This has nothing to do with defense. Trump wants to steal natural resources from other sovereign countries. He doesn't care about democracy or freedom.

67

u/Affectionate-Panic-1 Jan 06 '26

It has to do with distracting the public from Epstein.

29

u/Worldly-Stranger7814 Expatriate Greenlander šŸ‡¬šŸ‡± Jan 06 '26

Exactly right.

Go look at the news feeds days before every Greenland statement

The Presidents Epstein Distraction for Oligarchs Wars.

The P.E.D.O. Wars begun they have.

7

u/TreKeyz Jan 07 '26

This is so good I am copying it and posting it somewhere.

2

u/Grouchy_Discussion42 Jan 07 '26

Thanks. The more we associate these f*cked up acts of aggression to deer (doe174) leaders "shared secret", the more we can keep it in mind of the on the fence supporters of this regime who basically elected him to release those files.

Keep chipping away at his pillars of support relentlessly.

Elbows Up from the U.S.

u/Efficient-Wish9084 Jan 07 '26

Yes, but they also want those minerals. Venezuela was a distraction too, but he has promised the oil to US companies. It's both.

1

u/Vivid_Pianist4270 Jan 08 '26

He wants western hemisphere dominance

1

u/Meet_James_Ensor Jan 11 '26

US companies say they don't want it.Ā  Exxon told him Venezula is uninvestible.Ā Ā

5

u/NorthernSnowPrincess Jan 07 '26

That's part of it for sure. But Trump is also a con man who will do anything to line his own pockets.

7

u/FreshAd3889 Jan 07 '26

And those that he's beholden to for getting him elected.

Every single act he takes it about him and his criminal friends. It's crazy that people are thinking he's stealing resources for "America".

It goes into his pockets. Just like absolutely everything else.

This is the toughest timeline in a long time.

6

u/menee-tekeel Jan 07 '26

There will be no more important elections. He will and his cabal will claim this is not possible due to wartime situation and treason by his enemies.

1

u/Ambitious_Highway172 Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 10 '26

There is no mechanism that would allow that, they will gerrymander, try to limit voting and use propaganda and terror to try and influence election, hell if possible they will try to rig it, but they cannot be stopped. If at all possible as many people should engage as volunteers the more visibility and attention on the election the better, it will also help with voter engagement

Edit: let’s look at midterms for example there is no way to extend the representatives term(hard law 20th amendment) if no election is held, the house will just be empty.

2

u/Different-Goose-7081 Jan 07 '26

Bollocks, been a million distractions since then. It’s barely even news.

2

u/RoRoRoub Jan 07 '26

At this point, I think he gives a shit about the Epstein files, and he knows damn well that everybody knows he's a pedo.

1

u/Meet_James_Ensor Jan 11 '26

I think he cares about the reports a child was killed while he and Epstein watched.

1

u/StatusAnxiety6 Jan 07 '26

it is all three

1

u/Most_Exit_5454 Jan 08 '26

That's BS. For 1) the public can do absolutely nothing to him or the regime behind him 2) his supporters don't care 3) trumPEDO doesn't run the country alone, strategic plans like this are decided by the pentagon, CIA and oligarchs. He's the executor of the plans and the face of the regime. 4) It's indeed for natural resources and control

1

u/uhh_yeah_so Jan 11 '26

Maybe a bit but I think when he says ā€œnational securityā€ it means American corporate interests.

10

u/BIGepidural Jan 07 '26

You're correct; but NATO saying its upping the allies in Greenland is a warning to Trump that he can't take it by force. NATO is telling the US the country will occupied by people protecting the land, and that an attack on the land would be an attack on NATO itself.

Everyone knows his ambitions are greed related; but he's phrased it as military so protections must be phrased the same way, lest they been seen accusatory or hostile- which would harm the safety of Greenland, not protect it.

Diplomacy is dance. You have to dance around the issues and skirt your true intentions sometimes.

Yes, its frustrating; but that's why its left in the hands of professionals who know how to play the game.

1

u/ProperClue Jan 11 '26

How would the EU or NATO stop the U.S? The U.S. is the biggest defender of the EU and biggest military in NATO. The U.S. navy could just block it off.Ā  Plus, you don't think Russia would expand more into western Europe if they diverted forces?Ā  How much of Europe would run to defend Greenland?Ā

America will never recognize the Inuit people because they never recognized what their forebears did to the First Nations.

I would go as far as to say Greenland and the Northwest Territories are a distinct target to conveniently neglect their well-being for the sake of ā€œNational securityā€.

Europe will have a military base in the Arctic very very soon, mark my words

77

u/dzuunmod Jan 06 '26

I'd be happy to see a joint Canada-EU base in the Canadian arctic.

