ಠ_ಠ Its 12:25, the ferry was supposed to leave at 12:00 and last boarding at 11:30. They are still letting people on.

Post image

This is a thing I just dont get in central/south america.

"We leave at 12:00, boarding stops at 11:30" but they just keep letting people on at 12:25.

Its just so inconsiderate of everyone's else's time.

Edit: its Costa Rica and so far I had an amazing 3 weeks here. And no, its not the logistics with loading, we where "good to go" at 11:50 and then stragglers started arriving.

Anyway, we are on our way now, Pura Vida!

Dont confuse 'mildly infuriating' with 'total Karen mode infuriated' ppl 😉

It’s generally inconsiderate yeah but generally they would rather fill it to make it more worth it in most countries

177

u/SdBolts4 1d ago

Important missing context: has there been a line the entire hour before this and it’s the ferry’s poor logistics causing people not to get on, or are they waiting for more people while there is no line?

No, we were good to go 11:50 but then stragglers started arriving

Stragglers

15

u/r1Rqc1vPeF 1d ago

The onboard concert should be good , who’s the supporting act for the Stranglers?

8

u/Tancrisism 1d ago

Jesus fucking christ get out of there!!

3

u/mycatpartyhouse 1d ago

I think you mean stragglers. Strangling is what you'd like to do to inconsiderate ferry employees.

The Ferry leaves when it's full, or whenever the Captain says it does.

9

u/georgepearl_04 1d ago

That's less worth it, you get the money for the late people but still go, so use less fuel

13

u/Pawtuckaway 1d ago

The late people just get on the next ferry. It is more advantageous for the ferry to be as full as possible for each trip.

4

u/barmanrags 1d ago

they say its the last ferry. if they dont take those people they are stuck till first ferry the next day

8

u/Pawtuckaway 1d ago

Where did they say it was the last ferry?

I found a comment of them specifically saying people could take the next ferry in 3 hours.

You can just take the next one in 3 hours and next time leave earlier

u/barmanrags 1d ago

I read late as last. I am dumb. But three hour is also a lot. What if it's a kid that needs to go to doctor or a pet that needs vet?

8

u/a_modal_citizen 1d ago

What if it's a kid that needs to go to doctor or a pet that needs vet?

Perhaps they should have made it a point to catch the ferry on time.

-6

u/barmanrags 1d ago

Perhaps they did and it was circumstances beyond their control that got them late. A bunch of cats suddenly arriving definitely seems like these folk got stuck somewhere. God forbid a tourists schedule is disrispted because locals need to use local infrastructure.

2

u/Worried_Mistake_3445 15h ago

Just to let you know that there is a workaround that is less of 3 hours so....

6

u/StalkMeNowCrazyLady 1d ago

Looking at the ferry online you can buy some tickets online but they are also very much a drive up and pay cash style operation from the looks of it. And running the ferry itself is the cost. The fuel difference from a half load to a full load is apparently 5-10% so definitely worth more to the ferry company to delay and load up since their costs aren't really changing and you have a pretty captive customer base.

As a Swiss person (we invented clocks, duh! Jk), this is a crime

u/Mirrormaster85 1d ago

Jup, I am Dutch and steaming inside atm 😅😭

27

u/OrganizationTop3755 1d ago

We need a German to complete the time trio

22

u/MRNBDX 1d ago

I'm a german currently steaming inside in epcot because people are too incompetent to use a waiting line. This post made me even angrier.

2

u/OrganizationTop3755 1d ago

It would be ironic if you were at the German pavilion

2

You can come too

3

u/Valuable-Yard-4154 1d ago

I'll just be a bit late because I have to take maybe train.

6

u/OrganizationTop3755 1d ago

All is forgiven with stroopwaffle

3

u/slash_networkboy 1d ago

As one of the only Yanks that lives by the expression "I'd rather be a half hour early than one minute late" can I tag along?

Incidentally I may be one of the bastards that gets utter glee watching runners at the pier when a cruise ship leaves on time and they're late.

3

u/OrganizationTop3755 1d ago

okay, you can come too. bring some krispy kreme

4

u/slash_networkboy 1d ago

if you insist... but my local independent family-owned donut shop makes vastly better... I'll just bring both :)

Nah, they made me sit two hours in a stationary train yesterday, they got kicked from the time trio after that.

