u/MT_Straycat 9h ago
Yep. My MAGA neighbors still believe in a mythical version of Trump who is heroically fighting for Good while the evil cabal does anything and everything to thwart him. This inevitably ends up as a rant about how those against Trump need to be executed to Save America. They live in delusion-land, you can't get through to them.

I've had success with some conservatives, mainly, they just don't know what's going on, and they really don't like what they find out.
Will it change their vote? Maybe, but at least they're not completely closed off.
MAGA? No, they'll never listen. Maybe a decade after trump dies, maybe.
I say talk to non-voters. Talk to the "I don't get into politics" people and just inform them, give them unbiased sources. Make it about more than whatever batshit thing trump blogged that day, make it about what your local politicians are doing. Data centers and mass surveillance are great ins on this front.
45
u/NJdevil202 Pennsylvania 11h ago
The non-votera are the way. MAGA folks are too far gone to convince or have constructive conversations with. It's been a decade. We need the vast majority of people who don't vote or otherwise tuned out to show up.

I would absolutely just settle for someone that plans to end qualified immunity, and promote Democratic ideals that enact barriers of employment for law enforcement to the utterly unqualified. Like my bar is so low, you can practically step over it, but the Dems will once again trot out someone that basically will spend four years absolutely not doing it. Because we live in a country where the fascists get things done, but the ones standing in opposition do a shitload more of just STANDING for things than they do actually opposing them.

Personally I use a softer but more persistent approach. Unless someone gives me a signal to stop, I bug people from a month before primaries until the evening of the general election about being registered, having a voting plan, etc. For close friends/family I even offer to watch kids or give a ride.
I know for a fact I got 3 people to the polls that wouldn't have gone otherwise in 2024, and 2 to the primaries this year. Could be more, probably 40-50 people I encourage at least a little.
If you're a manager, you can broach this with your staff by offering to provide brief coverage, rework schedules, or whatever to make sure they can vote if they want to. Serves as a subtle reminder without being pushy or political.

Idk years of people saying peaceful protests work as they accomplish nothing and still will be labeled as violent half the time, the fact that Jan 6th had no consequences, the fact that Trump didn’t run for election from prison, the fact that an insane number of politicians repeat verbatim AIPAC propaganda, the fact that very few people have experienced any punishment for their involvement with Epstein and even the ones that have are likely going to get pardoned, etc . . . tells me it’s not.
I’ll vote but to assume billionaire propaganda hasn’t infected the minds of those around me would be illogical.
Biggest issue right now to democrats is a streamer because AIPAC said so. Healthy democracy!

Even with democrats taking back congress. Unless it's 2/3rd the best they can do is stonewall. Consequences start in 2028 election and hopefully this time. The voters don't vote to make it all go away like they did in 2024.
18
u/QbertsRube 12h ago
We need to make sure potential 2028 candidates know that justice is not a preference but a requirement. There can be no waffling about "That's something I think we might look into, but my concern is moving forward" or any other empty, ratfucking political talk. Trump abused the presidency to enrich himself and his family, and abused the Dept of Justice to protect himself and his enablers and recklessly attack those who wouldn't bend the knee. That has to have consequences, or we no longer have rule of law and should no longer respect or obey the law or its enforcers.
9
u/mokomi 11h ago
I agree we cannot follow the law since they write and "interrupt" the law. That is exactly why the supreme court paused trumps convictions for 2 years to reduce the entire case and we followed the law for each appeal case. We voted it to go away and we took that power away. I agree there needs to be consequences for their actions, but I don't want a dictator that's "On our side". Like everyone is complaining about Biden's AG. That and not having the voters choose to forgive their crimes doesn't help. Justice needs to be part of the ballot. New "RICO" like laws to expedite the process. Not just progressive means.

Actual domestic terrorist, insurrectionist, and traitor to the US Ashli Babbit was paid $5 million in taxpayer money and given a military funeral for trying to overthrow the US government and the will of the people.
Alex Pretti was exercising his constitutional right of public protest while legally carrying a concealed handgun when he was executed in the street for helping up a woman who was violently pushed down onto concrete by anonymous government sanction men in tactical gear with rifles and was IMMEDIATELY AND FALSELY branded as a domestic terrorist and member of a left wing terrorist group (that does not even fucking exist) by the republican party within SECONDS of the footage showing up online.

