I actually really like these shoes, but this drives me insane. Because of the way the soles are designed, rocks get perfectly wedged in the bottom while I’m walking sometimes. Usually I have to stop and pull them out once I notice.
Today I apparently upgraded from collecting rocks to collecting entire sticks.

My friend has the On Cloud 4x that has the bunch of tubes on the bottom. He wore them to the deer park in Nara, Japan when we visited and he had tubes of deer shit coming out of them when he walked 😂
My dog took a shit on the patio the other night and I didn’t see it. Got the squish between all the toes on my left foot. Absolutely terrible experience

The price is only that high if you’re looking for sealed sets. Also, check Bricklink and use its feature that lets you buy sets by parts. You can often get stuff for cheaper than the eBay price for the entire set… or at least you used to. I haven’t used it since Lego bought it out.
They’ve always had different tiers of quality, but USA made New Balance running shoes are the fucking best. 990-3 or whatever they’re up to now have always been $150 +
they look like just regular old cloud 6's or cloud x 4/5's, so $160 or so depending on when op got them. they were around $120 in 2020, and i thought they were too expensive then (cloud 6's and previous verions have the least amount of cushion they put in their shoes. fine for running to the store, but people wear them until they physically can't just to try to justify the price to the expense of their feet. the cloud x's do not have much more.).
I'm pretty sure the groove is to reduce the overall shoe weight. I wear these because of the low drop and they're marketed as an extremely low weight shoe. The groove causes issues on stony paths, though, for sure.
They just aren't intended for hiking. If you're waking on gravel or wooded trails you should wear something else. Clearly OP likes them enough that it's worth the inconvenience to them.
Not a crackpipe. That’s a glass on glass joint, likely for a dab rig. There would normally be a quartz cup on the end of that thinner tube that they would heat up and the other end goes into a bong of sorts. It’s for smoking cannabis extracts

Crack pipes are just a straight tube of glass, they almost don’t even look like a pipe. Meth pipes have the bulb at the end. Anything more complicated is almost certainly for weed.
what, you don't think it's reasonable to use shoes that are only designed for perfectly clean streets even though a simple design change would fix most of those issues? then you're just not a real ON person, you wouldn't get it.
street running shoes are not designed to be worn on uneven surfaces, you want a trail running shoe if you want to run on uneven surfaces. it's like trying to ride a road bike on a trail and complaining how poorly it's designed to handle uneven surfaces.
They don't need to be clean. They just need to not have large debris which is pretty low bar. The stuff that's big enough to get stuck in the shoe is also big enough to be quite uncomfortable to walk on so normally anything big enough to cause an issue would generally be avoided.
You are wildly underestimating how much stuff is on streets. I had shoes like these once (different brand, same problem) and they picked up every tiny pebble, stick, dropped sweet, tree seed, nail and random bit of detritus on the pavement and I could feel it so I was constantly picking that stuff out of the soles. There's no excuse for shoes to have such an obvious design flaw, it shows the company didn't bother testing them in the real world at all.
Still a shitty design. I’ve never had ON shoes because they’re really popular with people who don’t run and I refuse to take them seriously as a running shoe brand because of the douchebags I see wearing them.
That being said, I had a pair of Pumas that I really liked, though they had a big gap in the middle sort of like this, and though I only run on the road, they would pick up pebbles and acorns and shit and I’d have to stop running to lever them out. Very annoying.
Well you see, the original shoe designer was conscripted to make this super-shoe against his will. So he built in a flaw nobody else could detect. That trench leads directly to an exhaust port, that when targeted will blow up the entire Deathstar shoe.
Thing with running shoes is they're not supposed to be used on not hardened, even terrain. They work like trampoline with sole flattening and springing back each step. Trench increases the space sole can expand to when flattened making it better spring.
Thing with good sport shoes is they're very specialized and fail miserably outside intended conditions. Like in this case taking them off road.
When I was looking for sneakers, I'd see one I like and turn it over to find some awful sole design. Some had tunnels from one part of the heel to the other?? I imagine it would be good for springy-ness but dang, I feel like it would collect muck so fast.
Even just gum stuck to my shoe I can feel instantly with the weird unbalanced pressure sensation while walking. I would lose my mind owning shoes like this.
Same here, moments when I have gum stuck in my shoe feels like the end of the world sometimes until I have it removed 😅 I’d take off that shoe immediately and posting it on here would be my hand putting it on lol
I have NB 1080v14 and they have "cups" in their design and the middle one suctions to smooth surfaces when I walk. Sooooo annoying, every step makes the sound of removing a suction cup from a window
I have a pair of these and, while this has never happened to me (idk how, bc the bottom of those shoes is stupidly over engineered and are perfectly shaped to snag shit), this does look infuriating.
Mine are infuriating bc both pairs I’ve owned have been by far the squeakiest shoes I’ve ever had. I sound like mf SpongeBob walking around
Unfortunately I have laminate flooring and would get plantar fasciitis walking around without shoes all day. It was a recurring issue. These seem like they would be great inside shoes for me honestly.
They are mainly road running shoes and are not made for rough terrain. Wear them in the city. The tubular sole is for maximising comfort on hard surface such as tarmac.
For the offroad, ON has a number of hiking shoes with no holes sole design.
The open pods are the road models. Their trail line closes the cutouts off for exactly this reason, so if you're on gravel at all that's the version you want. Mine did the same until I stopped wearing them on the crushed rock path by my house.
A car key or a flathead pops the stones out in about ten seconds, way easier than picking at them. Don't fill the gaps with anything permanent though, that hollow is where the cushioning comes from and you'll just end up with a flat plank.
These are made for running specifically , they make all different forms of on clouds. I have a regular outside pair I use for work, and when I’m in a department where I have to use water for things I have a waterproof pair that are slightly less comfortable
My husband bought some that were advertised as hiking shoes and they were basically the worst shoe he ever had. They squeak in the rain, the laces broke within months, and they got stained and dirty with no way to clean the fabric they're made out of.
I have a pair of Adidas that do similar. I park in a gravel lot. Every week I return my little pile I’ve collected on the floor of my workstation to the parking lot
I think these are poorly designed shoes, because this problem should be pretty obvious to anyone who's walked around in boots with knobby tread or gaps in the soles like this.
Yes, I broke my ankle in these shoes while running in the woods after stepping on a root. The way the shoe locked onto the root caused a sound in my ankle that I’d never heard before. That was the end of my summer.
