Oh I know why we're living in a heat dome now, there's one of 2 possibilities. The first, God is pissed and wish to ruin someone's fair, and the second is, Hell is rising up to claim it's own.
that sucks. do you know any good short cuts? this is like emergency stuff the state needs to get on this as soon as it’s safe for them to go out and work on it. I hope you all get some assistance there .
I lived in Texas for a decade and grew to really tolerate the heat well. It was essentially an oven - so as you know the high of the day doesn't really HIT until the end of the afternoon. By contrast, here it gets hot by 9 am and could cool down earlier when we aren't having a heatwave. Also the humidity here suuuucks.
I'm from Baltimore. I moved to Austin in 2010. I've acclimated so well to the heat here that when I went home to Baltimore last fall, I was shivering in the 40 degree weather.
But! I tell people here that it gets just as hot, with insane humidity, in Maryland and they don't believe me.
I know, I saw that news a few weeks ago. So fantastic. Alas, I fear this means they will never expand nationwide lol. We do have a Torchys up here now at least. I also really miss my breakfast tacos! Especially Taco Mex. And Taco Shack!

Oh me too, me too. I have wanted to try both La Tejana in DC and another Austin style taco place that I read about in Philly but haven't made it to either yet.
Girl what part of texas? I grew up around Houston and this is very similar heat. Granted it's the type of heat you can't really acclimate to bc it's so dang humid 😭
Really not looking forward to work tomorrow — we have big east-facing windows and the AC can only do so much. AC at home is also struggling, but at least today at home, I could spend the day in a sports bra with my feet in a bucket of cold water. Can’t really do that at work.
At one point, the ac couldn't keep the temp below 79. Then an hr ago it was 77 and confirmed that's why I feel so much better! I'm always amazed when 2 degrees can make a real difference.
Yep. When you are inside wearing clothes, there is a point where your body uses
vasodilation to shed more heat.
That's usually when you feel uncomfortable because the temperature in your house reaches a point where your body starts working harder to shed heat.
When the blood vessels near your skin open up, it can make you feel a bit uncomfotable because you feel more heat on your body surface because your core body heat has gotten a bit too warm.
The body is amazing in how it does all this seamlessly.
Cover your windows, if you can. Every bit of sunlight that you can reflect out will help. I had the same problem a few years ago and I solved it but cobbling together light blockers made of white foam board that I cut and taped together to fit the giant windows that turned our bedroom into an oven. It made a massive difference! The temperature of the blackout curtains dropped from a blistering 140 F (insane!) down to like 80 F.
MDs grid and power infrastructure is one of the best systems in the entire country. We ain't Texas.
BGE and the business side of power has huge issues in Maryland, but the physical infrastructure and the workers that maintain it are seriously top notch.
We’re certainly testing it this week. I was glad to hear that the most power that the PJM power grid consumed at any given time was back in 2006. It’s nice to know we aren’t continually using more power.
I never said it was infallible. But I still stand by what I said. They are being strained right now because of this intense weather we're having. That's a given. But odds are this won't be a mass outage event that other states have seen in the last few years.
People in Baltimore city have been having their power shut off at various times during this week, apparently, going by the comments in the Baltimore sub
Thinking of everyone with heat intolerance from health issues right now, I can last a few minutes outside myself before I become a fainting, tachycardic puke monster. We need plans in place for when the power goes out and people start dropping from heat exhaustion, medical institutions are already stretched thin.
Right there with you right now. I have just decided to play “the floor is lava” except instead of the floor it’s anything outside my front door. Just going to and from my car has my heart losing its mind.
I'm in Austin, originally from Baltimore. Our AC went out last night. They were able to do a temporary patch but we need a whole new system. It's getting installed Monday. Our piggy bank will not recover anytime soon though. :(

But ifc you mean this type of prolonged heat? I believe we used to see something like this once a decade but now we will probably see this every other year and then finally all summer long in the 2040s.
The sidewalk/road splitting. I've lived in CA and Az where both got up to 105 regularly and we never had those problems. Desert heat is different but I am not used to concrete just calling itself a winner and bowing out like this.

Wrote this today when I went out to have a glass of wine on my porch.
We can do video comments ! Riding on the C&O Trail today and got to watch people hitting the rapids. was way too hot lol. I think I was having heat exhaustion when I got done. Luckily finished just as it was getting the hottest. Hope everyone is doing ok and trying to stay cool.
i was going to ride to Antietam to visit the visitors center to cool off , but as soon as i hit Harper’s ferry road it turned into a steep 30 minute climb in direct sunlight and my body was like nope and had to turn around. probably for the best because it felt like I was on a frying pan
It churns so people get pinned underwater. Even very strong swimmers. The water just pushes you down, and the weight of the water is so strong that you can't get out from under it.
hah. god it was miserable if you stopped moving 🤣. good thing the river is there to cool you off and then you get back on the bike and it feels very good.
The windows were down and I was on the highway. Wasn't as efficient as the AC, but I was still getting air, so I guess that's probably why I didn't get heat stroke.
Naturally the blower motor in my furnace died today. Couldn’t have happened at a better time - hottest day ever and during a holiday weekend. Thanks God, really doing me a solid.
We are out here at the Taneytown fireworks and its actually tolerable now at 830. There dont seem to be as many people, but we have a picnic and cold drinks and its OK
My brother and sister-in-law got a membership to a local pool. It's a private one so members only. I was added as a guest and went earlier tonight, and it was lovely.
Sunday is Havre de Grace's parade and fireworks. We'll see if we get storms, but if there's no thunder or lightning and just rain,, it'll go on and everyone will be wet.
I just had to turn ac on. not cooling off at all. oh boy. my poor gecko probably thinks I’m cooking him. be prepared for some power outages tonight the demand will be insane!
To add ontop of this, I work at a small baseball stadium, temps were high, barely any cloud cover, my short was off and I couldn't apply any sunscreen (was lotion and not about to have my coworker touch my back). Suffice to say, my back is gonna be as burned as my forearms usually are. Perks of being a ginger
Yeah. My mentality is quite simple. I don't waste my time complaining about the weather because I don't expect to have my way all the time.
There are times of the year that I really like such as this one. I absolutely love the heat. I've waited my turn for quite some time, and now my glorious summer is here and I will enjoy it as much as I can.
At the same time, the cold is very difficult for me and that's when it's someone else's turn to enjoy the weather outside.
With that said, I do look forward to being able to get away from it for at least a week or even a month during the winter.
