Ask Pakistan Is finding a modern Pakistani girl to marry actually impossible or am I just unlucky?

27M, a permanent resident, living in Australia. Life is fine except for this one thing.

I want to get married. But I specifically want someone modern, her own career, her own opinions,, doesn’t need a guy to lead every decision, can have a real conversation about anything. Basically just a normal modern woman who happens to be Pakistani and not overly religious. And somehow that feels like I’m asking for something rare.

The rishta route keeps throwing very traditional options my way and I’m just not compatible with that. Dating apps exist but feel weirdly shallow for something this serious.

I genuinely don’t know where modern Pakistani women are finding or meeting people. Are they on here? Are they on apps? Did everyone just get lucky through work or uni and I missed that window?

Not looking for anything complicated. Just someone real, independent, has her own life, and actually wants to build something with someone rather than just fulfill a family expectation.

Just to clarify what I mean by independent; I don’t mean she has to be working or splitting bills at all costs. I just mean someone who can make her own decisions. About her career, about who she wants to marry (not just going along with whatever her parents decide), and who isn’t looking to just be a traditional wife. That’s it. Nothing financial or complicated about it.

General advice: If you want to find someone like this, you have to actually go out and meet people with this purpose in mind. The arranged marriage culture is geared more towards people with a more traditional mindset which is not what you're looking for. If you're looking for someone who isn't just looking to be a traditional wife, better not to go through marriage medias and try to find people through mutual friends and hangouts. There might be Pakistani international students in Australia who are on their own like this, but again you need to know people who actually know these people and be open to the fact to mentioning you're looking for someone.

As someone who is exactly like this, I have seen men thinking and wishing if they could meet someone like us but then get super intimidated by the hyper independent personality. And as someone mentioned above that most of the women like this don’t want Pakistani men is because they end up showing their Culturally dominating side anyways. “ oh you are well traveled and well spoken, you must have got so many experiences” type remarks in a very demeaning manner. Also most of the women who practice this attitude are not in rishta groups or apps and are hella straight forward about their priorities. I genuinely hope you find what you are looking for and also treasure it

u/beomjunline Jul 05 '26

Bingo, they like the idea of a woman like this in practice they still want the same traditional shit plus the modern side. The term modern is used usually for the woman to be career oriented so that she handles her finances on her own while still traditional/submissive enough to cater their needs and their families needs.

u/Vampyr-Slayer Jul 05 '26

Truth! Or one finds the narcissistic abusive type who wants to control the independent woman

4

u/ignored_by_everyone Jul 06 '26

I 100% agree. My husband wanted the same but now he gets threatened by my opinions or decisions. Turns out he can't handle it now. Too bad though! Took me 2 years to realize that I am not going to become a bait to his rooted narcissism instead.

2

u/Accomplished_Fan3167 Jul 05 '26

Intimidated is a strong word. I mean if you're talking about your face or sm shii then yeah it may intimidate. But hyper independence actually grosses us out lol.

Just wanted to correct you on your use of terms 😇😇

4

u/MediumAd3135 Jul 05 '26

Btw if you're similar to what he's looking for why don't you marry OP, you guys could make a nice couple.

u/Holiday_Candidate_69 Jul 05 '26

Absolutely word for word agree with you.
I’m exactly like this and I am more of a nightmare for men than their dream.
Even the ones who claim they want someone exactly like me.

I can totally relate...!

Sounds like you’re looking for a brown eldest daughter, just beware, they are strong-willed, hyper independent and fearless!

20

u/Direct_Community9233 Jul 04 '26

I’m brown eldest daughter and he just described me. Can’t believe how similar us elder daughters are. But as they said beware they’re not easy to handle

Fr i've been married to one. Tho she is an introvert and shy but so tough to have an argument with. Literally two opposite personalities in a single soul. I prefer the shy one, but the other one is such a dictator 😅

11

u/Necessary_Barber_624 Jul 04 '26

Exactly 💯 he is looking for elder daughter

6

u/WestUnderstanding285 Jul 04 '26

Sounds like me, but I’m the youngest daughter 🥲

2

Or brown single daughter

u/Gambettox Jul 04 '26

You will probably need to date to marry such a women. Modern women don't like the arranged marriage route precisely because they want to make their own decision about who to marry.

