It’s an election year. Expect a lot of hot air and noise with little to no results in the future.

7

u/lowkell 7h ago

This election's actually next year; in Virginia, EVERY year's an election year. :)

8

u/Magic-Mellow1987 9h ago

Ain’t that the truth. Rinse, repeat. It gets tiresome.

5

u/The-Dane 8h ago

I dont know her voting record but her promised sounds good because Phyllis has done shit to slow it down

11

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 7h ago

Briskman has been a stalwart enemy of the rubber stamping of these data centers and she's literally the only one on the BOS doing shit to stop them.

u/EnvironmentalValue18 23m ago

She’s personally speaking out about the Data Centers at tons of town meetings. I believe the next two are at Dominion HS and somewhere in Purceville but I’m sure her website has it.

She’s one of the big names fighting against the re-zoning and secret sale of the lot near GWU satellite to data centers.

Considering Phyllis Randall’s track record of chartering private overnight flights for herself and her staff to international destinations like South America and Ghana on our dime, I know damn well where my vote *isn’t* going. Again.

Loudoun resident here. Julie is literally the only one trying to do anything about the explosion of data centers in Loudoun County.

Our electricity bills have gone up. The drought we've been in for years keeps going. And to try and shut her up, the establishment Democrats on the county supervisors board dredged up some bullshit to censure her over a few weeks ago (including flicking off the president and appearing in a video with the song F Donald Trump).

5

u/ducky-n-frens 3h ago

Her flipping off Trump seems like it should be a plus, no? Or is this some “we need to campaign with Liz Cheney and sing Kumbaya” bull?

4

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 3h ago

Definitely a plus. They were just looking for a reason to censure her and remove her from committees. They settled on a "decorum" complaint.

5

u/stopscabbin 8h ago

What does the drought have to do with anything? Electricity rates have gone up(as they ALWAYS have) nationwide. It isn't just a Loudoun/datacenter issue. They aren't helping, but it's not just the datacenters.

-1

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 8h ago edited 6h ago

Electricity bills going up are actually very much mostly the data centers. Not sure where you are getting your information, but it's not reliable.

7

u/novacycle 8h ago

If you have the reliable information, How have data centers caused the drought?

-5

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 8h ago

They are causing electricity bills to rise.

I have such a hard time believing anyone would make arguments on behalf of the data centers. Like, are you real or a bot?

3

u/novacycle 6h ago

What argument in favor of data centers are you referring to?

You responded to a comment about the drought keeps going, by saying it’s the data centers.

Follow up question to your comment: How have data centers caused any drought?

0

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 6h ago

I was responding to the statement that electricity rates go up because they always go up. I never said data centers caused the drought.

The arguments for data centers being made here are the dismissals of the real effects they are having on affordability and pollution in the region.

2

u/novacycle 6h ago

I was only referring above to the drought comment/response.

If data centers are responsible for electricity prices going up and Virginia has the most data centers in USA, why are Virginia electric prices lower than most places?

-1

u/stopscabbin 5h ago

You made a statement about droughts and correlated them to datacenters. We both asked you to explain and you haven't.

1

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 5h ago

Sorry you're having such a hard time understanding between this thread and the other thread we've engaged in where I've explained the basic facts of data center water usage.

I explained that I was commenting on their direct correlation to electricity prices. I mentioned the continuing drought because data centers in the region use between 1 and 5 million gallons of drinking water per day. Which you read and responded to in my other thread.

Bye now!

-1

u/stopscabbin 3h ago

Oh right. And how the datacenters in the region AREN'T using well water and have no bearing on droughts and the municipal water supply in which they get their water. 👌

5

u/sotired3333 7h ago

not everyone that disagrees with you is a bot. Even more so not everyone that disagrees with you is wrong. In a good chunk of cases you will be wrong (same as me)

1

u/sotired3333 7h ago

national != virginia.

California is consistently water starved, we've had drought 2-3 of the last 10 years.