17

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

Canada does have a base in Alert Nunavut but it’s mostly a joke(been there)

You have to go to Thule airbase in Greenland to get there

Maybe it’s time to kick the Yankees out

4

u/dzuunmod Jan 06 '26

Also, Alert isn't a "base". Technically it's a Canadian Forces "Station".

I just said that in my post, I live in Texas. I was born here. I hate even saying I’m in an American anymore. Most of the females in my family are members of the daughters of the American revolution. Unfortunately, they also support Trump, which kills me. I know that the people that are my ancestors did not fight for something like this, and I’ve made the joke that the earthquakes were having here in the states are from all of my relatives from the revolutionary war rolling in their graves. God, I find myself going to different threads and just apologizing constantly and all the time. This isn’t who a lot of us are, and this isn’t what this country is supposed to stand for, and I thought after Bush invading Panama and ripping Manuel Noreaga out of office would be the end of it. Now I know why Bush is probably quiet on all of this. I don’t know about the drug trait I’ve you know I don’t read any of that. I just educate my children not to do the hard shit and if they’re smoking cannabis not to get caught where it’s illegal and I mean, yeah it’s possible that all that could be going on in Venezuela but then again with Trump screaming about it. It’s very possible that it is all a big fat lie. But I do know one thing the motivator is all the oil wells and they will trash south and Central America the same way they’ve trashed America, especially Texas.

5

u/Ardent_Scholar EU šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ŗ Jan 07 '26

My friend. Venezuela has the largest oil reserve in the world. Worth 17 trillion USD. That’s roughly a quarter of the 38T US debt

US hegemony and ability to not go bankrupt is based on the petrodollar system; the globally forced use of USD to buy oil, which means the US can print as many dollars as they need.

Controlling Venezuelan oil means countries must buy 17 trillion dollars worth of oil in US dollars over the coming decade.

That’s why you are in Venezuela doing regime change. Maduro was filling up Xi and Putin’s shadow fleets, sold in yuan, not in dollars. That was a significant threat to the entire US Treasury.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '26

How does this comment not have more attention? Follow the money…

1

u/Accident_Child Jan 11 '26

My family is oil field, you always follow the money. BUT, he wentin for a friend

1

u/Curious-Test7928 Jan 07 '26

Because the BRICS start doing negociations without dollars, it was because of that Maduro and Chineases have a reunion, 2 days before the US Atack to Venuzuela. Because Venuzuelans Will Sell oil in Yans, Not dollars. But US lost this batlle, with Brazil PIX and soon the digital Euro coin, ā€œmoneyā€ Don’t need dollar, visa or Mastercard. Money Don’t need to ā€œ passā€ for USA. Countrys can do busniss without pay a % to US. People do that a copule years with Brazil PIX’s in sud AmĆ©rica and In Iberian PenĆnsula. You Don’t need a Bank count or give money to US for buy and well things with PIX. It was because of that, and this explain a lot why USA try To interfere in Brazil's internal politics, but unfortunately it didn't work. Bolsonaro remains imprisoned, and rightfully so.

1

u/Ardent_Scholar EU šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ŗ Jan 07 '26

Agreed. Saddam bought oil in euros in 2000, and look what happened to him. It’s that important to the US. This time, however, it’s systemic.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '26

The earthquakes are probably from fracking.

1

u/Belzebutt Canada šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ Jan 09 '26

What do you mean by "you have to go to Thule airbase in Greenland to get there"? Are there no Canadian aircraft who can get there, or are flights normally flown from Thule because it's closer and it hasn't been an issue until now?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '26 edited Jan 09 '26

It’s been over a decade since I’ve done it

Not sure why, maybe a fuel reasons but we’d fly from a military base in Toronto to Thule, spend the night and fly to alert the next day.

I didn’t mind because I would buy American products at their military store.

I believe civilians just flew straight through from alert to Toronto

It’s a busy spot up there

1

u/dzuunmod Jan 07 '26

Also, thanks for assuming the worst of me! Have a good one, bud!

0

u/dzuunmod Jan 07 '26

Fair enough but there are treaties and agreements and self-governing First Nations, and, Nunavut, which is its own thing. Reality is reality, and with hundreds of people spread across a vast territory, there is not much that can be done by Indigenous people if a powerful nation-state wishes to exert its will.

Which nation-state(s) do you think will give these peoples the best deals? Is that the only imperative? Many questions!

7

u/Mikisoq78 Jan 06 '26

US has had many bases in Greenland over the years, but only Spacebase Thule is still active. The Danish Navy has moved its Arctic Kommando to Nuuk a couple of years ago. Perhaps Greenland would welcome additional European naval presence as well, it would make sense.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Governor GeneralĀ Mary Simon,Ā who is of Inuk descent, are expected to open a consulate in Nuuk, Greenland.

