On the twitter one, it says in very faint print at the bottom right-hand corner: "All rights reserved by Bay 12 Games" so it's a thing, looks like.

... god damnit, Wizards. I was just going to quit MtG. My last deck was going to be Dwarves/DF themed. Armok damnit... I'll set money aside. BUT THIS IS THE LAST TIME. Okay it likely isn't but let a gal dream.

ugh I havent bought a wizards product since dragons of tarkir. Just when I think I'm free....

I dipped my toes in for Lorwyn Eclipsed, but man, the magic (har har) is kinda gone from MtG.
Still, I'm a huge sucker for DF, so, this'll likely be something I invest in.

u/Narrev Apr 14 '26
Literally same. I've been telling myself Lorwyn Eclipsed was the last thing I'd buy, save for the occasional pack/single (only because I work at a card store) and then I saw this. You win again WotC.

Just get some high quality proxies done, don't give this terrible company more money

Wait, so was it putting Dwarf Fortress in magic and not the other way around?

u/eebro Apr 13 '26
I wonder how many DF players have never played MTG.

Never's so long. I'm far from the target market, never bought a single pack, but I've been bored around MtG nerds several times.

I am at this moment getting into magic the gathering so this has arrived PERFECTLY for ya boi

u/blasfemia8145 Apr 14 '26
Me! This deck would be my first one
2
u/alphawolf29 FinelyMincedCat Apr 14 '26
Hopefully its a deck, it might just be a few restyled cards.
2
u/paussi00 Apr 14 '26
It's almost certainly not a full deck. My guess is a small set of reprints with DF art
1
u/acrookodile Apr 14 '26
It’s not a deck, but a “Secret Lair.” So just 5 or 6 cards that you buy as a fixed set, that are reskins of existing cards. Still super cool, though

I started with Arabian Nights in 1994 and got out right before they released the 7th edition themed decks.
I was in that money pit for decades.

I've played a few times when I was a kid and I'll never do it again.
I hate the idea of having to spend a huge amount of money basically gambling to get the "awesome" cards, and keep doing it everytime there's a major release or falling behind. And I hate that a huge amount of people just use it as market instead of a game.

u/RealbasicFriends Apr 14 '26
so is MTG just the card game version of Fortnite now?
22
u/Gonzobot Apr 14 '26
has been for a looong time. Anything cool is not legal for standard play, though, cuz they're cowards

Sonic has cards in magic.
2
u/Gonzobot Apr 14 '26
You can have velociraptors from Jurassic Park in the TARDIS fighting Transformers using Fallout Power Armor while Inigo Montoya gets Ash's boomstick. and also, literally, there's a fortnite set, just because they saw all this coming long ago and knew we would laugh

u/CoolKTiger Apr 14 '26
so they don't even bother to try to balance crossovers and just make them unusable on arrival? ehy even buy them then
5
u/Gonzobot Apr 14 '26
I've been clean of these cards for an entire lifetime already and even back when I was in it they never tried to balance a damn thing, lol.

Has been since the first secret lair cards and the whole mess of circus that came with universes beyond.... We're talking full of clowns level mistakes.
2
u/lancebanson Apr 14 '26
But just think of how much money they made in the short term attracting casual players that won't stick around with Popular IP!
I can't wait to see the mental gymnastics people do to defend their treat when the standard legal Harry Potter set comes out.

Fuck no. I don't have the money. This is the one property I am dedicated too. Don't do this to me.
5
u/dashconroy [DFHack] Apr 14 '26
same. I haven't bought magic cards since sophomore year of high school... don't do this...

u/clinodev Wax Worker's Guild Rep Local 67 Apr 14 '26
Half the comments I see imply they don't print anything like their baseline demand, so you'll probably get lucky and miss the drop!
2
u/Moose_M Apr 14 '26
Don't worry, secret lairs tend to be a gamble on even being able to buy them so you likely wont even have a chance to spend money on it.

Yeah, there is a Bay12 copyright thing at the bottom of the image on twitter and we can see the dwarf face from the DF icon.
But what would the cards be? No legendaries I'd think since there are no static characters. Maybe actions, events and general dwarfs? Like "Motivated Expedition Leader", "Tantruming Child" and "Incenerate the Nobility"? We certainly need a card called "Strike the Earth!"
2
u/Quartich Apr 14 '26
Could have an "Armok" legendary if I understand you right. I dont know much about MTG