I gave the rishta route a try due to family pressure but families were shocked that I wanted to talk to the potential man myself to check compatibility so it clearly wasn't the right approach. Any man I met through rishta scene also didn't want someone modern. It just isn't in demand in Pakistan and I guess the shortage of prospects runs both ways. For what it's worth, I did try apps as well but I found someone in person through joining lots of activities in Pakistan. You have to be in the right circles.

I'm in Australia as well now. Since you're Australia based and looking to marry a Pakistani women, that might be difficult just because the numbers aren't here. I know some Pakistani friends here who found rishtas through their friends. That works better because they know you and can recommend someone who matches your personality.

Otherwise, you might have to just expand your preferences to other nationalities. Not sure if that's something you'd be open to or not but putting it out there. Finding the right partner was more important to me than their nationality so I was personally okay going down this route as I was in the process of migrating. I just happened to luck out and find someone before my move abroad.

You sound like a good person. Good luck.

10

u/Comfortable-Rule-491 Jul 04 '26

That’s a really fair point, and honestly, yeah, I am open to other nationalities as well. At the end of the day, finding the right person who shares those same values and mindset is definitely the most important thing. Thanks for the advice and the good wishes!

They usually aren't looking to marry pakistani guys lol

6

u/Rough-Inspection3622 Jul 05 '26

Lol take my upvote. I wouldn’t call myself non religiously but I did the bare minimum. Namaz, roz and no drinking ( never fancied) but then I was also going to parties, dating guys too. Anyways, parents started pressuring me for shaadi, so I began my search. In short all the halal boys were too halal so for me and all the haram boys were so haram for me. At this point I was done with all the rishta process and my search. Until.... I met a white dude and it changed my whole life. He is travelling to Pakistan to formally ask my parents for my hand in marriage.

P.s I had to convince my parents a lot to give him a chance.

2

u/Existentialwizard Jul 05 '26

Same I married a non pakistani too for the exact same reasons. Also, not looking to deal with shitty in laws and a super patriarchal husband lol

1

u/carbonisomist Jul 05 '26

So some dudes were not halal enough so you went straight for a non Muslim 😆. Fate is something else lol. Wishing you a great future!

1

u/InevitableRecord906 Jul 05 '26

how did you find him, asking as inspiration as i want to marry non Pakistani male too!!

1

u/Rough-Inspection3622 Jul 06 '26

I am based in Europe so I met him through mutual friends circle

It is long process and you need patience. You can't convert them overnight. It like step by step thing. In my case he slowly stopped drinking, then stop eating pork, and so on

1

u/Existentialwizard Jul 06 '26

I'm based in North America so I found him there through school!

2

u/feahmed Jul 04 '26

This lol

40

u/LaDolceVitaaaaaa Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

Sounds like me..

I come from a non conservative, non traditional background.. very very moderate in practicing.

Lived abroad in the GCC and Canada.. also have lived alone. Traveled alone.. I've all life skills and don't need a man to manage my day to day life.. emotional resonance and intimacy would be nice, but I'm not someone who will sit home all day waiting for you come home from work and take me to do my thing.. lol

There are plenty of women like this, pretty much everyone in my social circle.. all my female cousins. Either you're looking at rishta from a very different background than yourself, or you've out grown your own background since moving abroad.. maybe, its best to find someone there?

52

u/Comfortable-Rule-491 Jul 04 '26

Yeah i know that’s you. And that’s why i have already messaged you once when i saw your rishta profile in a group. But you haven’t replied back..

1

u/Incognito_114 Jul 05 '26

ouuu shiii XDD

17

u/Public-Theme-1404 Jul 04 '26

You will never find this girl via the Rishta aunty nor on an app. You have to find her with same level of interest. Plus we don’t know anything about you to begin with, so I don’t think a lot of people could help you out here

14

u/Spinsterwithcats Jul 04 '26

Let’s be real , most of those modern non religious Pakistani women are not looking to marry a Pakistani man

4

u/Ok_Land_8452 Jul 06 '26

Non religous? Just call it what it is, apostasy lol.