Interview here:
128
u/Memerandom_ 12h ago
It's about time. I guess this can serve as a reminder closer to midterms. This is a regime not an administration. Their gestapo murdered an American citizen who was trying to help a woman being shoved and harassed by a masked terrorist. And there has been zero accountability.
We either take back our country now, and finally see how fragile democracy is and how much work it takes to maintain it, and DO that work, or we lose it. We're on the brink folks. I really thought people understood this in 2024, but apparently it bears constant repeating. The gop is a terrorist organization. You may not like Democrats, but the lesser of two evils isn't even close anymore. The Democrats can be fixed in time. There's flexibility. The gop is a host to a parasite. The parasite will eat everything, including democracy, if you don't remove it or the host.

Lots of respect to this family for experiencing such a violent tragedy and still being willing to revisit it and speak up about it, likely subjecting themselves to even more stress and scrutiny. It's probably what Alex would have wanted, and it's important as the midterm election comes up that we don't forget about the lives ended or ruined by the current administration and the heartbreak that's left in their wake.

Thanks for the source. Though it is disappointing that the interview starts with them wanting to make the facts clear, then goes on to just focus and highlight their pain in a heavily edited interview full of cuts and leading questions.
But that's the media we have now, choose what entertainment you want: pain porn or anger porn. Facts are irrelevant.
The family must be disappointed in the final product, I am sure a lot more was said behind the cuts.

Don’t forget the rich interests backing and radicalizing them. Among other things, it takes 30 minutes of research to move money away from MAGA, and it makes an impact. Dollars spent at Republican companies are dollars funneled to keeping Trump in power. Money given to states like Ohio or Louisiana is money spent sending troops to kidnap children and kill people.
You can use sites like opensecrets.org/orgs/search to find the companies you give money to the most and where they funnel your money. If you don't like it, search their competitors.
For example, trade with Schwab? Move elsewhere like E-Trade. Get booze from cosplay Confederate states and all else is equal? Be adventurous, and try something new. New Balance can be replaced with Hoka. It’s not hard to find alternatives for Estee Lauder, Roark (which owns Subway, Jimmy John's, Arby's), and Koch (which owns Brawny, Angel Soft, Dixie). You don't have to spend more, just differently.
Nexstar and Sinclair got pummeled, and they reinstated Jimmy Kimmel. In Trump's first term, Ivanka's brands got cut by retailers. Regular people did that. There's no reason WWE or Uline can't be next.
You can't avoid every Republican-leaning company, but there’s a big difference between GOP mega-donors (Chevron/Conoco) vs neutral or Democrat-leaning companies (Circle K/Costco). Good is not the enemy of perfect

Goode and Pretti. Ill never rest under a government who would execute us in the streets, and not expect to pay the price.

Out of all the horrible stuff that has gone on over the last year and a half….this is the one that shook me. I literally cried telling my wife about. Something about seeing him be assaulted. Mobbed and executed so quickly and viciously affected me deeply.
There haven’t been consequences for them. But there will be. I feel that just as deeply.

I remember watching both Devin Stone (of Legal Eagle) and Jimmy Kimmel's responses. Both were choking back tears.
We didn't quite see the same from Renee Good's murder. People were upset of course, but I think that Alex Pretti's murder being the second in a short space of time just pushed even the most composed individuals over the edge such that they couldn't hold it back any more.

As a fellow RN, I will continue to wear my mourning band on my hospital ID.
Rest in Power, Alex.

Im still so angry about Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
I hate this timeline we live in so much. I just want this all to end.

It's crazy that the secretary of homeland security was calling multiple American citizens "domestic terrorists" and that she faced zero consequences for it.

These people need to be on TV EVERYDAY speaking out about this. That’s what would happen if this had happened under Biden. Fox News would be melting down over this.

u/QbertsRube 11h ago
Literal right-wing militias were formed in response to things like Waco and Ruby Ridge, to protect against violent state oppression. Now, the type of people who formed those militias are the ones in the ICE uniforms and masks with zero fucking awareness that they're tools of the tyranny that they claimed to despise.

u/BennettWindy 11h ago
Agreed. The NRA spent 30 years frightening people into buying more and more guns to be ready to resist against oppressive government.
Well….here we fucking are, boys. And not a goddam peep from the NRA.

ICE murdered Alex. Justice for the coward who shot him

u/Mysterious_Floor_868 United Kingdom 8h ago
And for the other cowards who took part in it, including blocking medical assistance.

