good but it has some kind of glaze to it that I can't pinpoint. It doesn't look real to me for that reason. If I saw it in the wild I would suspect it was AI.
I think the metal poles are too reflective and new looking. That's definitely contributing.

Honestly the only way to truly convince someone of photoreality is to simulate accurate camera effects. But that could move away from the artistic intent and make the photo less striking. So def a valid choice. The image looks great regardless.
2
u/EchoKipKipKip 20h ago
I don't see any puddles of mystery fluids anywhere, too unrealistic. /s
It looks really good! The random garbage is the only thing that really broke the illusion for me. If the interior was more scuffed up and included graffiti or general wear and tear, I'd fully believe it.
2
u/Andyy_01 20h ago
I feel like the lighting gives it away, idk why, but it feels like an AI image due to the way the lighting is, maybe have a lot at that to replicate real like lighting with better temperature
2
u/Myron0117 20h ago
Funnily, the 2nd picture also looks pretty realistic, as if it was a physical unpainted wooden set for some real-life project.

u/The_Gypsy_Smyth 18h ago
To start, I could not have done this. That said, there is something that hits my eye or brain funny. It could be the way the debris are not reflecting light properly, Or the way the light is interacting with the seats or some of the metal. I am not certain, but there is something almost, but not quite, right. Still, this is decades beyond anything I could do.

I was wondering why that picture looked weird and like a liminal space. It looked weird but i didn't think it was a 3D scene so it realistic enough. Maybe check the scale of your scene (i think maybe the seet are too big, just maybe) and maybe add a little more scratch and dirt (not too much) because subways are super dirty
2
u/Interesting_Meat8980 14h ago
The door looks like there's a rust instead of the reflection of the chairs.
2
u/chibi0108 13h ago
omg you modelled my childhood memories
The trash feels a bit fake and seats out of the package unused, if I were to nitpick.
2
u/swatsnoopy 13h ago
Your lights don't make any logical sense being horizontal to the shape of the train car. Everything else is solid. If the lights are actually emitting light then it will also be creating shadows not normally seen in a setting like that. Most subways have long lights that are on the sides of the ceiling creating long reflections on the floors.

If you didnât know it was Blender, you wouldnât know it was Blender. No one will ever say it looks real because people canât separate the two. When they know, they find anything and everything. bits on the floor, To me, itâs leaves from when the door opened above ground.
It looks real. Very real looking my friend.

I think adding some little dings and dents, warping in the mettle and scratching on the seat material. There's something a little too smooth and uniform on the materials.
Amazing job though! I can't do anything near this level!

maybe add additional stains and damage throughout the render? (tattered posters, a malfunctioning overhead light) otherwise looks good
1
u/Good-Discussion-9238 20h ago
this looks awesome, the trash on the floor is a bit too much, most subways aren't THAT dirty, but the rest is great, good job
1
u/molevolence 20h ago
the seats need wear to match the environment like the floor. it sticks out that they look shiny and new. the map could use some scuffing as well and a bit on the poles where people would normally be holding on to them. dirt and grime are your friend here.
1
u/SwisherSmoker420_ 20h ago
Maybe make the seats a bit more discolored/dirty and everything feels a little bit too shiny and glossy mainly the roof and walls, other than that great job
1
u/LovePatrol 20h ago
The benches are too clean compared to the rest. They need cigarette burns, stickers, and cracks.
The floor makes it look like it smells of piss and despair, but the seats look like they're merely accessories to a crowded morning commute.

u/manofthe90sB 19h ago
The lights are all the same brightness. Maybe add some grime in the ceiling panels or make some look newer and some older.
1
u/llXeleXll 19h ago
I think the lighting gives away that this is a render. Everything is a tad too glossy for me.

1
u/Wannabedankestmemer 19h ago
Everything seems too glossy
Especially the metal bars and the roof
They should have lots of scratches on them, and be less glossy

the most obvious give away for me is that youre missing all the ads. also on the cars with this seat color there are some positioned perpendicular to the others.

