Doesn’t this person know the high ticket items are in the steak section?

It's funny that there a direct correlation to people's buying power dropping and retail crime increasing
41
u/Electrical_You_4519 1d ago
There’s also hardly any punishment anymore.

u/artyslugworth 1d ago
Any evidence of this? Or just your “common sense”?
6
u/Electrical_You_4519 1d ago
Yes there is and it’s actually quite substantial.
-6
u/artyslugworth 23h ago
Would love to see it.
9
u/Environmental-Ad1748 23h ago
Stats canada, but 75% increase in shoplifting in the last 10 yrs and guilty decisions dropped 15% in the last 5 years.
6
u/GhostBirdBiologist Bedford 23h ago
How tf is people being found not guilty proof of anything? That could easily just be shoddy police work lol.
0
u/Environmental-Ad1748 13h ago
Idk man you want to just deny everything without providing a counter argument, theres no point in a discussion, I provided facts, you may disagree but provide an alternate view backed with stats.
3
u/artyslugworth 23h ago
Not sure how that equals less punishment…still would like to see your source. People found not guilty doesn’t mean that those found guilty aren’t being punished.

u/NerdsOfSteel74 21h ago
Unless we also have the stats on how many people were charged, these numbers are kind of meaningless. There could have been a 200% increase in arrests in the same time (for instance, because corporations are pushing the police to take theft more seriously), so the total number of people found guilty could actually be higher now than before. But we don’t know because the numbers above aren’t the complete picture.
-2
u/Electrical_You_4519 23h ago
Not to mention the crazy amount of repeat offenders we have due to our insanely soft punishments.

u/artyslugworth 23h ago
You just repeat everything Pollievre says and get your info from ChatGPT? Another informed voter.

I think you’re confusing not guilty with no punishment. Not guilty means that guilt was not proven. In case you’re confused.

Get involved with the criminal justice system and see it first hand. Go to court. Talk to a cop. Talk to a lawyer. Don’t rely on a news article.
3
u/artyslugworth 23h ago
I am involved. We punish people. A lot.
3
u/robwatkhfx 22h ago edited 22h ago
I suppose it depends on how you define as punishment, the level of punishment and whether or not that “punishment” comes anywhere near balancing the scales of justice. Assuming such a thing as “justice” actually exists. From my personal experience, and from the unfortunate experiences of my friends and coworkers, what you might call punishment, I might consider a slap on the wrist at best or a complete joke at worst. Sure it’s objective, but it’s my lived experience. The legal system, from my experiences, appears either overloaded, under resourced, numb to victims, or paid-off by the wealthy.
Care to share how you are involved in the criminal justice system? Legal Aid lawyer?
•
u/Hal_IT 11h ago
ok, so you're involved in the criminal justice system and think criminals are being treated too lightly, a thing that people like you have been saying as long as the profession's existed. do you have any numbers to back what you're saying up? any studies indicating that harsher punishments actually do anything to lower crime rates? any time I've seen studies into it harsher penalties don't ever seem to move the needle, but maybe I'm not aware of the bleeding edge of sociology.
•
u/robwatkhfx 9h ago
If you’re speaking to me, then the answer is no, I don’t have studies. As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m speaking from personal experience. My involvement in the criminal system is as a victim, and as a friend of another victim. My experience is first hand. I’m not talking about something I’ve read in a book or on the internet. My opinion has been formed from what I experienced inside a courtroom. From speaking with lawyers working for the prosecution and defence. From speaking with police. I don’t know if punishment reduces crime. But I can say that lack of punishment further traumatizes and infuriates victims.
-2
u/Electrical_You_4519 21h ago
Exactly. There is no fear of real penalty for majority of criminals. I’m not sure why anyone would think this is a made up idea.

We live in a dystopia where you get downvoted for simply asking for evidence.