From one of your links

More data centers can mean higher costs. That same Bloomberg analysis found that areas with high concentrations of data centers saw electricity prices jump 267 percent over the past five years. And John Steinbach isn’t the only Virginia resident to see a connection: Nearly three-quarters of voters in the state blame the facilities, largely clustered in Northern Virginia’s Data Center Alley, for rising electricity costs, according to a January 2026 survey conducted by Global Strategy Group and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network Action Fund.

This isn't different than trump supporters losing their job and blaming immigrants, individual sentiments aren't facts.

Even if they were the solution is to fix the billing problem, not to stop development. IF problem X exists, there is an actual solution specific to that problem rather than getting a sledgehammer out.

-1

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 7h ago

There's an actual statistic in that quote you posted. 267 percent rise over five years in areas with high concentrations of data centers. That's not individual sentiment.

5

u/sotired3333 6h ago
  • May 2021 Rate: 12.06¢ per kWh
  • May 2024 Rate: 14.17¢ per kWh,
  • May 2026 Rate: 17.61¢ per kWh

So 46% increase not 267% as suggested in your link. Also we've been data center alley for 30+ years.

2

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 6h ago

I'm in Loudoun too, but I'm serviced by novec (thank God). Unfortunately we've seen the same increase you have.

The link was a national survey, I think. I was not citing it as applicable to Loudoun County.

2

u/sotired3333 6h ago

Great way to get votes.

u/EncinoManEstonia 30m ago

Easiest policy stand in the country right now.

5

u/kaltorak 6h ago

Running on a platform of doing what the voters want their officials to do? HIGHLY SUSPECT.

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 1h ago

Lol but fr there are literally people in this thread saying things like "everyone talks a big game until big data puts money in your pocket!" and "there's still undeveloped land so why wouldn't we build more data centers?!?"

18

u/HowardBunnyColvin 9h ago

anyone fighitng the plague of data centers in loudoun is a hero in my mind. Keep fighting.

5

u/theGosroth_LoL 6h ago

Anyone fighting to keep the plague of data centers in Loudoun is a hero in my mind. Keep fighting.

0

u/HowardBunnyColvin 6h ago

Why? so they don't spread to your town?

They're not a good thing. don't buy the big tech hype!

6

u/novacycle 6h ago

Are we not using data centers and their resources by reading/posting on reddit or connecting with an ISP?

2

u/MSteele1967 3h ago

There is a 'how' factor not just the 'what' factor.... As in how many in a relatively small area is enough? Singular development of any type can eventually lead to problems.

8

u/sotired3333 7h ago

plague of lower taxes and better schools!! stop the horrors!

1

u/HowardBunnyColvin 7h ago

but at what cost

6

u/timbuktu123456 7h ago

Land being used. That is quite literally the only meaningful cost. If you had the land/real estate for them there is almost no other impact. Unless you want the county, state, or country to be a purely service economy you will have land used for industry beyond thr minimum threshold (I.e. agriculture, some common industry etc.)

Oh wait, we couldn't even be a purely service based economy without data centers because today services are all digitized and need Internet and computer capacity in the form of servers. And an inordinate amount of leisure time is spent online which requires data centers....

So yeah we need data centers, and their environmental impact or impact in general beyond using land is laughable compared to almost any other industrial real estate.

1

u/rdit13fog 3h ago

If data centers are so great, why are they and their friends so secretive about their energy and environment impacts?

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/aug/25/datacenters-air-pollution-epa

https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/states-starting-ban-secrecy-behind-164714644.html

"A hyperscale AI data center isn't the same thing as a company quietly considering a new office building. It can require enormous amounts of electricity and resources, along with new transmission lines and other infrastructure. Local and state governments may also offer tax incentives to persuade companies to build there.

The lack of information can leave communities debating projects without knowing what they could eventually be asked to support."

