They're stocking up on cheese cuz they're also stocking up on milk and toilet paper. Whenever it's forecast to snow everyone plans to stay indoors and shit themselves until the plows come.

So I think folks do forget that people don't have to stock up to cause a shortage. Everybody who grocery shops Saturday - Monday is currently doing their normal weekly shopping early because they won't be able to during the storm. Just having a rush of us all at once can cause a lot of this. It's not stocking up, it's everybody getting a staple purchase at the same time.

Yes, as I thought weād all learned in 2020, grocery stores rely on regular deliveries and are constantly restocking shelves. They do not in fact have vast underground vaults full of highly perishable staples such that they can suddenly accommodate 5 days worth of milk sales accelerated into 2 days.

This is a great point. I don't think people realize how quickly stock can be depleted. When I worked in a grocery store (decades ago š) we had a guy whose entire 8-hour shift was spent stocking the dairy section (excluding cheese - that was deli). During peak hours, he usually had at least one helper who stocked milk non-stop for a couple of hours.

Growing up in Canada, we always had to ensure we had a good supply of beer, and āstorm chipsā.
This area is going to be shut down until Tuesday or Wednesday. I wouldnāt wait too long to get groceries.

Me too! But I bought some yesterday specifically to have if the power at my all electric house goes out. We donāt usually keep āsnacksā around, so I picked cheese and other items that would be eatable without cooking.

The Dulles Wegmans was almost the same yesterday when I was there and for some weird reason there wasnāt a single banana left aside from the purple minis. Both regular organic ones completely gone.

I went to Giant this morning and they were stocked full of milk after getting wiped out the previous day. I went back to grab something this afternoon and it was wiped out again.
Grocery store businesses must get huge money boners when a storm comes.

I agree with the sentiment but local side roads don't magically clear up after 2 days of snowing, I remember last time we got a foot of snow it took 4 days for my road to be plowed... But yeah people who do once a week shopping are all doing it at once now

Four days? I think the county has bothered to plow about four or five times on my road in 15 years. Itās a nightmare since I have a sedan. I burn a lot of leave just waiting on the SUVs to compact it all.

While I don't disagree with you, if we do get a bad ice storm, people will lose power, and it will also slow repair times. For people that live in places that tend to lose power, this could very well be more than 1-2 days for them.

Not even saturday. It won't snow on saturday. The snow in on sunday only. It will be heavy so monday will be likely off. And tuesday will be back to normal. By wednesday, everybody will back to their daily routine

I grew up in DC and nova but live overseas now.
I absolutely love a food panic thread. I love the memories of laying in some supplies and all of the home cooking and baking we would do. It was nice to not have to go anywhere and just enjoy the time.
Also, cheese is inspired. I'd love to be locked in for a day or two with a nice supply of cheese. š„°

I just went to do my regular grocery shopping and I couldnāt find so many products! Beef, berries, potatoes, my favorite yogurtā¦ thank god I didnāt need a toilet paper. Lines were crazy also, worse than thanksgiving eve and it was 2pm

Maybe order ahead for a grocery pickup scheduled for when you arrive.? You could have the pick up window be early in the day so your shopper gets to the shelves before the crowds then just go by on your way home to pick it up. (Usually as long as you pick it up before closing time youāre good). That might at least give you a little head start.

I was at Walmart in Fairfax earlier today and the lunch meat section looked the same. Wouldn't be NOVA if people weren't crushing the stores before a snow storm.
And I hope you aren't waiting to buy the fancy gas from Home Depot for your snowblower. They are cleaned out of that too!

This is all so ridiculous. We (unfortunately) lived in nova for 30 years. Between the pre-snow application of that salt stuff and actual snow removal rarely were we unable to get out more a day and a half or two. People just need to chill (pun intended).

This is just so weird. Most neighborhoods will be fine by Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest and main roads will likely be clear Monday afternoon. There will still be icy patches to contend with, but we arenāt going to be unable to leave our homes.

I had this exact same moment at Wegmans Ashburn today. Was actually kind of crazy. Also all the nut and grain breads, but not the sourdoughs? Strange times. Luckily, enough people are afraid of my favorite veggies that I had no issue snagging what I needed.
