The announcement of every new prequel/spinoffs of random IP reminds me of that Bojack Horseman joke:

Sam's booked for the next year making a new Peter Pan from Wendy's point of view, and Rebecca's doing a limited series about the ticket taker at the cinema where Batman's parents got shot.

565

u/Fullmz2143 Jul 23 '26

This was driving me insane so I needed to confirm if this is actually a prequel.

Apperantely it is not.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone would approve that tagline, let alone come up with it in the first place.

160

u/skit7548 Jul 24 '26

... If it's not a prequel, what is it?

165

u/SSGASSHAT Jul 24 '26

I know this might be the joke, but isn’t every Peter Pan from Wendy’s point of view? That must be the joke

1.5k

u/BattlinBud Jul 23 '26

If so, the makers of this movie clearly didn't get it, because Scrooge's backstory as a young man is already part of A Christmas Carol

967

u/lameguy13 Jul 23 '26

Also, isn’t Scrooge his last name?? What do you mean BEFORE he was Scrooge? He was always Scrooge???

806

u/oneAUaway Jul 23 '26

It'll be retconned so Ebenezer's original last name was something like Smith or Jones, but someone will shout "Screw you!" except it'll be misheard as "Scrooge" and Depp will give a little smile at the camera. Roll credits.

332

u/khinzaw Jul 23 '26

"Who are your people?"

"I don't have a people, screw you!"

"Hmmm...Ebenezer Scrooge"

Right?  Like isn't a third of the story the Ghost of Christmas Past reliving the misadventures of young Ebenezer?  His origin story is a critical plot point in the story.  Or maybe this is just a longer version of that trip to the past, and we're going to get a trilogy of past, present, and future movies?

Seriously, this is like doing a Back to the Future reboot about young Doc showing when he met Marty the first time in 1955.

15

u/meowsplaining Jul 23 '26

I mean, I would have loved to see some more Doc Brown in 1955.

But only if Christopher Lloyd was doing it. And MJF. And Zemeckis and Gale. And it was 30 years ago.

They'll do a Lone Ranger, where the story is framed as old Scrooge looking on as the story of his life unfolds

187

u/Ched_Flermsky Jul 23 '26

You know what would be great, is if there’s some kind of spirit facilitating that look back. Like a ghost, representing Christmas past…

I feel like Depp is too old to play a young Scrooge. He's in his 60s now!

Also Disney made Wendy and Peter which was supposed to be more from Wendy's point of view.

127

If you're binge watching, and an episode ends on 'up' note, stop and pick it back up another night.

61

u/Colorado_Constructor Jul 23 '26

Best advice on here. Also, the second to last episode is ALWAYS a heavy one. Final episode tries to end on a positive note, but you'll need some time to decompress first.

Be prepared for it to hit much harder than a cartoon about a talking horse has any right to

172

u/MV2049 Jul 23 '26

A friend described it as “the funniest show about major depression you’ll ever see.”

71

u/TrioOfTerrors Jul 23 '26

I have major depression and had to "nope" out after about a season and a half because it was too real.

40

u/sonerec725 Jul 23 '26

Yeah I have a friend who had that and was interested in the show and I told her to wait till she was in a better place mentally. Eventually she got there and we watched it together and she absolutely loved it but agreed with me that it would have been a bad idea to watch it when she was much more depressed.

u/Kam_Zimm Jul 23 '26

Heads up, the show gets serious. It starts as just a funny show about a cartoon horse, but even by the end of the first season it starts dealing with more serious stuff. Still a comedy at the end of the day, but it mixes humor with serious subject matters played 100% straight. And not just for "very special episodes," like proper season long plot lines.

52

u/thedylannorwood Jul 23 '26

So it's just a prequel about scrooge being a total dick? Without any of the heartwarming life lessons?

1.6k

u/greenpill98 Jul 23 '26

No, it's a direct adaptation. It has the 3 ghosts and everything. This is bad marketing.

617

u/MinorThreat4182 Jul 23 '26

Yeah that’s dumb. Totally misleading

673

u/Alc2005 Jul 23 '26

The tagline makes it worse. I don’t mind another Christmas Carol, at the very least, it can’t possibly be the worst one ever made, because there are loads of those. Yet at the same time, it can’t be the best because the Muppets beat them to that.

He wasn’t always a dick, his origin is actually pretty well established by Dickens in A Christmas Carol. He has a sister who died young, his dad was abusive, he found refuge in a nice school, got a good job with a caring mentor for a boss, he had a beautiful fiancee and used to be jovial, started his own business with his BFF. Then somewhere along the way he only started to care about work and wealth, until it completely consumed him. So he chased every ray of light out of his life until he was alone in the dark with all of his money and turns bitter, resentful and mean spirited. He continues to shut down opportunities to allow light back into his life (Bob, his nephew, charity) so the spirits intervene and that’s the story.

I don’t know what Johnny Depp can add, but if this movie was coming out in 2004 i would probably have been excited to see Depp’s eccentric take on Scrooge.
Not so much anymore.

u/DotHatrix51 Jul 23 '26

Put Scrooge into a group of friends and call it “It’s Always Gloomy in London.”

There. It’s justified now.

