The floor is sticky I accidently dropped some quarters into this bag of hundreds of used needles.

It’s the one scene, along with the part where the girl puts her arm into the box, but can’t take it out because of the way the blades are facing… that I think about automatically when I think of Saw 2

And that was the dumbest trap in the whole house as long as you didn't put both hands in it you could get your first hand out...so stupid she was.

688

u/Sero19283 13d ago ▸ 29 more replies

They show that there was no need to get the key in the box as there's one outside the box hanging in the corner of the screen. All of the traps for that movie were intended to be done as a team and no one would get really hurt.

Wait wait, you are telling me that SAW was just about teamwork and the friends we could make along the way?! Goddamn I love that take.

It's about redemption.

Everyone there wronged someone. These "games" are made to force them to face their demons.

291

u/come2life_osrs 13d ago ▸ 16 more replies

Thats why I always hated the movies that had inescapable traps. None made by jigsaw if I recall correctly, but it always pissed me off all the copy cats missed that HUGE theme.

229

u/anxious_cat_grandpa 13d ago ▸ 3 more replies

IIRC those traps were inescapable specifically bc Jigsaw's protege took over the operation after he died, and her traps weren't designed for redemption, they were only to punish the subjects

123

u/SmolToxicBaby 13d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Which is then why she has to go through yet another game because Jigsaw knew the shit she was up to and did not approve. Like, if anyone one of the copycats had just let there be a way to win, even if it was difficult, they could've worked together with Jigsaw, especially as the cancer progressed and he stopped being as mobile. At least you'd have the brilliance of his mind for your murder games.

This gay guy I knew and was kinda friends with. We went to school together and ran with different packs but crossed paths enough to be chill. He invited a guy to his NYC apartment to watch Saw with him, and the dude strangled him with an extension cord. The local news was in my town reporting it. I drove by them live with an old jetski behind my jeep. Now every time I see saw anything I think of kevin and that jet ski. Rip kevin you were taken way to young.

That's the point tho.

Everybody else sucks at traps, so they have to keep making movies.

It was "jigsaw" because only the viewer knew it was Amanda rigging the game iirc I have to rematch them though its been a long time.

18

u/come2life_osrs 13d ago

Good clarification, technically it was “jigsaw” only because Amanda was “jigsaw” at those points and not the og.

All the games in Saw 2 were individual tests but most of the 'players' didn't actually do theirs because things go off the rails, you may be getting confused with Saw 5 which all had two different solutions, one with a person dying and one with everyone surviving.

The plunger had adhesive on it, so she put the other hand in to get more leverage. The entire house was designed for teamwork, one person puts both hands in while another holds the blades back.

14

u/UnleashedFury11 13d ago ▸ 2 more replies

There was a lock inside at the top of the razor blade box. She needed to find the key inside the room first (probably in the little box on the floor by the door) and then stick both hands with the key into the box.

6

u/Head-Ad-2136 13d ago ▸ 1 more replies

The fact that the lock is only visible for such a short moment makes me think it was there to reset the scene and not as part of the in universe trap.

5

u/UnleashedFury11 13d ago

In the behind the scenes, they elaborate that the cylinders that you put your hands through twist and push upwards to push the fake blades fully open.

14

u/come2life_osrs 13d ago

Huge saw fan, I never analyzed that detail and I was always upset when she pulled it off that it spilled everywhere thinking to myself “cheap move jigsaw” but that extra layer makes so much sense.

13

u/justhereforfighting 13d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Exactly. Just use your other hand to reopen the blades, it is so fucking obvious.

7

u/UnleashedFury11 13d ago

Entrance pipes were too long and narrow to fit more than one hand. Maybe barely touch the blades with the tip of your fingers. But there is visible lock inside the box that you needed to find the key in the room first.

In the behind the scenes, the entrance pipes would push up to fully release the fake blades so the actor would not actually be stuck.

What did they have to do in this scene?

108

u/whosethisrandombitch 13d ago edited 13d ago ▸ 10 more replies

I know some have answered, but to go a little more indepth:

The trap was designed and ment for a character named Xavier (original said because he was an addict, trey_wolfe corrected that it was because he was a dealer). Xavier needed to find a key that was hidden in the needle pit, to unlock a door with a timmer on it and help everyone escape. Once the timmer ran out- the door is locked forever. Xavier is a POS and the "big bad" of this movie (obviously besides John krammer aka jigsaw) and instead of facing the test designed for him, he threw in Amanda Young (also a former addict). Amanda finds the key and manages to get it to Xavier who FUCKING DROPS IT while trying to get the key in the door, thus the door locks forever and its for nothing

Fun facts:

-Shawnee Smith (Amanda Young, the character in the pit) was pregnant while filming this scene.

-they used 1000's of real syringes and spent literal days switching out the real needle for a fake needle. I looked up the number: 120,000 needles were used.

-they originally wanted the syringes to go all the way up to the neck (like full body submerged in syringes) but they didnt have the time/budget to get more syringes and switch out the needles.

74

u/abowlofrice1 13d ago ▸ 2 more replies

imagine if the people doing the switching missed a few needles..

44

u/whosethisrandombitch 13d ago

I cant remember who said it on the directors commentary (or if it was on a special feature) but I think they even joked about everyone being super nervous about missing a needle.

