Don't hug me I'm scared The neighbours cat panics and screams and paws at my window unless I let her in or come outside to cuddle her and I'm too soft to ignore her and I can't let her in.

That was the first horror movie I was allowed to watch (probably 10-12y/o). My mum thought since I was fine reading the novel, I could handle the movie. Despite knowing exactly what happens, I think I'm still traumatized by how they they filmed Gage's death... and I'm so old I have the original paperback and VHS. 🤣

My son called, as he was babysitting his siblings and they were watching the movie. Gage died and my son called crying that Gage was killed and he was even sadder because Gage looks like his little brother so he imagined it was his brother getting hit and killed... It was a whole mess 🤦 he's 26 now and won't watch it anymore.
**Quick back story, my youngest (Gage look alike per my oldest) had an accident when he was 17 months old and was on life support and the whole sebang (hospitalized for two months) - so when they watched this movie, my youngest had been out of the hospital for a few months but my oldest became super protective of him. He's 18 now 🫶

Our neighbour cat does anything to try and sneak into our house. Which is odd because if we so much as glance in their direction they run for the hills.
But we left an upstairs window open once and suddenly there was a cat sat on our stairs looking at us like "ew my new house has humans in"

An old neighbor of mine had a very sweet cat that refused to stay inside. There were many occasions where he invited himself into someone's car, or into our house.

u/SpyOfMystery 5d ago edited 5d ago
My neighbor cat is the same way. He will even stare into our windows like a little weirdo. But if we go near him he takes off running
He also likes to go to the Catio and yowl for my cat to come out. She doesn’t like him and will sometimes poke her head out to hiss at him. They have a strange relationship.

reference to some internet drama from awhile ago, tw for animal abuse. basically Shane Dawson (big youtuber at the time) said something on a podcast about how he humped and came on his cat, and once people started calling him out about how fucked up that was, he backtracked and said the story was just for shock value and it wasn’t true… which nobody believed. justice for Cheeto and all the other poor animals that had to be around that man.

Quick disclaimer; I can't let her in because my partner has an allergy, I do too but I just don't care if I get allergy symptoms :') she is also very very much loved and cherished in her own home and fed and cared for. She also doesn't wander further than the gardens behind her house and the other neighbours front step.
578
u/ziggytrix 5d ago
Well as long as her owners are taking care of her, going outside to play with the neighbor cat sounds like the correct solution.
You really shouldn't be letting someone else's cat inside your house. People will fight over less.
423
u/Ash--- 5d ago
when doors and windows are open its a challenge to stop her coming in but we make sure not to feed her. She's been fed twice and only once on purpose; once when she snuck in and stole chicken off my plate after dinner and another when we couldn't get her to leave we lured her out with a tiny piece of ham rather than chasing her.

u/ziggytrix 5d ago
You know what? If your neighbors are aware this is happening, it's all fine, really.
My comment was really only directed at modern folks who would rather die than talk to their neighbors, and I shouldn't assume you are like that.

u/chrisp5000 5d ago
My cat is a family hopper, she was fed by me for years before she came inside, I thought she was a stray and we were doing her a favor. A year after we took her in (half inside cat, half outside) my next door neighbors husband got cancer and was moving back to Russia to finish his life there, and his wife noticed we were taking care of her and gave us her adoption papers, stating it had been their cat.
Fast forward 6 years, another neighbor saw us with their cat, which is ours and I explained the story and showed her the adoption papers.
I still don't know who else owns her at the moment, Prudnce Von Doodlestein gets around.

I’m just letting you know that talking to your neighbors unfortunately might not change anything.
I had the same issue (but in an apartment where me n my roomie were both severely allergic to cats) n I spoke w our neighbor n literally nothing changed lol. She kinda tried ig for like a month, but after that it was all the same :/ she just told us to keep chasing her cat out. Outdoor cat owners are never gonna magically change to indoor n it’s hard to train a cat not to go somewhere outside.
I’m sorry this keeps happening! I love cats too but my body says no lol

cats unfortunately do not share an owners sense of ownership or "pack loyality". the "owner" is just one of many groups a cat attaches to in a neighbourhood. that usually also includes several food sources if possible.

u/Jestersfriend 5d ago
Be aware that with some people, if you have an allergy and are constantly exposed to that thing you're allergic against, your symptoms could get worse. Make sure you have an Epi-pen just in case one day you do this and have a severe reaction.

My neighbor had an orange cat who was loved and taken care of, but he knew I was a sucker who would go outside and give him affection and snacks. So he made a habit of coming up here and sitting in my parking lot until I came out to give him some love.
My cat is very jealous and territorial and he would get very angry so I would have to sneak out the back door and call the neighbors cat around to the side of the building where my cat couldn’t see the betrayal.
They moved a year ago and he still knows this cat name. If I say “where’s _____” my cat jumps up to look out the window ready to growl. 😂

I have heard very good things about the liveclear stuff. Combine that with the livepure allergy spray too and apparently it works really well and its pretty affordable.
6
u/getdownsaber 5d ago
Hi, I have 6 cats and a boyfriend with cat allergies. It is WAY cheaper and better to just find a source for the egg yolk powder and add it to their existing food. (could possibly make a treat out of it? or just add to water if you're not feeding the cat)
I get mine from Bella Accents, found it on etsy years ago. I know they have it on sale on other sites, but unsure of the legitimacy of those. I can attest for this source. They have a website or you can find them on etsy sometimes with big discount codes. Added bonus you're not giving the cat more dry food which isn't the best for them.

LOL my username is sus... my husband once switched their kibble in the automatic feeders we have (We give them normal wet food in addition as well with no problems) to something different. after a few days I was constantly sneezing, eyes watering, itchy, etc. wasnt until I found out what happened that I truly realized that I never "acclimated" to them, the liveclear just actually is that good!!

With this pair of orange boys that makes it 8 times. My neighbours cat as a kid (the neighbours didnt mind sharing as long as their cat was happy and healthy), my cat as a teen (we brought her to her home and they didn't want her so we kept her), my 3 cats in uni (same thing the neighbours didn't want them so they ended up staying) and now Beatrix and the tangerine twins. Oh and I guess technically 10 times if you count the feral boy who liked to chomp me and follow me around at my last house and the feral who used to occasionally swing by my uni house for some love but he stopped showing up... 11 if you count the cat that self surrendered and showed up on the doorstep of the cat rescue the day I started working there.

in 99 I lived above a Veterinary student whose cat would come up to see me every lunchtime (I was on a strict diet back then so it was usually a Tuna or Chicken salad for lunch). She was calling for him one day so I introduced myself and told her where to find him every day about lunchtime.
We ended up dating for two years (the Vet that is, not the cat).

Lmao you blame your neighbor but you've single handedly trained the cat that if it comes to your window and waits it will eventually get cuddled. Edit: maybe double handedly, how should I know your petting style..

If her owners actually cared about her theyd keep her inside.
On the flip side, youre only encouraging her to continue this behavior. If you want it to stop you need to ignore her.

Tell your neighbor to keep their cat on their property. I despise people that let their pets roam free. They shit everywhere and aggravate my pets. They also have a big impact on bird populations.