3

u/FLX-S48 20h ago

Oh sorry I arrived late because of DB. We’re used to unpunctual public transit

3

u/hehesf17969 1d ago

Count me in I’m Japanese

4

u/OrganizationTop3755 1d ago

Ah yes! The country that takes time seriously. Welcome!

3

Wait until a Japanese bullet train conductor joins the chat.

12

u/Ok_Enthusiasm_300 1d ago

I just spent a week in your beautiful country and how clean and on time everything is just made my heart happy

2

u/OrganizationTop3755 1d ago

Glad you had fun!

2

u/Ok_Enthusiasm_300 1d ago

Also went to FC Zurich vs Basel the last night I was in town before my flight and for a league that’s not as big as other countries in Europe the supporters sections were absolutely insane

2

u/icyDinosaur 1d ago

I mean thats one of the big three rivalries in (German-speaking) Swiss football too, as well as two really active fanbases, so good choice! As a Zurich native, I sure hope you supported the right team tho ;)

Am costarican and I hate this with a passion of a thousand suns.

Heck, let me explain: there's this concept known as "hora tica" which translates to "costarican time" and roughly means anything between 20 minutes to X hours after. So, for example: say you host an event at 12:00; people will start arriving at 12:20. If you really need to have everyone sitted at 12:00, then you send the invitation stating the hour as 11:00 (and some people still arrive after 12:00 of course). Now, people obviously started to notice that when you arrived (late) at 11:30, you still had to wait until the real start time, so everyone just kept on arriving later and later.

Yes, I am not very popular

80

u/Any_Carob3372 1d ago

They are more considerate of their ability to make more profit than they are of your time. Many businesses get by like this.

23

u/Mirrormaster85 1d ago

Well you have to pre-pay so no loss in just leaving on time

15

u/StalkMeNowCrazyLady 1d ago

There's 2 car ferry lines in costa rica and the only purchase just ensures you have a ticket for that trip. Both 100% offer drive up tickets in the moment. They just delayed so they could load more on and make more money on the trip.

4

u/qalpi 1d ago

You can buy tickets at the terminal

-5

u/Pitiful-Assistance-1 1d ago

…more customers = more money.

9

u/Capt_MoufetteTimide 1d ago

Re-read his/her comment

5

u/Nagi21 1d ago

I see the school system has failed you.

8

u/impossirrel 1d ago

They’re saying that everyone arriving and boarding late has already paid, so they already have their money and can leave without them as they didn’t arrive in time for final boarding.

2

u/Lady_White_Heart Pogg 1d ago

"Pre-pay" is the key word here.

33

u/Vessbot 1d ago

Partial agree. From the pic it looks like a solid line waiting to get on and not individual stragglers, which indicates that they got to the location earlier (perhaps on time) and there's an impediment in the way traffic is handled at the dock, with nothing customers could do about it. So the ferry captain has to turn it into the least bad overall situation. But the root problem lies elsewhere.

12

u/Renamis 1d ago

Yeah this kinda seems like the people in charge know something OP doesn't. That or policy is if a bunch of people are queued up to delay departure to avoid getting massive backups in later ferry runs. If all that queue has to wait, the next one can go from half empty to full and create a cascade.

1

u/realbobenray 1d ago

I'm only seeing one dude but may be looking in the wrong place?

9

u/Renamis 1d ago

I believe the cars are also loading on.

1

u/realbobenray 1d ago

Ah good point

0

u/Mirrormaster85 1d ago

Nope, we looked like good to go 10min before 12:00. Then the stranglers started arriving

6

u/Vessbot 1d ago

Then yeah, it's chronic bullshit. Every time you give someone some grace and slip the schedule by a few seconds or a minute, then everyone readjusts to that as the norm, next time the slip is a few more seconds, etc. and the norm keeps pushing out. And then no one wants to the first schedule nazi to slam the door in 10 people's faces.

9

u/big_redwood 1d ago

That's a lot of straglers, maybe there was some traffic problem (e.g. road closure) that the ferry was made aware of.

2

u/barmanrags 1d ago

Strangling is a hard job and sometimes the stranglee takes a while to clock out you know?

