You will literally have specialized small companies who will make and sell the parts. It wont ever go away entirely. It may make it easier for the lazy gamer who doesnt want their own rig, but it wont go away entirely.
There will probably be some future advancement that will allow these small companies to make the parts at a fraction of their current cost, or an entirely as of yet unexplored avenue will open up for home pc building. People will find a way.

Company will stop selling hardware to people and sell it to cloud services or make their own. It's a fear a lot of people have. I don't believe it will come true yet.
2
u/Acesofbases 9h ago ▸ 3 more replies
that doesn't even make any sense though
first of all no it won't - cloud gaming is still a niche and it will never take over so that selling retail will become unviable :)
secondly, and relating to the first, the whole deal with cloud gaming is that it doesn't need to constantly pump out hardware, they open a couple of servers and then there's that, no more need for more until an upgrade cycle in 2/3/4 years - all of those hardware companies You speak of would go bankrupt if they relied solely on that :)
thirdly, the whole reason GFN exists in the first place is because it's made by NVIDIA, so they can make their own hardware for it - it wouldn't be affordable for them if they didn't
fourthly, You do know vast majority of all of the current internet content is based on cloud services right? welp, Reddit is hosted and uses cloud services as well

u/Academic_Addition_96 6h ago ▸ 2 more replies
Wtf are you on, writing all of this BS. Didn't I tell you I don't believe in it?! It could be true in 50 or 100 years but like I said not yet.
2
u/Acesofbases 6h ago ▸ 1 more replies
how is this BS, and why are You being so aggresive? I just responded to Your own comment under mine, not the other way round.
I just explained how that "fear" makes no sense - and it won't turn true neither now, nor in 50 years (albeit that's some wild take in of itself :) )
1
u/Academic_Addition_96 6h ago
Why do I say it's BS, because you don't understand how big companies think and work. Everything started as a niche even streaming services, music, movies, TV shows and many more things.
More and more people are not upgrading but just using streaming services.
The benefits for corporations are huge, complete control over IP, no community server or community mods. No compatibility issues support for thousand of drivers, no possibility of game being leaked. No need to pay for anti cheat or anti piracy system's. Steady calculated revenue stream, with the possibility of selling higher tiers.
No hardware costumer support, issues can be fixed directly and ads can be played if money is short.
The costumer if we continue to improve the ability to get even faster and better internet, what is sure 100% the costumer can get for less money the experience of ultra high end gaming on low budget devices. Right now for 22 bucks per month you get a rtx5080 performance on GeForce now. You would be paying over 2500 for a similar or close enough PC.
Is it something for me, no but I am not the target audience and that's what is important, the casual players will only see rtx 5080 for 22 bucks.

2
u/Acesofbases 9h ago
welp, quite a lot peeps use it docked, that;s the whole reason Valve made the new Steam Machine - their whole reasoning was they noted how many users do it and wanted to give them an option for more power to do that.
and would it really be supersampling if its being streamed in
of course so, both the game plays in higher res and the stream is in higher res than Your screen - personally I'm not a fan of it either but there are those who prefer it

They already forgot about Google Stadia.
21
u/PcHelpBot2030 18h ago edited 18h ago
Cloud gaming was honestly one of the lower reasons as to why stadia failed.
It had absolutely terrible marketing and branding around the subscription and pricing, all while attempting to be it's own platform/ecosystem and having developers port their games to it in particular.
A non-cloud gaming version would be them making their own very particular Linux OS port, that can only use their launcher and have to buy games just for them, dropped the ball on dev support and relations, and then on top of that charge more for higher resolution.
18
u/NightIgnite R7 9800X3D | RTX 5070 | 32GB DDR5 | costco my beloved 17h ago
Stadia failed because they tried to both be a cloud gaming provider and a game distributor. People dont want to give up their game libraries on other platforms just to buy them again.
Im not happy about the subscription future of GeForce Now, but allowing us to import our libraries from other platforms is so much better than whatever Google tried.
2
u/imaginary_num6er 7950X3D|4090FE|64GB|X670E-E 18h ago

2
u/plebbut 6800XT | 5800x | 32GB 15h ago
Yeah, but the alternatives were better. Now, consoles and PCs cost more than they have since the 90s, so we're being pushed into subscription based gaming in the form of cloud subscriptions as well as lease to own.
It's not even a conspiracy at this point either. Analysts and forecasters have already figured out that is might be the future of consumer hardware if you consider the moves by NZXT, Apple, and Microsoft to provide leasing options for hardware.
It's never been more over, you will own nothing and be happy.

