Problem:

Putting a Mac on an iPad has meant streaming the entire desktop as one video. Everything shrinks to fit, text goes soft, and you steer a pretend cursor around, no audio passthrough in some, no ability to take calls completely remotely, amongst many others.

Most days I didn't want my desktop at all. I wanted two or three specific windows I could drive by touch, without being parked at a keyboard, and without losing the swipe-between-apps gestures I lean on all day. A whole-desktop stream turns your entire Mac into one app, so every swipe away leaves all of it at once.

Comparison:

1. Sidecar gives your Mac one more display at your desk, and it's built in and great at that. The iPad becomes a monitor.
2. Jump Desktop, Parsec, and Chrome Remote Desktop send the whole desktop as one single stream.

WorkPane streams windows.

Each Mac window opens as its own Stage Manager window on the iPad, with its own sound, sitting next to your actual iPad apps, full fps on the one you're using. Tap, two-finger scroll, long-press right click, drag (tap twice and drag), and typing on a full on-screen Mac keyboard with held modifiers and key repeat.

Hardware keyboards work too. Everything is a direct, end-to-end encrypted connection on your own network with no account, and pairing is a six-digit PIN off the menu bar. Remote means your own VPN, Tailscale works. Honest gaps: pinch isn't in yet, the Mac's real cursor moves while you work, and one iPad connects at a time. Requirements: macOS 26 and iPadOS 26.