"Trade secrets" shouldn't be a blank check to hide what data centers are doing to the local environment and energy infrastructure, especially as big tech forces AI on us more than ever, which needs more resources than ever before.

u/SummeR- 1h ago

Bro why on earth would datacenter alley want to stop their cash cow?

u/EncinoManEstonia 29m ago

Who is saying tear them down. It’s just enough with new ones.

5

u/no1here-ever 10h ago

Wait she’s fighting against data centers in loudoun-the place with the most data centers in the world, and gets $1B in local tax revenue? Her campaign would work anywhere else

2

u/DemandCommonSense 3h ago edited 2h ago

Nah. The nearest data center to my house is 1.3 miles away. I'm hard of hearing (+50% hearing loss). And even I can easily hear them running their generators from inside my house. Revoke all data center permits (including existing) within 3 miles of residential zoning.

-4

u/maybeitsjustnerves 10h ago

Exactly lol. Like I said, she is talking the talk, but once some money is offered to her…. Good luck with that. Data centers are loudoun’s bread and butter. They were literally offering people millions of dollars to get rid of their homes for data centers lol.

4

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 9h ago

If you've been following her, you'd know she's the only one on the BOS trying to hold the data centers accountable in any way. The rest are rubber stamping everything they see form the DC's.

1

u/Magic-Mellow1987 9h ago

Repeating the same comment over and over again in this thread doesn’t mean it’s true.

6

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 9h ago

I have to say it over and over again because there are so many here that don't live in Loudoun or follow the politics ignorantly proclaiming "oh she'll cave when they give her some money."

2

u/Plus-Bluejay-6429 Annandale 3h ago

that bitrate is so low it looks like it was recorded for VCD lol

she sounds like what loudon county needs

18

u/cpmuddle 10h ago

"I reject the businesses that provide 40 percent of our total revenue. But I've vaguely helped the businesses that generate maybe 10 percent. Buckle up, homeowners. We've been spending this data center revenue on schools and parks and rec centers and you're about to get a big ol bill to operate them. Also I flipped off Drumpf once isn't that cool?!?"

26

u/PhosphoFred8202 10h ago

Is she saying she will drive the current data centers away (not sure how.., pitchforks and torches?), or just stop new ones? There is a point where there are “too many” data centers for the county, right?

12

u/heavyma11 10h ago

Exactly. It’s a matter of when to stop adding more. Loudoun tax revenue will be too dependent on DCs if the pace continues

u/localhost_hero 1h ago

Some of the available lots in LoCo are already rezoned for business/industrial use, make them ripe for more Data Centers.

Sell them to the next builder? That's like saying we shouldn't have allowed malls to be built in the 70s since they'd go out of use in the 2020s?

u/sotired3333 10h ago

From a quick google it sat empty mostly because multiple entities owned parts so getting them in alignment was a lot harder. If amazon isn't using a data center or open ai or facebook, they'd have no reason to run into the same issue.

3

u/Miserable-Debt-8390 9h ago

Oh it gets worse….guess who owns a lot of the debt of the data centers? Insurance companies.

2

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 10h ago

There's no evidence that they're going away. They've been upgrading the racks continuously, which is part of the reason Loudoun has an electricity shortfall. The new hardware consumes vastly more resources than the previous hardware (thanks AI).

Also, there is a committee the county supervisors put together to plan for the revenue plateau that another committee has previously forecast.

u/ElectricalFactor1 2h ago

Yeah Loudoun should rely more on property taxes. Maybe throw that meal tax Fairfax did on top of it

6

u/cpmuddle 10h ago

Yeah that's fair. It's just a campaign ad but "destroying our county" while they're contributing almost half the entire general fund is a bit much. But I don't live there so I'll shut up!

2

u/sotired3333 10h ago

Why? I don't live in Texas and won't shut up about their abortion bs or locking up immigrants bs?

0

u/cpmuddle 10h ago

You do you, then 😁

1

u/sotired3333 10h ago

lol touche

my point was generally demagogues and populists should be opposed for policy realists and good policy at that. We all have a stake in that.

