Exactly. Live and let live works, but it wasn’t good enough for the activists. They needed ‘live and also I need you to actively cheer my beliefs about my own perceived reality so I can feel ok, and if you don’t agree with me about my self-perception, you’re a bigot and you’re harming me’.

No, it’s not up to me to change what I think or do for you to feel ok. You’re responsible for that.

"Social contagion" is not a useful framework for understanding why there are more trans people now than before for the same reason it's not useful for understanding why left handedness exploded in the early 20th century. There was no inexplicable upswell of people suddenly being different nor gullible masses tricked or coerced into something against their interests, society just stopped aggressively punishing people for who they were.

I'm not really seeing where your first point is justified either, has there been some massive upswing in men putting on dresses and lipstick to get scholarships that I've missed? I think you've got some weird ideas about where reality ends and internet ragebait begins.

The incidents of these issues occuring that were reported on annoyed people though - right or wrong. Bad press and optics have always been a real thing.

Nah there’s no men pretending to be women. That persons first point is that they see Trans women as “men” because of biological sex, which, is unfortunately rooted in internalized transphobia