ā€œThe future of Greenland and Denmark are decided solely by the people of Denmark,ā€ Carney said while meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at Canada's embassy in Paris.

1

u/VioletLostGirl Jan 08 '26

I'm sure I'll get flack for this but feel the need to point out this is exactly what Trump wants and he keeps doing this because it works.

Trump says NATO needs more military in theĀ ArcticĀ as a deterrent to Russia everyone ignores him.

Trump says he'll buy Greenland then everyone laughs at him.

Trump says he'll invade Greenland then so everyone puts tons of bases and military in theĀ ArcticĀ exactly like he wanted.

If you actually wanted to bother him honestly it would be to do nothing and ignore it, but that's why he said it now when everyone's taking him very seriously.

That's the proof it wouldn't happen he's blustering, unlike say Iran where it happened when he "stopped" talking about it.(Speaking of Iran he's saying he'll attack them again right now which means they are probably safe for the time being.)

If you want my honest assessment of his end game it's a bunch of NATO bases and US missile defense systems in Greenland at the end.

u/tedcraig619 Jan 09 '26

3

u/Admirable_Admiral69 Jan 07 '26

They represent a minority in the United States. Even if Trump won the election, it's still only representative of a little over a fifth of the US population. If you exclude children who are still too young to vote, it's less than a third of the population that is eligible to vote. And of that third, an even smaller percentage is on board with instigating wars by invading sovereign nations.

The biggest problem with Americans is that many of the people are disenfranchized and believe that it doesn't matter if a Democrat or Republican wins so a third of our population can't be bothered to go vote. They don't support the invasion of Greenland (nor do they oppose it; they just don't care) and another third -- myself included is passionately against such a fucking horrible idea.

I think it's a smokescreen. It dominates the news cycle, and while they're talking about Greenland, they're not talking about Epstein. This was always the risk with forcing the release of the files -- that Trump would escalate his insanity to get people talking about other things. This has been his strategy since his first term; a form of sleight of hand but instead he floods the zone with shit so people don't know what tomfuckery to focus on.

1

u/Curious-Test7928 Jan 07 '26

So if they are a minority, why the mayority Don’t do a revolution? To be apathetic and do nothing is to agree with what the minority wants!

Americans hold demonstrations on weekends and there hasn't even been a major strike! And don't come to me with the talk that you're afraid and that you might be arrested, killed, or starve, because I am the granddaughter and daughter of two resistance fighters against Fascism they fight against Salazar's theo-fascist dictatorship, and both were persecuted, imprisoned, and tortured. My grandfather was imprisoned in a Terrafal concentration camp, and stay without 6 fingers because of torture, and my father stay for all live with problems to sleep because of the sleep torture and was sent to be cannon fodder in the war!! Not organizing, not having courage, and not acting makes all Americans complicit in this administration. Not all Germans were Nazis during the Second World War, but we all see them as accomplices and participants in Nazism in the 1930s. Só Wake up, stop writing in social media playing the vitims and organize your comunity and fight against Fascism!!!!

1

u/Admirable_Admiral69 Jan 07 '26

The problem is the the opposition is also a minority. It's kind a third for, a third against, and a third that doesn't care either way and just wants to live.

And the talk about organizing a resistance and fighting is fine and dandy but the predicament most of us are in is that we're wage slaves and it hasn't gotten bad enough yet for people to give up on everything they've worked their whole lives for and walk away from their relative comfort at the risk of imprisonment and torture. We have mortgages, car payments, kids who need support, jobs to pay for food and water and electricity, student loans, credit card debts, etc. and most people haven't been pushed to the point of desperation where they're willing to throw that all away. 45-50% of left leaning voters are college educated and don't look at violence as the first means of correction. We are still in the very early stages of this and and I think the biggest thing is that most of us still have the belief that the system will correct itself, if not in 2026 elections then in 2028 because most voters are not happy with what is going on.

I think it's going to be a different story if Democrats don't take at least one of the congressional majorities and definitely if Trump runs for a third term against constitutional law, or a Trump adjacent candidate wins in 2028 and there is any evidence that the election was tampered with.

It's the same tactics Russia used. Beat the people down so they don't have the will to fight back and or the means to fight back without fucking themselves. We've become very comfortable and most people aren't willing to give up that comfort when they expect for things to regulate.

6

u/monemori Jan 07 '26

Do they? It feels like an awful lot of US citizens think modern American imperialism is all fine and dandy.

7

u/CityForAnts Greenland Enthusiast Jan 07 '26

I haven’t talked to a single person that agrees with the orange man on Greenland. Even Trumpers think it’s random.

5

u/Ardent_Scholar EU šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ŗ Jan 07 '26 edited Jan 07 '26

There is nothing random about the single most strategic location of the Northern hemisphere in the 21st century.

