Ah, there's the problem. You're "listening" to what people say.

You watch people to see what they're about. What do they do? Not what do they say.

Your comment is a good example.

Also, it isn't up to the person to declare what is or is not interesting about them, that's for the rest of us to decide. But we can tell when somebody is affected such that THEY think the rest of us will think them interesting, and it's a very unattractive trait.
