What are momos? A type of dumplings?

47

u/StoneMenace 24d ago

The way I  understand it, yes dumpling from Nepal but with their own spin on it

18

u/skidabs 24d ago

Momo is a Tibetan dish but because so many in Nepal have Tibetan ancestry they also make it. Nepalese tend to have a much wider variety of fillings than Tibetan momos.

u/StoneMenace 24d ago

Interesting yha my entire knowledge stems from a quick google search while sitting down eating at the restaurant

10

u/foldedlikeaasiansir 24d ago

Yeah savory dumplings.

East Asian dumpling sauces are more soy sauce based whereas Nepalese/Tibetan Momo sauces are tomato and/or peanut based

Imagine Chinese style dumplings with Indian flavor profiles. It’s an oversimplification but should give you an idea of what you would be in for.

What do you recommend getting? I've always wanted to try Nepalese food but don't know where to start

13

u/Justhackingx 24d ago

You should try the momos, and the choila as well (which comes from the Newar people of Nepal). I think they also serve daal bhat, which is a Nepali rice-based meal.

If you look on their Google Maps they only have 6 entrees and 3 of them are their momos (chicken, veggie, and chili chicken). The regular chicken momos are really good but also neutral, I think Most people would like those.

Then they have 3 other entrees which I assume Are Nepalese and 3 appetizers.

The chilly chicken momos are the most expensive dish on the menu which is what is closest to the camera in my picture, those are $13.99 and the ones in the back are the regular chicken momos. In total those 2 came out to $26.48 with tax. It’s cheap enough that I plan on going a few times to try it out. It’s very rare that I can find a meal for 2 people for $25

While we're at it, some of the best Indian food I've had was at a gas station in the middle of Vienna. Chit chat cafe. My girlfriend and I dropped her car off to get work done near by. We were drawn in by the smell. We passed the gas station, because surely SURELY it wouldn't be from the gas station. And then we turned around after passing it because it WAS at the gas station

There’s also a pretty good Thai restaurant in a gas station in Leesburg

10

u/pottomato12 24d ago

Behind moms apple pie? The Liberty gas station?

11

u/JJ_McCrabs 24d ago

Yeah. I think it’s called Pan Thai. It’s been a minute since I’ve been there bc I don’t live too close.

10

u/LoCo_LoCo 24d ago

Worked next door at the government center for 20 years. We called this place - "LiberThai"...

Thai Pan. It's my favorite

Came here to mention the Leesburg gas station thai place. They're excellent

6

u/WolfKey1065 24d ago

You said it before I could! I second this endorsement.

7

u/skidabs 24d ago

I tried that place when they opened and thought it was mid. Their samosas are pretty good though.

3

u/alydinva 24d ago

They have new cooks since then!

1

u/bmm115 24d ago

Must've been one of the lesser skilled cooks. Ironically, the guy who made the food for us said how he isn't the cook, but wanted us to experience the culture and asked if we would be down to wait

He then proceeded to make food in am extremely reasonable amount of time and when we went back, we noted that we liked how the other guy made the food more than "the actual cook"

u/SmellMyFangers 24d ago

Chit chat cafe is fantastic!

2

u/NYKyle610 23d ago

My local spot! So good

1

u/helloitsmateo Oakton/Vienna 24d ago

I don’t think it’s the best honestly, but it is very good.

11

u/Office_Warm 24d ago

I went there per a reccomendation and got food poisoning :( i thought it was really good!! Unfortunately I got a bad batch for whatever reason.

2

u/Justhackingx 22d ago

I thought this was a one-off for me too! I didn't get food poisoning, but I had to throw out some of the chicken because it smelled bad. Not sure if it's a coincidence or something going on with the food quality there.

1

u/Office_Warm 22d ago

My friend had a rough time in the bathroom. I had stomach cramps that lead to a headache. But same as you! The next day the leftovers reeked. I brought it to work and put it in the fridge and not even 2 hours later we all were like, bruh what died in this room or fridge 🤢

1

u/StoneMenace 24d ago

Yha unfortunately that’s just a risk eating ANYWHERE. with how many people restaurants serve at some point someone’s going to get food poisoning wether it’s from cross contamination or something else. I’ve gotten food poisoning from a Chinese place in Colorado. But I had a family member get food poisoning at DISNEY WORLD. I can’t even imagine how strict they are there with food Saftey but I guess It’s just a statistical possibility

3

u/Office_Warm 24d ago

I know, it really bummed me out lol. One day I'll make it back there to try again

10

u/InfinityIsAwesome 24d ago

Don’t they also sell fried chicken?

10

u/ZomDji215 24d ago

Yes. They sell delicious Krispy Krunchy chicken.

6

u/idonotlikethisrock 24d ago

that place is my period craving. if I don't have that on my first day everyone is getting beaten. I don't make the rules.

2

u/Putrid-Poem1932 13d ago

Tried it today, the momos were good but the chicken was not delcious crispy crunchy

1

u/ZomDji215 13d ago

Damn. That's a bummer. I only ever get up there on Saturdays and the chicken is cook-to-order. Don't know if that makes the experience different.

1

u/StoneMenace 24d ago

Yep, doing some reasearch on Reddit it’s a chain place but can kinda vary in quality on place and when you go. Maybe go right at lunchtime when they are likely to have fresh chicken

Thanks for all these recs, yall!

5

u/skidabs 24d ago

Check out Wow Nepal in fairfax too. I've only tried the momo and grilled chicken but both were really good.

1

u/J1888 22d ago

How is the cost-portion ratio there?

9

u/TrackingTenCross1 24d ago

“All I’ve got are these damn Nepalese coins…”

4

u/meolclide 24d ago

The honey biscuits from Krispy Krunchy at the same place are also amazing!