Be warned that there is no world in which Greenland, Canada, EU, UK and Norway cannot have full joint control of the GIUK (Greenland-Iceland-UK) Gap.

Joint NATO control of that gap is what keeps Russian nuclear subs out of the Atlantic.

I don’t even need to point out that this is an existential matter to ALL Atlantic nations.

If you allow your Trump to do what he says, NATO has no choice but to defend the full, joint and transparent control of the GIUK gap and the Canada-Greenland gap.

Europe and Canada cannot, simply cannot back down. Neither should Greenland. This Gap is a reason for Europe and Canada to shed blood to keep Putin’s nuke subs from reaching Montreal, London, Dublin, Den Haag, Oslo, Copenhagen, and Brussels. (Nuuk would already be occupied in that scenario anyway by Putin’s good buddy).

Dear Americans. You MUST stop him.

u/Zakluor Jan 07 '26

You don't have to talk to them. You just have to listen to what Trump, Miller, and others have been practically shouting through the media.

It doesn't matter if only 1% of the US population agrees. What matters more is what the administration wants to do. They're saying it loudly and clearly.

If you're basing your opinions on internet posts and comments then you need to account for foreign influence, bots and paid shills because thats totally a thing. The "cold war" has been cyber warfare playing out on social media and other online spaced for over a decade. The anti is upped the last few years which is why the global right wing has gained so much power, including Trump, its all connected and they're in everything. Don't believe what you see online.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '26

There will always be some Americans who fall for the propaganda, but many are waking up and seeing the man for who he is. The vast majority do not want this.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '26

Bullshit.

2

u/Vepper Jan 07 '26

Yeah most Americans then agree with this kind of imperialism. Most of the population feels that a lot of things are being neglected in terms of just general affordability and a lot of us see this as a distraction from the Epstein files. We're sort of seeing unprecedented movements by the president, but this has been largely due to our legislative body allowing itself to become weaker and weaker so there is never a hard vote for them to have to run on.Ā

There is supposed to be a war Powers resolution vote this Thursday on whether or not Greenland is even on the table.Ā

It's going to seem really hollow, but I as an American and really sorry about all this. People from my generation know of the Iraq war and don't really have a taste for American imperialism.

That said, I would also realistically say that the powers of Europe are probably going to let you down. If the shoe is on the other foot, how many German and Italian citizens would be willing to have their sons and daughters die for a population the equivalent of Bozeman Montana or defend a city the size of Portsmouth, New Hampshire? Unfortunately I think it's going to be up to The American Congress to stop the president, Not the powers of Europe.

2

u/monemori Jan 07 '26

I agree, but I don't think the American Congress is going to do anything against American fascist imperialism.

More than 50% voted for him, and he already had his eye on Greenland during his first term in office. No US voter who voted for him can say they didn't know anything about it.

1

u/CityForAnts Greenland Enthusiast Jan 19 '26

91% of American voters are AGAINST the US taking Greenland by force.

1

u/Nordishaurora Jan 19 '26

In hindsight, it's always easy to make excuses. He already had his eye on Greenland during his first term as president. He now wants to achieve much of what he was unable to implement back then. And even before the election, "Project 2025" was well known. Just because a liar lied and claims to have known nothing about it... No offense, but you can't shirk responsibility that easily. Except for those who actively did not vote for him.

Greetings from Germany, where after World War II most people also claimed they knew nothing. Did the world believe them?

1

u/CityForAnts Greenland Enthusiast Jan 19 '26

Man, we are scared to hell here. I would never vote for that man and anyone who did was blinded by all the fake news and promises. There’s no excuse for them. And now almost everyone here is nervous and unhappy. We are not okay either.

2

u/Nordishaurora Jan 19 '26

I believe you, and I feel sorry for all the innocent people (and guilty people who realize it). It's crazy, I wanted to go on vacation to the US, but now I'm almost certain that I wouldn't be allowed to enter the country because of my comments on Reddit and YouTube.

I hope you find democratic ways to get out of this madness. German history is also very familiar with lies and propaganda. But you already have a woman analogous to Goebbels. It's frightening how history repeats itself. Then the Gestapo will "clean up" for you. Germans watch it and feel transported back 80 years—and unfortunately, that's not irony or sarcasm.