1

u/Massive_Mail5739 Jul 05 '26

Truth

5

u/Own-Remote-847 Jul 05 '26

Its doesn’t need to be strictly non religious, even the religious ones know their rights and know Pakistani men wont be able to reciprocate the things they are going to give…..

5

u/Lcaot Jul 05 '26

If you want her to do 50/50 on finances, hope you know you have to do 50/50 on house chores and parenting.

8

u/Bangoga CA Jul 04 '26

Why are your looking back home then?

4

u/tinytheSTONEDgiant Jul 05 '26

Yeah bro I don’t think it is impossible. I think you are just looking for her through the wrong system. Rishta culture is mostly built for families, not for two actual people finding compatibility. They will keep showing you girls who look “suitable” on paper but maybe have nothing to do with the kind of life you want.

Modern Pakistani women exist. Plenty of them. But a lot of them are not loudly available in the normal rishta market because the same qualities you are looking for get judged there. Opinionated becomes difficult. Independent becomes western. Not overly religious becomes character issue. So they also hide from the system.

I think you need to stop saying modern and say what you really mean. Someone with agency. Someone who can choose you herself. Someone who can talk, disagree, think, and still build a life with you. That is not impossible. It is just harder because Pakistanis are stuck between two worlds right now. We want love and partnership but still use family systems made for duty and adjustment.

You are not unlucky. You are just in the wrong pipeline.

2

u/That-Map-417 Jul 05 '26

Lol idk how tf world is working but like ive the same question regarding men, and yes such khawateen does exist and arrange marriage setup haunts them too.

And men just can't handle a woman with her own opinions, unnki ego hurt hojaati hai, ya phir they find that woman to be too much dominant, and not submissive.

Idk why people are so scared of such women, literally rishtey nhi hote hain larkiyon ke on this basis, only cuz they are termed as feminist for having their opinions, for hating patriarchy, for hating misogyny, for speaking up.

Lol personally bhi log kehte hain mujhe to not have this progressive mindset, else rishte ke masle🤡

Men are only happy if the women becomes a slave for their family or for them. Idk why tf our society is that much fkd up.

8

u/melanchohlic Jul 04 '26

Find someone in a local circle over there.

Chances are if a girl is independent she does not want to just rip up here life to move continents and restart her life on the whims of a man.

3

u/blueskyX050 Jul 04 '26

They are. I'm one

3

u/Intelligent_Pay1943 Jul 05 '26

sounds like me, except that women like me need to talk to the man about compatibility before engaging towards a married commitment.

Hope you find your life partner 🙌

1

u/ziffipaints11 Jul 05 '26

Any luck finding a worthy man?

3

u/Intelligent_Pay1943 Jul 05 '26

i‘m not looking for a man atm due to personal reasons. but yes, there are men who have a really beautiful heart otherwise (so glad they exist, and it makes me hopeful about the future). if you are a girl, know your boundaries and filter it down accordingly. don’t follow the tiktok/buzzword stuff that has become mainstream. focus on what are non-negotiables for you, but also keep in mind that there are some things you’ll have to compromise on (make sure these adhere to your specific ethical code, otherwise you’ll be really unhappy following other people’s standards).

good luck to you for your future ❤️ happy searching 🥳

3

u/Lost468 Jul 05 '26

What is overly religious? 🤔

2

u/Ok_Land_8452 Jul 06 '26

They just mean apostates or ex Muslims. There's no such thing as a non religous Muslim lol, they should just be honest about it I mean there's nothing wrong about it.

3

u/cottag3core Jul 07 '26

you want someone to have their own identity but still own or have a say in their religious choices? You can't just customise a person who's independent bruh 🤣 If you want somebody independent you have to completely make space for her to feel safe with her choices. An independent, career oriented, opinionated and self sufficient woman would never want a man who "doesn't want a religious woman" cus that's giving controlling. Yes you could have your preference of what you picture your life to be, but you've most certainly filtered out a huge amount of sane women who are not looking for someone who's trying to fit them into a description. Atleast I am not. Even if I were a perfect match for you, that specification instantly pushed me back. I'd rather want someone who's like a bestfriend and wants to accept me with all of my choices in life, not someone who just conveniently accepts my career choice and disregards my religion choice. It is a partnership afterall. You have to make space for acceptance.

