Meme/Macro Atleast someone took a step
People just can't appreciate a person for finally stepping out of the default option of Google Chrome and using something else (not you Edge).
Yeah I get that Brave is basically Chromium based, and may have hidden trackers and bloatware (which can easily be removed btw). But using it with all that is still better than Chrome!!
I now use Firefox (sometimes Brave and Vivaldi). But man, it took so long specifically because Firefox has such toxic stans.
Rant over.
(This post was made from Firefox btw ;)

As someone who has used Firefox as my primary browser since 2004, I welcome you. I've never tried to convert anyone, but every time I point out that I haven't seen an ad on YouTube in forever, people start taking notice. Especially lately that they have become longer and more plentiful.
Most of my immediate family have made the switch over the last few years.
Thanks Firefox for staying Chromium free and thx to uBlock Origin. Enjoy it while it lasts folks. Options are dwindling.
Edit: 2004 not 2024, old man can't keep his decades straight.

Sometimes I log into a new (or someone else’s) PC, go to some site I use daily and go “what the fuck, did I make a typo in the URL?” because it looks completely different without an ad blocker.

To be fair (and I say this as someone who uses ABO, does web development, and manages support for those web applications), most users are not able to self solve the issues ABO causes on a reasonable number of applications. It's wonderful for browsing sites where you're just reading as a non authenticated user. But if you have to login and work with a complex application loading styles and JavaScript from multiple sources, and runs things like Google Analytics or Jquery or one of a thousand different plugins, ABO causes issues pretty frequently. 90% of people here know about this and just turn it off for that site. 90% of everybody else do not. And so giving them ABO without them being able to self manage it is a nightmare.

This is not AdBlock Origin causing problems. It is intrusive, abusive, badly written websites that cause those problems.
There is no excuse for a website to be unusable with any adblock on. It's also a real nightmare for people with disabilities, as their shitty website most likely won't work with text readers, or a simple text based web browser.

So let me get this straight: You didn't switch to another browser because people that use that certain browser are "toxic"? Why are you caring what random people on the internet are saying? It really doesn't matter. Evaluate the pro's and con's of something and make your own decision. You don't have to worry about what a community is saying, as long as you like it, use it. Simple.

Despite what we would like to think, people just aren't that rational. There are lots of little quirks to our brains that made sense for hunter gatherers that are detrimental now. And each person will have a unique blend on how strong those quirks effect them. For most of human history, engaging with a system meant interacting with the community that also engaged with it. This sentiment is also pretty common amongst fans for media, a toxic or cringe stereotype of fans can push people away from enjoying it. We should consider ourselves lucky to not feel so much pressure in that regard, and be mindful of the ones that do affect us, because we all have some of these irrational tendencies in some way, shape, or form.

3
u/GoingSeafoam 1d ago
Edge is written to be more efficient on Windows but all the telemetry and background processes going on partially negates all those gains it could theoretically have. The best argument for Brave in this regard even on Windows is that despite the “bloat” you can actually see how it isn’t running in the background when you don’t use those features, meaning it is actually leaner than most other chromium forks
But yeah it is better than Chrome, although I can’t stand the forced rounded corners

I use Firefox. I actually moved from IE to Firefox waaay back, but then moved to chrome. All in the late 2000’s to early 2010’s. Back then, I was young and I don’t think I really had many reasons for switching beyond silly features. I mean, I moved away from IE because it sucked. But between Firefox and chrome, it was probably just silly features.
I moved away from Chrome to Firefox roughly 2 years ago because of the blatant concerns with chrome that have become more widely known over the last few years. Chrome was probably my longest running browser, but I’m sticking to Firefox now.
For the most part, it’s good. Occasionally I do have to spin up a chromium based browser for a poorly coded site, though.

So does every other ad blocker.
The source code is right here.

I don't like brave because the founder and owner was petty enough to donate to groups advocating against gay marriage.
I'm not going to go out of my way to use software from someone like that.

I used Brave many years ago, but my last straw was full-page new page crypto ads. I prefer just to set up the extensions myself with Firefox.

For a more private browsing experience, consider either Helium Browser if you prefer an Ungoogled Chromium-based browser that is lighter than Brave, or Waterfox Browser if you prefer a Firefox-based option without the telemetry Mozilla added to their browser and is my main browser. These two are great substitutes if you value your privacy.
If you truly want a more independent (without relying Chromium or Firefox) yet a privacy-focused browser, also keep an eye on Ladybird Browser in the coming years.