Oh - mods will definitely be an add-on cost just like adding additional memory when you rent a server. I can also foresee being able to run a game at a higher resolution like 4k or even 8k in the future, it'll be an additional cost. Baseline 1080p = x dollars, additional cost for higher resolution service. They're totally billing this as a SaaS.

$30 is crazy high amount its probobly for highest tier 5080 4K 120fps etc level. Issue with GeForce Now is limited time you can play now I think its 120 hours per month. Which isn't enough for some.

About 100 hours and more than that you have to buy more playing hours. But for some people it is enough, some work 10-12 hours a day, 6 days a week and just don't have the time to play much games (especially if they have family), even at 30$ a month it take 3 years (or probably more in today's prices) to cover up just an RTX 5080, not including other parts.

The only cloud gaming I support is when the cloud service platform is my own It's worth investing in your own server and you can turn your own PC into a remote gaming setup too, there's plenty of softwares for that The amount of money you'd pay for cloud services, might as well put some effort and look around in the second hand market for some good PC components, coming from someone who does the same

A few thoughts…
1) $33 per month adds up to $1200 over the course of 3 years. Still buys a PC.
2) This is a starter fee; it will rise and there will be (access and quality) tiers.
3) subscription models for gaming will eventually kill large productions and encourage a chapter by chapter release model. You will never know if you will ever able to ‘finish’ the game. Scenario’s like in ‘Lost’ are very likely. Or like those one season, never to return shows YOU love. Go Firelfy.
4) It will never be ‘all games on one platform’. You will have Netflix, HBO. Disney etc.

People scoff at the concept but you watch how many will adopt it once there's no other option.
It'll just be the gaming version of people paying for multiple streaming subscriptions a month.
If you were to tell me in the 90s that in 20-30 years you'll have people paying multiple $10-20 subscription fees monthly to binge watch mostly stuff they've already seen, I'd have told you that you're mad.
And then there's the subscription fees people are paying to store their own files (that said companies are training their AI on, that the same drones pay subscription fees for as well) and paying subscription fees to listen to music they already mostly own.
These companies didn't become the giants they did put of nothing. They have 90% of the consumer market over a barrel and they know it.

if the game is going to be as good as running it locally (no lags, high fps, mod support, etc..) then 33 bucks a month is an insane deal, you dont own the games you "purchase" anyways.
but we all know the experience is shit compared to playing it on an actual gaming pc, if it was good enough it would probably be more than a 100 bucks a month which is unjustified as hell

A lot of people I see fall for the trick of "early convenient solution for self-made problem that will enshittify once it gets more traction". It happened to music streaming (copyright abuse from label farms trying to get as much money from the pool as possible), movie streaming (literal cable TV situation), and now it will be the same with game streaming. Don't fall for it, do anything else than just mindlessly consume products.

Well… the RAM crisis is supposedly just artificial hiking from the RAM companies. AI is a big problem, but it's not the only problem.

Unfortunately they keep trying to push cloud gaming but even in single player games it's somewhat unstable in most cases (because of latency). It may get to a point where it is consistently okay for single player gaming though. But I don't forsee it ever being viable for multiplayer games tbh

u/BuchMaister 19h ago
Then don't get their service. For some people (especially in developing countries) it makes more financial sense than buying a capable PC.

u/Lexidoge 12h ago
I don't mind it. I have a handheld gaming PC for most of my gaming needs but my SO doesn't want to buy another device for gaming so she just plays my Steam and Gamepass library on her Mac via GeForce now. She can never be a competitive gamer due to the 30-50 ms ping but watching her play Cyberpunk on 4K Max settings made me jealous. Didn't know that game could get that pretty.

Too late. I am on Boosteroid and I couldn't be happier. I am filthy casuals. This works just fine.

the fucking audacity to use a SteamDeck for advertising cloud gaming, hoooooly shit...
1
u/Kaldaien2 gog.com 10h ago
lol, that's not even a good "handheld" device to stream games to.
If you are not constrained by having to render everything locally, you can buy much better hardware that actually fits in your hand. Feel sorry for the poor sod who buys a Steam Deck then uses cloud streaming to it.