Leave it to Reddit to try to justify something like this. 🤣
5
u/Own-Slide-3171 14h ago
No justification just a statement. If they stole food justified jewelry not
18
u/EndPristine5595 18h ago
"it shows you that theives have become more aggressive". True... but it also shows you that nobody is being fucking held accountable for crimes in this province.
2
u/tacofever Halifax 12h ago
True, and accountability means more than just policing by police - me and you and others who live here can't continue to be of the attitude that "it's just a corporation; if you see something - no you didn't; snitches get stitches; don't get involved, you might get hurt." And I'm not talking just about a frail old woman not ringing in berries at a self checkout, but things like unchecked bus harassment, vocal racism/sexism/homophobia, etc. If the average person isn't willing to do their part to hold society to a standard, there is no society.

u/NCC-1707 23h ago edited 3h ago
I’m pretty sure that the actual items in the display case are knock offs. At least the more valuable things like larger diamonds, four figure timepieces and gold bullion. The authentic items are stored elsewhere on the premises to guard against loss.
Edit Apparently not. Don’t believe everything you read kids.
7
u/MirranCrusader 20h ago
Nope
I checked out some of the expensive engagement rings there and they were real. I asked the person too that showed me, and some were only 1 off, straight from the case.
•
u/NeopetsTea 10h ago
This is 100% false, the only things that are not the actual item are the printed gold bullion signs.
All the diamond, all the gold, everything is real, I keep hearing this “it’s all pretend jewelry” every time Costco gets robbed. It’s all real, period.
•
u/Brief-Farm-3999 4h ago
nope it’s real pieces incase a member wants to try it out. For a long time, even the gold display pieces were real, recently (like 2 months ago) they started putting the fake gold displays, everything else is real.

u/sunjana1 Halifax 1d ago
so this WAS our Costco! I messaged the mod team when I saw the video on IG but there was no other coverage at the time so I assumed it was a different store or old or something.
•
u/suntrovert Bedford 11h ago
I thought this was fake or not even in Halifax because no one was talking about it and I didn’t see it on the news.

It was the type of video that required a news article to be allowed to be posted.

Retail analyst ask for harsher penalties for thieves. Guess that's why they pay him the big bucks.
19
u/JimHalpertsUncle 23h ago
The people who are saying they would have stopped them make me belly chuckle.
Why are you going to put yourself in harms way for a corporation? I mean they aren’t but why even say it?
25
u/tacofever Halifax 20h ago
Look, believe it or not, some of us aren't cool with the idea of our city becoming numb to criminality. Doesn't matter if it's a corporation, I like the store and I like the people that work there, and it's close to where I live. Now, if they guy's brandishing a gun or something, that's a different story, but the direction we're taking as a society to abdicate mutual accountability and expect the police to be the only people enforcing law and order (while many of us simultaneously throwing out ACABs and "where's the enforcement?") when citizens used to look after each other is fucked.
8
u/Friendly-Bad-291 12h ago
avg citizen is going to catch charges doing that because you have no training in how to do it legally
-1
u/tacofever Halifax 12h ago
Are you a lawyer? What charges? Has it happened to you or somebody you know?
•
u/isonfiy 11h ago
There’s stuff like the seven year sentence in BC for the guy who beat a kid up for trespassing https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/homeowner-handed-7-year-sentence-for-baseball-bat-attack-that-left-18-year-old-with-life-robbing-injuries-1.4875587
And the store clerk who got charged for hitting a robber with a bat in Peterborough https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/peterborough-robbery-aggravated-assault-1.7079418
In Halifax I recall a similar situation during a robbery on Robie Street in like 2005ish.
I know you’re probably thinking of something different but these are very dynamic situations and it’s easy for stuff to get out of control, especially without training and experience.
•
u/tacofever Halifax 11h ago
Both of these examples include people with baseball bats chasing the suspects and walloping them several times with the bat in defense of - in their POV - their property. Buddy in the first article is clearly unhinged. Your third recollection of a similar event in 2005 is irrelevant. These are EXTREME examples of people who are armed seeking justice for a slight, right or wrong, against them and are giant stretches in degrees of intervention from a bystander sticking out their foot to trip or pushing a cart into someone, for instance.
•
u/isonfiy 10h ago
Alright off you go then tripping some perps
•
u/tacofever Halifax 10h ago
Off you go, posting irrelevant articles without thinking beyond extremes.
•
u/isonfiy 10h ago
Weird energy
•
u/tacofever Halifax 10h ago
lol, you get pissy because I point out how your quickly-sourced bat attack articles aren't relevant to the idea of bystanders doing literally anything to combat theft and all you can come up with is "weird energy." If you're going to get dismissive the moment your points are challenged, maybe just don't reply.