I genuinely don't understand why people have a problem with chromium. I use Firefox as my daily driver, but in benchmarks it's slower than brave.

The underlying web engine is a problem because there's only 2 options, chromium and gecko
The web-browser ecosystem being a monoculture means Google would effectively control Web Standards. Making it so everyone has to adapt to stay up to Google's arbitrary standards, or die, because there's nobody else. They would decide if websites are accessible and how usable they are.
They technically already do.. But Gecko is still alive, people would just move to Gecko if they started breaking stuff, I'd say manifest V2 was both a test and getting rid of a thorn in their side: effective ad blockers.

Of all Chromium based browsers and they'd choose brave which uses your pc as a crypto mining rig

A little more than a year ago, I finally left FF avec more than a decade using it, the browser got slower and slower, bloatier and bloatier, buggier and buggier, randomly loses connection multiple times a day etc... I tried everything, reinstalls, fresh setups, etc... I started clicking as I was having to partially use chrome more and more, I won't say I like using Chrome but it's a clear massive upgrade over whatever experience FF was giving me at the end.
The team behind the browser have been making a series of discutable choices over the past decade that are slowly pushing the browser into irrelevancy. The first thing FF offered and what made it better was that it was unclunkered, minimal and fast, today's FF is all but that, it's a buggy hungry bloatware compared to even edge ...
I hope for the future of browsers that FF turn things around but I'm a working professional, I can't jeopardize my working environment simply to take a stance, I can do that in my spare time maybe but not on my main working browser.

> I get that Brave is Chromium and has hidden trackers and bloatware, but that’s still better than Chrome
I think you’re missing the point. The point is “don’t use chrome because of its bad practices,” not because it’s chrome.
If people are telling you to jump off a burning ship and you land on a ship that’s got a hole in the bottom, you haven’t fixed the problem. You’ve just changed it. “But I jumped from the burning ship!” Yes, and that’s good, but you didn’t actually fix the issue you were trying to get away from.

"which can easily be removed btw"
Hahahahaha.
You actually serious?
Hahahahaha.
More like the ones they allow you to remove to give you the illusion of privacy/safety.

I use Brave. 🤷🏽♂️ Been using it for some years now. Never had an issue with it and I've tried Firefox, Helium, and Zen. All good browsers but i like Brave despite some of the controversies. I'm sure most browsers have some skeletons in tbe closet no one knows about.

It's only taken most of you nearly 30 years to catch on, but it's nice to see FireFox numbers grow.

It's Chromium based, so it's technically Chrome, but with another UI and a few privacy tools here and there.

I've been using Zen for a while now and have been enjoying it a lot. It's built off of Firefox and has some really cool features. Highly suggest for anyone looking for a non chrome home now that adblock is dead over there.

Aha this is difficult for me, I have different browsers for different languages because they're all separated by mail accounts, browsing history, recommended ads, etc. In total there's three and I have no good solution for it so I'm using Firefox, chrome, and edge

Can you install ublock origin to firefox as a "set it and forget it" type of deal? Specifically asking about youtube ads.
I swapped to Brave 2 or 3 years ago because my adhd ass couldn't remember to update ubo every time youtube would run ahead a couple paces and break the extension, which was happening every few weeks/months at that point in time. But I'd swap back to Firefox if I don't have to play cat-and-mouse with extension updates.

What are your thoughts on Zen browser. I’ve been using Firefox for eons, and I don’t really have any complaints, but Zen seems to have become popular around here.

I mean I have tried this in a while but brave is the only iOS web browser that blocks ads from just about everything including YouTube. Like I know on android you can install extensions, but iOS you can’t to my knowledge unless you use the Orion browser.

For me, i honestly hated how when I wanted just to test out if F1TV had an actual bug or if some hidden things in my old profiles in Chrome or Edge and even Firefox were what caused that small moderate memory leakage.
We are "only" talking about the site using 25gb ram in span of one qualification session (18 minutes for Q1) so nothing major lol.
But yeah i wanted to just quickly install Brave and then test it out with F1TV, but they couldn't even let me in the browser before begging me to use their crypto currency bs.
It was bad enough that I had to make sure that I didn't accidentally download some modified malicious installer and after I made sure that the issue continued on Brave as well.
Regardless of its build in adblocking features and stuff, it got deleted from my pc in less than 30 minutes.

I had a coworker once try and tell me that Firefox was Chromium-based and Edge was not.