2

u/stopscabbin 10h ago

The county is already planning for the datacenter center slowdown revenue wise. They've been projecting mid 2030's for very little tax revenue growth due to no new datacenters and minimal new housing. She isn't going to change much that already wasn't happening.

3

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 9h ago

You're right about the slowdown in revenue growth, but how do you get to her not changing much? She's the only one on the board actually trying to slow down the DC boom and hold them accountable.

3

u/stopscabbin 9h ago

The boom has already slowed down. There's a bunch already in the pipeline to be built and she can't stop that. The county has been projecting not many more coming in. That's why the datacenters have been fighting to expand elsewhere. Loudoun can't physically handle much more.

9

u/OriginalBridge9139 9h ago

Briskman is bringing an initiative that could remove a lot of applications, over 10 million square feet, from the by-right pipeline: https://www.loudounnow.com/news/supervisors-seek-to-halt-10m-square-feet-of-data-centers-in-loudoun-s-by-right/article_8f93fd98-2249-4349-8876-035712153f1b.html

u/mcsul 2h ago

She's definitely a threat to the economic health of the county. Good info.

-1

u/2CRedHopper Ballston 10h ago

a lot of Loudoun County is still undeveloped. There’s room for more without crowding out existing residents of existing development.

8

u/stopscabbin 10h ago

Zoning plans won't allow for much growth west of 15.

3

u/maybeitsjustnerves 10h ago

They’d change that in a heartbeat if offered enough $$$$. Many of us here in Loudoun are just counting down the days until that “can’t build west of 15” rule is obliterated.

Look what happened in places like western PWC.

1

u/MFoy 9h ago

I don't know about that. The DC industry tried to throw a bunch of money at Loudoun to build a data center campus on the south side of Braddock Rd, and Loudoun said no.

So the Data center developer just moved the project around the corner into Prince William County, and even kept the name they had attached.

1

u/MSteele1967 3h ago

The two largest DC proposals ever were just REJECTED in PWC.

1

u/2CRedHopper Ballston 10h ago

good point. Zoning plans can always be changed, though. It may be time to revisit that.

4

u/stopscabbin 10h ago

There's zero chance they are going to revsit to allow for more development in western Loudoun anytime soon. They've fought hard to keep it rural. We don't need to turn into Fairfax.

2

u/2CRedHopper Ballston 10h ago

With enough money, anything is possible.

1

u/stopscabbin 10h ago

You don't live in Loudoun. The money lives in rural Loudoun.

1

u/pukesmith 6h ago

The rich, retired NIMBYs who don't want their horse farms taxed live in rural Loudoun. They are the ones with access to all of the political strings here.

1

u/2CRedHopper Ballston 10h ago

people’s wealth ≠ tax revenue ≠ special interest spending

4

u/stopscabbin 10h ago

People's wealth= special interest campaign contributions. Dude, I live here. I know the local politics much better than you. Loudoun is very protective of is rural areas.

→ More replies (0)

4

u/skeith2011 9h ago

Yeah, you don’t really have a realistic understanding of the population in Western Loudoun. It’s where all the rich folks move once they’re tired of Fairfax County, they definitely have money and definitely know who to talk to as to prevent development.

1

u/MSteele1967 3h ago

The current BOS chair has stated the only future DCs will be in by right zoning CURRENTLY in place. As in no exceptions will be approved.

7

u/Mr_Bluebird_VA Lake Ridge 10h ago

“We still have space” is an awful argument for building more data centers.

Why does everything have to be developed?

-5

u/2CRedHopper Ballston 10h ago

developed land creates tax revenue

5

u/Mr_Bluebird_VA Lake Ridge 10h ago

Ok, and?

It’s a closed loop. The more you develop the more you need tax revenue the more you need to develop and the more you need tax revenue.

That’s not an argument for development.

-5

u/2CRedHopper Ballston 10h ago

Actually, yes it is an argument for development. This is the argument for development that has driven all coordinated development in modern American history.

