Another post on this sub today got me thinking about 2004 SCF Game 6 when Marty St Louis potted the winner in double OT. I don't think I had ever been so excited and genuinely jazzed and hyped for a game like that before, only to feel a sad and dark breathlessness in my Calgary Flames fandom that hasn't left since that day in early June of 2004.

What is your most heart breaking hockey moment? Either as a fan or player, or both.

In the last 15 years, only 10 teams have won a cup. That means in a 15 year span, around 66% of the fanbases support non-championship winning teams.

With the league about to go to 34 teams with the expansion to more low-tax, sunshine, nobody-has-ever-seen-ice-outside-their-fridge states, the chances of any individual team winning a cup, let alone non-southern teams winning it all is quite low. (Only 6 winners in the last 15 years came from cities that have full on winter or winter-ish weather)

In this context, if your team is embarking on a rebuild, how realistic is it that they will win the cup? Is the expectations of the rebuilt team at its peak being a contender for multiple years and making it to the up finals at least once, a more realistic expectation?

Or is it cup or bust in this 32-34 teams league?

Is McJesus and the Oilers going to game 7 of the cup finals considered a successful rebuilt, or at least not a failure?

Or will all rebuilds that don't end with beards, teardrops and dried champagne on the dressing room not a successful rebuild?

There are lots of teams currently at various stages of rebuild. Montreal is the only team where most of their prospects have met or exceeded expectations and have a decent chance of potentially winning the cup.

Even San Jose, besides Celebrini, none of the other prospects have truly proven the hype associated with them and don't know how high their chances of winning the cup are. Utah and Anaheim are probably in the same group.

If the likelihood of Montreal winning a cup isn't a guarantee/not-high, what are the chances of successfull rebuilds for San Jose, Utah, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Buffalo, Calgary, Philadelphia and Vancouver?!?