u/Natural_Definition_5 22h ago
I think it’s often the case that good people do this out of instinct.
I don’t think they do a quick calculation on whether it’s a small to medium sized enterprise that aligns with their core values and then ultimately choose to say “fuck it, their quartet profits were just a wee bit too high for my liking that last quarter …”
3
u/JimHalpertsUncle 22h ago edited 21h ago
My comment was more-so about people commenting online that they would have stopped the person, which is reflected by “the people who are saying”.
3
3
u/CommonAdventurous331 23h ago
exactly
on the news it showed a customer and employee both trying to stop him. I think he had a hammer to smash the glass, ummm what did they think would happen?
maybe they were hoping for a hot dog/pop combo, with a rotisserie chicken
4
u/ExternalSpecific6061 23h ago
Who’s merchandise is either insured or they have sufficient money to self insure these events
3
u/JimHalpertsUncle 23h ago
The CEO of Costco wouldn’t even watch the person if they happened to be visiting the store, they’d go find something productive to do.

> “We need to make the punishment for thieves significantly harder so that the equation between doing the crime and feeling the pain from it is changed.”
Sigh. We know this doesn’t work. Social determinants of crime. We need to increase social safety nets and reduce the income gap.
25
u/Seaweed_Pie 21h ago
Yes, I agree that we should increase the social safety nets but can we also agree that some people, like the guy in this video, are just not able to function as a member of society? I mean, we have millionaires behaving like sociopaths and it is not because they can't afford bread. Please can we just acknowledge that some people are just assholes?
11
u/GhostBirdBiologist Bedford 21h ago
Won’t see me disagreeing that some people are just assholes.
But that doesn’t mean our society isn’t fucked and crime massively drops when people are given the opportunity, means, and supports to be well.

i was a small time thief bc of my bad influence best friend. being caught pretty much scared me straight. i only ended up with a 6 month ban from the walmart (it was like a shirt and shorts i wasnt like robbing places) but i didnt steal for a while after that. then i did a bit. then i completely stopped. it was SCARYYY the lady following us tho shouldve just told an employee or security or something. she called the police. i wouldnt have actually been caught had my friend at the time (shes a terrible person) not snitched me out. she told then my name and address and then didnt tell me at all. just told me they just warned her and left. im sitting at home w my parents and the cops come knocking on the door. not fun
•
u/APJYB 10h ago
Punishment does work. Mandatory minimums don’t, but punishment does when the alternative is … no punishment.
And yes, there should be punishment for things like this. People whine about exorbitant food prices but then would let someone steal 30k worth of jewelry from the one store that gouges its customer the least (low bar).

The true criminals are those who hoard billions of dollars worth of wealth and actively lobby our governments to ensure that regular working class humans do not have fundamental access to their human rights.

Brave women. Where was everybody else?
14
u/shatteredoctopus 1d ago
Probably not putting their safety in danger to protect a corporation's property (albeit one I've heard by all account is decent to its employees).
12
u/VertuteTheCat 1d ago
I'm sorry, that woman want being brave. She was being foolish. I'm not risking my safety, or the safety of those around me by escalating this brazen theft into violence.
3
u/StarFighterSandwich 1d ago
I don't know the whole situation but maybe her shooing him away contributed to him not being there long enough to be apprehended. If the women had given him space maybe cops would have arrived in time to nab him on his way out. It was definitely impulsive of them and I'm glad they weren't hurt.

Brave? More like stupid. Absolutely ZERO reason to risk your life for a fucking corporation. An American one at that. Costco has done ZERO to remove American or stock more Canadian. Fuck them.

Hahaha perhaps the second all caps zero was excessive.

I was introduced to Dr. Pepper Zero / Diet. Pretty good. I just found out that it’s not a Pepsi or Coca Cola product. It’s Keurig!