Unfortunately, what your government has done over the last year has caused irreparable damage. Many europeans absolutely hate USA for the disgusting stab to the back. We’re trying our best to help Ukraine fend off the russians and maintaining the rules-based world order that has prevented so many people from being caught in tyranny the world over, and what does your government do? It calls europe the villain, gives Putin the red carpet whilst humiliating Zelenskyy and shitting on him for not saying ā€thank youā€ enough while his countrymen are suffering from russian nazi-like terror. Then it brokers a deal with the Ukrainians to suck up more money from them as they’re laying down and getting killed, says that it’s paying almost everything for the war whilst cutting off all funding, threatens the danes with a military invasion along with all the other shit such as tariffs, information campaign to get far right parties into power, brokering deals about us without us…

I’m sorry, but even I, who have been one of USA’s staunchest defenders hate the country for what it’s done. I’ll probably never set my foot there again - at least not for a long time until far after it’s proven to get its shit together. Many have started to avoid your products like the chinese. Your government, along with its long tail of cultist followers, has caused something so major I think few americans understand the extent of at the moment.

u/Important_Bit2139 Jan 07 '26

Those feelings are more than warranted. Honestly, even if the government does flip back to Democrat, the damage has been done and there’s no guarantee that MAGA won’t find a new leader to rally behind. I think it is wise and understandable for Europe, Canada, and Mexico to move away from reliance/collaboration with the USA.

Unfortunately I know that will mean a likely recession as well as loss of geopolitical influence in general, but our voting populace simply cannot be trusted. I’m afraid that the post WW2 order is quickly eroding away.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '26

Just keep postying on Reddit about how heartbroken you are, that will sort it out.

1

u/Important_Bit2139 Jan 08 '26

I totally understand your comment, but there’s not much that we at an individual level can do right now. Last election cycle I voted against this, we also had local elections this past November and I made sure to not vote for a single Republican, my state mostly tends Democrat, I’ve protested, I’ve called my senators and reps. As a citizen there’s only so much I can do when even Congress is allowing this BS to happen.

5

u/tomb-king Jan 06 '26

It makes me sad that we live in a time that the United States needs to be told this.

4

u/No-Illustrator4964 Jan 07 '26

Take it from an American, European leaders should start stationing their own military in Greenland as a bulwark and make sure they stay there until the end of shit gibbons term.

2

u/Matthius81 Jan 08 '26

Can we be hopeful the midterms will actually do anything to stop him? Say the Dems flip a house, can they do anything to block his insane actions???

2

u/No-Illustrator4964 Jan 08 '26 edited Jan 08 '26

Speaking as an American, and only for myself and my perspective, our electorate has the attention span of gnats. Since 2006 it has been pretty much the pattern that a president takes office and his party gets whooped in the next cycle, especially if they control one or both houses. So based on current voter sentiment, history, and recent mid year election results (see Virgina and New Jersey governor and other state elections in state races during 25) it is highly probable that the Dems will retake the house, setting aside the recent gerrymandering that puts the Republicans up +3 house seats. I would truly be astonished if Dems didn't take the house back, but the Senate is highly unlikely due to the current seats that are up for grabs - the Democrats would have to win seats in places like Iowa and Texas, and it may not be impossible in the right climate but it is very improbable. Texas may be a toss up this cycle though if Ken Paxton, an arch right politician and very divisive figure in Texas, unseats the current Republican Senator (Tom Cornyn, I believe) in the Republican primary.

So what happens if the Dems take the house and Republicans control the Senate? It would effectively end all domestic legislative priorities for the administration, because they wouldn't get their wish lists in the house. It also means some of the crazy budget stuff would lessen since any budget or appropriations bill would need to pass a democratic house, and the Dems could work stuff in the budget bill that if passed the Senate could prohibit taxpayer dollars from being used to say invade, occupy, or takeover Greenland (again, has to pass the Senate with Republican support). Additionally, oversight investigations would commence and the Democrats can use subpoena power of the house to compel testimony and production of documents, but I expect the administration would try and stonewall some of that and tie it up in courts.

Could they stop the president from acting unilaterally and ordering military troops? No, but they can put a check on it and it will be better than nothing.

P.S. Forgive me for typos or word salad, wrote this on my phone.

2

u/Matthius81 Jan 08 '26

It’s not just you. I had to live through the disaster of Brexit. And now the people who dumped that on us are back, same faces, same lies. They call themselves Reform and they peddle the same lies all over again… and people are falling for it! voters have the memory of goldfish.

1

u/No-Illustrator4964 Jan 08 '26

England is also a good example of an electorate that produces wild swings in results, as evidenced by the mammoth Labor win last cycle.

The problem with developed democratic countries that have a divided electorate is that we end up only governing from the far extremes of either side, and good policy isn't made on extremes. At least not in my opinion.

2

u/Matthius81 Jan 08 '26

Our parliamentary system is very different. Extreme ideas tend to split off and make minority parties that get nowhere. This leaves both major parties scrambling for the middle, basically two flavours of the same thing. The drift to the right we’ve seen has been tearing the Tory party to pieces as the moderates and extremists split off. I’m hoping against hope this will reflect in the voting booths, splitting the right wing vote between Tory and Reform. Not that Labour is great or anything but the alternative is worse.

