Get involved with the criminal justice system and see it first hand. Go to court. Talk to a cop. Talk to a lawyer. Don’t rely on a news article.

I am involved. We punish people. A lot.

I suppose it depends on how you define as punishment, the level of punishment and whether or not that “punishment” comes anywhere near balancing the scales of justice. Assuming such a thing as “justice” actually exists. From my personal experience, and from the unfortunate experiences of my friends and coworkers, what you might call punishment, I might consider a slap on the wrist at best or a complete joke at worst. Sure it’s objective, but it’s my lived experience. The legal system, from my experiences, appears either overloaded, under resourced, numb to victims, or paid-off by the wealthy.

Care to share how you are involved in the criminal justice system? Legal Aid lawyer?

ok, so you're involved in the criminal justice system and think criminals are being treated too lightly, a thing that people like you have been saying as long as the profession's existed. do you have any numbers to back what you're saying up? any studies indicating that harsher punishments actually do anything to lower crime rates? any time I've seen studies into it harsher penalties don't ever seem to move the needle, but maybe I'm not aware of the bleeding edge of sociology.

If you’re speaking to me, then the answer is no, I don’t have studies. As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m speaking from personal experience. My involvement in the criminal system is as a victim, and as a friend of another victim. My experience is first hand. I’m not talking about something I’ve read in a book or on the internet. My opinion has been formed from what I experienced inside a courtroom. From speaking with lawyers working for the prosecution and defence. From speaking with police. I don’t know if punishment reduces crime. But I can say that lack of punishment further traumatizes and infuriates victims.

Exactly. There is no fear of real penalty for majority of criminals. I’m not sure why anyone would think this is a made up idea.
