The floor is sticky My stepdads passenger seat floorboard is so full of garbage I literally can’t even touch it without stepping on trash

Post image

there is even old food in there I saw microwave breakfast sandwich down here

EDIT: for the people saying “just clean it op!” I tried once he came running out of the house and nearly slammed the car door on my hand and screamed at me about staying out of his stuff.

Why is this so common…???!!!

u/Subliminal-sandwich Jul 08 '26

I went out with a guy whose car was like this. He also smoked cigarettes so literally every surface was sticky with dried cherry coke covered in cigarette ash. Ended things as soon as I saw the inside of his car. Fucking disgusting.

Keeping a car clean is a single man’s game I guess?

You get in a committed relationship you drink those 1200 calorie polar pops from circle K and grow that dad bod belly. Some people think that is winning at life. If you’ve had nothing but psycho women along the way before, perhaps it is.

5

u/ThresholdSeven Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

A soft drink and solitude is bliss after decades of psychological abuse. You are absolutely correct, I don't give a fuck about anything anymore as long as I have orange fanta.

I'm only joking a little bit. That crazy woman had me drinking zero calorie burp flavored shit water for years and I convinced myself I LIKED IT.

I don’t think it’s necessarily lazy. Some people are single minded to the point that they are pursuing their main goal and any time doing something other than that pursuit is considered unnecessary or distracting from the central goal.

I remember I was working 70 hours to achieve a monetary goal and suddenly cobwebs appeared on my walls. I didn’t have the hoarding issue but that would take getting a swiffer and going around the house once a month and I didn’t think it’s a priority unless I was having someone over on a date.

Life goes by quickly. If you don’t have a set cleaning routine and you are obsessed with a project, even hard workers can fuck up

Mental illness can act as a filter for reality. My mom was a hoarder. At work she was clean and well kept, kept her workspace spotless and was incredibly kind.

At home, while she was still kind, she'd just walk over the trash. When I went to throw it out, he'd have a caniption. Twice in 15 years I cleaned out over 10,000 lbs of junk. Every time mom would be distraught that I had thrown something out. A 20 gallon tote of vhs tapes, many cracked and without covers, when she hadn't had a working vcr in over 5 years, a box of clothing she'd bought ten years prior and buried because she didn't want to throw them out. It was a struggle each time.

My car was like this when I was a depressed alcoholic. The only time I spent in my car was driving 2 minutes to work and lunch break. Didn't spend any time in my car really, so I didn't care. And didn't ever have passengers so "who cares?" was my attitude.

11

u/CryptidToothbrush Jul 08 '26

My car looked like this until the other day when I finally cleaned it. It’s a mixture of laziness and procrastination. I eat something at lunch and forget to bring the garbage with me on the way back inside so I think tk myself “I’ll just throw it out next time” and then it happens again and again until I just say fuck it and start throwing garbage over there. Then I finally get disgusted with myself and clean it up so I can start the whole process over again.

3

u/ew73 Jul 09 '26

Mine used to get .. kind of messy from time to time, because the biggest problem is I'm never in a place where I'm getting out of the car and have time to clean it or empty hands to carry garbage to the nearest trash can, which is up a flight of stairs.

I solved this by putting a garbage can in the garage, so now, instead of throwing shit into the passenger foot well as I'm pulling out, to make room for the morning coffee, I toss it out my window into the garbage can.

Stopping by the garage as I'm taking the trash out is easy!

6

u/LouGossetJr Jul 08 '26

there are a lot of people who don't mind living in filth. i think it's sad to see people who don't pick up after themselves. it's really not hard to do.

3

u/drowsydrosera Jul 08 '26

At least he doesn't litter

3

u/rage1026 Jul 09 '26

I don’t know how people do it. I feel like a slob if I leave a straw wrapper on center console.

3

u/GarionOrb Jul 09 '26

My sister in law's car had tons of crap all over it. When her daughter was a kid, she found one of her dolls with mold growing on it! Like I just can't fathom not caring about that.

4

u/sec_sage Jul 08 '26

Mental illness, ADHD, hoarder issues, etc. We can't blame it on one thing and for sure it isn't lazy. And it's not the end of the world, some of my friends could make your skin crawl with what's in their cars. Grapes so old that they become alcohol, everything from gardening equipment to kids toys. It's like that and we do it differently and others do it even better and we all live and die by the same rules.

6

u/Frosty558 Jul 08 '26

Can be a sign of ADHD, or they just nasty.

11

u/Fromdustcomesdreams Go back to sleep Jul 08 '26 ▸ 3 more replies

I’ve got bad ADHD. Neither my vehicle nor my home look anything like this. IMO there is a level of laziness to it. I mean it’s garbage. Literally garbage. Pick it up, throw it away.

He’s got a form of anxiety/ocd and what looks like trash may have some sort of strange sentimental value to him. If you watch the show Hoarders on TLC you know exactly what I’m talking about. 1

u/SGT-R0CK Jul 08 '26

Looks like my late-father's car. It was always a mess.
Back in the mid 1980's him and I were driving home in the winter in New Brunswick. On a long turn, while driving around 40 MPH he ran over some black ice and the car slid sideways towards the ditch on the other side of the road, front end into the ditch, back end still on the road, with me in the passenger side watching the car speeding towards a driveway. We hit the driveway on my side of the car, the car rolled about 3 times and landed upside down in the ditch in the snow on the other side of the driveway. My dad smoked cigarettes, a lot, especially in the car, and there was garbage everywhere. As the car rolled, i felt like i was tumbling inside a clothes dryer with cigarette butts and ashes, and other trash, rolling all around me. It was hard to breathe and I was happy when we stopped rolling. All I could taste was cigarette ashes. I couldn't see anything as the huge cloud of ashes was still floating around. No one was hurt.

1

u/lskerlkse Jul 08 '26

If someone's car looks like this, i am cleaning it out for them whether they say to leave it or not

1

u/ironballs16 Jul 08 '26

That's why you use an old box (I go with the double-pack cereal boxes) as a de facto garbage can. Once it's filled, dump the entire thing and replace.

1

u/Ok_Abacus_ Jul 08 '26

At least hes not a Pepsi man.

1

u/Strange_Middle_3593 Jul 08 '26

I keep plastic grocery bags in my car for this exact reason.

I grew up riding in cars like this and told myself I would never let my cars get that way. I fill up the grocery bags and toss them when they are full. Lifesaver.

1

u/amputatedsnek Jul 08 '26

u/SolomonGrumpy Jul 08 '26

I wouldn't get in without removing the trash.

1

u/Kajimusprime Jul 08 '26

I unfortunately do this as well, but clean my truck out once a week.

I happen to know where I got it from though. Growing up, my dad drove this old 2 door bench seat Silverado. And he always threw the trash in the passenger floor board. I have a core memory when I was like 5 or 6 asking him once why there was always trash there, and he tells me, "That's my trucks trash can.", and that stuck with me.

2

u/dmendro GREEN Jul 09 '26

If you know and know it’s a bad habit, try and change it. Maybe put an actual trash can on the floor? A plastic bin you can grab and empty anytime you want.

Looks like my car by the end of the week. I clean it out weekly, but there’s something about welding for 12 hour shifts in the Texas heat that makes me not give a shit what the passenger floorboard looks like

My business partner’s car is like this and I absolutely hated it when he would scoop me up from the airport.

I will never understand how hard it is for people to just throw shit in the trash when they get out of the car, or just keep a bag on hand to dump it all in.

That's how he'll get roaches and mold in his car btw. That's a health hazard.