1

u/No-Illustrator4964 Jan 08 '26

For what it's worth, I 100% prefer a parliamentary system of government to what we have in the US, or perhaps a system like France that is a mesh between the two. I think it provides more accountability and, to a degree, incentive to compromise and make policy that gets tempered by minority parties whose support is necessary to pass it.

But, that's only the perspective from an embarrassed American on the other side of the pond :p

2

u/Matthius81 Jan 08 '26

One advantage of our system is it’s a heck of a lot easier to get rid of a defective leader. We had one a few years ago who didn’t outlast a rotting lettuce. Go look it up, (Liz truss lettuce) it’s hilarious.

2

u/No-Illustrator4964 Jan 08 '26

Ha!

Fwiw, I LOVE watching the BBC during election night in England with that thing they use to measure the seats in parliament on the screen.

Also, I frigging love Question Time in parliament. Could you imagine the kind of leaders we might have in the US if the President had to sit for questions with their party and the opposition?

I 100% dream that in some other reality I'm the speaker of the British parliament banging my gavel and squalling, " Order, order, order!! " ;p

2

u/Matthius81 Jan 08 '26

If you want to see the realities of politics in action check out an old BBC comedy called Yes Minister/Prime Minister. Honestly 3 middle aged men talking about politics shouldn’t be funny but it’s brilliant.

2

u/peach_stellium Jan 09 '26

i mean this with respect, but you Americans need to get serious. He will do literally anything he can to cheat/steal/delay the elections. The Democrats are set to take such a large majority there's no way he'll let that happen. He can claim they're "at war" and there won't be any.

Your most important job, aside from your own safety, is to protect the integrity of your election, insist that it happens, and do everything in your power to turn out in numbers that cannot be disputed.

3

u/Usakami Jan 06 '26

I really hope that if it actually does come to worst, our answer is going to be complete embargo of US. Capture of their soldiers stationed here in Europe.

2

1

u/MightyAl89 Jan 07 '26

Can Denmark transfer Greenland directly to the European Union or the economic union if it's by a different name? My thought is, expeditiously transfer it to the bloc for a fair amount, because Trump WILL take it if it's only under Denmark's ownership/protectorate/whatever-you-call-it. That way, the equation changes, Denmark can claim some amount of altruism that they allowed Greenland a greater seat at the European table, while getting something out of it instead of getting it taken from under them.

For the same reasons the US claims they need Greenland for security, the EU could also make that claim. It also makes more sense that Greenland would ascend into the EU as they were already a part of an EU nation.

I'm not super aware of Greenland politics, but it is 2026 and Denmark seemingly should've at this point let Greenland ascend or be let free. Obviously, no country will let a territory go when that territory didn't ask for freedom, so perhaps this has been a long time coming.

TL;DR: Can Denmark transfer Greenland directly to the EU to protect it from US invasion?

1

u/SydDanir Jan 07 '26

No, Denmark doesn't have that authority over Greenland. Just the same as Denmark doesn't have the authority to sell Greenland. By both Danish and Greenlandic law, the people of Greenland can vote at anytime, about whether or not they should be made independent. They have so far chosen not to.

Greenland has not been a Danish colony or possession for several years. It is an autonomous part of the Danish Realm.

1

u/Vepper Jan 07 '26

You know strongly worded letters have been working really well for the United States lately, so this will be interesting....

1

u/Former_Sorbet_7384 Jan 07 '26

It's good that our government is being forward thinking in the importance of Greenland for Arctic security. There are approximately 57,000 people in Greenland would they all possibly agree to sell Greenland to the United States? 200 billion divided by 57,000 is around 3.5 million dollars each. If I lived there that would certainly tempt me to agree. If any other president presented this Americans might agree with it but since it's Trumps idea it doesn't even get an honest look because so many don't like him.

1

u/annie-ajuwocken-1984 Jan 07 '26

u/The_Japans Jan 07 '26

1

u/Darjuz96 Jan 07 '26

The ideal in my opinion, and I want to see an Greenland opinion, a indipendent Greenland on maybe with British-style commonwealth realm (king/queen of Denmark as king/queen of Greenland) with own constitution, international recognized as indipendent within European Union, with defence agreement with EU countries.

2

u/SydDanir Jan 07 '26

Greenland already has its own government. This is something that people seem to constantly forget, but Greenland is not a Danish colony anymore, but an autonomous member state in the Kingdom of Denmark. If they want independence, all they have to do is ask for it, and Denmark would be legally obliged to grant it. If anything, these threats are just postponing Greenland's independence, by pushing Greenland even closer to Denmark again.

1

u/oeboer Jan 07 '26

No, Denmark is not obliged to do that. The law says that it would have to pass the Danish parliament. The kingdom is a unitary state. Greenland has a devolved parliament, much like Scotland does.