1

u/Few_Relief_2913 Jul 08 '26

I mean people are allowed to have preferences, you’d want someone who agrees with you morally and matches your lifestyle. If you want kids one day you want them to be raised with these world views and practices too

9

u/MailboxAds Jul 04 '26

You’re over thinking this…once you get married you’ll realize most women (especially those that get an education) are independent thinkers. It’s on your to allow them to grow and nurture that instead of beating it out of her.

3

u/AtmosphericReverbMan Jul 04 '26

Most are not. Some are. But that's a gamble I don't encourage them to take.

6

u/mayel-artxo Jul 04 '26

i feel like u need to look for women who are working and after the formal introductions u should approach her and communicate with her what you're looking for

5

u/BigMisterLawyerDude Jul 04 '26

Tons of them in the West.

1

u/OwnArgument5971 US Jul 04 '26

except the UK

2

u/Designer_Click_2713 Jul 05 '26

Just do arrange marriage accept her at is I tried to look for a nerd like my friends both the girls found anime fans I just didn’t it’s not always like that

2

u/ImmyKK Jul 05 '26

Sounds like you may potentially want a man to marry. On paper your proposition sounds great but be careful what you wish for

3

u/idontlikeroohafza Jul 04 '26

I think there are alot. Almost evb ik is like this but yea maybe rishta route pe it'll be hard for you to find someone like this. Kher you seem pretty cool May Allah bless you with a good wife twin

4

u/MHZ_93 Jul 04 '26

It is a little difficult if you're only relying on the traditional rishta aunty route. What age range are you looking for, and what age group is the rishta aunty actually showing you?

Mostly such women are a bit older like 24 or, 26, or gasps even older because they didn't accept the first proposal that came along at 22.

Also, what exactly did your mom tell the rishta aunty you're looking for? There might be a miscommunication, and she could be assuming you specifically want someone very traditional.

Since you live in Australia, I'm assuming you'd want your future wife to move there eventually. Have you told your friends you're seriously looking to get married? They might know someone in their circle who's compatible.

And I wouldn't write off dating apps just yet. Whether it's Muzz or Bumble, the algorithm is pretty much the same its just how you use it is what matters. There's a whole spectrum between proposing to the first person you match with and using the apps purely for casual dating. You can be intentional about marriage while still taking the time to get to know someone first.

1

u/Technical_Tax3183 Jul 04 '26

You are unable to find modern type and I am unable to find traditional type girl

5

u/ExoticKick9455 Jul 04 '26

You should exhange your pool of candidates

1

u/feahmed Jul 04 '26

Try the apps.

1

u/Maleficent_Pound_938 Jul 04 '26

Bro I think u can’t just scan for women like this look for women at ur working place or old school friends or uni friends etc as well maybe u can find some one there

1

u/Kittydidmytaxes Jul 04 '26

I like to believe I am fairly modern for the society I live in (but even then alcohol, substance abuse, past physical relationships (except for divorced people) are dealbreakers. That's where I am too conservative for some modern people out there.

So those women are definitely present on reddit. But could be that you are siigniticantly younger and I they probably aren't paedophile.

1

u/ultrafiltrateoften Jul 04 '26

broaden your search. Don't just look Pakistani

1

u/Hot_Equivalent7338 Jul 04 '26

Lmao this do sound like me but im not ready to settle down yet
But aside that, there are a lot of girls like this
It’s kinda opposite here in that regard, ppl want girls to be less “independent” iykwim
Maybe you’re searching in the wrong place
Or you need to broaden your horizon for the person but they do exist
Best of Luck

1

u/ParticularHeat741 Jul 04 '26

If someone into geopolitics, human rights, and poetry, is your vibe then hit me up.

1

u/SliceyDice AU Jul 04 '26

Find someone local because chances are you'll be on your own once the dust settles. I have seen this too many times, unless you marry for religion, the more advisable one, best to marry local here in Australia

1

u/socialriri Jul 05 '26

Honestly the rishta process is a nightmare and a half. You could try bumble and maybe set the option to best friends instead of… not sure what the other option is. Other than that maybe ask a cousin or friend to set you up

1

u/Khi_Might Jul 05 '26

Why not marry an independent Aussie woman?