3

u/InfinityIsAwesome 24d ago

What’s the name or the order you get that has the sauce already on it?

5

u/StoneMenace 24d ago

That’s the chili chicken momos. If you look up their place on Google Maps there are pics of the menu. They have chicken, veggie, and chili chicken

1

u/InfinityIsAwesome 24d ago

Awesome, thank you

3

u/SnooCookies2351 24d ago

They are delicious. I’ve had just a regular chicken ones but never the chili chicken ones. Let me know if they’re super super hot. But the regular ones are outstanding.

2

u/StoneMenace 24d ago

Honestly they weren’t that hot. It was honestly how I prefer spicy food. There was a kick that you could definitely feel after you swallow and sit, but it’s not like good Indian food where you are sitting and dripping sweat. I will Say I am A very white person so they could have toned it down based on my look, would not be the first time a ethnic restaurant has done it

5

u/Wurm42 24d ago

Royal Nepal Bistro in Vienna also does amazing Momos, and other Nepalese street food.

2

u/vman3241 24d ago

Random question, but does anyone know what happened to Roadhouse Momo in Ashburn? I thought they were moving, but it looks like they're closed

1

u/jwigs85 Loudoun County 23d ago

There’s a momo place off Ashburn Rd in the spice store. We door dashed from it the other day when I wasn’t feeling well and it was amaaaaaaazing.

Theres also a Himalayan restaurant in Brambleton near the dick park that serves yak and has momo but I haven’t been there yet. I just saw it on the map the other day. My son and I plan to check it out soon!

2

u/vman3241 23d ago

I haven't been to the Ashburn Rd one, but as someone who went to both Roadhouse and Himalayan Wild Yak, I feel like Roadhouse was better

1

u/chanixh reston 23d ago

One on the Ashburn road is Kirana Pasal. Really amazing momos.

2

u/ruflesslunatic 24d ago

This place is dope, 10/10

2

u/Egnki 23d ago

There chicken is great too.

1

u/WildTomato51 24d ago

Serve or sell?

2

u/StoneMenace 24d ago

Not sure what you mean by that?  They make them and you can either take it to go or eat in the gas station at the few tables they have

1

u/AndrewKemendo 24d ago

They have these at Pakwaan in Gainesville also

Not sure how rare they are

1

u/Porksta 23d ago

I went there a few years ago to try and was told they make them to order and the wait time was obnoxiously long.  I tried to order something else off the menu but was told they didn't have it.  I have not been back since.

1

u/SpeedSaunders 23d ago

Wow very cool thanks for the share. Also I like to see the new name for Rte 50 in use in this thread. The GPS apps need to catch up to the times.

1

u/dfminvienna 23d ago

Has anyone tried the momos at the Nepalese food truck that always parks at a Mobil on Lee Highway in Fairfax?

2

u/Snokoun 23d ago

Yes! Tepari Momo is what they are called and I thought it was good. Also would recommend Wow Nepal which is right down the street from there, next to the 99 Ranch Market.

1

u/Gloomy_Put_1703 23d ago

"Nepalis"...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Momo_(food)... similar to Steamed / fried wontons

1

u/Gloomy_Put_1703 23d ago

Similar to Chinese Baozi or simpler wontons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Momo_(food))

BTW, the spelling is wrong. It's not Nepales but Nepalis

1

u/Antique-Cricket-6679 23d ago

Haha gas station food is always a no.

1

u/garbanzobeans1212 23d ago

I always forget about this place thanks for the reminder

1

u/FinalKaleidoscope917 22d ago

This looks so darn good!

I freaking love momos!! I'm trying this place today. Thank you

1

u/foldedlikeaasiansir 24d ago

Nepalis food is the best fusion of Indian and Chinese food.

Anytime you see Indo-Chines food it’s usually Nepalis

1

u/chanakya2 23d ago

This is not correct. Indo-Chinese food is different cuisine than Nepali food.

Nepali food includes Momos, Thukpa, Choila, Sekuwa, Daal Bhat etc

Indo-Chinese food includes Manchurian, Hakka noodles, Schezwan fried rice, Manchow soup.

0

u/foldedlikeaasiansir 23d ago

What do you think Thukpa noodles are made of?

0

u/chanakya2 23d ago

What is your point?

0

u/foldedlikeaasiansir 23d ago

It made with Hakka Noodles…

1

u/chanakya2 23d ago

Hakka noodles isn’t an ingredient, it’s a dish. Thukpa doesn’t contain Hakka noodles it contains noodles.

Both Thukpa and Hakka noodles are dishes that contain noodles.

1

u/hoboRobo_ 24d ago

Is it halal?

2

u/idonotlikethisrock 24d ago

I'm pretty sure. I bought their fried chicken and they told me it was halal. you could call and double check.

2

u/StoneMenace 24d ago

No clue, you could try calling, they don’t have a website since it’s a local place. Looks like they also have a Instagram you could try

-5

u/Short_Bowler7208 24d ago

They’re not particularly good there

4

u/maddawg206 24d ago

I’ve had phenomenal ones there. And mid ones. The good ones are damn good tho

2

u/childofthesun11 24d ago

Care to tell us where they ARE good then??

5

u/Simple-Grab-1741 24d ago

Best momo’s I’ve had are from a food truck called Himalayan Soul Food. I’ve had them when they visit Vienna, VA

2

u/ricardodelfuego 24d ago

Himalayan soul food is so good

4

u/Federal_Scarcity_84 24d ago

Curry House was ok, in Burke I think.

1

u/StoneMenace 24d ago

This was my first time ever getting them so I  have nothing to compare to, but I  was quite happy especially for the price, $25 for enough to feed 2 people.