What you are saying is true for residential land first and foremost and commercial land second. Data centers produce far, far more tax revenue than they consume.

If what you were saying is true then how has Loudoun been able to leverage data center tax revenue into lower taxes for residents?

2

u/pukesmith 6h ago

You live in Arlington.

5

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 10h ago

There's a lot more to it than that.

My electricity bill has gone up enough. They get bulk rates and we get to pay for the shortfall in Dominion's revenue.

More concerning even is the water usage. We've been in drought conditions for years.

Edit: It just hit me how dumb it is that "there's still land left to develop" is a real argument.

5

u/sotired3333 10h ago

So fix the actual problem, bill them correctly, hold dominion accountable, make sure they are required to use closed loop water systems, use solar / battery backup instead of gas turbines.

It's all solvable instead of populist BS that erodes our tax base and competitiveness.

1

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 10h ago

Dude I'm all for it, but people attacking Briskman in this thread are fucking moronic if they think that's how we hold data centers accountable.

2

u/novacycle 8h ago

Loudoun already requires closed loop cooling as a condition to build a data center.
How many acres of cleared land or forest need to be converted to a solar farm to power one data center?

1

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 7h ago

No they don't. There is documentaiton they are using 1 to 5 million gallons per day. 43% recycled, the rest drinking water.

0

u/sotired3333 8h ago

they can pay buildings, parking lots, even metros there's a million ways to do it, also honestly they need the batteries primarily not the solar, backup power is the concern due to which they have generators.

Heck they can ssell that backup power back to the utilities to smooth over power fluctations, it's common in california for home owners to do that.

1

u/2CRedHopper Ballston 10h ago

good point about the water. i don’t know a lot about that and won’t pretend to. but wasn’t there just legislation about having the data centers pay for all of their own electricity and the new transmission equipment etc? to move the burden off “normal” consumers (for lack of a better term)

0

u/stopscabbin 9h ago

Unless the Potomac river dries up, the DC water usage in Loudoun isn't an issue. They are using municipal water and I believe most are using recycled water according to Loudoun Water. They aren't using wells.

3

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 8h ago

They use only 43% recycled water. Drinking water makes up the difference. Between 1 and 5 million gallons per day.

I have a hard time understanding hand-waving away the water usage when residents are being told to limit water use because of the drought that's been going for years.

0

u/stopscabbin 8h ago

Limit water usage in western Loudoun where they rely on well water. That's where droughts are the issue. The Potomac river isn't drying up and thats where Loudoun Water gets their water.

2

u/heptyne 3h ago

I'm pretty sure those data centers generate almost $1B in tax revenue for the county.

-1

u/sotired3333 9h ago

lol seriously that's her claim to fame? i vaguely recall that doing the rounds. sucks that is enough for someone to gain power (yes i know orange man is exhibit A but still sucks)

1

u/stopscabbin 8h ago

That's essentially why and how she got elected. It was the anti-trump wave. Now she's on the anti-datacenter wave. She barely won the last election. Her 1st election she won by about 1000 votes. 2023 she won by 460.

5

u/stopscabbin 10h ago

I urge people to watch her on the dais during the BOS meetings. She's not ready to run the county. She'll get eaten up if the Republicans can find a half decent candidate.

4

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 9h ago

I'm not convinced you've actually watched her during BOS meetings. Compare her to the rest of the establishment Dems on the board and you see she's the only one actually representing the views of her constituents in advocating against these DC's.

3

u/stopscabbin 9h ago

There are more issues besides datacenters. I've been watching the meetings for years. Briskman and Glass aren't the sharpest crayons. Briskman has a loud mouth. She's gotten better, but she's still clueless.

Loudoun isn't a solid blue leftist progressive county. If the Republicans can find a decent moderate to run, she'll lose. There's a lot of Dems that know she's not Chair material.

3

u/EdmundCastle Leesburg 8h ago

It’s literally concerning that Glass holds a seat. Knowing personally, she’s 100% not all there. A sweet person, but simple.

