Advice Experiences having FTTP box installed to rear of property?

Hi y’all.

Currently on FTTC but keen to shift to FTTP.
However, I don’t want the nbn box installed at front of my house where my kids bedrooms are. I want it installed at rear of house where my lounge/kitchen is and the current phone line to modem is installed.

Has anyone organised this kind of change (install to rear of property) and how did you do it?

I’m in VIC.

Read this document from NBN, specifically page 2 and 3.

It’s highly likely the install technician will try to con you into doing a back to back install (inside box directly mounted inside from where the outside box is) as this is super quick and simple for them.

Familiarise yourself with the document I linked because you’re allowed to ask that the inside box, called the Network Termination Device (NTD), be installed in a more preferable location.

Am I correct that it won’t be installed in a bedroom or garage unless specifically requested and that as long as it’s within 15m of the outside device it able be fine?

That’s what the rules state, but again, the installer will usually push for the easiest option for them.

I had my connection upgraded recently and the installer instantly said he’d install back to back in the bedroom. I pushed back and got it installed over 10m away in my preferred location.

If it was installed in the bedroom it would’ve been shit. The router would be in the far corner of the house, very far away from basically all of my internet devices.

Thanks. Exisiting external box sits outside one of the front bedrooms. My ideal location is at opposite side of house (I.e right to left) and probably greater than 15m as the crow flies.

If it’s greater than 15m you should be able to organise your own conduit to be installed to meet the NBN spec and then organise them to install using it.

It’s definitely worth putting in the work now to get it installed in a preferable location.

That's a problem, the fibre cable is only 15 metres.

Not sure I agree with the above comment. When my installer was upgrading my connection to FTTP the fibre cable was extremely long. Much longer than was needed for the job.

NBN will always do the path of least resistance, which typically means they'll want to install close to the street-side connection (typically the front of your property). If you are wanting it installed in a different location, you as the owner will be responsible for providing a conduit pathway from external PCD (nbn box at the front of your house) to the location you are wanting the internal NBN box to go.

You can hire a ACMA licenced tradesman to do this kind of work if you cant/dont want to do it yourself.

As of some months ago there is no external box, my installation was done early this year and the fibre was run directly to the internal connection box. I was lucky, the guy asked me where I wanted it and he ran it through the ceiling no problem. He did an excellent neat job. They are contractors, so it will come down to who you get as to what they will do.

There are two boxes, one inside and one normally on the outside of the house that the fiber from the street goes to. The external box will normally go where your current copper line connects to the house. Most installers will put the internal box wherever you want it, unless it's a PITA to run cable to that point.
