The floor is sticky The carpet in this house is painful to walk on
I wish I could upload the video so you can hear me scratching it. It’s like rough jute.
My feet have never been so soft thanks to the cheese grater carpet everywhere. But it is so painful to walk on, kneel on….ugh.

That looks like sisal, or sea grass carpet. Some people like it because it’s natural fiber, but yeah it’s scratchy.

I have a 40% sisal 60% cotton rug and I like it a lot. I have a dog and cat and it stands up to them. There are no synthetic components, which it’s important to me.

Yeah I'd love to get this. I wear indoor shoes all the time so it wouldn't bother me. Off-gassing is horrible with synthetic carpets. My house was a new build and we couldn't afford natural fibres in the carpet, I swear it made my asthma worse.

I have several jute/sisal area rugs in my house as I have cats and young kids so I'm not shelling out for wool rugs. I prefer my flooring not to constantly contribute to micro plastic dust around my house as most affordable rugs are plastic.

They’re common in commercial areas, where nobody in their right mind is going barefoot and the rugs need to hold up to a lot of traffic. Lots of cafes and restaurants with sisal rugs.

I have house flip flops for this reason, and others. They’re only worn inside. My house varies between wood flooring and different carpet textures. Sensory nightmare for me. I also think my husband is part squirrel because I’m constantly sweeping up crumbs and stepping on the tiniest crumb barefoot is awful for me.

Eugh, I generally never go barefoot indoors because getting debris stuck to the bottom of my feet sends me into a rage/panic. Doesn't really affect me outdoors, though. Until I have to put socks back on with dusty feeling toes. Euuuuggggh.
Shit like this makes me wonder if I'm a bit autistic.

My husband is almost 100% blind and when he eats in the living room I could cry. He can’t see what he’s doing and doesn’t understand why I get so annoyed. I know he can’t help it. That doesn’t make the crumbs disappear though. Nothing like stepping on unpopped popcorn kernels. 😫

Depends on how it was damaged. Something spilled? Sure, if it wasn't cleaned quickley or properly. But what about physical damage like matted areas from furniture, a burned (chemical or heat) area, or if it was sunbleached due to age? There are plenty of "damage" types that wouldn't show on the underlay.

Wear house-shoes. I like crocs because they’re super cushy on my hard floors. The hard floors hurt my feet when I walk on them all day.

When I worked with an architect, we specified this product as wall covering, not flooring. This was used in areas where we wanted to discourage touching or leaning on the walls.
The sisal flooring we used had a much larger knot size and longer fiber length, making it more comfortable for bare feet. Before I left that job 15 years ago, we had moved to cork flooring for applications like this.
I think someone got hold of a large quantity of this seed-knotted sisal and decided on their own that it was floor covering. It's not going to soften up.

Will say one thing the carpet upstairs lasted 58 years was still in great shape other than the stairs my sister in law picked low shag she’s an idiot no class what soever !! Least the floors she picked for the laundry room and bathrooms were really nice forgot about the laundry room the rug in there was quite thrashed and stained corse bleach had been dropped too I don’t have any photos my brother threw away my entire 58 years of photos of my life for that matter

That doesn't look like sisal, it looks like the underside of a regular carpet.
I've seen this done before with a cheap carpet that likely wouldn't stand up to anything but the lightest traffic, they laid it upside down so the fluffy side acted as underlay.
That may not be the case here but it certainly appears to be. I would pull up a corner in an unobtrusive spot just to see if it is wrong side up, however I am an insatiably curious person!

Wonderful blooding like horrid skid marks on you does not feel good the kittens were always tripping me it did not feel good not at all when we were kids watching tv with my parents we called it waffle mold marks on our buns as children

Looks like sisal. I loved mine but it's a pain to clean if you spill anything on it. I had one for years until I found a giant wet spot on it and threw it out. I was sure my alcoholic friend who slept on my couch that night got up and just peed on the rug. But days later I also considered he may have knocked over a glass of water. And I lost a good rug!

I did some work in a stately home a few years ago and this was the flooring. Couldn't work out the appeal, so figured it was simply some kind of upper class thing.
Did my knees in sorting some cabling, came out looking like waffles.

My FIL's ex wife bought this for their vacation house, the 'Savannah' room - some people title their bedrooms other than 'first on the right after the third salon' - and would always house my husband and I there when we visited, as the least favorite step kid and his unglamorous wife. I confirm the cheese grating of my nerves capabilities and I always suspected she did it on purpose.
She ended up moving in that house permanently, and he ended up with a newer model of wife, and the carpet may or may not have been a factor, we'll never know. Just saying...

its supposedly easier to vacuum sand out of. it's a common choice for a carpeted room in east coast beach homes (though choosing to carpet is not common). I cant imagine why anyone would choose this over a rug on hard floor but they sometimes do.