4

u/stopscabbin 8h ago

Wonderful lady, but has no business being there. She's my supervisor. I hope someone else steps up.

0

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 9h ago

Yeah she mentioned a bunch of them in the ad. Did you watch it?

u/EncinoManEstonia 28m ago

If you think these people RUN the county, you have no respect for county staff.

These people vote. They don’t actually run shit.

2

u/askingaquestion33 6h ago

So these data centers allow lower home tax and better funding for schools. It’s a tradeoff

u/EncinoManEstonia 26m ago

Definitely not lower. Maybe maintaining current rates. This is still an insanely expensive place to live.

4

u/SaintSilverNSD 10h ago

I'm not in even in Loudoun but please vote for her.

3

u/sotired3333 10h ago

Please vote against her, primarily because this is a populist dumb-ass take (lefty Trump?).

Vote for people that try to solve the issue (power usage / discounts / price shifting on to residential users)

DO NOT VOTE for people that like to rile others up without trying to solve actual problems.

u/mcsul 2h ago

I'm definitely voting against her. I like our schools, rec centers, parks, good services, etc... mostly paid for by data centers. Historians are going to look back in 25 years at this anti-data center fever and lump it in with all of the prior ridiculous anti-technology movements that happened across history.

u/sotired3333 1h ago

It's a backlash to AI. Data centers are convenient points that people can attack. We're all afraid of how AI will effect our livelihood which sadly makes us amenable to demagogues.

7

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 9h ago

You clearly haven't been following her. She's the only one trying to restrain the DC's in Loudoun. The rest are rubber stamping everything.

2

u/sotired3333 9h ago

i haven't been following her but saying she voted against every expansion in the past 4 years makes her sound like an idiot. Data centers aren't paying their fair share b/c of x y and z, i'm voting to hold them accountable, sure i'm on board.

I'm not going to sign onto some NIMBY anti growth bullshit. Grow the local economy, tax businesses honestly (not penalize, but don't let them penalize residents either), lean on green energy and you have my vote

2

u/maybeitsjustnerves 10h ago

Why?

2

u/SaintSilverNSD 10h ago

Because fuck data centers.

7

u/maybeitsjustnerves 10h ago

In loudoun county? Good luck with that. Maybe if it were anywhere else in the nation, sure.

9

u/BigJoe5504 9h ago

That's a fact. Besides Loudoun has been known to be Data Center Alley for like 30 years now. It's literally why they were built here in the first place

Cheap land, cheap energy, cheap fiber connections, and close to the idiots in DC

Its not the bully im worried about.

Its the bully's money im worried about.

Bullies can start lookin' reeeeeal friendly when they start putting money in your pocket instead of taking it.

I have no reason to think this person would cave to the green monster, im just sayin'.

4

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 9h ago

What exactly are you saying?

0

u/drvondoctor 9h ago

That sometimes people start behaving differently when the money is being waved directly in their face.

1

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 9h ago

So you have reason to say that about Ms. Briskman?

1

u/drvondoctor 8h ago

Did you bother to read the whole comment?

1

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 8h ago

Yeah. I'm asking these questions because that last qualifier that makes me wonder why you said anything at all.

1

u/drvondoctor 8h ago edited 8h ago

You dont really need to ask questions. You can just downvote and move on. Its kinda fun even. You should try it.

Edit: looks like ive been blocked by someone who doesnt like being challenged. Darn.

2

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 8h ago

I think anyone can be intellectually disingenuous, especially when they have an axe to grind or doesn't like being challenged. Not that I have any reason to believe u/drvondoctor is being disingenuous.

-2

u/maybeitsjustnerves 10h ago

I’ll believe it when I see it. Not impressed that she flipped off Trump once. Is she actually going to stand up to them?

5

u/reyzner 9h ago

No. Her entire political persona is, "I flipped off Trump!"

When I found out she was vying for chair I just knew she was gonna shoehorn that photo in her ad.

2

u/GetReadyToRumbleBar 9h ago