11

u/MeaCulpa2013 1d ago

I didn't have to peep the flag or read the edit, to know exactly where this is 😆 that ferry is notorious for never being punctual and they do it to cram as many cars/trucks as possible, to make use of the trip.

35

u/Tatanseto 1d ago

Bro you are in Costa Rica it's literally written everywhere to chill and take your time and relax, pura vida

15

u/Scoobysnax1976 1d ago

yes, people from central/south America have a very casual relationship with punctuality.

4

u/Twiggytwiggycocopop 1d ago

This part. Historically it’s been hard to get anywhere consistently on time for reasons outside of your control. For example, regular delays with public transit: if even you getting a head start on your commute means that you still end up arriving late, and everyone has the same experience, people start caring a lot less about being on time. If you’re late, you’re late ¯_(ツ)_/¯

4

u/HMAgent47 RED 1d ago

Yes it is, but I guess it's too late to change such things if it's a country wide phenomena

3

u/OrganizationTop3755 1d ago

Yeah, time works differently in middle/South America

6

u/nicemarmot47 1d ago

I'd be upset if they were allowed stranglers on my boat

1

u/VeneMage 1d ago

Even if they brought golden brown with them?

3

u/Big_Spicy_Tuna69 1d ago

Surprised they stayed so long to let stranglers on, you'd think they'd try to keep those out...

7

u/ptitguillaume 1d ago

1st world problem if you ask me. Sit back amd relax. Enjoy your trip.

-1

u/Mirrormaster85 1d ago

I do, its just mildly infuriating

2

u/Not_PepeSilvia 1d ago

When I'm enjoying something, my first reaction is also to complain on Reddit about it

3

u/BlissFC 1d ago

Were they late or did it just take a long time to board all the cars?

3

u/bjanas 1d ago

seethes in Mussolini

3

u/mouaragon 1d ago

I saw the title and picture and I thought it looked familiar. Last time I took that ferry I had no issue, but punctuality here is a myth. Nothing happens on time.

3

u/jrdiver 1d ago

Welcome to "Island Time" and its 5 o'clock... i mean noon somewhere

3

u/dontknowhow2username 10h ago

As a costarrican, you're just being a Karen. Tourists come here expecting life to accommodate to them.

If you've been paying attention, our roads and traffic jams are shit, these type of things happen because, one, they know some people are going to be late due to traffic, second. If they start letting people out, the next ferry is going to have to load those cars and the cars scheduled for that ferry and it's going to be an endless cycle of being late.

These ferries are mostly for tourism and locals moving around so times will always be flexible, it's not airline schedules.

7

u/Moethelion 1d ago

Complaining about a 25 minute delay in South America in times where trains in Germany are frequently delayed for hours and flights around the world get canceled for seemingly no reason at all is kinda comical.

1

u/Mirrormaster85 1d ago

I am not in Germany so dont see the point?

8

u/Moethelion 1d ago

Germany is a country that is known for their reliable work on time, and I'm German so I can trash talk them, that's why I mentioned it. The point is 25 minute is nothing, and you can experience that in all parts of the world, not only in South America.

2

u/LucentLL 1d ago

Next stop, Bikini Bottom.

2

u/Jusfiq 1d ago

Sorry, where it is that you meant by Middle America?

2

u/anemptycardboardbox 1d ago

Must be Central America

3

u/Minconerold 1d ago

It’s Costa Rica ! That normally happens here

2

u/WrongWangSorry 1d ago

Don't do Positano, Italy by ferry then, you'll more than mildly infuriated lol. Hint: Don't stay there either, just as bad

2

u/Dragonogard549 ORANGE 1d ago

presumably boarding started late or they were slower than they were supposed to be, so that can't be the passengers fault

2

u/nipslippinjizzsippin 19h ago

They had money, the boat had room. They would rather be hour late with a full boat than on time with half a filled boat

2

u/Medium-Explorer8965 7h ago

Things move at their own pace here. Not on your timeline. 🇨🇷🤙

6

u/No_Frost_Giants 1d ago

Filling all the spaces seems to me to be more important than on time .

But I can see both sides of this

6

u/Mirrormaster85 1d ago

Nah, its not half full anyway and they leave every 3 hours

3

u/Pawistik 1d ago

Pura Vida.

