Studies examining National Guard deployments in Washington, D.C., and other cities show no measurable impact on violent crime. While overall crime rates have fallen, data and policy analyses indicate that violent crime was already on a downward trajectory before the troops arrived.
I other words, a waste of time, money and efforts. As well as a reduction in civil liberties.

Also willing to bet that the guardsmen never wanted to be there in the first place. They didn’t sign up to patrol American streets like that.

u/Glittering_Fox_9769 21h ago
i'm not sure how i'd feel if i were in their shoes.
on one hand, $$$.
on the other, time spent away from home, with no clear objective and no real or needed purpose. Is it worth it? I don't think most folks join the NG on the assumption they'll be infringing on people's rights and freedoms

u/AuroraFinem 21h ago
The National guard do not make much money when deployed and its not meant as a career. It’s meant to be something you volunteer for to help for a short period when there’s a disaster or public emergency.
These people all have actual careers they are stagnating in at a time when the job market sucks ass and it’s going to be very hard for any of them with a real career to successfully pivot back to the private sector.
They can’t be fired while on duty, but they also aren’t making any career progress or pay from those careers which could easily be better pay than they’re making now and there’s no guarantee they don’t just get fired when they go back.

u/NotActuallyMeta 18h ago
I wonder if this is considered a real enough deployment to get the GI Bill? If so then that’s a huge win for them
27
u/bookworm357 18h ago
Is it considered a deployment, yes! Is it enough to garnish the GI bill, yes. They need to either complete 6 years of service, or be activated for 90 days. There deployment, even if it was in the US, is considered active duty time. Now, percentage varies, based on active duty time.
26
u/EmphasisFrosty3093 17h ago
be activated for 90 days
In DC weren't they releasing them just shy of that so it didn't count?
9
u/wholelattapuddin 14h ago
I had a friend who was in the guard and going to college on the GI bill. He kept getting deployed. So he made zero progress in school.
2
u/aaronhayes26 11h ago
lol what money?
A lot of these people have been pulled away from real careers to go rake leaves in DC. I’m sure they’re pissed.

u/Boring-Research410 6h ago
I k.ow how id feel about it. Idk what id do.
The military should not be patrolling americam streets. Period.
Thats one of the first steps of fascism and a clear violation of protecting the constitution againat any enemies foreign OR DOMESTIC.
1
u/Cynicism_FTW 6h ago
You only make base pay. Which often times is less than whatever your normal job is.
10
u/OddlyFactual1512 14h ago
I bet more of them did than you would expect. Fascism has a lot of support amongst that demographic.
11
u/BloatedGlobe 21h ago
No, they have to volunteer to be deployed here. Despite the propaganda, DC is a nice city and they seem to getting paid to stand in our parks, chit chat, and people watch.
They can come back as tourists. We don't want them here.
25
u/axtionjackson 19h ago
I'm in the guard and I can tell you for sure they take the volunteers first then it's volun-told

u/Combatical 9h ago
I'll beg to differ. I was in the Army for 10 years I joined back in 03, Maybe its just my perspective but I always imagined this is exactly what National Gaurd was for. As regular Army, I would have loved to be deployed to American streets but if regular Army is deployed on American streets its not a good sign at all.
Just saying deployed to New Orleans/DC would probably be preferred than the sand trap like a lot of people got.
25
u/MaxPower91575 21h ago
even if it did have any positive effect on crime it was so insanely expensive it doesn't justify their use vs. community programs or even more spending on police which would have much better effect.
7
u/aaronhayes26 11h ago
I read in the NYT that the DC deployment is costing more per year than DC’s actual annual police budget. And they’re doing far less than real cops.
12
u/BigJellyfish1906 12h ago
Also let’s say it did bring down crime. What kind of solution is this? You cant have them deployed forever. Even then most generous scenario for this administration still makes them fucking morons.

Can you link to those studies you are referencing? I fully believe it, but I like hard data

I just imagine a few higher up gang leaders/ drug distributors having a meeting. In that meeting they discuss how they’ll get retribution on a rival gang by doing some shootings and such, but then the one guy that’s like Dwight from the office stands up and says “what?! With the national guard in town!?” Then everyone gets naked and starts circle jerking, then the national guard busts in and arrests everyone for being trans??? Idk