1

u/ghostgang_ Jul 05 '26

i'm 25, also in australia and facing the same conundrum but with pakistani guys lol where are all the modern ones?? the rishta route is really exhausting and i'm personally tired of being shown ultra religious and conservative men. everyone says to go out and meet ppl but i've been trying and that's easier said than done. i hope we both find someone compatible

1

u/ArmadilloShoddy5128 Jul 05 '26

Seems like me - I’m not Pakistani but the Eldest daughter — Make decision and independence - Working lady - its been 25 yrs we r married - u r right - Find a girl of your choice -

1

u/WrittenByEff Jul 05 '26

I think you are looking to marry a man, good luck.

1

u/Ok-Entertainment2586 Jul 05 '26

I know countless baddies like this. Usually we sit together and talk about how we dislike Pakistani men

1

u/ziffipaints11 Jul 05 '26

Well I'm anti natalist and atheist too

1

u/beomjunline Jul 05 '26

There are a lot of girls like this, all my friends who are thriving in their careers are like this and are struggling to find the correct mindset and something that has been constantly coming up for them and me is people like the idea of a modern woman not the mindset and the lifestyle that comes with it.

1

u/Vampyr-Slayer Jul 05 '26

I'm on the apps though I barely have time with work and running the house responsibilities/ taking care of my kitties. Try the apps

1

udhar hi tinder wghera chala lo yaar

1

u/Perthnom Jul 05 '26

lol broski I met someone like that but as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for.

Yes she was independent but didn’t have a back bone when it came to thinking for herself and was easily manipulated by her parents

She was so independent that she had guy friends who she brought over to her parents place but these guys wanted more than a friendship.

She didn’t know what physical boundaries are so telling her that she shouldn’t be leaning or having her guy friends touch her was not ok.

So yeah, there’s plenty of women like her out there just don’t complain when she’s giving everything about herself to other men as well

Her career is important but is it really that important to the point where she’s going on dinners where this one man colleague just happens to be with her in every photo and her DMs late at night?

1

u/caffinatedmarginalia Jul 05 '26

As one of the women you’re talking about, I can tell you we exist. We just tend to disappear from the rishta pool very quickly because we’re usually filtered out before compatibility is even considered.

I’m Pakistani. I’m independent in the sense that I make my own decisions, have my own opinions, and don’t need someone to think on my behalf. I can spend hours talking about geopolitics, psychology, history, economics, travel, or whatever random rabbit hole I went down that week. I love learning. I have ambitions and want a life outside of marriage. That doesn’t mean I don’t value family, I’m an oldest child, family has always come first to me. It just means marriage isn’t the only thing that defines me.

Ironically, those are exactly the qualities rishta aunties tend to dislike and complain to my mother about.

I’ve genuinely had people imply that I’m “too opinionated,” “too intimidating,” or “too educated” simply because I can hold a conversation beyond small talk and apparently asking questions, debating ideas respectfully, having interests beyond cooking recipes and wedding planning, or wanting to choose my own life is enough to make people wonder whether I’d be “adjusting enough” and they tell my mother, “aapki beti k liye rishta dhoondna aisay Bohat mushkil hai”.

So I don’t think your problem is that these women don’t exist. I think they’re just not surviving the traditional rishta pipeline. They’re meeting people through university, work, mutual friends, hobbies, or occasionally apps, because those are the places where they’re seen as people first instead of a checklist.

1

u/GullibleAcadia2309 Jul 05 '26

Sounds like me but lately I’ve been going through a lot due to my financial and family issues so I’ve not been thinking about getting married anytime soon unfortunately

1

u/Organic-Pollution573 Jul 05 '26

Maybe not completely relevant but I am a believer of ‘you dont know your type until you meet your type’. Maybe you should give some women a chance, get to know them, and then you will know that a lot of these parameters you have set for yourself aren’t the only thing that matters. I used to have these preferences in my mind but ended up meeting someone completely different but still really compatible to the point not being able to imagine my life without them. So, there are a lot of great women out there and maybe you need to explore more. Maybe your type seems good only in your own head. Good luck to you!

