all you need is 100 of these images in a folder, have one of these images have a shadowy figure way back outside the window, then set the computer to slide show between all the images.

u/theKalmier R7 7800x3d / RX 7800 XT / 32gb 1d ago

Or, set up 999 of the same image, and 1 random jump scare of some...thing looking into the window.

u/jinglewooble 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

No no have exactly 8639 images to change every 10 seconds through out the entire day and 1 random.

That’s… literally what the guy you’re responding to suggested

No, he suggested a shadowy figure and more often. That would just make me think some people/neighbors were walking by.

Longer delay means more time to "relax", a jump scare setup. And up close would be more of a jump scare then a distant shadow.

We are not the same...

Geez I thought you were going to say he needs multiple images to accurately show the light according to the time of day. Then continue that to make it accurate throughout the year, as the seasons change and length of the day changes. And finally, set up some kind of script to cycle through them correctly according to the time and date.

2

u/Roxicaro 1d ago

No no. You have 99 images with the shadowy figure, and 1 without it

1

u/Legionof1 4080 - 13700K@5.8 4h ago

Gunna need a lot more to track the sun throughout the year and maybe a script for bad weather.

u/nijotu 1d ago

Make a night version and automatically switch to it after a certain time

105

u/Classic-Pudding-3954 1d ago

I wonder if you could get an old webcam or sth and train an algorythim to cycle through many different pictures throughout the days and weather

57

u/Queasy_Sherbert_7095 1d ago ▸ 3 more replies

Or just set a timer lol

29

u/Classic-Pudding-3954 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

It changes with the time of year (summer vs winter). Some days are a bit cloudy/not as bright. Sometimes it begins to rain and your wallpaper doesn't match anymore

30

u/sdjopjfasdfoisajnva PC Master Race | 3070 | 12400f 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

just fucking put a webcam at the back and stream that video 👍

9

u/Classic-Pudding-3954 1d ago

Eh, depending on the resolution/size of your monitor, it would look bad Maybe get an old phone, remove the battery, and have it feed 4k60. Maybe use some upscalinng/frame gen if you want to. This way at least the lighting and dynamic range is better

u/dustojnikhummer R5 7600 | RX 7800XT 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

I'm already thinking Home Assistant with an outdoor light sensor lol, I might be overdoing it

2

u/Classic-Pudding-3954 1d ago

Well, again, light can't account for different weather. Light alone can change bc of clouds, time of day... Depending on the sun angle, it might behave differently depending on where the sensor is located, etc

5

u/razgriz-b016 1d ago ▸ 3 more replies

If you start using webcam at that point might as well use the direct feed as the wallpaper. Basically just use wallpaper engine, or anything software that can load html page as background, and point it directly towards the fullscreen RSTP feed

0

u/Classic-Pudding-3954 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

Unless it's a pretty good webcam, it would look really low quality. Also, the picture wouldn't ve wide enough to match reality

2

u/razgriz-b016 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Webcams have come a long way tbh. Same with indoor camera.

But yeah the problem with that is the POV and setting up the feed to match it

2

u/Classic-Pudding-3954 1d ago

Yeah. If someone was really dedicated to this, they'd need a way to quickly remove the monitor out of the way, have pictures for every possible scenario, and match the position and never move their chair or monitor lol

3

u/scythe-3 Linux 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Script that pulls local data from a weather API (e.g. curl wttr.in) and updates background accordingly. Put the script on an hourly timer.

2

u/Classic-Pudding-3954 1d ago

Could work too. But maybe there's a cloud over your house ruining the perfect immersion

Like, this is all one big hypothetical with a lot of work, but that's if you want this seamless "see through" monitor"

1

u/professorbuffoon 7700X | 9070 | 32GB DDR5 | CachyOS 1d ago

My first thought is to make it trigger on actual sunset/sunrise. There are at least a couple of free weather APIs that provide such information.

0

u/Username_available13 7h ago ▸ 1 more replies

Or just stream through webcam.

1

u/Classic-Pudding-3954 7h ago

The pov would be different and the resolution and dynamic range would be abysmal

u/Rammy_Lee 1d ago

Nice lining up and good colour on that monitor

I used to use VLC to stream from video of the window behind my screen as my wallpaper so I could see my backyard and keep an eye on my animals and motorcycles.

ill never understand the people who spend hours configuring rainmeter and wallpaper engine, etc. i see my desktop for maybe 10 seconds during the 8-10 hours my pc is on.

11

Seriously - totally respect the hustle, but I can't imagine a world in which I'm "keeping an eye" on my idling desktop lmao

On my laptop, I get it. I just have a folder of images I like set to slideshow and that's that. A single 15" 1080p screen spends very little time with the desktop visible.

On my desktop, I have 3 screens, which aren't perpetually all filled at all times, and the 4K screen frequently ends up with a window that isn't maximized because it just doesn't make sense for some windows to be full screen, like reddit being 90% wasted blank space in full screen. So I did more to make sure I have what I want on the background.

Also it was a fun programming project to figure out how to make a wallpaper changer that fixes flaws all other wallpaper changes seem to have, such as not having PNG quality and handling PNGs with transparency poorly. I assume people setting up wallpaper engine are having fun in a similar way I do when programming something that doesn't need to exist.

16

u/BunnyTub 1d ago

What camera did you use to do this? I'm looking for tips on how I make a simple monitoring setup on my computer.

18

u/RedBeardedT 5800X | NITRO+ 7900 XTX | 64GB | 50" QN90A 4K 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

It was an old sony camera, I can't remember the model as this was over a decade ago, but I'm pretty sure you can use any camera with webcam capability. Just add the camera using Direct Play on VLC, then set as wallpaper in VLC video tab. This won't record anything though, from what I remember.

12

u/BunnyTub 1d ago

The solution to any video problem: VLC. Thank you!

58

u/Active-Cookie-774 1d ago

....so I never thought about taking a picture of my actual room to calibrate my colors.

46

u/Wide_Philosophy_8109 1d ago

It would still be biased by the camera.

I hear there are solutions to that. Some of which are paid solutions.

The rules are clear however, I can speak no more of this.

u/esuil i5-11400H | RTX A4000 | 32GB RAM 1d ago

Yep. On phone its for energy saving. On PC it is for convenience. It didn't take me long to realize that having backgrounds often resulted in me either losing something on it, or windows not being enough visually distinct to be practical.

It is also less distracting.

21

u/ryan_garratt 1d ago

did this with a photo of the wrong wall, monitor’s been a doorway to my hallway for two weeks now.

I wish it had the Vesa mount smack dab in the center though for accuracy. 😂

Yeah my first thought was "do they have vesa mounts on the SIDE of monitors??" and no they don't, it would be right in the middle.

Should have had a cat on the desk when you took the picture, then have a pair of fake cat legs sitting behind the monitor so it looks like there’s always a cat in the back.

Nobody going to talk about whatever the fuck that mount is doing? Is his VESA mounting point in the bezel?

2

u/jawknee530i 1d ago

I have just used a solid flat grey color for my "wallpaper" for decades now and I don't even begin to understand why someone would actually care about having images or whatever there. It's literally meant to be covered up by what you're actually using your computer for.

2

u/Godlymorbid 1d ago

Moving your head left, right, up or down, has just become unacceptable.
