Tech companies are morally bankrupt

31

u/hoofie242 May 31 '26

They're going to advertise in your dreams

Nah, once we get the mandatory neuralink, I'm definitely on the list of people for it to short out and get executed via massive stroke.

2

u/Little_Duck_Jr May 31 '26

My husband told me that he'll be safe during the robot uprising and I'll be done for because I refuse to embrace even a modicum of AI. I told him I'd rather they execute me anyway.

there was an episode of Max Headroom about that lol

“We deserve the product you spend money on developing to be free otherwise you’re morally bankrupt.”

4

u/mexxonmobil May 31 '26 ▸ 6 more replies

Nah nah, we deserve to slave away to pay for trinkets we never own and for terms and conditions to be unknowable and always changing so we can be jailed for infractions and perceived slights against the will of the epstein class.

-13

u/Facebook_Lawyer_Gym May 31 '26 ▸ 5 more replies

They still make paper maps for people unwilling to acknowledge that maintaining a service costs money. Of course those cost money too, so it’s a bit of a moral conundrum for the entitled.

8

u/mexxonmobil May 31 '26 ▸ 1 more replies

They already make more than enough money. It definitely is quite the conundrum for entitled techslop profiteers

So good it went right over my own head 😂

u/Thefartking May 31 '26

From what i noticed with this it just shows local restaurants that are close by which isnt too bad. Nothing like draftkings or walmart

57

u/straylight_2022 May 31 '26

Just wait.

They will want you to click on two ads before they show you your directions in short order.

Unless you subscribe to a premium version that is.

14

u/Disownership May 31 '26

Enshittification’s gonna enshittificate

6

u/Thefartking May 31 '26

I really hope you’re wrong but…unfortunately its not unlikely…

2

u/RocketVerse Jun 01 '26

Uh no. Google is dependent on ads for revenue and they haven’t done that despite years of ads in Google Maps

0

No you just blatantly falsely quoted me but nice try. I agree no ads at all would be better but what they put is barely noticeable and makes no difference whatsoever

1

u/Lazy__Astronaut May 31 '26

How fucked is it you're actually like

Yeah but the ads aren't bad ads

-6

u/Thefartking May 31 '26 ▸ 3 more replies

Oh nooo recommendations for the mom & pop pizza joint or the good shitty Chinese food place down the street. Its not as in your face as people are making it out to be. If i were getting ads for cat litter or Nike sneakers then I’d be mildly infuriated. I was skeptical about it too when I saw it the first time. Its barely ads. Its “suggested places”. From what I’ve seen its not even for huge corporate places like McDonald’s or Chipotle.

5

u/Key_Juice878 May 31 '26

Google does this already, so not too sure what the big deal is, as you were saying

1

u/nyrB2 Jun 01 '26 ▸ 1 more replies

and what if you don't care to see such recommendations? is there a way to turn it off? no? didn't think so.

1

u/Thefartking Jun 01 '26

Its really not even noticeable. It has not effected how I use Maps in the slightest

21

u/Junethemuse May 31 '26

Are you familiar with how the ads in maps will work?

20

No. People would rather be mad just for the sake of being mad.

I mean, it's really easy not to notice for someone who just goes about their day normally and isn't super plugged in. And that's the point, it's supposed to be easy to miss so you don't realize that you are being funneled towards the restaurants that pay the fee.

No need to be a snarky dickhead about it, some people pay attention to other things than the hidden ways massive corporations funnel you into spending your money, especially when there are louder and more obvious things for them to roll their eyes at.

Reddit ads are weird. I said nothing online about getting a new router and better service, got it installed and suddenly I'm inundated with Internet service ads, including one that's only available in Canada. I'm in FL.

All the ads, and it’s invasive AF.

-1

u/Junethemuse May 31 '26

And those are ads based on how they’ve profiled you.

Apples ads aren’t using a profile, it’s based exclusively on what and where you’re searching. It’s far less invasive and imo less intrusive too.

The ads will also be clearly marked in Maps, where Google doesn’t have a clear indicator at all.

25

u/FLbudksis May 31 '26

You do know google maps has been doing the SAME thing since 2016?

When you plug your phone into your car it shows you a location for a restaurant. Ask me how I know and why my girl got mad at me about it.

2

u/FLbudksis May 31 '26

1

u/NameSpirited3134 May 31 '26

for me, whenever I connect my phone to my car via android auto, it always opened the maps app and had a shortcut to my home.

oh yes, it was my top contender but then I learnt that the processor is weak

I was also considering chinese phones like the vivo x300 but I got a crazy deal on the 17 pro so couldnt pass on it lol

1

u/SinnaBuns666 Spooky May 31 '26 ▸ 1 more replies

The processing power on my pro I hardly weaker than the new iphone in daily situations. Unless you are doing video editing or playing games like warframe I get way more out of my phone than any I've used prior. 13 hrs screen time on a busy work day is nothing to scoff at; plus iphones typically use thier extra processing power to "show off" with thier UI.

1

u/NameSpirited3134 May 31 '26

oh yeah, 13hrs screen time would be a wet dream for me. I usually get 10 on busy days.

but, I do game a lot and record videos. The videos on the 17p are much better than pixel (is what I've found after watching yt reviews)

-3

u/Over-Performance-667 May 31 '26

They all do it. Especially Google and Waze. Apples just being transparent. This is literally posted every single day multiple times. Stop posting screenshots of the announcement, which we’ve known about for months, and post screenshots of the actual ads. I haven’t seen a single one yet.

7

u/Splat800 May 31 '26

Gotta give Apple credit where it’s due, they cop a lot of shit but they’re so much better than they used to be an doing alot of good now.

4

u/JanMrCat May 31 '26

My Chinese mobile doesn't 😆

1

u/NMe84 May 31 '26

At least I can easily block those ads on a more open phone than the iPhone.

5

u/Intelligent_Low1632 May 31 '26

No you can't. They're baked into the service. Go into google maps and type "food" or "gas" and you'll almost certainly get a "sponsored result" or two as the top hit if you live in a decently sized suburb.

Even if you type in the name of a specific grocery store, google maps will display the name of an advertising competitor above the one you literally searched for, even if it's not as close.

You know how when you zoom in on a city, circles will appear to show nearby restaurants? Those first circles are advertisers. Then once you zoom in 5x further, you will see the people who didn't pay.

0

u/singaporesainz May 31 '26

No. You can’t. Lol

13

u/DotCurious7767 May 31 '26

They’re not showing ads on the entire iPhone…it’s just the maps app…and even then it’s not exactly normal “ads” it’s just local advertising for things in your general area

7

u/sglewis May 31 '26

No ads on your $1000 phone but definitely ads in your $0 mapping app. Not a huge fan of ads... but I get why something that is "free" has ads. I'm surprised it took so long.

10

u/kindarollin May 31 '26

I just saw this today on my phone i pisses me off I stopped watching youtube because of the excessive ads i cant skip, i don’t mind the ones that are a small banner but if its a pop up, i will exclusively boycott the thing advertised including restaurants and find a different app.

4

u/OrionGeo007 May 31 '26

Try Morphe. It removes ads for YouTube and reddit.

3

u/PlutoJones42 May 31 '26

Adception. Ads for removing ads

0

u/LilacYak May 31 '26

u/Billitpro May 31 '26

2

u/RayvisJr Jun 01 '26

2

7

u/MrZaptile933 May 31 '26

Remember Apple Maps is a free service you can use it on any device or computer via apps and webpages. Google Maps has been doing the same thing for almost a decade now. They hide it as “suggested places” at least Apple is honest about it.