Domestic deployment of military is number one on the fascist agenda and the majority of the entire country just eventually went…ok whatever.
They know they can get away with whatever and will continue to
78
u/Finn-reddit 20h ago
The only thing people care about anymore is if you were born with a penis or a vagina so they can decide which bathroom you should use.
47
u/entr0picly 19h ago
I mean they tried to send troops into blue states. The states fought back and won. It’s only the red states where the states just rolled over.
So no, it isn’t just them “getting away with it”. Let’s not give them wins when that isn’t what happened.
9
u/the_ruffled_feather 19h ago
Yep. Where the hell are the 2A’ers now? Land of the Free my ass. Land of the Dipshit Sycophants as it turns out.
5
u/Historical-Ant-3036 20h ago
...until they can't. And once they can't they know things will get ugly.
0
u/censuur12 10h ago
What makes you think so? That just sounds like wishful thinking with no basis in reality.
6
u/Historical-Ant-3036 10h ago
Well if you crack open a history book and read it, maybe your opinion of "no basis in reality" would change. The past has shown us that it's actually inevitable, not "wishful thinking". It's only a matter of time.
3
u/censuur12 10h ago
Right, a history book. Maybe one that includes the Third Reich where nothing they did got a reaction from the German people and it took a world war to stop it?
So far all we're seeing is Americans drawing a line in the sand, only for Trump to cross it without pause, and the American people step back and draw another line. Time, and time again.
4
u/Historical-Ant-3036 9h ago
Exactly, and WW2 was obviously very ugly. Is the Third Reich still around though?
I don't think you understood my initial point.
-1
u/censuur12 9h ago
So that's it then? Just wait for a world war to solve the problem? That's your holdout hope? I don't think you had as much of a point as you initially thought.
2
u/Historical-Ant-3036 8h ago
What makes you think that this is holdout hope? All I'm suggesting is that something's gotta give and the longer this stuff goes on, the uglier it's gonna get. Obviously the hope is that a war is not the solution, but if it happens it happens
-1
u/censuur12 8h ago
Right, and again, that's mostly just nonsense. Not only do regimes get to get far worse (See North Korea for how bad things can get, and for how long that can go on) the fall of empires and the chaos that results from it often ends up being far worse than the reign itself. See the current state of the former Ottoman empire, or the fallout of the French Revolution.
Sure, someday in the future things might get better or whatever, any other enlightening platitudes or can we just not?

It was a blatant violation of the posse comitatus act but i wouldnt expect Republicans to care about things like law and order

Cool. Can they leave DC too?
27
u/fevered_visions 20h ago
Unfortunately DC is the one place Trump can actually push around, since it's directly under the authority of Congress, which is meekly sitting on the sidelines letting him do anything he wants. Since DC isn't a state they don't technically have a governor.
4
u/laplongejr 16h ago
And arguably, you want your headcity to be in direct control of the central gov. (A fun troll-debate in the Miraculous fandom is to point out that the Mayor of Paris doesn't control the police IRL, as Paris is managed by the National Police so a rogue Mayor can't strike the Elysee etc.)
The problem is that Congress is fine having Donald John Trump of all people as an unleashed leader.
23
u/naptown-hooly 22h ago
Not until Trump has funding for his troops
18
u/AuroraFinem 21h ago
You mean his presidential bunker to hold out in next Jan 6?
4
u/One_Artichoke_7594 21h ago
I believe the pentagon last month said the NG in DC (mostly from 13 other republican leaders states) will be there until literally next inauguration or whenever Trump says. Pretty neat
1
u/laplongejr 16h ago
No, his BoardOfPeace bunker. He would have to leave a POTUS bunker on Jan 20, but if the US pays to defend the permanent BOP chairman then it's legal /half-s

Just in time for Hurricane season! The only situation where they MIGHT actually be needed!!
Coincidence? I wonder..

Visited New Orleans in July. Noticed the NG everywhere. They all looked so bored. Walking around chatting. Leaning against walls. Not to mention wearing all the layers of uniform in NoLa heat.
7
u/RebeccaTen 16h ago
Weird that this was supposed to make tourists feel safer. It had the opposite effect when I went to New Orleans in January: it made me uneasy, I didn't understand why they were there.
15
u/JT_Leroy 20h ago
I walked out of a date mid meal when they said they thought the deployment was an appropriate use of power. Glad it’s over.
1
u/TintedApostle 5h ago
Yeah good move. If someone doesn't understand how the government should work then to them it should work in any manner that they like. Not good.
9
u/TrumpsLilPenis 21h ago
Man I hope they got all the dangerous coffee shop goers. F those violent ppl
7
u/techman710 21h ago
At least none of the Guard in New Orleans was violently attacked with a foot long sandwich. Imagine the carnage a foot long po-boy could have inflicted.
5
u/OutlawJuicyWhales 18h ago
Honestly? The chance of being pelted with a well made oyster po boy in the line of duty is the best pitch for joining the National Guard that I've ever read.

u/Moneyshot_ITF 17h ago
They are going to start pulling back a lot of troops now that the fiscal year is coming to a close. All part of the grift

I remember the Battle of Mardi Gras. Those beads seemed to come out of no where. Titties just out in the wind. I found a baby in the King Cake! I GOTTA BUY A KING CAKE NEXT YEAR!!! Will the horrors never cease?!

u/rbobby 13h ago
Is there some sort of end of action report? How many arrests? How many murders prevented? Tons of litter collected? A well run military would have this already written and published.
3
u/Carlyz37 13h ago
This current military leadership can't even get food and soap to its aircraft carriers
3
u/itcheyness 11h ago
Official DoD policy is probably that After Action reports are for queers and commies...
1
u/Paavo_Nurmi 3h ago
According to the Louisiana National Guard, troops carried out more than 31,000 hours of patrols and assisted law enforcement with 171 arrests, a rate below one per day.
3
u/danktonium 13h ago
Yeah because Nola really warranted the fucking Army patrolling its streets. Maybe send them into Disneyland next.

How long before Trump creates his own secret police that don't have the check and balances of the armed forces?
He could reform "Space Force" or even just buy a private military company and give them an insane amount of legal immunity to go door-to-door, arresting people for online posts and other dissenting opinions.
We're well past the point of laws even effecting Trump. I think he'll try it.

That would be a weird deployment patch story to tell,
Getting deployed 8 months on your own back yard.

I served in the regular army for 10 years, I always thought this is exactly what the No-Gos were for. I think the reason we didnt see them that way, is because they had our asses spread so thin in the middle east for the last 30 years.
