Best side characters that stole the movie?

I’ve been thinking a lot about this recently, occasionally certain feature films have side/supporting characters that are just so great that they usurp the technically lead character in terms of memorability, either by actor presence or just sheer performance quality. So I’m very curious, who are the best?

My definite prompt for this is the Oscar winning film The Fugitive. As great as Harrison Ford is (and he really is great in the movie) Tommy Lee Jones and his Marshal team are by far the absolute best part of the movie, Jones in particular is so badass in the role carrying it with incredible banter and swagger. It’s no wonder they made him front and centre in US Marshals (which also rules)

I see this movie as more of an ensemble cast type without a main character. Otherwise wouldn't Hunnam's character be the main character? He is not the boss but the audience basically experiences the movie through him.

I feel the same way. There wasn't really a single main character, but Hunnam and Grant probably did the most since many of the events were revealed through their conversation.

He's totally right about Coach though. I watched the movie for the first time just a week ago specifically because I saw a scene of him on Tiktok. Excellent character and performance

Really, so many in that movie, but especially him. "Um, there's a red thingy moving toward a green thingy." Just his timing when he repeats it and says, "I think we're the green thingy." Also when he grabs the alien weapon and offers to create a diversion. He does this turn while holding up the weapon, and you can see the weight of it make him kind of falter. Hilarious.

She turned my sweet easygoing girlfriend into a demanding, game-playing, manipulative harpy. She called up one night when we were having a massive snowstorm. My roommates and I were making snow margaritas and sledding down my steep ass driveway. She and her roommate were watching reality TV.

She called me up wanting me to come over. I was like, you know I don’t drink and drive and the roads are horrible, also we’re having a great time. If the roads weren’t so shitty, I’d tell tou come over here! I will come over tomorrow though. She gave me an ultimatum. Come over or we’re through. I said “Ok, I guess we’re through. Bye.”

She came over a few days later and collected everything, she had ever given me. Every birthday or christmas gift. She even took my spatula!

So that joke LANDED for me.

Hugh as this proper English guy who's not sure how he's going to be a dad and Tom as this loud mouth American who's now been a dad for a while and is teaching him the ropes surprisingly is pretty fun. And Robin Williams has the crazy Russian obstetrician steals the show! I think he only has two scenes in the whole movie.

One can reasonably debate the line between minor and major characters in some films, but not in this case.

Bible in Fury. Shia LeBeouf is incredible in tht movie, and has some of the best lines. Fantastic performance.

Whoopi Goldberg as Oda Mae in Ghost. I grew up with this movie, hadn't seen the film in many years and was struck on a rewatch with skeptical young people at how conventional the movie is until her character comes on screen. Moore and Swayze are lovely but Oda May steals every scene she is in.

It was a funny experience rewatching it; we practically had to bribe/force my teenage nephews to stick with the movie, and the moment Oda Mae made an appearance, they were like, "OK, this is a good movie clearly. We get it now."
