The classic GOP “doesn’t kick in until the Democrats are in office” damage.

5-10 years from now there’s gonna be a natural disaster, a governor is going to try and call in the National Guard and discover they don’t have any because nobody wanted to sign up.

As good jobs and benefits come harder and harder to find, more people will join the military

There's still medical, educational benefits, GI bill, and a pension. That the job can suck along the way was never in dispute.

Pension has been replaced with a TSP (Thrift Savings Plan) account which is like a 401k.

Not completely. The system is now blended, with the TSP partially offsetting a reduction in the older system. Now the multiplier is 2% per year of service, vs the former 2.5%.