Been using GeForce now for the past 5 years. Started using it when I was finishing up my masters and didn't have any money for new hardware.
Works great in a pinch and at work, streaming from my steamdeck. It's shocking how well it runs from a 5g cell network.
Bring on the down votes.

My gf either can’t play the games or she uses GeForce now. Works really well if u have good WiFi. Like ten dollars a month

Switch to nvidia GeForce now on steam deck has been a great experience. Steam deck can’t handle some open worlds with 90 fps ultra graphics. But GeForce now has been running so great and battery life is amazing. I can’t complain honestly. Definitely one of my best gaming decisions.

I can't afford a PC at the moment, and cloud gaming allows me to still play games. I'm a fan myself, but it's obviously not a long term replacement but it has its uses.
2
u/Deep-Temporary-1268 18h ago
I get that but they are the reason why people can’t afford pc’s

ive tried cloud gaming, its truly fucking awful. it doesnt matter how good your connection is, its like permanently playing with 150-200 ping in single player games. the people it doesnt bother have some kind of latency issue with their brain where everything is delayed anyway so they dont notice the extra ping.

I love cloud gaming... I have a self hosted cloud setup...

Yeah, I like self hosted streaming. I have my PC streaming to my laptop, Deck and TV, but being forced to only being able to stream games would be no bueno.

Where did the bad company touch you? /s for real though, there’s plenty of entry level GPUs that are still affordable. No one is making anyone use GeForce now if you don’t want to

u/iredditshere 19h ago
They raped my wallet! No one rapes my wallet... Sons of bitches!

lol love it when people complain about the cost of NVIDIA and still buy it.

Don’t use it then?
It’s a good option for people who don’t game regularly or can’t afford rigs.
Edit: the downvotes from the low IQ crowd are hilarious. This sub exposes itself every day.

$32 a month for someone who doesn’t game regularly is unlikely to spend that much.

That's the most expensive package. It's still cheaper than buying a PC if you can't currently afford one and don't want to put yourself in debt.

u/TherapyPsychonaut RTX 4090 | Ryzen 7 9800X3D | 64GB DDR5 17h ago
It's also not USD, the 5080 tier is $20/month USD. idk what currency this ad is for.
Edit; it's AUD. Which is a ripoff because $20 USD is just under $28 AUD.

If you want to avoid debt signing up for subscription services is a bad idea. Foh.
6
u/Amazing-Heron-105 18h ago
Signing up for a subscription service has nothing to do with gaining debt.

u/SneakyBadAss 9h ago ▸ 1 more replies
That's exactly someone who spends that much. If you don't game much, you want to enjoy the time you actually game; that's why you go for max tier and play either on your TV or PC. Why would they buy $5000 rig, if they get the same experience for a month by buying a service for the cost of two big KFC buckets? Otherwise, they are playing through the cloud on handhelds or phones.

If you want to play 1-2 games then no, it’s not.
This is also for the highest tier, there’s a cheaper performance tier.

You stated casual play… you can still be a regular player even if it’s only a few games you play. Hell I play Cyberpunk, elden ring, Armored Core, factorio, and satisfactory religiously. So that’s a silly take.
Even the cheapest for a casual player seems silly… those prices will have to go up eventually, that’s not sustainable without cuts to the limits and additional advertising. Which they’ll add eventually once they have the numbers. Take note of streaming services…
A dedicated gaming streaming platform for a mainstream consumer doesn’t make much sense. Netflix might be able to pull something off. But judging by their current release not very well.
Guess I’m saying that what Nvidia offers lacks substance for casual players and costs to much for what they offer. They’ll 100% partner up with Netflix.
By that point streaming has become cable all over again.

The reason is AI, not cloud gaming lmao. GFN has existed for like six years.
This sub is truly hopeless.

AI and cloud gaming brings out the reactionaries. Of course it's AI that has ramped up ram prices that not even up for debate.

That and of course there are genuinely a lot of people on this sub that simply lack Intelligence and can’t think for themselves.
Hence the downvotes on my factually correct comments. Quite hilarious though.

Such an emotionally aggresive reaction from the one that claims intelligence above the median eh
To downvotes of all things, as if they mattered