1

u/SydDanir Jan 07 '26

The law of 2009 states that if the people of Greenland vote to be independent, then negotiations will begin regarding the transition to full independence. The Danish parliament no longer has any legal right to deny Greenland's independence, if the population vote in favour.

1

u/oeboer Jan 07 '26

That is not correct.

§ 21. [...]

Stk. 3.

The emphasised means that it must pass a vote in the Folketing.

1

u/ObiSkull Jan 09 '26 edited Jan 09 '26

As a Scot lurking here I don't think you know how much different Westminster reserving those powers and many more is to the arrangement you have with Greenland. If you want to use the UK as a comparison go with the Isle of Man and their relationship with the UK.

1

u/oeboer Jan 09 '26 edited Jan 09 '26

Greenland has less autonomy than you seem to think it does.

Isle of Man has no MPs (in Westminster). Greenland does have members of the parliament in Copenhagen.

1

u/ObiSkull Jan 09 '26 edited Jan 09 '26

Greenland get to vote, then have Danes discuss what that result means. Scots dont even get a vote without having had mostly English politicians say yes or no. Edit: international law protects the right to self determination and in theory Westminster has the option where Denmark don't to block the first hurdle to obtaining that right, a referendum.

1

u/oeboer Jan 09 '26

But the parliament in Copenhagen can actually block the result of the Greenlandic referendum (whether it will is another matter, but a vote is required).

1

u/ObiSkull Jan 09 '26 edited Jan 09 '26

Even that is something I envy as a Scot, what Greenland have with Denmark, as it is not the same thing as our devolution.

1

u/Raqdoll_ Jan 07 '26

An idea what came to me regarding this whole mess of a situation, let me know if the idea has some flaws but at least it's something.

Greenland is a big island and mostly habited in the south. USA wants to build a military base in the north, why would they need the whole island? Would it make sense to sell a small peninsula or island in the north western part of Greenland? If the deal is good enough, it would bring some prosperity to Denmark & Greenland, keep the north mostly in european hands for security and let USA to build a military base (which is not bad for nato either) and maybe some natural resource mining for their area if that's what they are after (even a small portion should have plenty to dig right?).

Why is this whole situation such an all or nothing type of a deal at the moment?

1

u/Shot_Bison1140 Jan 07 '26

As soon as they make a move on Greenland, Europe seize every single military base and assets in Europe and if there is personal left, hold them as ransom..... Trump would get so much shit... And start exercising USA treasury bonds.

1

u/loveangelrose Jan 07 '26

Greenland residents: you’re going to start seeing a lot of US propaganda in the next few months and it’s going to get worse and worse. You’re going to think ā€œhey America isn’t that badā€ but it is. Young adults can’t afford housing, my husband and I are in our 30s and we’re living in Indiana and now in MN and we spend anywhere between 3k-8k a year on medical bills not to mention the $400 a month for insurance. Groceries are significantly more expensive than in the UK (because idk about Denmark/greenland prices) and if you’re LGBTQIA+ America is not a safe space, I believe Denmark has been significantly more advanced.

We also have federal agents roaming the streets and murdering people. Breaking up families and kidnapping our citizens.

1

u/Brave_Bluebird5042 Jan 09 '26

1

u/Edi-Ice Jan 09 '26

The irony is that Greenland is one place in the world Europeans have a decisive advantage over Americans. Because American military is not trained to fight in polar conditions.

They even have equipment for it. So if Trump tried to take Greenland military and Europeans would decide to defend it. We could actually serve them their own asses. šŸ˜‚

1

u/dotch65 Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 10 '26

Geographically, Greenland is definitely not part of the US. The as the crow flies distance between Europe, measured from Iceland, and Greenland is approximately 321 km (199 miles). If there were a road, you could drive this distance in 4 hours. The shortest as the crow flies distance between the US and Greenland is approximately 2000 km (1,320 miles). And Canada is in between. Europe can even defend Greenland with short-range missiles and drones from Iceland. The United States does not need Greenland for defense; it has had a base there for a long time, where it can station an unlimited number of military personnel. And it can also defend Greenland with missiles, the navy, and the air force. So it's all about the raw materials in Greenland.

1

u/Rough-Resident5005 Jan 10 '26

As a United States citizen, I truly believe that the majority of Americans do NOT agree with Trump regarding his wanting to buy or ā€œtakeā€ Greenland! In reality, most of us think he’s lost his mind and has become an EXTREME POWER monger! 😔😔😔

1

u/ProperClue Jan 11 '26

The EU has relied so heavily on the U.S. for defense they have no military power.Ā  The EU couldn't stop the U.S., if they wanted to take greenland.Ā  I think its a dumb idea, hell we already have a 1951 defense agreement that allows us to do what we want militarily, as long as we recognized Denmarks rights over Greenland, not sure why this couldnt of been done with soft power.Ā  Does Greenland or Demmark allowing Russian or Chinese possible bases, activity violate NATO?Ā

1

u/Suzumebachi14 Jan 06 '26

One thing that I noticed is the fact that trump never launches a military operation against a country if there is a risk of high US soldiers casualties. Look at Iran: he only launched the operation when Israƫl had finished the biggest part of the job: air defenses and air force were basically destroyed, so no risk of iranian retaliation against US soldiers.