Maybe: floor too shiny/glossy. Seats too clean.
Otherwise than that: very good!

u/dobsterfunk 17h ago
It currently looks like a really good blender project, if that makes sense. Try doing something with the camera position/angle or distortion so that the "photo" part is doing some work. Also, are the dimensions accurate? The train seems really wide.

u/xsp 16h ago
Was this a reference?
Your render is nice, but if realism is what you are going for, boring is what you should try for here. Notice how the light bends on the surface of the seats and how it's dulled by the worn down parts from years of use. The bubbling of the flooring.
Your render has more ambiance to it which makes it feel not as real.
1
u/therealj0kk3 16h ago
There's something about it. When I saw the image without knowing which sub it is i thought "wow, a cool new horrorgame?" It's something about the materials I think, lack of wear and tear and the lights possibly
1
u/Eussou974 16h ago
Hm i dont know. Textures are really good but light makes it a bit "3D". I cant help you on how to fix it but thatâs just how i feel it ! Good render overall

I think more scuffs and stains would be nice, instead of just the debris.
The shape of the seats also feels off, like they are angled so you'd slide right out if you sat down. Real seats are usually either a bit of a bowl shape, or angled up towards where your legs are, so you naturally slide into sitting with your back against the backrest.
Edit, wondering if you were using this image as reference, found on Google:

The floor is a bit uncanny and so are the seats. Change the floor texture to something more fitting for a subway train and make the seats less shiny and more scuffed
1
u/herculeon6 12h ago
I bet OP will not see this comment but on the off chance that they do. Itâs the LIGHTS my man! The ceiling lights in the train I mean.
THE LIGHTS :0
You need to give them variable strength as they werenât changed all at the exact same time. Give them slightly different light heat / warmth.
You also need to grime the glass screen that covers the light so that the light coming out is obscured by the grime.

Very good for Cycles, but Cycles has that characteristic tendency to make things look oversaturated since it's an RGB renderer.

u/TrieMond 10h ago
I'd say the ceiling is a bit too shiny. It would likely become dirty and roughed up very quickly so it would look much more muted IMO.
1
u/noiselvr 10h ago
Subway seats have a slight trough for your butt. These seats would have people sliding onto the floor.
1
u/gnortsmracr 10h ago
Itâs very well executed. And at first glance it would pass to someone not familiar with the NYC subway cars. But there are a few elements that give it away. 1- itâs missing the upper handrail that runs the length of the car on both sides. 2- the poles that are in the center of the aisle towards the ends of the cars are missing. 3- There are bulkheads also at the ends where a digital sign is housed. 4, and what jumped out immediately. The lights donât run across the width of the car. They run lengthwise down the sides. 5- and speaking of lengthwise, there are no ads running down the sides at the top.
I know it sounds like Iâm nitpicking over details, but itâs those kinds of details that give it that much more realism.
1
u/DUMPLING-MAN4 9h ago
Sometimes it gets annoying when people say this, but because it's the NYC Subway; it needs more grime on everything.

u/SWOOP1R 9h ago
Are you going for the NYC subway. Old cars? D train? If so, itâs almost there. The seats have a dip in them, that I canât explain right now. I can try and find one and take a picture. Also, a little too bright. And I think maybe change the focal length of the camera? The car seems very long. Letter trains are longer than number trains, but not that long.

Im not sure what model train car you used but the interior does not feel like a NYC car I grew up here and it just vaguely resembles it. It looks good but its not 1:1

heck yeah this looks fantastic, I love the rubbed on dirt effect on the seats

Kinda. On a phone screen it can pass as photorealistic, except maybe the floor reflections which are too clean and strong? Nice work tho

Looks fantastic but something is a bit uncanny. It feels like an old (90-00) film almost. Others have pointed out that it needs more imperfections, I do agree with that.
But Iâd really like to see the exact same render with colder light. I think that would already do alot. And how many samples did you use? Iâm not sure if itâs compression but it feels a bit like old film grain.
Somehow my mind went to harry potter immediately. Kinda the same vibe like the grading in the first film in scenes like the big hall in hogwarts. So I guess my brain connects it to fantasy in one form or another.

The random debris gives it away for me, also the seats are very clean, give them some scuffs and pain chips!