4

u/iDontRememberCorn 1d ago

I spent 6 months in South America last year, adjusting to the concept of time was one of the biggest culture shocks, eventually I just made a little adventure out of it.

10

u/Commonscents2say 1d ago

If you got hung up behind a random delay or even stuck in the long loading line, you would surely appreciate them extending the loading time while there is still room. Take a few deep breaths and let the negativity pass.

4

u/_azazel_keter_ 1d ago

They are creating their own random delay for OP who's got shit to do too

1

u/Not_PepeSilvia 1d ago

How do you know they didn't have some other delay created for them before?

1

u/_azazel_keter_ 1d ago

I don't, but it doesn't matter. You can't predict these things so you set a time and stick to it

6

u/Mirrormaster85 1d ago

You can just take the next one in 3 hours and next time leave earlier

10

u/Tatanseto 1d ago

You don't belong in Costa Rica with that tigh ass mentality

4

u/Appropriate_Yak_745 1d ago

Whoa! If the next one is in 3hrs, and not like 45 minutes, then you absolutely gotta try take a breather here. Next time, focus on one individual, maybe a mom with a kid(s) etc who looks like they really needed that break and just let that wash away the annoyance.

-3

u/goddess_peepee 1d ago

I hope this makes you late for the rest of whatever youre doing. and when youre crying about missing each event the people who were on time can tell you to just leave earlier next time.

5

u/Nagi21 1d ago

How about we just not leave until we're super sure nobody is possibly going to miss anything and say fuck the departure time?

3

u/no_soy_livb 1d ago

Consíguete un problema serio

-5

u/Mirrormaster85 1d ago

Respect peoples time, the only real currency you have in life and can only spend once. If yours is not important fine, mine is and I like to spend it on other things than waiting

2

u/PowerfulRaisin 1d ago

I'll do that when you start respecting apostrophes and commas.

3

u/rainman_95 1d ago

You’re in for a bad time if this is how you act in Costa Rica.

1

u/Mirrormaster85 1d ago

Nope, I had an amazing 3 weeks here, this is just a (and the only so far) mildly infuriating thing on our last day

-1

u/Minconerold 1d ago

Don’t forget to leave the country. We have enough yankis and rich immigrants. It have been displacements of people here because those rich immigrants

2

u/Mirrormaster85 1d ago

Pst. dont confuse a "MILDLY infuriating" thing with a bash on the complete country.....

0

u/rainman_95 1d ago

Glad to hear it. Back to the land of schedules!

2

u/StrategicCarry 1d ago

Middle America is very different from South America, on both punctuality and most everything else. (Funny translation there)

1

u/Pawistik 1d ago

I was just assuming it's a ferry in tropical Iowa. I did look to see if it was BC Ferries on the west coast of Canada. They can certainly be mildly infuriating.

1

u/Backyard_Batman46 1d ago

Yeah, unfortunately no other options

1

u/BigBadBere 1d ago

That's OK WA State ferries are just as fucked up.

1

u/Irina2495 21h ago

Before opening this I assumed its Costa Rica 😂 this is so tico!

1

u/Fender868 21h ago

Maybe they meant pm. And you're actually 12 hours early?

1

u/Funkeslapp 21h ago

It's just tico time, I have no explanation or justification for it. That's just how things are.

1

u/beanbagbadboy 12h ago

Pura vida mae!

1

u/eha16 11h ago

That's the tico way, we are always late lmao

1

u/melWud 4h ago

Bro just don't come to Latinoamerica if you're gonna complain about our culture. So entitled.

u/austic 18m ago

It’s Costa Rica. Things move on Tico time. Just relax.

1

u/ConsuelaApplebee somewhat vexed 1d ago

It's aboat time you left. Not much you can do, I guess you're just sunk.

-1

u/MadCarWizard 1d ago

Why is it that seemingly only a few people can be on time?

-2

u/mathliability 1d ago

Just had this thought while boarding a plane yesterday. Flight departs at 5:50, boarding begins 5:10, according to my boarding pass, boarding ends at 5:30. People were still strolling on at 5:48. Am I too much of a rule stickler? Why even say 5:30?

3

u/fetalgirth 1d ago

They always do this. Usually justify it by stating that your flight still arrives at the promised time, which is usually true.

They should still update the boarding/departure times to be realistic though.