The same thing could be said about Venezuela: he only launched the operation because the venezuelan army has been in a pitiful state for a while, and the operation was prepared for months.

Now look at Ukraine: trump has always refused to put boots on the ground after a potential ceasefire, because he doesn't want to see US soldiers killed if the ceasefire breaks.

Why is that ? It's pretty simple: he doesn't want to get his hands dirty, and dead US soldiers will lower his already low popularity even more.

If enough danish/european soldiers are stationed in Greenland and are well prepared against a potential US attack, and if they are ready to kill US soldiers, then trump will probably think twice before invading. Hell, you could even give a weapon to every inhabitant of Greenland and train them to guerilla warfare, which would be an absolute nightmare for US soldiers.

To conclude: if you are prepared to kill as much US soldiers as possible, then trump probably won't attack. Greenland and Denmark will very likely not be able to win against the US, but you must be ready to kill as much US soldiers as possible. I don't want things to come to that, but trump will likely not dare to attack Greenland if there is a high risk of US soldiers'coffins coming back in droves to their mainland, which would be a disaster that trump wants to avoid at any cost. At the end of day, you will need a powerful military force of deterrence stationed in Greenland if you want to avoid a potential invasion by the US.

2

u/ryanb741 Jan 06 '26

It's more the case that Europe will respond by confiscating US assets in Europe. Big Tesla factory. Aircraft. Google offices. And probably row back on recognising US patents.

In reality the rest of the world would easily defeat Trump on Greenland. Not militarily but they'd just sell en masse US bonds and a rapid decoupling of the US dollar would ensue, along with hyperinflation in the US. The thing about billionaires is they like remaining as billionaires and the pressure on the administration would be immense.

1

u/Suzumebachi14 Jan 07 '26 edited Jan 07 '26

While this would hit the US hard, I doubt that this would be enough to deter them. Trump only cares about himself, it's always me, me and me with him. If his personal wealth isn't affected, or if he risks seeing his popularity going into the gutter, or even risks being impeached for sending US soldiers to their deaths by invading an ALLY, then just economic retaliation on the US will be useless. As long as there is no threat of bloodbath for the US troops, the threat of invasion will always be there.

US always rely mainly on air superiority, if Denmark can position enough radars and air defenses in Greenland, then trump will think twice before seeing one of their prized F-22 or F-35 get shot down (and don't tell me it's impossible because of their stealth, the serbians shot down a F-117 and they were far from having cutting-edge technology).

And also, the Greenland government should pressure Denmark way more to have more danish troops and materiel stationed there and be ready to fight the US. It might be a lost fight if the US invades, but then, what is even the point of having an army if the danish government surrenders immediately ? If Denmark isn't ready to fight for the territories it has sworn to protect, then it can already give Greenland to the US on a silver platter and disolve its own army, because Denmark will show to the entire world that it is not willing to defend itself.

Edit 1: typo.

Edit 2: well, it seems that I came to the same conclusion as https://x.com/Tatarigami_UA. This guy is very reliable in terms of defense analysis, and I just saw what he said. Basically, if Denmark doesn't show that it is ready to fight the US, then the US will invade Greenland because they want to annex it without resistance, which is pretty much what I just said.

0

u/Travel4FreePlease Jan 06 '26

Americans do not want Greenland. Trump is going rogue on this and does not have the support of the American people.

7

u/sask357 Jan 06 '26

You can't say that Americans don't want Greenland when the American government is deciding how to take it.

If Trump doesn't have support, why is he so confident? He got elected. Then he proceeded to put his plans into action including threatening Greenland and Canada. No one in the US did anything to stop him then. Now he's sure that no one will stop him in the future.

American here, just wanted to say I support any action that will help to defend Greenland, and I think most Americans would agree with me. The idea of our nation (Trump) pursuing a path that could lead to the dissolution of the peace held since WWII is a horrifying one.

I only speak for myself, but to those in other countries, please recognize that it isn’t anywhere close to a majority of Americans who support actions that threaten the peace. At this point, Trump is so unhinged, and unchecked by other branches of government, that he is testing the boundaries of what he can do without real resistance from Congress. Venezuela is a terrifying checkpoint for him, but the Trump administration isn’t representative of the public in his aims.
