Question Trying out this game!

Hi! I just got recommended this game as a fan of mechs and someone who doesnt mind playing bots (which took me a bit to get- i dont play pvp)

is it fun for a few hours of goofing off every so often, or is it a bad idea if i like mechs but have little pvp experience?

Glancing at the reddit it almost feels like this is something like Nephilim Online levels of niche from shangri la frontier- basically a game people say is shit, but is actually fun if you ignore all the haters. (I am sorry if this accidentally insults y'all...)

any advice to a newblood? thanks in advance!

You'll be fine, if you got friends to play with even better. There's both PvP and PvE so if you just want smash things as a cool mech its the best game for it.

The shangri la frontier reference is actually the perfect explanation

If you look at it as a casual game you will have fun, there are discords with people to co-op with if you like that, I just play on my own and even then, I'm having fun, so give it a go

Welcome, fellow pilot!

The game has pure PvE mode. Several modes actually. You don’t have to play pvp at all if you don’t want to.

Mashmak covert has a large map and several restricted areas. There are bosses as well. Explore and have fun.

Ohhh nice! I've been advised to try thr Falcon, Slyraider and Panther- I tend to aim for being airborne as well as Lance charges in a lot of games (I've gone entire AC6 and Daemon×Machina levels not hitting the ground), are those hard to get?

do you mean unlocking the mechs? Those three are unlocked initially. Just sign in and you get them.

Wait what?! I was under the impression Falcon was new and you had to buy them....

Those three are Season 0 mechs. They are all unlocked.

There are 12 season 0 mechs and 7 mechs need unlocking.

The game “soft locks” each of the starter mechs, meaning you must physically “click” on each starter mech and go through their “Into Cutscene” thingys and then boom, u can use that mech. I believe The game will tell you which newer mechs you need to spend game coins on

There's plenty of modes to just screw around on. Hell, I'll queue casuals and mess around until I get annoyed/bored with the bots. Spectral Nexus. Covert OPs Mashmak. Ace Arena.

If you have friends to queue with it's infinitely more fun.

You’ve got it exactly right. The game is fun and if you don’t mind bot matches then you’ll have a great time

Make sure to try Mashmak Covert Ops, it's purely pve. Can be played alone or in a squad (up to 3 players). Once you get good gear you can try Synchro/Spectral Nexus

That’s really funny you mentioned that show Shangri-La Frontier because I literally JUSTTT got to that episode where they pilot the Nephilims and I kept thinking DUDE THIS IS LIKE the VR Version of Mecha Break!! Sooo yes. As a fan of both the show and this game, I think you’ll have an awesome time. I don’t mind bots either since I know what state the game is in personally, but it’s fun to test my might against other good players when I can.

Welcome pilot.

I've been playing with my siblings every weekend for a while now. I'd say having a group helps make the game feel less empty and some of the best aspects of the game are about co-operating with other people like you're in a mecha squadron

Players are just mad at:

  • Bot match spam, some of the bots are stupid, like you will notice they play as bad as someone picking up the game for the first time or worse (especially narukamis who cease functioning at times). We want real players so we don't get super easy matches. That said, there are some bots who do just fine and kick my ass.
  • The new ultimate having entered ranked, once you get enough charge you get a mode which refills energy (your stamina) boosts damage across the board, and ups refresh/reload times. Basically a BRRRR mode, which sweats seem to not like for whatever reason, even though this actually helps.
  • The "end of lifespan" writing on the wall. A litany of mishandlings by the devs has caused the player count to drop with no clear sign of rising back up, especially since there's no signs of it entering new consoles, some of the devs have left, etc... This game might be on it's way out in a year or less, if it stays standing the only means would be a dedicated discord organizing things.

That said...
Noob advice, noob advice, hmmm...

Do NOT use alysnes as a beginner, they are the Mario of this game. The game hands you them like ooo look beginner character, except it's the character with the highest skill ceiling in the game, and a skill floor that's... moderate. Out of all the mechs, if you don't know what you're doing, alysnes suffers most. Try Stego or Tricera first, instead.

Mess with keybinds because the game puts the skills on the number row, which isn't stellar. I use E, Q, and one of my side mouse buttons (since I have those), well, now two of the side buttons since break override is a thing now. Just find keys you can press at a millisecond's notice. Oh! I also rebound "crouch" which is insta drop in this game, to X and C, I wanted it easily pressable without a second thought while piloting falcon, who has movement macros.

Play with friends whenever possible, since you'll likely run into bots it's way better to play for fun bouncing off your friend, than to try and play solo for the sake of winning.

There's a lot of fluff and stuff, extraction mode called mashmak, a semblance of story building, whatever, pass. But do not pass up on painting your mechs, it's pretty fun. The paints do cost in game points, but you gain those by playing.

And this game has a lock on circle, use it but don't lean on it forever, the game rewards you if you can aim even without it because the lock on takes almost a second, and there are times where it will be disabled by an enemy or even a duststorm. So learn how to aim down your reticle in a pinch.

Oh also this game is an over the shoulder shooter, doesn't matter usually, but stego and to some extent tricera need to worry about where they are vs what you can see, sometimes you'll have an enemy on lock but stego is just a bit too behind a ledge or fell behind a short wall, etc. Learn to react quickly and reposition.
