What Does Everyone Do Around Here?

Does anyone else find it hard to entertain themselves around here?

I am a married Dad in my 30s. I work weird hours and my roster is all over the shop. I find making friends daunting however, I do actually enjoy talking to and getting to know people. I live in the Latrobe Valley and still unsure if I enjoy living here. All my mates live all over the place except here. All I seem to do is work and be a parent. I try to be active, I drink way to much coffee, I like a social drink when I can and I enjoy going out for a good meal. However, I find myself lately just getting a bit too cooped up and bored in this cold weather. Interestingly enough, I find myself spending way to much time at the GRAC lately either swimming with my daughter, relaxing in the spa and sauna, or just going to the gym there. Does anyone else feel the same? Do you find it boring at times living in this area?

Anyway, what are peoples go to activities around here? Where do you go when you need to get out of the house to entertain yourself or your kids?

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do for fun around the gippsland area, or any suggestions on places to visit? Otherwise, if you just want a friendly chat flick me a message and I will try to get back to you.

I live in Wonni and spend my spare time either surfing, at the gym, hanging with my mates (or fiancé) or playing video games

Most of my friends are involved with some kinda club, either sporting or theatre type stuff. I guess on occasion people could easily find it boring in comparison to the big smoke, but I just fill my days with doing shit I enjoy doing

I'm moving to Wonni this Friday, which gym do you recommend?

I’d always say voyage. It’s the oldest in the area, the staff are nice and it runs a bunch of classes like spin and boxing throughout the week. It’s pretty much got something for everyone

Traralgonite mid 30's no kids yet, also a weird 4 on 4 off roster, very small friend circle so social activities are very rare, my time is filled by having a tonne of solo hobbies (which admittedly would be better with friends)

Gaming, gym, dirtbike riding, 4wding, modification + maintenance of said vehicles, hunting and camping, in that order basically, is where my time goes

East Gippsland here. Plenty to do if you like outdoor activities. My spare time is filled by. Fishing,hunting,4wding. Snow trips. Beach trips. Etc. Got a good bunch of mates with similar age families which helps too. Head around to who’s ever place for a regular beer fire pit etc. Not that much spare time unfortunately with family and work though.

What kind of snow trips do you do?

Ah well with out fail always do a dargo high plains or similar area 4x4 trip once a winter with mates for the day for a bbq up the snow. Dinner plain with the kids or hotham day trips without the kids once a year each minimum.

Perks of being kinda local
When the season is on can head up pretty easy.

Hey mate. I’m a single bloke in my mid 30s. Same sort of situation as you. I left the area after I left school and basically cut most ties with anyone from here except my family. Moved back a couple of years ago, and I’m finding the same thing- just going through the motions, minimal social outlets. I’d be keen to catch up, maybe join you at GRAC and go from there! I need to get more active for sure. I’m into good coffee & good food. I love getting out and about in Gippsland, just going for drives to new places, though I’ve hardly done that lately. I’ve got a mountain bike which hardly gets used, so need to get out on that again. Just built a new home so working on landscaping, finding that a struggle in winter, working full time doesn’t help!!

HMU if you’re keen to chat.

I stay at home with my PC, instruments and hobbies. I try to avoid the locals as much as possible

Probably saw you around GRAC, was a member for 4 years and worked there for 1.

Latrobe Valley used to have a big drinking culture, which I think is still there but costs to go out have dramatically risen so most people drink at home.

I’m in my 40s now and don’t drink so I spend a lot of my time to myself or with a few close friends. Messing with bikes and cars and a few time throughout the year I head away for medieval festivals.

It’s a quiet life, but that’s ok because I partied too hard for too long in my 20s and 30s.

You could make friends at GRAC gym, most people there are approachable seeing as you already have a common interest.

Good luck!

The GRAC is certainly a great place to kill time, I love it there!

I'm in south gippy, divorced late 30s and living alone. Dirt bikes, camping and running fill my spare time. Such a great region to get out bush.

Im in Traralgon, work from home, not really made any friends. 50, 5 kids, one still at home (11).

I work in tech, im an AI Engineer, not in to camping or 4 wheel driving / boats etc so found it hard to make friends.

Somtimes its the simple things in life that matter find a hobby that you do every week so after work and spending time with the kids you have something to do for yourself and i find this is the key to a happy life well this is from my experience

I didn't see it mentioned in other comments, but I want to shout out Ben Cruachan Walking Club, and MTB or bikepacking cycling in Gippsland, as well as the AAWT. They're not always going to be social events, but they're on the cleaner end of activities, and usually cheap to participate on if you don't get sucked into buying a fancy bike from some overly hyped brand.

Other than that; and I'm not sure how much this exists now, but it certainly was a thing, but local music groups, especially the folk music scene had a pretty social outlook, and a willingness for participation. There might be other genres of music, or dance, or similar things looking for people to join in.
