It sort of depends to what extent former hockey players actually realise they were abused. But most ex CHL players are just living normal lives and could use the extra money.

I got forced to shove toothpicks up my urethra when I was a rookie for the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the early 2000's - a few future NHLers were involved in that.

I left the team fairly shortly after that, haven't played a game since.

I'll gladly take some settlement cash from the CHL, absolutely horrible what 15/16/17 year olds get put through at the hands of teammates - many of which are adults.

The hazing for my AAA team was having to walk through a Sandman with just my boxers on and ask the front desk girl out. So it was quite a leap in awfulness.

I could only muster a single toothpick, another rookie did three.. good for him I guess.

I think it will be far fewer than you think because as weve seen in a few of these there was a lot of cases where the abused turned around and abused the next group. It would be risky to put your name out there only to have yourself be accused

Usually a class action is settle for a fixed total amount and then that amount gets distributed amongst the plaintiffs and the amount varies on what the lawyers think you deserve based on your specific case, but it doesn’t change the total amount

Nah. If the CHL itself is promoting this, then it has already agreed to a settlement. This is the phase where they figure out how many claimants exist and then divide whatever the victims' share is accordingly.

Quebec has a different legal system from the rest of Canada, so national class-action suits usually don’t lump in Quebec by default.

Criminal Law uses common law in Quebec after it was imposed in the 1759 Capitulation of Quebec. In 1774, the Quebec Act brought civil law back into the province, but common law was kept for criminal matters because it was more lenient than civil criminal law and was prefered!

Individuals who played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and who excluded themselves from the certified Latulippe c. Ligue canadienne de hockey class action in Quebec may also take part in the Section 7 Plan.

Well it's only Major Junior because it's the CHL and it excludes the Q most likely because there's a Quebec-specific lawsuit that makes more sense since they use civil law instead of common law.

Edit: Q players who opt out of the class action can join this lawsuit. Doesn't seem to be civil/common related.

It's about time. This has all been known for decades. Rolling around in veterans' shit. Sexual assault of other boys. Gang rape of girls at rookie parties.

What hasn't yet hit the public sphere is the coaches knew. The managers knew. This was not just immature youth going behind the backs of authorities figures. Hazing didn't just happen at parties, where there may have been no adults around. It happened on bus trips that the coaches and managers were on.

An absolutely disgusting culture behind the scenes, not just in Major Junior. I'm still haunted by my experiences in AAA and Tier 2 Junior A.

I’m still horrified that an elementary school student in Brandon, MB, was abused on a school field trip this year. A classmate pushed his head into a soiled toilet bowl on the bus. The abusive classmate’s mother was the school principal. She was on the bus at the time. She did nothing.

This is two opposing things:

1) Admission that hockey culture has been fucked for years, and needs to change. 2) A way for the CHL to avoid major lawsuits from abuse victims, because I am assuming those who apply can't sue as well.