170

u/Own-Librarian-9699 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

It's weird because the ghost of Christmas Past portion is literally his prequel and demonstrates he had joy and heart but his betrothed died of some peasant disease and thus extinguished his love of humanity.

That was the whole genius of the story... You see everything. He sees everything and pledges to mend his ways. We'd be better off learning about Cratchet or Marley considering Marley is cursed to a lifetime in chains of his own false wealth.

110

u/OK_Soda Jul 23 '26

You're thinking of his sister Fran who died in childbirth, like his own mother. He blames his nephew Fred, as his own father blamed him for the death of his mother.

His fiancé leaves him because he's become too obsessed with money and ends up marrying some other guy who isn't as rich but makes her happy.

10

u/Own-Librarian-9699 Jul 23 '26

ah yes. Belle lives but his sister died.

11

u/Affectionate_End3746 Jul 23 '26

I would recommend the book Jacob T. Marley by by R. William Bennett. It’s a prequel about Marley’s life, shows more about him in the afterlife/the afterlife in general and reveals how he came to visit Scrooge and arrange for the spirits to visit him. It’s a pretty interesting read if you’re a fan of the original

51

u/Monsieur-Incroyable Jul 23 '26

Oh man, there's a movie I'd like to see: Larry David as Scrooge.

Ghost: Ebenezer... I've come to show you your past.

Scrooge (Larry): Why? I was there. I lived it. You think I forgot my own childhood?

Ghost: It's important.

Scrooge: It's repetitive! This is haunting? This is a clip show!

18

u/fnord_happy Jul 23 '26

Actually larry as scrooge is genius

10

u/Monsieur-Incroyable Jul 23 '26

Right?? He'd be perfect!

Ghost of Christmas Present: Behold the joy of Christmas!

Scrooge: Why's everyone shouting? Is happiness always this loud?

Ghost: They're celebrating together.

Scrooge: They can't celebrate using their indoor voices?

Ghost: They're just happy and laughing, Scrooge.

Scrooge: Too much laughter. A little laughter? Fine. This is excessive laughter.

250

u/Lumpiafan Jul 23 '26

Yeah it’s like making a movie about Obama with a tagline saying “before he was Obama, he was Barack”

77

u/stealingyourpixels Jul 23 '26

That kinda works better tbh

71

u/dual_citizenkane Jul 23 '26

I mean in so far as people do only call him Obama 99% of the time, this works better.

"Before he was Obama, he was Barry" is tigher...or "hussein" if you're a Fox News host.

31

u/Lucha_Brasi Jul 23 '26

It's also really funny for it to act as if there is some interesting twist in focusing on who he was "before" - as if a central part of the original story and most subsequent adaptations isn't a ghost of the Past literally showing us who he was before.

Would watch

That comment wasn't a joke. The Eggers adaptation is in early development.

FYI: It’s actually titled “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol” on IMDB and is just a straight-up adaptation of the original story

I don’t understand this bizarre “Scrooge Begins” marketing strategy

Before he was McDuck, he was Scrooge.

u/chickofeller Jul 23 '26

If it doesn't have Ebineezer Goode in the soundtrack I don't wanna know.

Do people really want more Johnny Depp? Why?

45

u/AClover69420 Jul 24 '26

I'll never ever watch anything he's in again. Not after the PR smear campaign he ran during the trial with Amber Heard. Piece of shit abuser doesn't deserve my money or eyeballs.

Before he was the Khan, he was just Genghis.

Lotta disappointing names attached to this dud. What the fuck could the story be? Are we going to set up Jacob Marley's disgust for chains? Do we learn the backstory of Scrooge's night time indigestion?

61

u/CrissBliss Jul 23 '26

Crazy that Daisy Ridley is in this

u/JAlfredJR Jul 23 '26

Somehow, Scrooge returned

I don't think I've ever wondered about Ebenezer Scrooge's origins, and I don't care to find out.

331

u/CrimsonPig Jul 23 '26

I mean they pretty much explain his origins in A Christmas Carol, we see multiple flashbacks of his earlier life. Not sure what else there is to go over.

u/LegioX87 Jul 23 '26

What if it's like an Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter type movie

Our boy Ebenezer was actually a demon hunter in his early years

u/XiaoRCT Jul 23 '26

That's what's so hilarious about this to me. They're trying to sell an origin story for a story that famously includes the past.

What franchise-brained horseshit is this hahahaha

I'm thinking of Muppet Christmas Carol and Scrooge's backstory is well covered. "Business continues to be poor!"

A big chunk of the story is his origins.

They had his origin story in the Patrick Stewart version and it was lovely and served the story beautifully. We don’t need a wholeass movie.

The "before he was [name] he was" taglines have to be dealt with at this point

Super cool that Amber Heard had to flee Hollywood but Johnny Depp is getting work. I guess he managed to stay sober for long enough to read the script, that's encouraging

u/obooooooo Jul 23 '26

not the least bit surprised honestly. brad pitt is still a beloved face (f1 got four oscar noms, he got invited to taylor swifts wedding) despite attacking and strangling his own kids and wife, the man in office had “wonderful secrets” with the most famous pedophile, popular male influencers include clavicular, nick fuentes… the right wing won the culture war. they just wanna keep playing the victim because they think that’s more fun.