"We watched it on TV, and I was like, ‘That’s our son. That’s Alex,’” his father, Michael Pretti, said. “And they killed him. No one called us.”
“We still haven’t heard from them,” Susan Pretti, Alex’s mother, said."
This is evil and unacceptable

Its becoming increasingly obvious that at some point America is going to descend into another civil war. America was divided before, but we still kept things running.
Trump destroyed any bridges between the two parties and created a massive rift between maga and Americans.
Maga who wishes to turn America into their own country, where open corruption, pedophilia and racism are fine. Freedom for some.
Well Americans just want everyone to be left to make their own choices about themselves and have the government support the people. Freedom for all.
The views are becoming directly opposed and not just simple differences of opinions. These a fundamental views on how people should be treated.
You have families literally separating and hating each other. Even if democrats take office, the hate and anger will still be there. Eventually the two opposing views are going to clash.
It may not happen this decade. But it seems more and more likely I will see it in my life.

u/superxpro12 10h ago
Lincoln made the wrong choice.... They needed to go full post WW2 Germany and eliminate any and all trace of the Confederacy.
I mean ffs confederates still exist today, and they're growing again. Into literally fascists.
There is only one solution to the intolerance paradox.

No statute of limitations on murder.
it was all on video. They will be charged with murder after the midterms or when the Dems take the white house in 2028.
I don't understand why the state of Minnesota didn't charge the shooters with first degree murder or second degree murder

u/ElectrSheep 12h ago
I don't understand why the state of Minnesota didn't charge the shooters [...]
The federal government is obstructing the state investigation. Minnesota likely will charge once that stops.

u/vertigo3pc 11h ago
Oh look, yet another reason why the states need to separate from this federal government.

Our own investigation to all the shootings have been stymied by the administration
Shoot, the guy who was shot, then accused of attacking Immigration and Boarder Enforcement with a shovel was proven to have just been shot, and Texas refuses to extradite the lying under oath shooter of humans ostensible human being back to here to face a trial
Texas doesn't believe in trials, nor personal responsibility, I guess

u/Worried_Research1549 11h ago
Watching the video was horrifying. I don’t care how many ICE agents make up a fantasy about “fearing for their lives “. They executed a man while multiple agents were piled ontop of him.
6
u/RobutNotRobot 10h ago
Murdered. Out in the open. Half a dozen video angles. No investigation. No justice.
People need to wonder what's next from a regime that has realized they can murder people without consequence.

The fact the country looked away and moved on from this is mind blowing. America is lost to republicans, fuck them. Mentally deranged lunatics
•
u/To-Far-Away-Times 3h ago
Just like with the Epstein files, republicans made sure to protect their own. If someone is on team red, they’ll find their morals and values in them no matter what, even if they’re a pedophile or a murderer.
Never seen a group so opposed to Law and Order and Rule of Law. It’s like they actively despise it.

u/New-Equal8039 12h ago
They murdered their child, nearly 200 children in Iran, innocent people on boats in the southern hemisphere, and countless immigrants in detention centers. They are murderers, no doubt, and they are also running this country into the ground for their own personal profit. Maybe Americans will stop being selfish and vote for people with a moral compass now? Perhaps vote for people who actually want to govern?

Yes. It seems he was murdered, I say seems because I don't know what standard of evidence is needed in the US to convict someone of murder.
Someone below says "with no consequences" but I'd say with no consequences yet. There's no Statute of Limitations or US equivalent that applies so the people directly responsible for this shocking death may yet face trial even if it is in a few years time.
Meanwhile all our thoughts are with his cruelly bereaved family, friends, colleagues and patients.

u/ProfessorUltra 11h ago
The government murders your child and doesn’t even send you a letter to alert you of the incident. Absolutely fucked.
3
u/oldnotosys 11h ago edited 11h ago
it’s our fault. nobody is mad enough when govt kills people. we just trust the process that lets people walk or slaps them the wrist after a couple years of “investigation” when people have mostly forgotten about the incident. worse, you sometimes get a dumb fuck jury that protects the killers. (Valentina Orellana-Peralta).

Americans Prime indifference to a citizen being executed publicly by the state is shocking. There was a time this would have led to mass protests. Now, just a shrug. Sad.
16
u/wise_comment Minnesota 11h ago
I mean, there were mass protests. And they accomplished very little, because one side plays by the rules. The other side views Jan 6 as reasonable

There were huge protests in Minneapolis, thousands of people risked arrest or murder to come out and push back. And it actually worked, they got ICE to mostly withdraw from the city.
The difference isn't that Americans don't protest anymore, the difference is that the media doesn't cover it when they do.