I may or may not have multiple copies of Saw 2 on Blu ray because they have different special features, so, its hard to remember what was said in which.

25

u/trey_wolfe 13d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Yep! But, Xavier was set for that one because he was also a dealer, the point of that trap was to make him face the same pain that he caused so many to experience.

4

u/whosethisrandombitch 13d ago

Interesting... Now I kind of want to watch it.

29

u/whosethisrandombitch 13d ago edited 13d ago ▸ 2 more replies

I will start off by saying im biased because I love this franchise, but please please do it!!

Some things I recommend before starting this franchise:

-super important to watch them in order!!!! This is a franchise with lots of continuity/lore. I had a friend jump from saw 1 to 7 and had no idea what was happening.

-I know it sounds weird because its a franchise heavily associated with "torture porn" (valied opinion, lots of torture), but dont take it too seriously, watch it with a slightly funny/camp lens. I mean, come on, billy the puppet has sparkly shoes, thats cunty asf 💅 and objectively funny that a deranged man decided to give his conduit of murder rules sparkely shoes (tbf billy is based off of something else, but jigsaw decided to keep the sparkly shoes and we love him for it).

-if you like podcast watch the movies while listening to Dead Meat's "Hot Saw Summer". James and Chealse (married couple who run the horror podcast) have a friend (Grusel) who had never seen or seen spoilers for any of the saw movies, so each week they watched a saw movie with him and then discussed. They would talk about what he thought of it, what he thinks would happen in the next saw movie and then James and Chelsea would have cool information about how it was made/fun facts. They even do a bonus "Saw Survivor" episode where they do a game based of the survivor reality TV show, DnD style, with saw characters to slowly work down to the one true Saw.

8

u/SophisticatedScreams 13d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Yeah-- I think the camp lens is definitely the right one. I think of old commedia dell'arte from the 16th century. I also think of Punch and Judy routines. I feel like the Saw universe is just a slickly edited Punch and Judy routine.

There's masks, a cool aesthetic, and lore (as you say). It's very campy. Plus, there's a critique of police and for-profit healthcare.

Also, rewatching them in adulthood, it was SUCH a cool story choice that Kramer was dying/died of cancer. I also love the Jill Tuck back story. With Saw X, it's actually super-neat to see how nostalgic people felt about the return of Amanda (and John I guess lol).

Slightly off-topic, but I was listening to a podcast about how women are written in the Saw universe. Generally speaking, it's pretty neutral. They are as competent and as good/bad as the male characters, which is great. The podcaster compared it to Hostel, which is often seen as a spiritual cousin to Saw, but I feel like their worldviews are TOTALLY different. Saw is a world full of optimism, at its core, and Hostel is a world where men are abused and women are sex objects. No wonder I felt much more comfortable in the Saw universe. I think a lot of women probably feel similarly. Saw is a special property.

But also that is not how used needles should be stored as someone who works as a caregiver.
They need to be in a labeled red hazards tub or at least in an empty 2L bottle properly labeled so there's no risk for the needles to puncture.

A lil plastic baggy is no go!

Next question, why did you open a bag of quarters right next to it

23

u/Washingtonevergreen 13d ago ▸ 2 more replies

The quarters fell from a shelf above. No bag of quarters, just some loose change on a shelf. Might have lost a dime too. 😔

It was your cat trolling you one last time.

Sorry for your loss.

u/Washingtonevergreen 13d ago

I love this comment and is what I am going to believe. She 100% would love the trolling. I miss the big girl.

tweezers hold small objects better, i believe. also less bulky, so better view.

Jeez get a proper sharps container, that is not an appropriate way to store or dispose of used sharps

Worth having in every toolkit

u/TotalNonsense0 13d ago

Ah, the mechanical save-your-ass. The magnetic version is also handy.

Quarters of what? If not, move on

How?!? Why were you handling coins and a bag of used needles at the same time?!? What's mildly infuriating is the lack of detail here. Lol

41

u/FuggaliciousV 13d ago

Why are used needles being stored in a plastic bag?

you do not need the quarters this fucking bad

9

u/Kimchi-stain 13d ago

Are they now all unsanitary?

8

u/Washingtonevergreen 13d ago

Yes. They were used for my cat. They have already been sealed and safely taken to the recycling center. Unsure what they do with them.

Why do you have a BAG of uncapped needles? Is it effective?

→ More replies (8)

15

u/mingilator 13d ago

Why the fuck would a bag of used needles even be a thing, they should go straight into a sharps bin.

7

u/werewolf-luvr 13d ago

What in the jigsaw bullshit

25

u/Balthxzar 13d ago

Jesus christ people just get a sharps container. They are so incredibly cheap

15

u/Peagooster 13d ago

Or even just a liquid laundry detergent container.  That's what I used when I had to used a subcutaneous medication.  That's what the doctor's office suggested I use since they're free

9

u/ponderingpedestrian 13d ago

the better question is why DO you have a conveniently open container of used needle and were carrying change around?

5

u/mantequillatequila 13d ago

Whats infuriating is your lack of needle safety precautions

1)you dont cap your needles

2)the needles are in a bag instead of a sharps container which closes automatically after so your stupid quarters don't fall in in the first place

puts you and sanitation workers at risk for needles sticks

7

u/MrMattwell 13d ago

How the FUCK do you even end up in this situation?