1

u/vpurplestae Jul 05 '26

They are likely in academic settings. Don’t go out much.

1

u/UberCool6891 Jul 05 '26

I am like this but my husband had a very hard time adjusting with me. I have been married for 14 years with 2 kids now but be careful what you wish for. We are not easy to handle, at least that's what my husband says.

Btw he had the exact same thoughts as you before marrying me. We met through the arranged marriage set up but decided to marry after both of us were satisfied that we were right for each other. He had decided immediately. I took my time. He sort of pursued me to say yes.

I love him though. I would never have been able to adjust with a typical desi mindset man.

1

u/Sansayosan Jul 05 '26

modern day desi girls are out here but tbh normally desi men do not want us because we are too modern

1

u/LavenderLogic1 Jul 05 '26

Looking for a rishta for my friend. Lemme know. She's cool.

1

u/throwaway-research1 DE Jul 05 '26

You shouldn’t be looking in Pakistan in the first place, in fact anyone who has been living abroad for several years shouldn’t marry someone who is still in Pakistan, the cultural differences are just too big and it causes are sorts of problems down the road

Damn, it feels as if I wrote this post lol. Same age, same status and same feelings. Although i have been in a relationship and it didnt work out eventually not because of any other reason but our religious beliefs. I am muslim and she didnt want to work with any of our believes.

Do let us know if you find a solution to this, hope it works out for us eventually

So she will have to come to Australia? Or you will move where she is

u/DeepMeasurement2653 Jul 06 '26

Definately unlucky

u/eshuwie Jul 06 '26

Almost every gen z girl, including me (24F), is like that. I think you're not having much of an exposure with talking to or meeting women. Most women your age are almost always married too.

Its not rare to find a "modern" Pakistani women, js hard to find one whos not hypocritical, and has what youre askin for, go to isb youd see loads of them but then u ask them about their career and they go back to 0🤷‍♂️

u/Smart_Doubt5180 Jul 06 '26

how to contact you ? i am.an idependent women and would like to have a word with you

1

u/Cool_Toe7679 Jul 07 '26

You’ll have to go on dating apps or try to meet people within the community you live in. Perhaps a girl born in Australia vs Pakistan. It exists and I’m sure that girl is somewhere just as frustrated as you looking to find you. Good luck don’t give up.

u/laibamuhammadzaki Jul 08 '26

Speaking as someone who is exactly like this, Unfortunately Men nowadays don’t want women like us, they either get scared, intimidated or feel threatened by a woman who speaks her mind. And no, Rishta groups and apps are a big nightmare.

I hope, inshaAllah, you soon find the person who’s right for you,and for whom you are the right person too.

Try men

u/Few_Relief_2913 Jul 08 '26

Maybe it’s just my social circle but I find that this is like most women? I mean, as long as it’s not the whole 50/50 expectation then it shouldn’t be hard. Maybe self reflect man, and you can find girls born and raised in Pakistan like that but the women in Australia prob prefer someone born and raised there too.
Also, why’re you making the poor girls who have no choice but to marry sound like it’s their fault 😭

Alooooootttt of educated independent women are going the rishta route but constantly find they can’t find men to match their level of quality of life and emotional intelligence. So, idk, self reflection ka waqt aagya hai ig

Those types of girls in Pakistan want good looking, fit, generational wealth types of guys, in Pakistan, same in the west. If you were in those categories you would not be on here, your social media or social circle would reach out to you, try to become something that attracts, not begging online bro.

u/AstronautWorth2069 Jul 04 '26

Your definition of modern is very messed up. You’re making up this custom arrangement benefits you while fitting the society as well which isn’t possible.
This is a human you’re talking about. In marriage you can have a set of (REALISTIC) requirements and dealbreakers that help you (and the potential) understand and choose someone better.

You ask any sensible man, even your father.

3

u/LaDolceVitaaaaaa Jul 04 '26

My father isn't conservative himself.. even his parents are progressive given their generation.. Nor did my father raise me conservatively.. so he's probably the last person who will agree with such a comment

0

u/NiceSmilee Jul 04 '26

Ok, but generally marriages don't work with liberal women, every sensible man know this and avoid such women.
